Source: 1 in 7 Gitmo detainees may have returned to battlefield

More than 14 percent of detainees released from Guantanamo Bay are expected to have returned to terrorism activities, a source tells CNN.

More than 14 percent of detainees released from Guantanamo Bay are expected to have returned to terrorism activities, a source tells CNN.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Preliminary intelligence assessments show more than 14 percent of detainees released from Guantanamo Bay have returned or are suspected of having returned to terrorism activities, an administration official with knowledge of the Defense Department's information told CNN.

That number, which reflects data through the beginning of 2009, has gone up slightly from statistics compiled through the end of 2008, when the recidivism rate was considered to be 11 percent, according to the administration official. It had been at 7 percent in earlier years, but the Pentagon has not disclosed what time frame that encompasses.

The official emphasized the latest data is still being verified within the military intelligence community, but it appears likely to show that the rate of recidivism has now reached more than 14 percent.

The former community organizer wimp is now the presidential wimp. He seems to have a lot of empathy for terrorists whose only goal is to kill Americans.

And this is now blamed on Obama... despite the fact that ALL of those released detainees were released by Bush! How come republicans didn't protest Bush releasing these detainees? Partisan hypocrisy!

These are extremists and terrorist, what do you expect? They hate everyone. They should be tried by a military tribunal and if found guilty jailed for life, and not in american territory. Keep them in Gitmo. Change the name, paint the walls, install airconditioning or cable TV or whatever else will make the international community happy but keep them in Gitmo for life.

No, it can't be true. All of them are just innocent bystanders. Turn them loose in Cuba. Cuba sends its criminals here. Turn about is fair play.

Mr. Cheney should have charged the president for the lessons in history, national defense, and Constitutional Law during his speech today! Cheney stated facts and specifics as opposed to this young, inexperienced, and most self-righteous president who concentrated on rhetoric and grandstanding! Thank God Cheney and not Obama was in office on 9/11!!!

Bush/Cheney (in their infinite wisdom) didn't even check out the ones they released.

What a mockery they have made of all things US.

Prosecute them for aiding and abetting the opposition (they DID provide more people to help them kill our GIs).

Obama is simply so naive, without a life-time experience nor executive leadership skill (like the governors).

We will bring them to the US. Then they will get some real good laywers and get out of prison in the US. They will go under cover and go back to their old ways, and Obama is the one closing down camp. So yes you can blame Obama.

CNN has a poll up on it's main news page that says "Do you support the position of Obama or Cheney" and Obama is currently winning 60/40 because we love Obama....but if you phrase the question "Do you believe that Gitmo should be shut down and the prisoners sent to prisons on US soil" then you would find 60% don't want to shut down Gitmo. Because americans do not like that policy.

CNN has phrased this poll to get the result that they want because they know we have an aversion to Dick Cheney. This is subtle media bias.

Lets see if CNN will post my critical comment. Better yet lets see if they'll change the way that poll is worded.

This is the same liberal mentality that failed to act against Al-Qaeda even after the USS Cole attack, the Embassy attacks in Kenya and the first world trade center bombings.

Um, Bush also failed to act, which cost a lot more lives than the Cole. Had he stopped 9-11, he wouldn't have had any justification for going into Iraq, which was his goal all along. He had intel in August 2001 which he ignored. So just WHO kept us safe? Not Bush.

"14 percent of detainees released from Guantanamo Bay have returned or are suspected of having returned to terrorism activities, "

Obama has only been in office a little over 100 days. That percentage will go down with another Obama hope, change, peace and love World tour. News travels slow with Al Qaeda.

Someone in the Obama administration has to remind Cheney who believes his own lies, that they were warned by President Clintion's admin, that an attack by Al Quieda was imminent, there was a bounty on Bin Laudin's head and Bush totally ignored this National Security risk and America was attacked. They then went off and started a war with Iraq on the pretext of terror only to go after the oil fields and give his former employer no bid contracts in the billions of dollars. It is time to speak truth to the power that the liar Cheney still commands among the media and republican psycohpants.

We should not be surprised that people whom the U.S. treated so badly would turn against us. It's more evidence that torture and mistreatment are counter-productive. Most reasonable people understand this, but apparently Dick Cheney still doesn't get it.

This is about the 45th version of how many returned to fight us. The Pentigon is even counting all the detainies who apeard in a documentery about the abuse they witnessed. A documentery counts as returning to the field???? Of course the press always will select what sounds more sensational because thinking requires to mutch work. That is why they let Repubulican talking points spread throughout the news day. They'll let Gingritch lie on TV and never check the facts and call him on it. I guess CNN is the fair and balanced network. Everyone knows Bush, Chenney, the slam dunk CIA lies. All except the major news networks. shame

Here is how we can handle this. Let them close Gitmo and place the prisoners in the blue states, since it's no big deal for all of the left wing nuts, when they decide to reak havoc it will be in their backyard, they want them to have rights and everything else, let them deal with it. Problem solved, case closed.
