Obama will deliver a commencement address with multiple McCains in the audience.

(CNN) – When President Obama delivers the commencement address at the U.S. Naval Academy on Friday, he will have a former presidential candidate and proud parent of one of the graduates in attendance.

John Sidney McCain IV, more commonly known as "Jack," will become the fourth McCain to graduate from the Annapolis, Maryland, service academy and the fourth with the same name.

About mid-day at the academy's commissioning and graduation ceremony, McCain will receive a Bachelor of Science degree, take the oath of office and be commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy 103 years after his great-grandfather did the same.

Two things:
@No Hope May 22nd, 2009 8:12 am ET
Doesn't being Commander in Chief kind of make him a military person? Just because he didn't serve is no reason to disparage the man.

@Wyatt May 22nd, 2009 9:26 am ET
Seriously? The "illegitimate Kenyan-born" train not only left the station months ago, it derailed. Wake up, already.

Sniffit   May 22nd, 2009 11:44 am ET

What a copout CNN for closing the comments on the GOP's new ad. People should be allowed to publicly express their disgust with it.

Ambrose Smith, Borrego Springs, California   May 22nd, 2009 11:43 am ET

Libs aren't anti military. They are aniti "unneed wars".

Afghanistan yes.

Iraq no.

Dumb cons just don't get it.

In other news...all 100 Senators will be in the same room together at the same time at some point in the near future...the sky is blue...the world is round....water is wet.

McCain will be sitting in the audience having an ill-concealed apoplectic fit; his wife will consume/steal more meds than her usual daily dosage; the only cool one there will be his daughter Meghan; and she'll be trying to get Obama's autograph! All in all NOT a banner day for Senator John McShame.

My gosh... can't you even let a happy and proud occasion go by without slinging mud? Even the most fervently partisan posters on this topic said nice things. 4 generations of military service – does that mean nothing to youi?

Congratulations and thanks to the McCain family for their patriotism and sacrifice.

Independent in Virginia   May 22nd, 2009 11:41 am ET

You messed up CNN – Democrats and some Republicans don't like McCain.

Comments here are ridiculous. It isn't really news, but I don't see the point for nasty comments.

Eric in Colorado   May 22nd, 2009 11:40 am ET

Paul you are a complete fool. CNN is in the tank for Obama and every other left wing crazy like yourself. Hongi put your anger and stupid comments on your daily kos website. We don't need morons like you with your hatred of everything that is not socialistic.

Lynda/Minnesota   May 22nd, 2009 11:39 am ET

I am sure the McCain family is very proud as they should be. Congratulations . . .

Umm.... So..... This is a story

Paul   May 22nd, 2009 11:35 am ET

someone on here asked, "How can a NON_MILITARY person give the commencement at the naval academy"? You probably missed that civics class, but President Obama is Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States.

obambi   May 22nd, 2009 11:35 am ET

What are you bitter about, Frank in Las Vegas? Your side won, unfortunately. I could not watch Obama's speech today after hearing him bash American Pres and VP day after day in the Media. I am surprised that he accepted this speaking engagement. No doubt he used another opportunity to bash Americans and to highlight himself as usual. McCain's are both great Americans.

Joe   May 22nd, 2009 11:34 am ET

OMG People....

Obama is the Commander In Cheif.

Who would you rather have than your boss? Joe the Plumber?

white female   May 22nd, 2009 11:32 am ET

Good for him, we're proud of our servicemen, and I know his parent is proud also. I hope that this younger generation can bringabout some peace in this (USA) and the world. We have a great start in this New, and young President Obama to do that.
May God bless america.

Danny E. Gonzalez   May 22nd, 2009 11:24 am ET

Sen. McCain should be extremely proud! I watched the president speak at Notre Dame and I have to tell you it was a very good speech, very gracious (the president of Notre Dame was extremely eloquent and gracious as well); this is the kind of rethoric the country must engage... civil disagreement but towards an eye of conciliatory ideas and solutions. Very impressive... I wish Mr. Cheney could do the same... I'm far more impress with Pres. Bush for accepting his new role as citizen... very gracious indeed.

donttreadonme   May 22nd, 2009 11:22 am ET

Sorry John Sidney McCain you deserve better than this man at your commencement .

Vic   May 22nd, 2009 11:15 am ET

President Barack Obama and Senator John McCain are proof that two decent men with class who can disagree without being nasty. We need more like them.

90% of these guys hate Obama. My uncle is a retired Delta and hates the guy with a passion. Would rather have his wife as comander n Chief because he is only a friend of terrorist and a coward.

Cowboy in West Texas   May 22nd, 2009 11:09 am ET

Good to see the McCain family continue to serve our country – thank you to all of them. And I don't see anything political about this – I would have been proud to have the President speak at my graduation over 35 years ago. Can't wait to see how people make a big deal out of this somehow.

BJNJ   May 22nd, 2009 11:08 am ET

Who's the rock star and who is a "commander in chief". The rock star makes decisions by the polls. The commander in chief does what's right. Who's who!!!!!!

Releasing the memo's on enhanced interogation opinions was just plainly stupid.

Congradulations John and "Jack" McCain we wish you the very best as you embark on your Naval career. And I am sure everyone who is intelligent* is proud of the tradition of service that the McCain family has provided this country.
For some reason, I hope that one day yet another John McCain will continue this great tradition

phoenix86   May 22nd, 2009 10:53 am ET

I can see why McCain is there. I cannot understand what Obama would be doing giving the commencement address. Obama is working hard to weaken the US miliary in all areas, including the Navy.

rob in austin   May 22nd, 2009 10:48 am ET

i don't understand why this is a topic that needs the attention it is getting. even though mccain lost the election, i haven't seen anything truly showing hate from him to obama. and either way, this event is not about them. its about the graduates and the work they put in to attain a degree. past events of these two should not interfere with that.

