RNC officially condemns Dems' 'march toward socialism'

The RNC approved a resolution calling on democrats to 'stop pushing our country towards socialism.'

OXON HILL, Maryland (CNN) - The Republican National Committee on Wednesday approved a resolution calling on the Democratic Party to "stop pushing our country towards socialism and governmental control."

The wording of the resolution was tweaked to strike controversial language that would have called on Democrats to rename themselves the "Democrat Socialist party." That proposal was criticized by some members of the RNC, including party chairman Michael Steele, as embarrassing and counterproductive.

The language was changed so that RNC members "wouldn't have to fight about it," according to one of the resolution's original sponsors.

The 13-point "resolution recognizing the Democrats' march towards socialism," criticizes President Obama and the Democratic-controlled Congress for passing a $787 billion stimulus package and favoring "massive government bailouts" of the financial, health care and mortgage industries.

The resolution accuses the Democratic Party of "implementing socialist programs through federal legislation" and being "dedicated to restructuring American society along socialist ideals."

"We were able to work out language that's before you that we think helps unify our party," said Henry Barbour, the chairman of resolutions committee. "This language more closely reflects the full sentiment of this body."

Steele did not address the resolution directly after it was passed by a verbal vote, but his aides distributed a statement to reporters.

"I am pleased that the committee adopted a resolution that focuses on the Democrats' policies and their destructive effects on America's economic engine, rather than attempting to rename our opponents," Steele said in the statement.

The resolution noted that RNC members defined socialism according to its definition in the American Heritage Dictionary.

The RNC approved three more resolutions. One commended Republican members of Congress for opposing "bailouts and reckless spending," another called on legislators to abandon the practice of earmarking, and a final resolution honored the memory of former Republican congressman Jack Kemp, who died earlier this month.

Is this really the best the GOP's got? Pathetic. Do something positive for a change. Shut up and get busy governing, not squabbling. You lost, GOP. Cope with it.

I seemed to remember a "president bush" who pushed for and worked on a stimulus package and favored bailouts (tax benefits) for the overtly rich.

Steele needs to stop the insanity. He leaves no doubt that he is insane. Why does the repubs put up with him and the likes of Gingrich, Limbaugh, Hannity and Cheney for destoying the party?

The RNC must be brain dead with its dumb labels and code words. Hey RNC, the American people know you now - we are suffering from Republican policies. The GOP has one secret over-riding principle and its Biblical: do all kinds of evil for the love of money.

Whose turn is it to explain to them what socialism is?

It's not their buzzword definition at all.

The Reps want to call the Dems the "Democratic Socialist Party". That makes as much sense as calling the GOP the "Republican Fascist Party" although that would be more appropriate with Dick and Rush running the Party.

We could call for the republican party to end the move towards fascism, but than we would be acting as low-life as they are.

Ahhhh, the GOP demonstrates once again what a ridiculous group of un-American SOB's they have become. The country faceing it's biggest challenge of the last 60 years (created by them) and they give us "name calling".

I can hear Steele and Limpbaugh now, "your a weenie", "no your a "weenie".

"Embarrassing and counterproductive" is how you could characterize the whole GOP.

Squabbling. Racism, sexism, homophobia. Media stunts to get attention. The GOP is acting like a bunch of teenagers, and I sure wish they would stop.

Wow, only slightly less infantile than the original resolution. For the Republicans, this is progress. Keep heading in this direction and they'll be a force to be reckoned with in about 30 or 40 years.

Okay. We got NO leaders, NO message, NO ideas, NO morals, NO class, NO clue and now NO balls. NO Wait! Now there's NO Rush! Does that mean all we got is Dick? Rush wouldn't leave us with NO Dick would he? I would hate for the Party to be left with NO Dick and NO balls. How would we forestall the Socialist onslaught with NO Dick? Sarah Palin?

The GOP wants to bail out these mega-corps with no strings attached. When the Dems insist on getting a piece of the action in exchange for the taxpayers' bucks the GOP calls them Socialists. In the GOP scheme of things, the mega-corps own the government and write themselves a check whenever things get tough!

What grownup actually cares what resolution(s) the RNC approved. Most people don't even know what the RNC is and don't care to know. This is tantamount to a bunch of schoolboys making rules to follow while in their treehouse after school. THERE IS NO RELEVANCE TO ANYTHING FROM THIS BUNCH ANYMORE. Go away kiddies !!!

I forgot to mention that none of those Conservative lackwits could define socialism, has ever read a book on socialism, and or could discuss the features of socialism – as opposed to Liberalism, which is not nearly the same thing.

As the man said, you just can't fix stupid.

The government uses the word march as if it's some sort of militia type behavior and the word Socialism as if it were "Terrorism" or "communism." Let's be real here, does it really scare ya that bad? I'll bet most of your children attend public schools don't they. Oh, but socialism is such a horrible thing huh? Too bad you're brain washed by people who give a crap less about you, your opions, or your problems. Watch, they"ll do what they want to.

Stupid idiots! So when a country's economy is on the brink of collapse and the government tries to interevene to save it from becoming a full blown depression the GOP calls that Socialism. Then the GOP should rename itself as well since they also agreed on Bush's bailout programs. Please GOP read the actual meaning of socialism and for those calling President Obama a communist, grow up and think of something more creative. Stop living in the 60's.
