Liberty University bans College Dems
(CNN) - Liberty University, the evangelical school in Virginia founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, is drawing heat Friday for its decision to revoke recognition of the College Democrats' chapter on campus.
According to the Lynchburg News & Advance, the school decided a week ago the organization "stood against the moral principles" held by the school and therefore could no longer be sanctioned.
Maria Childress, the staff adviser to the club, told the paper the school - which opposes abortion rights and gay marriage - had issues with the Democratic Party platform.
Childress says she was told by Mark Hine, the vice president of student affairs, that "'You can't be a Democrat and be a Christian and be a university representative.'"
In a conference call with reporters Friday, Terry McAuliffe - the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee who is running for governor of Virginia - sharply criticized the move.
The university did not return CNN's request for comment.

I think Liberty University needs to try just a bit harder to live up to its name!

Perhaps there should be a move to revoke the university's ability to award degrees which call for an open mind, e.g., law degrees and teaching, and see whether their IRS status is still acceptable.
A private school can do this if they want, should they? I guess when Jesus taught us that we're all brother and sisters he didn't mean Democrats too.
If it's a private university then they seem to be within their rights.
I wonder how many students will be withdrawing from school over these actions?
tha shall not judge, isn't that in the bible, or he just conviniently forgot that page in the bible I mean to think a president in any university can be this narrow minded is outerly inconprehensible. these are the same people who cream bloody murder for abortion but totally ok with wars and not so eager to protect the borned is hypocracy at it's highest level.

In addition to their extreme closemindedness, might I also recommend their quite excellent academics, as evidenced by their 94% acceptance rate, as well as their tendency to actually send applications to high school students numerous times? It's mid-May, and just a few days ago, I received a packet in the mail with an application from Liberty.
Seriously, though, they do realize that Billy Graham himself is a registered Democrat, don't they?
Oh, wait. People actually like and admire Billy Graham.
They used fight like hell for their intellectual credibility. Whenever their debate team scores a win against one of the weaker Harvard teams, for example, Falwell would put it into his speeches.
Then, they do things like this and reveal who is really behind the curtain.
They are a private university, but they seek to have a public image that bestows their graduates with credibility. If I had graduated from Liberty, I'd be requesting a partial tuition refund after this one....

Jerry falwell is a moron..liberty university has drawn the ridicule of many people for a long time..this just adds fuel to the fire..unfortunatly this also sheds light on a lot of liberal institutions that have banned such things as ROTC..I believe harvard university is one of them..maybe nancy pelosis' new job could be president of liberty university

I did a little research into the banning of ROTC and College Republicans and found that BOTH the College repbublicans and dems were presenting cases at universities to reinstate ROTC. I also found nothing about College Republicans losing their sanction. Maybe its in there deep somewhere, but it hasn't happened recently.
So in my opinion that was a pretty moot point.
That said, they ARE a private school, they CAN do what they want. If you don't like it, go somewhere else. But I totally disagree with the comment that you can't be Christian and Democrate. Judge not....
Wow, talk about extremism. It's very good when this type of behavior becomes public. It exposes the hypocrisy of some supposed christians.

I see lawsuit coming. Doesnt matter if its a reasonable one. Its not very good publicity these days. I could be wrong but I dont think a private university can ban anybody without just cause. Politics are not one of them.
