Bush missed both Obama and Cheney's speeches Thursday, a source tells CNN.

(CNN) - So what did former President Bush think about President Obama and former Vice President Dick Cheney's dueling speeches on national security policies Thursday?

He didn't watch them.

A source close to Bush said the former president was traveling at the time, enroute to New Mexico where he is the keynote speaker Thursday night at a fund raising dinner for a scholarship program for students at Artesia High School.

I love Bush..... He's one of the worst leaders ever in the history of the world but I simply love him.... He is an awesome human being. As for him being a terrible leader, it's not his fault. It's the people who elected him especially for the 2nd term.

Royster   May 21st, 2009 2:35 pm ET

There are times when waterboarding is appropriate, after 911 waterboarding three high Ranking Al-Qaeda leaders was appropriate.

From liberal MSM of course not but liberals will never pick that up, they are too busy making fun of Fox News. The liberal MSM have always tried to make him look as bad as possible.

alvino   May 21st, 2009 2:23 pm ET

I would like to see Bush react to Cheney's criticism of the Democrats for not supporting the CIA. Tricky Dick Cheney blamed the CIA for faulty Iraq intelligence and compromised Valerie Plaime. Hypocrite, thy name is Cheney.

jaye   May 21st, 2009 2:23 pm ET

Send the Gitmo detainees to TEXAS – nevermind....they'll just get more torture. RED states (republicans) think torture is okay.
Also, I DO NOT believe Cheney is getting favorable opinions....nope, no way.
WHY is CNN so in love with Cheney, Bush, and the republicans, lately? Dosen't CNN know what they did to our country???? Maybe they should start watching the news.

Good bye CNN. You seem to stir the pot more than FOX news regarding that treacherous, murdering crook cheney. You're more concerned with creating conflict and divisiveness with how you report than actually just reporting.

I wont be visiting your page or watching any broadcasting of yours in the future.

betty perry   May 21st, 2009 2:19 pm ET

Charles Atlanta   May 21st, 2009 2:15 pm ET

Ok. Results speak themselves. We won't forget 9/11 and 9/11 needs a closure. Bush/Cheney FAILED to close out 9/11. Instead, they opened an uncessary Iraq war and Obama has to cleen up these mess they created. Simple question to Chenney – where is Bin Laden? Failure is failure, nothing can hide the failure, period.

Edward   May 21st, 2009 2:14 pm ET

Hilarious – on the CNN poll earlier in the day, a majority did not agree w/closing Guantanamo. Now, the poll says 60% agree with Obama as compared to Cheney on the issue, yet it's the exact same issue! People – don't just vote for a name or an image, you have to understand the message. Think for yourselves!

Karl   May 21st, 2009 2:14 pm ET

Bill Clinton was impeached for the Monica Lewinsky affair...

Yet after eight years of one of the worst administrations in our country's history... Bush, Cheney, Rove, Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Rice, Gonzalez and many, many more are still walking around as free people and haven't even been given an official slap on the wrist for EVERYTHING they did to our country. As an American citizen, I find this amazing... and very discouraging.

James   May 21st, 2009 1:55 pm ET

Bush is hiding from the spotlight because he got us into this mess we're in. Cheney seems to think he can talk his way out of putting Americans in the line of fire for a buck. And then Obama...he just doesn't know what the hell he's doing at all.

Prosecute the Bush clique! Lock the traitors up!

Good for Bush. He's best off keeping his nose out of the little Obama/Cheney pissing match because that's all it is. Why not skip them? I agree with Bush on this one. Cheney will not say anything Bush hasn't heard or said even. For Obama's, Bush has already shown that he will refrain from public comment, which I think is quite appropriate (in contrast to Dick, "the self-preservationist" Cheney). As a US citizen, I'm sure Bush can catch up like the rest of us (seriously).

Alex   May 21st, 2009 1:44 pm ET

I don't have the highest regard for GW Bush, but I will give him credit to taking the high road. While Cheney has been, frankly, dishonoring himself by coming off as the ultimate bad sport, and even Condie Rice has shot her mouth off, Bush has stayed respectfully silent. Whether he stays on Obama's Christmas card list the way Clinton and Bush Sr have, is another story.

