Source: 1 in 7 Gitmo detainees may have returned to battlefield

More than 14 percent of detainees released from Guantanamo Bay are expected to have returned to terrorism activities, a source tells CNN.
More than 14 percent of detainees released from Guantanamo Bay are expected to have returned to terrorism activities, a source tells CNN.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Preliminary intelligence assessments show more than 14 percent of detainees released from Guantanamo Bay have returned or are suspected of having returned to terrorism activities, an administration official with knowledge of the Defense Department's information told CNN.

That number, which reflects data through the beginning of 2009, has gone up slightly from statistics compiled through the end of 2008, when the recidivism rate was considered to be 11 percent, according to the administration official. It had been at 7 percent in earlier years, but the Pentagon has not disclosed what time frame that encompasses.

The official emphasized the latest data is still being verified within the military intelligence community, but it appears likely to show that the rate of recidivism has now reached more than 14 percent.

    Not so fast!!!!
New York Times reporter Elisabeth Bumiller is now casting doubt on the claim in her front page story today, pounced on by the right and quickly picked up on cable, that one in seven detainees released from Guantanamo "returned to terrorism or militant activity."

Appearing on MSNBC today, Bumiller said "there is some debate about whether you should say 'returned' because some of them were perhaps not engaged in terrorism, as we know - some of them are being held there on vague charges."

CNN always ready to tow the GOP line.....

Obama’s Guantanamo Plan DOES NOT endanger national security because:

    1. Very few of the Gitmo Detainees were arrested from inside the US. They were captured from Iraq, Afghanistan or other places.
    2. Most of the Detainees are citizens of Countries which are in poverty. These countries get weapons from other industrially advanced countries.
    3. Terrorist attacks in US happen from inside the US. We need a better homeland security rather than going after terrorist all over the world. We need to prevent infiltration.
    4. Information can be obtained from terrorists without torture and inflicting pain. Medical science has drugs that can be safely administered to elicit truth.

Can't wait to see how the GOP blames this on our current president. Newsflash...the people claiming they created Gitmo to keep us safer, waterboarded people and lied to the American population about why we went to war in Iraq created this mess! Again, they left this to the current administration to clean up. Thank God for President Obama!

Let's bring them all here. They aren't dangerous. They can stay in the White House. It's OK, the people own the White House.

    Dear Mr. President,

Please send the rest of the Gitmo detainees to Truthsayer, Steph and Randy's homes. They are blissfully oblivious to any dangers and they don't care what happens.

This Democrat says keep them away from the US!!!

Anyone who says they can't do any danger if they are kept in US soil, obviously doesn't know anything about the prison system.

The Prison gangs are in charge and they routinely impact the lives of people who are outside of the prisons.

The last thing we need are these terrorists in charge of the prison system.

NO! You mean the Gitmo detainees were actually dangerous – not just misunderstood kids and innocent victims of the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld cabal? You don't say!

Big freakin' surprise – to liberals, that is.

This is what Cheney said during his speech. Typical GOP no blame.
So how is Obama making us less safe a little over 100 days and you had 9 months but nothing you did caused 9/11.

"What is equally certain is this: The broad-based strategy set in motion by President Bush obviously had nothing to do with causing the events of 9/11. But the serious way we dealt with terrorists from then on, and all the intelligence we gathered in that time, had everything to do with preventing another 9/11 on our watch."

Funny thing is he made some good points. See we are not like the GOP we can reason and understand intelligence.

When you look beyond the dem ultra-liberal talking points you realize that the prior administration did things for good reason. The imprison-Bush crowd (that Obama is a member of) is blinded by their desire for vengeance.

NEWSFLASH TO LIBS: These people are TERRORISTS – that's what they do! Let them free in US, Canada, Iraq, where ever and they will get back to plotting to kill US citizens and/or Israeli people.

How many people in the prison system today are responsible for the deaths of 3000 people?
These prisons and courts would become a target for every Al-Qaeda sympathizer in the world.

Listen to what the President said... the detainees should be tried and locked up in supermax prisons for life...like the terrorists we already have in prison. Oh, what...we already have terrorists here...you better run phoenix86, they're coming right to your house!

Attn: Liberal Sheep......After the 4 radical Muslim arrests in NY TODAY, you have to wonder why you would close Guantanimo. 3 of them learned Islam IN PRISON which is where you want to bring the other prisoners. BRILLIANT. 1 in 7 are going to try and kill your family.

In other words, it appears that approximatly 1 in 7 are likely to be actual "terrorists" who actually deserve conviction.

Now it makes sense why neoconservatives don't want GITMO closed. They would prefer to release terrorists so that they can plot against us than to have them stand trial, determining who is a threat and should be locked away for good. This way, more American lives can be lost, and more American dollars sent to Halliburton and other such war profiteers. Both of these things apparently bring glee to those who would bring harm to this nation (i.e. al Queda terrorists and Rush Limbaugh fans).
