RNC officially condemns Dems' 'march toward socialism'

OXON HILL, Maryland (CNN) - The Republican National Committee on Wednesday approved a resolution calling on the Democratic Party to "stop pushing our country towards socialism and governmental control."

The wording of the resolution was tweaked to strike controversial language that would have called on Democrats to rename themselves the "Democrat Socialist party." That proposal was criticized by some members of the RNC, including party chairman Michael Steele, as embarrassing and counterproductive.

The language was changed so that RNC members "wouldn't have to fight about it," according to one of the resolution's original sponsors.

The 13-point "resolution recognizing the Democrats' march towards socialism," criticizes President Obama and the Democratic-controlled Congress for passing a $787 billion stimulus package and favoring "massive government bailouts" of the financial, health care and mortgage industries.

The resolution accuses the Democratic Party of "implementing socialist programs through federal legislation" and being "dedicated to restructuring American society along socialist ideals."

"We were able to work out language that's before you that we think helps unify our party," said Henry Barbour, the chairman of resolutions committee. "This language more closely reflects the full sentiment of this body."

Steele did not address the resolution directly after it was passed by a verbal vote, but his aides distributed a statement to reporters.

"I am pleased that the committee adopted a resolution that focuses on the Democrats' policies and their destructive effects on America's economic engine, rather than attempting to rename our opponents," Steele said in the statement.

The resolution noted that RNC members defined socialism according to its definition in the American Heritage Dictionary.

The RNC approved three more resolutions. One commended Republican members of Congress for opposing "bailouts and reckless spending," another called on legislators to abandon the practice of earmarking, and a final resolution honored the memory of former Republican congressman Jack Kemp, who died earlier this month.

"stop pushing our country towards socialism and governmental control."

...because pushing it towards ruin like we did for eight years is so much more patriotic.

The republican party should be applauded for sticking to their true color – name calling, palling around with big business and no new solution to the problems of this century. too bad it affects not just people in the USA but across the globe.

This neo-McCarthyism must stop. It wasn't productive then, it's not productive now. Republicans, how about spending your time on a budget with some numbers in it?

My God, can Republicans get any dumber? The country already has socialistic policies in place, and Obama and the Dems are not increasing them. The Republics are grasping at anything to make themselves look like they are doing something, while their numbers decrease daily. But go ahead, keep up the schoolyard tactics....and keep meeting to redesign yourselves every month...heaven forbid you actually come up with plans and solutions to America's problems, most of which were caused by you anyway.

The socialism boogie-man again! Don't let the talking heads tell you what to think. Do the research yourself. Compare quality of life here in U.S. with so called socialized countries such as Sweden.

    You will be surprised.

Now we'll see how long before the GOP demands President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's American citizenship be retroactively removed for all his anti-American, 'Socialist' programs!

Yeah, the Dems "march toward socialism" at about the same pace the Reps goose-step toward fascism.

The only difference between the Democrats and the Republicans is how they want to abuse the power of government. The Dems want to tax everyone into poverty to prop up dead-beats too lazy to work, while the Reps want spy on American citizens and tell people how to live their lives.

Oh, yeah. Like everyone's going to forget that the whole reason the bailout was necessary was because *your* boy dropped the ball. Face facts, Republicans. If the whole country's marching towards socialism, it's 'cause *you* drunkenly staggered in that direction first.

The reason why the Republican Party is doing terrible is because their leaders are weak and do a poor job at communicating to the American people. People think they are the Party of "No" because McConnell, Boehner, and Steele don't tell the people the alternative and new ideas the Republican Party has. Steele doesn't want to call Obama socialist: WHY NOT???

Thank you, Republicans, for calling the Obama's socialists to the carpet on their ridiculous behavior. Enough spending money that doesn't do anything but pay back the entitlement-minded special interests and victim-mentality sobsisters – the Unions, Welfare thieves, and whatever Pelosi wants to spend during her next trip.

What a bunch of hypocrits these Tea Baggers are. They presided over the worst 8 years of giving the money to the rich that the government didn't have, started two wars and made the US the largest debtor to China. Good bye, glad you're out of power. When are your leaders going to be brought before the Hague for crimes against humanity? Once the verdict is in on Cheney, please bring him back to Washington hor a public hanging on the Washington Mall and televise it for the world to see. The UN can declare a World-wide holiday!