LN – it says that he is just like every other President. Or do you not know that Bill Clinton speaks at high schools as well? Probably to find his next Monica, but you know.

Should we assume Michelle's best gig was speaking to a bunch of kids a few weeks ago when she spoke at a school? Silly comment.

Boy, talk about bias. Obama's post on his terrorism speach has 160+ comments. Cheney's post on his terroism speach has 2 comments.

I wonder what side of the ideological spectrum CNN falls?

Laura Turner   May 21st, 2009 1:38 pm ET

Why should we be surprised? He never read newspapers or watched newscasts while he was President. Why would we expect him to change?

cakejab   May 21st, 2009 1:38 pm ET

Is this sweeps week??? Chaney co-president??? Why is he given equal time with our sitting PRESIDENT. Shouldn't Cheney be supporting our President as he expected us to do while he was in office?

Obama sucks   May 21st, 2009 1:38 pm ET

The last guy who should lecture anyone about being an American is OBAMA.

Good for Cheney. Glad to see someone setting the record straight.

PLUTO   May 21st, 2009 1:37 pm ET

He's the Alfred E. Neumann face of the Republican Party. "What, ME worry?" he told reporters as he urinated into a rosebush. "Mister Cheney's got it all figured out. I'm gonna be president again next week if I clean my plate." Then he went inside to watch American Idol reruns.

Melissa   May 21st, 2009 1:37 pm ET

Bush is doing the smart thing. Keeping his bloody mouth shut. Like Cheney, and the extremist Republicans like poster J In Chicago, should do.

Obama is right. In case you people didn't notice, Cheney is a warmonger bent on destroying the world and fascism is bad.

I agree with the Economist. Bush is showing more class than Cheney and actually more class than he has for the last eight years. Bush simply was not the brightest nor the best educated star but likable. Cheney on the other hand is simply evil, really an evil, twisted, hateful mind with no remorse. Why doesn't he go eat a lot of cheese burgers, fries, and fried food...then he can make a positive contribution to America.

Bob   May 21st, 2009 1:36 pm ET

The hatred I am reading here is just sad and pathetic. Politics seem to bring out the total evil in people, especially here on the CNN board. Hey folks, about giving the hate a break, hmmmmm?? The useless and senseless attacks on another human only continues a level of discourse that serves no one. This is why political parties are not the answer.

Tim   May 21st, 2009 1:35 pm ET

It's apparent that Obama is going to adopt most of the Bush/Cheney procedures on terrorists. Do you want to know what the difference between Bush/Cheny and Obama is? Bush/Cheney don't care about polls.

BC   May 21st, 2009 1:34 pm ET

Cheney tried hard to convince our nation that because of his leadership choices, President Obama would be responsible if our country is attacked again.

Doesn't this also imply that because of their leadership choices Bush and Cheney were responsible for the last attack on our country?

It is a good thing that the former president did not watch as Cheney pulled out his golden can opener and promptly opened up a whole new can of worms.

Joe in Austin   May 21st, 2009 1:34 pm ET

Wise man.

Kathleen   May 21st, 2009 1:34 pm ET

I agree with you Sharon! Bush doesn't need to speak because the person who spoke and acted on his behalf for 8 years is still speaking. I saw Dick more now than when he was vice president. He said America needs to remember 911, but his administration forgot all about 911 when they went after Hussein rather than Osama Bin Laden.

Fred NJ   May 21st, 2009 1:33 pm ET

Bush makes me ill. How can anyone want to hear a word he says? I am glad he's not giving us his opinions–if he even has any.

I hope Cheney keeps talking and asking for memos to be released. Maybe he can explain why waterboarding someone over 150 times is an effective method.

proud army navy mom   May 21st, 2009 1:32 pm ET

cheney looked like a old pathetic coward.

He was sweating bullets because he knows he will be indicted for war crimes.

