Rove said he's siding with Limbaugh.
Rove said he's siding with Limbaugh.

(CNN) – In the ongoing war of words between Rush Limbaugh and Colin Powell, top Bush strategist Karl Rove is siding with the popular talk radio host.

Appearing on Fox News Sunday, Rove said Limbaugh would edge out the former secretary of state if he "had to pick between the two."

Rove's comments come after a back-and-forth between Limbaugh and Powell, during which both have charged the other is hurting the GOP's chances of success in the future.

Discussing divisions over the direction of the party in the wake of its losses in the 2006 midterm elections and 2008 presidential election, Powell said the party should expand its base.

"I have always felt that the Republican Party should be more inclusive than it generally has been over the years and I believe that we need a strong Republican Party that is not just anchored in the base but has built on the base to include more individuals," he told "Face the Nation."

Ultimately, Rove said, the debate between Limbaugh and Powell is a "false" one because neither is a candidate for public office.

"The real debate takes place out there in the real world by people getting out there and encouraging the kind of candidates who represent their vision for the party," Rove said.

Rove, Cheney, Limbaugh, Gingrich, Steele, etc. still haven't figured out that the American people rejected their policies and their politics.

Willie   May 24th, 2009 4:36 pm ET

Why is this guy not in jail yet? And why does he continue to command the media's attention when he opens his mouth?

And Limbaugh? The only thing he has run is his mouth. He is a Sunday night armchair quarterback who can do nothing but throw stones at those who are taking an active role in politics (i.e. those who are actually engaged in and making a difference).

In my own opinion, Limbaugh needs to either step up to the plate or shut up.

Annie   May 24th, 2009 4:35 pm ET

I just read an interesting comment on the internet regarding people like Rove, Limbaugh, Gingrich, Cheney, etc. They're out there talking week after week about how we need to be afraid; to be very afraid. Isn't that the definition of terrorism, to instill fear? Following that line of thinking, wouldn't that make them terrorists?

Holding my breath.   May 24th, 2009 4:34 pm ET

disgusted mom of three young men   May 24th, 2009 4:30 pm ET

And this is a surprise? It would be funny if it were not so shameful. Cheney, Rove and Limbaugh have never served our country in uniform, and yet they insult Powell, the only man among them who did. Come on all you brave right wingers, defend those three some more.

Because Rove knows the Powell has always been a closet liberal...

Debate the issue!   May 24th, 2009 4:26 pm ET

It is so interesting that whenever Rush, Rove, Cheney or Bush is discussed immediately the liberal comments ignore the issues and attack the people personally.

Likewise, whenever Pelosi, Reid or Obama are mentioned the personal attacks from the conservative comments also dwarf the discussion about the issues.

MANY OF YOU NEED TO GROW UP!!! Comment on the merits or weaknesses of the issues instead of mean spirited personal attacks.

You may feel that the person being interviewed is the worst person on earth but still there may be important issues that they bring up that we need to consider. Are we openminded enough to look past the politics and look at the issues????

They deserve each other   May 24th, 2009 4:25 pm ET

The two of them have soooooo much in common. I won't mention that they're both fat pigs – Oops it slipped. They are both cowards. They don't mind our children fighting in unjust wars based on their lies, but neither one would actually sacrifice their life for our country, but they have the nerve to disparage a genuine soldier who fought in several wars for our country. They have both benefited from tax cuts for the wealthy. They both belong in jail – one for purchasing illegal drugs and the other for illegal dismissals of federal prosecutors and lying about WMD's. And they both need Viagra.

Rove, Cheney, and Limbaugh – three of the most repulsive names in America today.

Keep it up, you rabid radicals – the Democratic Party continues to reap the harvest that you've sewn.

Loretta   May 24th, 2009 4:24 pm ET

I’m not surprised. Cheney and Rove have already stated that they are in total agreement with the sardonic Rush Lumphead. Rush has stated all along that he hoped President Obama would “FAIL”, so it looks as if all three are working together to under-cut the president’s efforts, and have now put a plan into action that they believe will ensure his FAILure.

Shhhh, but don’t tell anyone that I told you, because we the (American people) are considered too stupid to figure this out. Unfortunately, we have no other choice but to prepare ourselves for more calumnious attacks on the President because there will be plenty.

He’s no longer just a “foreigner” and a “Muslim” whose wife uses the word “whitey” when referring to Caucasians, now he’s “attempting to make our country less safe.” What’s next? I’m preparing myself for whatever comes as I’m certain that there will be much more to add to this paragraph as the year progresses.

Will the Lies never cease?

