Liberty University bans College Dems

(CNN) - Liberty University, the evangelical school in Virginia founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, is drawing heat Friday for its decision to revoke recognition of the College Democrats' chapter on campus.

According to the Lynchburg News & Advance, the school decided a week ago the organization "stood against the moral principles" held by the school and therefore could no longer be sanctioned.

Maria Childress, the staff adviser to the club, told the paper the school - which opposes abortion rights and gay marriage - had issues with the Democratic Party platform.

Childress says she was told by Mark Hine, the vice president of student affairs, that "'You can't be a Democrat and be a Christian and be a university representative.'"

In a conference call with reporters Friday, Terry McAuliffe - the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee who is running for governor of Virginia - sharply criticized the move.

The university did not return CNN's request for comment.

    Wow!
You can't be a Democrat and a Christian.
Sounds like the republican party. Wonder what the schools stance is on lying, hypocrasy, fear mongering, failure to perform, unAmerican
activities, ego, torture, and hiding misdeeds behind religion?

This should be grounds for revoking their tax exempt status.

It's close to tragic that the "Religious Right" fanatics managed to steal the Republican Party. Self-righteousness and idiocy, all in one package...

"You can't be a Democrat and be a Christian". I guess that makes Liberty University the US version of the Taliban Training Center. Now they are telling you what you must subscribe to for the purpose of being one of them. Well they are a private institution so I guess they can make the demands they choose.

I agree with Jason. They're a private university and as such, they can do whatever they want.

Although things like this make a degree from Liberty University slightly less valuable that one from Central Alabama Beauty College.

Kudos to Liberty University. At least they have more principles than Notre Dame.

Why does the far right always have to have this "my way or the highway attitude" ? If a Liberal Arts College decided to revoke recognition of a College Republicans' group, the GOP would be all over it like white on rice. Why is it so hard for Conservatives to find common ground? Someone please explain this to me?

Yet a recent poll of Christians, in this country, shows a majority support torture.
Hypocrites who are still stuck in the Middle Ages.

Just goes to show you how non tolerant these bigoted right wing evangelists are. They can support the RepubliCON party that has no morals or ethics whatsoever. If Jerry Fallwell's bunch can accept the family values displayed by many Republican politicians, Heaven help us all.

    Private university....
    It can do this....

If it wants to showcase its stupidity to the world, it's more than able to.

Goodness knows, this is one of the stupidest things I've heard today.

The article states that the Democratic Party platform opposes abortion rights and gay marriage. That is incorrect. According to other articles about this issue, the Liberty College Democrats club had opposed abortion rights and gay marriage before the college shut the club down.

Why is it OK when Berkeley can turn away the Young Republicans, but a Conservative College doesn't have the same right? Only when you disagree with Liberalism can you be silenced. If you disagree with Conservatism, you should be rewarded. You Libs are huge Hypocrites.

By engaging in partisan politics, Liberty University's will have its tax-exempt status revoked according to tax law. Students should be ashamed that their school is so intolerant and hateful.

  23. Not surprised!!!!!

This is no surprise to me. I am a Christian and I am ashamed at how we are sometimes represented. How do you say someone is not a Christian because you are a democrat? Fallwell was the biggest crook I have ever seen in my life. I love God, love this country and love the fact I can agree to disagree with my friends on pertinent issues of our day. These same people approve of torture, give excuses for children being rapred at the hand of religious leaders, have their daughters get abortions. We need to reassess our priorities as Christians and truly love one another, even those that do not agree with us.

Of course they are a private organizationa and can do as they please. They definitely don't believe in "Liberty", and anybody who wants their kid to get a job for more than minimum wage should think long and hard before paying their hard-earned money to that "school", but that's the "University's" problem. And I have every right to refuse to give my party affiliation, money or vote to any politician, group or organization remotely associated with their "movement". Done!