JL   May 21st, 2009 1:32 pm ET

Bush is handling himself well. Cheney should take lessons on how to behave. Perhaps someone needs to explain to Cheney what the difference is between being Vice President and being a FORMER Vice President. It seems Bush gets it, Cheney doesn't . Now there's a switch.

virginia nielsen   May 21st, 2009 1:31 pm ET

We CAN NOT ever forget that Bush, Chenney and Rice were warned THREE TIMES in August, before 9/11 happened, about an eminnent terrorist atack on the US soil... but ARROGANCE prevailed and 3,000 americans and citizens from other nations paid a high price for that stupid right wing mentality that we are an untouchable nation !!! The argument for / against the Bush-Cheney administration has already been made in the way they governed. No new words will change the history. Bush is acting intelligently; Cheney is trying too hard to be convincing. (By the way, CNN did not say whether Bush taped the speeches for later viewing).

The black spider   May 21st, 2009 1:18 pm ET

Leave the classless stuff to Cheney and the right wingers like some of the ones that post here on these blogs. Like mother used to tell me "empty wagons make the MOST noise"!

For those who claim Obama is the idiot – I think your definition of idiot needs a lot of revising! If lack of intelligence and long term thinking are your qualifications, then Bush has it and Obama is the antithesis of it.

Fear mongering won't work either Cheney. YOUR ADMINISTRATION is the one who missed the warnings on 9-11. So, to say you guys kept us safe is a complete lie. You have made us nothing but MORE in danger than before. Obama has begun the long road back from this, starting by closing Guantanamo.

Richard L   May 21st, 2009 1:10 pm ET

Bush:
Failed to prevent 9/11
Attacked a nation that had nothing to do with 9/11
Fought against establishing the Dept. of Homeland Security
Fought against having the 9/11 Commission
Took the month off for vacation right before 9/11
Fought to turn port adminstration over to an Arab country
Told us that he just wasn't that concerned about bin Laden
No wonder he had the highest disapproval rating.

Since everyone else is following suit, let me continue.

If the interrogations prevented attacks, why doesn't Chenney expound on that. Tell us who, what, when and where? Why wait on the briefs. Believe me, if he did that, the briefs would come out one way or another.

Why not use the facilities we have open now, like Gitmo? why build a new one and waste the money?

What strikes me as most amusing about this is not so much that Bush is traveling, but where he's traveling to. He's going to a high school fundraiser. The former president of the United States is keynote speaker at what is a glorified bake sale. Hilarious.

Ken in NC   May 21st, 2009 1:03 pm ET

G.W. Bush makes no comment because he is out of office and I'm sure he wishes Cheney would shut up too and go back to his secure undisclosed location but Cheney must continue to spread his fear among the American people. It is his only way of maintaining control over the government. Well he thinks he is maintaining control when in reality he is no more than a citizen shooting off his lip.

Kenyan Wonder Kid   May 21st, 2009 1:03 pm ET

With yesterday's arrest of the domestic terrorist suspects, which was possible through the security policies and provisions set up by Bush and Cheney, we remain safe. Obama wants to change all of that.

Cheney is a rare patriot who is also an incredibly safe pair of hands. Compare that with the Biden, Pelosi, Reid, Obama fly-by-night "the terrorists can be our friends" circus... What a joke.

What a fear-monger. Republican law-makers are being completely irrational in an attempt to regain power, much like they did to try to keep power in 2004, and with Atwater in the past. What a sham they are trying to pull.

Could Dick Cheney be preparing for a 2012 run for president?????

THE MEDIA IS THE MASTER   May 21st, 2009 1:00 pm ET

He couldn't read the directions for the remote.

CAROL   May 21st, 2009 1:00 pm ET

We had an election, we have a new PRESIDENT. Cheney and his daughter need to go now!

Shari, NY   May 21st, 2009 1:00 pm ET

I give GWB credit for using the right approach by keeping a low profile. The man recognizes that he already had back to back chances of being commander in chief, blew it, and the torch is now in someone else's hands. Cheney who was obviously the one trying to run the show during Bush's tenure has just awoken and decided to play catch up which is too embarrassingly late.

J in Chicago   May 21st, 2009 1:00 pm ET

I watched it and Cheney's also.
What I found is that obama is an inexperienced, overmatched, smooth talking idiot.