Rob   May 22nd, 2009 10:38 am ET

And we're all just eagerly awaiting Meghan's idiotic posts about going to this. Although, seeing as her new friends the libs are anti-military, she may not go. Hey, gotta keep on the good side of those who'll plaster your face on the tube.

Moderate Republican   May 22nd, 2009 10:37 am ET

President Obama, despite the hate my party spews, I respect you.

paul   May 22nd, 2009 10:36 am ET

I find it interesting how cnn has provided a platform for any Republican talking head who defends the Bush administration and its failed policies and is so critical of President Obama's efforts to clean up their mess. Is it not enough that they have an entire network? Or is Rupert Murdock now a partner of Time Warner? Is it still CNN or CNOX? This is very troubling to me. My friends and I are complating seeking NEWS elsewhere.

Or in this case, "To the office."

Gary   May 22nd, 2009 10:21 am ET

McCain puts his money where his mouth is....He may not be as eloquent and President Obama but he and his family have proven dedicated service to our nation for many generations. We probably should have looked past all of the hype and elected McCain as president. As a moderate (some say liberal) Republican he would have been better able to find the compromises needed to get the economy and the war on terror back on track.

seebofubar   May 22nd, 2009 10:20 am ET

Obama doesn't have the right to be in the same town as McCain, a true american hero.

floridian   May 22nd, 2009 10:18 am ET

Congratulations to both the son and the father on this accomplishment. May our Presidents' policies and actions keep the son from never having to endure what the father had to endure in serving his country. Added - congratulations to all of our service academy graduates from one who did likewise. RTB...

Deb n Texas   May 22nd, 2009 10:00 am ET

McCain doesn't deserve to be on the same stage with Obama. McCain sunk to dirty politics in the campaign to win which is why he was such a big loser – an anything goes campaign. McCain needs to go home and sit in his easy chair - I hope he loses the next time he runs for senator.

walleye   May 22nd, 2009 9:58 am ET

Though I never fully agreeed with all of Senator McCains policys, he and his family should be proud of their long tradition of service to our country.

Wyatt   May 22nd, 2009 9:26 am ET

One American hero and one illegitimate Kenyan born president. One family line of service to country and one of questionable origin. How fitting. Where's the birth certificate?

S Callahan   May 22nd, 2009 9:20 am ET

Congrats to John IV...having a long line of 'Navy' men in my family..this is the gold bar. Your Dad should be real proud.

Karl   May 22nd, 2009 9:19 am ET

The fact that McCain's family devoted 103 years to US Naval service in itself is outstanding. I am proud of that family's military service and can't express my appreciate.

WILLY   May 22nd, 2009 9:11 am ET

Go Barack......John McSame is very proud of you!

The Weatherman   May 22nd, 2009 9:09 am ET

Consistency is a family trait. It is amazing to have Obama give the commencement instead of the 3rd McCain. The 3rd McCain would not have waivered with EIT or abuse photos at the expense of service members lives.

ronvan   May 22nd, 2009 9:08 am ET

Whatever you think about McCain, I do not like him, however, this is a nice story. 103yrs. of family history is impressive.

Not my president   May 22nd, 2009 8:57 am ET

Unlike Barry who said during the campaign he "thought about military service" but NEVER thought to put that in one of his books, John McCain and his family have walked the talk.

There is no "overlap" between these two, McCain is decent to a political fault, Obama is a "typical" lying politician who is being exposed for the fraud and novice that he really is.

Experiment failed, one and done Barry.

John   May 22nd, 2009 8:38 am ET

What would really be funny is if McCain unplugged the teleprompter, that would be the highlight of the evening.

SENSIBLE MIKE   May 22nd, 2009 8:33 am ET

No Hope   May 22nd, 2009 8:12 am ET

How can a NON_MILITARY person give the commencement at the naval academy, that is a JOKE. What does Obama know about military and their tactics, NOTHING. Obama makes this country LESS SAFE daily with his rules.

chuck   May 22nd, 2009 8:03 am ET

Congratulations to the younger McCain. I imagine it is not easy to graduate from the naval academy. Lets see how many people have something negative to say about it on this blog. By the way, what is the headline trying to say when it says "Lives of McCain and Obama to overlap at Naval Commencement"? Is this supposed to be another "showdown" like Obama and Cheney in the news yesterday?

New Day   May 22nd, 2009 8:03 am ET

ummmmm... yay?

Terry, TX   May 22nd, 2009 7:55 am ET

Congratulations to the McCain family for a college graduate....might I add to all parents who had a college graduate this year....I have had all three graduate and it is a proud moment.

I just hope Obama is capable of giving this speech to the Naval Academy without slamming Bush and Cheney, slamming our intel agencies, our soldiers and Americans in general.

Not a bad lineage for "Jack" McCain unlike Obama's who's father bang a American white chick and both dump the kid onto the grandmother to raise.

Both President Obama and Senator McCain, being civilized people would have no problem being at the same place at the same time for the same purpose: graduation of the class of 2009. Just one of those little coincidences of life.

Ryan in MN   May 22nd, 2009 6:24 am ET

Farnk, Las Vegas   May 22nd, 2009 5:52 am ET

It's great that John McCain has to sit quietly in the audience and listen to President Obama. Who knows, if John plays his cards right, he might get to shake the President's hand. Ain't life grand.
