Source: 1 in 7 Gitmo detainees may have returned to battlefield

More than 14 percent of detainees released from Guantanamo Bay are expected to have returned to terrorism activities, a source tells CNN.
More than 14 percent of detainees released from Guantanamo Bay are expected to have returned to terrorism activities, a source tells CNN.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Preliminary intelligence assessments show more than 14 percent of detainees released from Guantanamo Bay have returned or are suspected of having returned to terrorism activities, an administration official with knowledge of the Defense Department's information told CNN.

That number, which reflects data through the beginning of 2009, has gone up slightly from statistics compiled through the end of 2008, when the recidivism rate was considered to be 11 percent, according to the administration official. It had been at 7 percent in earlier years, but the Pentagon has not disclosed what time frame that encompasses.

The official emphasized the latest data is still being verified within the military intelligence community, but it appears likely to show that the rate of recidivism has now reached more than 14 percent.

...and undoubtedly with a fanaticism now that they never had before Gitmo. That's Obama's point. You can't save the ones we damaged and inflamed, but at least we can stop furthering it.

    To Kelby in Houston:

This republican is not afraid. Well, maybe I am afraid of what has become of the judicial system in this country. But I digress.

This is an extremely complex issue, to which I believe the correct approach would be the military tribunal system. That is, for those who were picked up on the battlefield.

For those picked up on American soil, the American court system should apply.

In either case, habeus corpus (sp?), unfortunately, has not been granted. I do take issue with that. Oh there I go... using big words again – how about speedy trial instead? (that's for your jab in a prior post).

Gee – which Administration blared over national TV the HORRORS of impending swine flu?

Which administration invented the phrase "Never waste a good crisis"?

Who exactly has been hyping the economic situation to FORCE through trillions of pork, government-give away, and nationalizing auto companies + banks + insurance companies????

Oh yeah.. .Obama & the democrats. Seems like hypocrisy bite you in the @$$ but you have too much "padding" to realize it.

There are those of us who have actually served our country, with honor and with morals. We haven't done as your leaders have, dodged the draft 5 times, running from portecting this country at every given opportunity and then ran screaming into the closet at the slight challenge of dying with morals rather then living with none!

Ya see, not all Dems are lovey dovey. So yea, there are those of us who are 'haters' of the cowardly pukes out there that make our country look bad, such as you. PS: In fact, I support the Death Penalty because of people like you.

What?? I thought you dems told us that most of the detainees were poor misunderstood shepherds that the "evil" Bush administration had randomly rounded up??

If they are found not guilty and their own country won't take them, I am sure that Harry, Nancy, Keith and Rachel will be more than happy to have them as house guests. After all, they are not dangerous anymore.

IF convicted (altho I believe we would all agree that it sounds liek a pretty sure thing). But hey, guess what? They'll be staying in American prisons while they await trial and they'll be staying in American prisons if they are convicted. Need to change your pants yet?

hey steph, the terrorists arrested yesterday were under surveilance for over a year and bought the phony explosives from undercover agents. they just happened to choose last night to set the bombs.

@ donttreadonme, who said "Khalid-Sheik-Muhammad was a good guy befor Gitmo? "

I know straw men are probably the only thing the sissy GOPers can knock down, but he came nowhere close to saying that. People released have been interviewed and openly admitted that it was precisely because of their wrongful incarceration in GITMO that they now vehemently hate America, even though they did not before.

one droplet of water to the forehead, once a day isn't torture.

one droplet every three seconds for day is.

waterboarding someone once, almost everyday of the month, gots to be torture!

Kelby let me guess 9/11 was an inside job and the Bush administration was behind the whole thing. There is no such thing as a war on terror it is only made up by Fox, Hannity, and Rush. You are the typical freak on the left that is so delusional by your hatred for the right that you can't think rationally. You just like your savior Barack think that the terrorists feelings are more important than the protection of our country. Go climb back under that rock you are living under!!!

Truthsayer I hope you are kidding regarding your comments. CNN is in the tank for the GOP just like FOX is in the tank for the dems. I think we need to stick these detainees in your backyard. I am sure there is plenty of room under the bridge that you call home.

This number changes each time it is "told". How do "they" know what any of those released do ? "They" are still looking for Osama bin Laden ! If they were really bad guys, that could do the USA any harm . . . why the hell did "they" release them in the first place.
    This is all just nonsensical.

We should remember that some of these people aka detainees were held for years without any charges before being released. Everything about Iraq has been wrong.

Take their DNA before they are released and tell them if they are caught or found on the battlefield again they will be buried face down in a casket full of pig entrails. That'll get their attention and perhaps change their behavior.

  22. Will my comment make it through for a change?

As reported on TPM, the NY times, where the article first appeared has now changed what was first reported.

Instead of the statement that "1 out of 7 detainees HAS RETURNED TO terrorism " it now reads "1 out of 7 detainees ARE ENGAGED IN terrorism".

The reporter is backing off of inferring that all of these people were actually involved in terrorism before they were taken into custody, and is allowing for the possibility that they may have gotten involved in terrorism as a result of being in Gitmo..

The fears are absurd. we have prisons housing terrorists like Paul Rudolph, Timothy McVeigh's partner, child molesters, serial killers, arsenists and worse. Adding in a couple more–who haven't even been tried. Sounds more like a dictatorship than the world's greatest democracy.

In my war (Vietnam) we never had the problem of what to do with POWs. What good has GITMO done for us? The damage far outways any perceived gains.
This was a bad idea of Bush and Cheney, and since the good citizens of the USA reelected those two clowns it is only fair that we help President Obama to resolve the problem of what to do with the inmates. It would be only fitting for good patriotic gun-totting Republican households to house an inmate from GITMO for six months a year until they all pass away.