Cheney chews him up and spits him out on the facts and the reasoning.

obama says we are less safe and offers no facts. he is nothing more that smoothly said words and no substance. his new slogan, "where's the beef????"

Givemeabreak   May 21st, 2009 12:59 pm ET

Thanks Bush for showing class, Obama could learn a few things from you. Well a lot!!

chuck   May 21st, 2009 12:59 pm ET

This is funny to be because i know the liberals are seething because former president bush hasn't said anything. they would be mad if he did say something; but , i think the fact that he doesn't care what either of these idiots say makes them madder. lets sit back and see what they have to say...

Lynda/Minnesota   May 21st, 2009 12:59 pm ET

Now that the oh so hyped speeches are over, does this mean that I have to be afraid of my new neighbors, who incidentally are Muslim? Should I close my drapes, lock my doors and windows, and cower in fear everytime I leave my house?

Live in fear, die in fear . . .

LN   May 21st, 2009 12:58 pm ET

What does it say for the former leader of the free world, that the best gig he can get is keynote speaker at some high school? Pretty sad.

Lori   May 21st, 2009 12:58 pm ET

I am actually delighted that Bush is keeping silent. But on the other hand, I wish he would talk more to remind the American people how far we've come since his tyranny, I mean leadership. Where was Cheney when we needed the rat to talk during the last 8 years?

JOE   May 21st, 2009 12:58 pm ET

BUSH is barely aware he is even alive...

Florida Joe   May 21st, 2009 12:58 pm ET

And we care WHY??

marke from NY   May 21st, 2009 12:58 pm ET

bush is a moron. cheney is an empty- brain.

Arrogance thy name is Obama   May 21st, 2009 12:57 pm ET

I was hoping that Obama would thank me.

JOE   May 21st, 2009 12:56 pm ET

This DUNCE would not unerstand what they were about anyway

And secondly who cares what this war criminal has to say????

Post always rejected by CNN   May 21st, 2009 12:55 pm ET

I don't really care for Bush for what he let Cheney do to this country. But you can say one thing for him he has more class and character in his toenail, then Cheney and his fellow asinine republicans have in their whole body.

Richie   May 21st, 2009 12:55 pm ET

CNN is shutting down comments awfully quickly today. CHENEY SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP.

Jake   May 21st, 2009 12:55 pm ET

permanant vacation on the ranch?

Candy West Virginia   May 21st, 2009 12:55 pm ET

911 happened on bush and cheyney's watch. How did they keep us safe?

George W Bush   May 21st, 2009 12:54 pm ET

Obama use too many big werds. Make my brain hert. Have nice day!

m   May 21st, 2009 12:54 pm ET

Dick Cheney just spent 30 or 40 minutes recounting for us his 911 experience...thanks Dick...somehow the questions still remain as to what will we do in the future to restore this country's greatness.....

Jean 2   May 21st, 2009 12:53 pm ET

These two should just disappear. If their friends and supporters want them to speak to their groups so be it. We do live in America.

The unfortunate thing is that media seem to need to stoke the fires of
of controversity at any cost.

Gary SC   May 21st, 2009 12:53 pm ET

GWB here's what you missed from your boy.
" Scare, Scare, Scare, cough, cough, Scare, Scare, Scare, chug, chug, chug, Scare, Scare, Scare. Cough, cough, Scare. Scare"
I thought he was going down for the count a couple times..

Catana Barnes   May 21st, 2009 12:52 pm ET

This is no surprise. George Bush has always avoided the truly tuff issues and the issue surrounding his and Dick's approval of torture IS a HUGE issue...criminal at best!!!

New Yorker   May 21st, 2009 12:52 pm ET

Bush has a clear conscience because he did what was right in order to protect this country. He has no need to find out what Obama's take on the issue of terrorism is, because he already knows.

The fact that so many of you bloggers are ungrateful for Bush's willingness to do the right thing, regardless of the wimps of the world think, gives evidence to your own failure to recognize truth and be duped by the current president who's foolish actions are paving the wave for more terrorist activity.