These fools, who have clearly demonstrated they are nothing but human trash, should all just shut their mouths and crawl under a very big rock – in Texas. Gen. Powell is all that could be right with America if the ignorant would just give it up. They ARE the problem and couldn't spell solution is you spotted them a s, o, l, u, t, i, i, o, n; in that order. This country is doomed!

jbates   May 24th, 2009 4:22 pm ET

Good. I detest the Republicans and it is helpful to have Rush and Karl shoot off their mouths. And yes, let us do get the Republian base fired up. That has also been helpful. So lets take the trailer park Christianity and bigotry and shout it out as loud as possible. For every vote it brings the Republicans it will bring the Democrats two.

Jasmine   May 24th, 2009 4:21 pm ET

Marlene – I'm pretty sure that Powell has more than 20 million supporters. He's got supporters from ALL parties! Even the most liberal Democrat respects and honors Powell. Rush only has the right wing of his party. Not very impressive. But when you think that only 23% of Americans identify themselves as Republican anymore – 20 mil can seem like a lot.

Buddy   May 24th, 2009 4:21 pm ET

Cheney is a five time draft dodger and Limbaugh certainly embodies all of he Neo-Con principles... you know.... recreational drug addictions, mulptiple marriage and divorces, infidelities, obesity... you name it, Limbaugh's done it. So of course Rove picked Limbaugh, that was an easy one for him.

erik   May 24th, 2009 4:16 pm ET

Good, good.... This is exactly what I want to hear. Infighting amongst the republicans can only be good for the country. This will help to assure Democratic control for at least a few years. The Democrats will shift the pendulum back to a more rational place. Six, ten, perhaps twelve years from now, the republicans will get their act together after having purged the ridiculous far-right psychopaths. Their presence as a viable party will be needed at that point to help balance against the excesses that will inevitably occur from the Democrats having too much power for too long. By that time, the economy will have turned around, Iraq (and hopefully Afghanistan/Pakistan) will be "resolved", and hopefully a couple of the right-wing morons on the Supreme Court will have died and been replaced by moderate liberals...

Then we can get back to politics as usual...

John in NoHo CA   May 24th, 2009 4:15 pm ET

Well, DUH!, he would.

Powell's departure from Rove's administration (er, Freudian slip) was a huge relief for me. I HATE the Republican Hannity/Limbaugh condescension. But when Powell was fired/quit, I hoped he'd be who actually turned out to be: a decent man with differing opinions from mine.

Powell is a Republican I respect and admire. Maybe because he wore the uniform and served two tours in 'Nam... one that Cheney, Rumsfeld and Bush wiggled out of when being dove-ish when called, yet managed to be hawkish about using other people's children as political pawns.

Mr, Powell, I admire you. And thanks for your duty to help us, even when it was a war tforty years ago that was as wrong as the one we have today.

MC in OR   May 24th, 2009 4:13 pm ET

I side with Zippy the Pinhead over Rove simply on the basis of moral judgement and integrity. Rove has neither.

Hop Capitol   May 24th, 2009 4:12 pm ET

Of course Rove picked Limbaugh, they are the same brand of liars whose entire careers are built on self promotion at the expense of our country. Great news though, in the depth of the Bush junta people would point at the Colin Powells and the John McCains and say that is why I'm still a Republican. Pretty soon, the fanatics who run the party won't have the safety net of intelligent and respectable moderate conservatives. The GOP is a fringe party that should rightfully be lumped in with the greens, libertarians and the communists.

Franky   May 24th, 2009 4:11 pm ET

You have got to be kidding me. A choice between a decorated General vs. a big fat drug addict and you chose the big fat drug addict. No wonder the GOP is in the position it is in.

Rove,

You need to go the to cliff with Rush "over the cliff" Limbaugh

Jasmine   May 24th, 2009 4:11 pm ET

I would vote for Powell any day of the week over Cheney, Limbaugh, Newt, Palin, Rove, Steele, or any other of these Republicans that are speaking out right now. He has always had my respect, even though we disagree on most things. He's exactly the sort of Republican that the GOP should be having on the front lines right now. Everyone respects Powell regardless of political persuasion and that's a good thing that needs to be celebrated – not a bad thing! ..only the staunch right wing respect any of the others. These neo-cons disrespecting Powell so publicly only gives the GOP more of a black eye (if that's even possible).

Thomas   May 24th, 2009 4:10 pm ET

Who really cares what Karl Roves thinks anyway, except Fix news.Karl Rove should worry more about the jail term he's going to face someday soon.As for Cheney,he's just getting some fools excited for his new book. The Republican party is a dying breed, and people like Limbaugh are being used to facilitate the process.

Pragmatic   May 24th, 2009 4:09 pm ET

So the primary forces of darkness within the Republican Party – Rove and Limbaugh – are ganging up on the man who has the most integrity of any of the current crop of prominent Republicans.

Rove was the spin doctor behind the administration that discredited America in the eyes of the world, and Limbaugh was its de facto media mouthpiece. Both are extreme right wing zealots. Neither are at all credible.

Powell, while he made some mistakes in the lead up to the Iraq war, is a moderate who adds credibility to the Republican Party.