Obama Victim   May 21st, 2009 12:52 pm ET

Bush is twice the man Obama thinks of himself!

National Prayer day – Obama absent

National Day of Recognizing fallen officers – Obama absent

Putting together a concrete plan of dealing with terrorists – Obama absent

Wednesday night White House drunken party – Obama PRESENT!

David   May 21st, 2009 12:52 pm ET

Bush is doing what Cheney should be doing. Moving on. They both failed massively in their jobs and it only makes them look worse by trying to justify their previous actions. We need to move forward because the damage has already been done.

Barbara Independent in NY   May 21st, 2009 12:52 pm ET

He didn't know what was going on then and he doesn't want to know what's going on now.

Richard L   May 21st, 2009 12:51 pm ET

He was probably working on his new book. It takes a lot of time to create a good coloring book.

Mack   May 21st, 2009 12:51 pm ET

Bush is laying low probably cause of Jeb wanting to be president. Cheney will run for president to finish his dirty deeds and Jeb will be vice president and declare Cheney senile..and take over. Its all in the bag.

Just waaw   May 21st, 2009 12:51 pm ET

Bush never been the boss... Cheney was the one..

not a bush fan   May 21st, 2009 12:50 pm ET

I did not like President Bush when he was in office, but I have to give him credit for having more class than Cheney now that he is out of office. I am impressed that Bush is retiring from the political stage so gracefully and focused on other things.

Jeff   May 21st, 2009 12:49 pm ET

he stuck with what he could understand. Watching SpongeBob squarepants and readin pop-up books.....what a dolt

reality check   May 21st, 2009 12:49 pm ET

This image represents the look of confidence and integrity that all Americans espouse in their Commander-in Chief.

CitizenJane   May 21st, 2009 12:48 pm ET

CNN has been doing a lot of moderating today. Wonder why?

This whole set up of Obama vs Cheney is so over the top "reality T.V." stupidity.

Take away all of the nonsence and what is left but a has been V.P. whose sole exsistence is now so insignificant that he has been reduced to nothing more than a sideline cheerleader for his base of town idots.

How frustrating for a has been world leader (of sorts). . .

Bush, at least, knows when to call it quits.

Lilarose in Bandon, Oregon   May 21st, 2009 12:48 pm ET

Bush probably wouldn't have understood anything being said by either Obama or Cheney.

Bush looks terrible, one step from advanced dementia.

Harvey for Obama   May 21st, 2009 12:48 pm ET

Who cares what Bush does?

Tom Paine   May 21st, 2009 12:48 pm ET

It's a waste of time for anyone to listen to an idiot like Obama.

wishing   May 21st, 2009 12:48 pm ET

Consistent. He once said he didn't care what History will say about his administration because he won't be around to read it.

Edwin   May 21st, 2009 12:48 pm ET

Are there any pictures of Bush in existence where he doesn't look stupid.

Pat, CA   May 21st, 2009 12:47 pm ET

After reading Obama's and Cheney's speeches just now, I have the utmost respect and admiration for Mr. Cheney. Mr. Obama, on the other hand, continues with his well-executed goo-goo gobbledeegook.

Please keep speaking out, Mr. Cheney. You are a brave and honorable man.

Linda   May 21st, 2009 12:47 pm ET

Bush is a hell of a lot better than the idiot in office now and he's a lot brighter than any of you.

Kevin -- Evansville, Indiana   May 21st, 2009 12:47 pm ET

It's not like he ever paid attention to the world around him. Why would he start now?

jerry   May 21st, 2009 12:47 pm ET

good for him. I respect you for that " W".

Tom Paine   May 21st, 2009 12:47 pm ET

Bush lived this war along with Cheney. He doesn't need to be lectured by an idiot like Obama who was hiding under his desk in Springfield during 9/11.

The Other Michael in Houston   May 21st, 2009 12:46 pm ET

No matter what Cheney says, we the American people know the truth. We are not scared of the terrorist.

ANGIE IN PA   May 21st, 2009 12:46 pm ET

He Didnt watch or Pay Attention to Anything While he was In office Either no Big Surprise Maybe he is Somewhere Drinking himself to Death!

marke from NY   May 21st, 2009 12:46 pm ET

bush did not watch cheney speech because he was screwed by cheney's lies. cheney was boring.

Brian   May 21st, 2009 12:46 pm ET

he skipped 90% of his presidency so why should post presidency be any differant.

cecilia   May 21st, 2009 12:45 pm ET

well of course he did not watch – why should he – he never knew what was going on right under his hillbilly nose for 8 years – why would today be any different . he still has cheney doin the thinkin for him.
they all need to go to jail – do not pass go – go directly to jail – I can't stand looking at or thinking about any one of the yahoos in the bush administration -

Tom Brazelton   May 21st, 2009 12:45 pm ET

Why would we expect him to have listened to them? He spent 8 years with his head in the sand, why stop now?

bern   May 21st, 2009 12:44 pm ET

Traveling or not, is anyone suprised?

Pat   May 21st, 2009 12:44 pm ET

People let Pelosi & Reid out in public .. turnabout is fair play. Get off his back, he has more class than people give him credit for.

GOP = 21st century dodo   May 21st, 2009 12:44 pm ET

Bush was just the mascot / public face of the Cheney cabal. No need to include him in these matters.

Anonymous   May 21st, 2009 12:44 pm ET

Well, he didn't pay attention to any important issues when he was President, why should he do it now that he's out of office?

Rob Ottawa   May 21st, 2009 12:44 pm ET

Bush is an idiot.

frank, NC   May 21st, 2009 12:44 pm ET

he didnt watch anything while he was in office either.

Anne E.   May 21st, 2009 12:44 pm ET

Didn't watch either speech? This is also known as "Thursday."

The Party of NO stood by calmly as the shrub raped and pillaged America, why should we listen to you now?   May 21st, 2009 12:43 pm ET

While no fan of Bush, he is at least NOT helping al Queada by declaring to the world he thinks we are vulnerable to an attack.

Cheney should be indicted for treason.

jim   May 21st, 2009 12:43 pm ET

Bush didn't do a lot of things, and what he did do, trashed our nation.

Also, what's the difference between the camp in Cuba, and a super max prison in the US for detained terrorist?

The only thing I can think of is that torture is ok as long as it's not on US soil. And we wonder why they hate us so much...

gary davis Harbor Oregon   May 21st, 2009 12:43 pm ET

I must say one thing about W Bush

it is proving more and more that he was not the big boss man at the time of all the lies it would apear that tricky dicky Chenney as we most all figured ran the counrty from under a rock in an undesclosed location

instead of calling Cheney Darth Vader

we should all refer to him as ( CHENEY ALL MIGHTY)

works for me

sharon, newport news, virginia   May 21st, 2009 12:43 pm ET

He doesnt need to listen because the man who spoke for him for 8 years is still speaking and still using the technique they used so successfully on the United States citizens for 7 years – Fear. As long as Cheney can continue to scare Americans the Bush-Cheney regime is still in power. As long as 24/7 news gives him the platform his buddy will continue to spew his venom and scare Americans. Who is the real terrorist here?????? Thank you for actually retiring President Bush!! Please try to get Osama Ben Cheney to shut up.

Neilz   May 21st, 2009 12:42 pm ET

Laura said "No Way!" With all the preparation needed for one public outing, taking a chance on some off the cuff remark turning into another GOP coffin nail was out of the question. Besides, they don't pay their attorneys to be decorations like Dick. They should at least try and listen to them once in awhile.

economist   May 21st, 2009 12:42 pm ET

Evidently Mr. Bush is the classy one of the Bush/Cheney pair. I wonder what sort of administration Mr. Bush would have had if he didn't have Darth Vader as his wingman.

Grog in Ohio   May 21st, 2009 12:41 pm ET

In other words, he's as clueless as he's ever been.

Hopeful Optimist   May 21st, 2009 12:39 pm ET

The boy just don't look right bright.

Dutch/Bad Newz,VA   May 21st, 2009 12:38 pm ET

People are actually letting him give commencement speeches? He should't even be out in public.