If the Republicans choose the Rove-Limbaugh path over that walked by Powell, the Democrats will be in power for a very long time.

Hmmm.....to quote Karl Rove regarding his siding with Limbaugh over Powell...."Ultimately," Rove said, "the debate between Limbaugh and Powell is a "false" one because neither is a candidate for public office." I agree, and wouldn't logic dictate that the so called "duel" or debate between Cheney and Obama is also a false one because, and I quote Rove, "neither is a candidate for public office." In other words, the MEDIA should ignore Cheney, there is absolutely no reason to keep putting that "has been" out front row and center, except, let me think....oh,yes, I know...it's for RATINGS.

Corporate News Media side with Limbaugh. What's new and who outside of CNN/FoxNews cares?

John   May 24th, 2009 3:52 pm ET

The likes of Powell and Ridge and Megan McCain, should lead the party forward and away from these ‘black-and-white moralists.’ A new, more progressive version of the Republican party would gain a huge chunk of independents. It seems inevitable. For awhile there would be three parties—but things are so out of balance now… we might as well get started!

The Party of NO is only “pro-life” so they will be able to kill the “babies” 18 years later as soldiers in an elective religious war.   May 24th, 2009 3:52 pm ET

Limbaugh's popularity rating is just 19% in the American public and 21% of the American public identifies as a republiKLAN.

It would appear the limbaugh lemmings are achieving "party purity" but with numbers like that, you will NEVER again achieve any political power!

Who cares what Rove or Limpnoodle have to say? Oh yeah,,, the ditto heads that can't think for themselves. However they CAN memorize talking points as long as the words aren't too big.

Colin Powell has served this country proudly. It's amazing to me that when he disagrees with where the Republican party is going, he is immediately torn apart!

Karl Rove and Rush Limbaugh are BOTH losers! If you want to help the Republican party you should get both of them to resign. While they're at it, they can take Dick Cheney with them!

S.B.   May 24th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

Rove is wrong. The bigotry and hatred spewed by Limbaugh appeals to a small group of narrow minded Americans, but does not represents the thoughts and feelings of most people. It saddens me to see the number of Republicans willing to cow-tow to him. I'd take Colin Powell over Limbaugh any day. Powell has served his country in exemplary ways, and what has Limbaugh done other than run off his mouth to rake in money?

Eric   May 24th, 2009 3:40 pm ET

"A house divided against itself cannot stand." Now it seems many Republicans choose Limbaugh over Lincoln. So be it. The fissure is even deeper: the Cheney-Rove camp embraces Bush's 1st term over his 2nd, esp. regarding the policies of the so-called "war on terror". One must assume that George W. himself would not repudiate his 2nd term (as Cheney recently did). So let's call it the NeoCon camp (i.e. pro-war, pro-torture & ironically pro-life) including Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld, Palin, Limbaugh. Then there's the Realist (or Pragmatic) camp including Powell, Ridge, now both Bushes (!), and notably McCain. Oh yes, let's add both Lincoln & Reagan to make the point more explicitly (esp. Reagan's 2nd term). Now the question Republicans must ask, given that they still believe in a democratic form of government (as I sincerely hope), is simply put: When and how will members of the NeoCon camp be elected to office - and to what office?

Sean from Marin   May 24th, 2009 3:40 pm ET

Finally, the plain truth from Texas.

They are now, and have always been, extremists for the right. W and team beleive Limbaugh is more Republican than Powell??? Please, define more clearly what kind of Republican that is exactly? The fact that Powell won a war for the first Bush and tried to talk the second Bush out of one is apparently beside the point.

The real point, we discover, is clear: support our extreme POV (a la Rush) or be cut off (a la Powell). Most in the public sector would not cut off their noses to spite their face so publicly, but we salute Mr. Rove for his candor. Keep it up.

Who CARES what Carl Rove thinks. He has absolutely NO CREDIBILITY since he was the architect of the last 8 years of Disaster! The only network that gives him any credibility (Fox News) has absolutely NO CREDIBILITY as a news organization either. He was the architect that stole the first election – and also changed the voting landscape of the nation to be biased to favor Republican voters. He is culpable for making this LESS of a democracy!

He is also the architect of the strategy of hitting the opponents strong points to make them a negative. Thus you have these cowards like Rove, Cheney, and Bush that have never served our country – attacking the true patriots and heroes of our country! And the lemmings believe them – just like they did with Hitler before WWII.

Limbaugh:
entertainer
drug addict
thrice married
never served his country.

Powell:
4 star general
Leader of the Joint Chiefs
Secretary of State.

No wonder Bush was such a lame president having advisors making these difficult decisions.

it is sad what these few people are doing to the republican party . life says we need to groups of people that can question each other in a debate. but when a small group of wanna bees get the medias attention and has nothing better to do but be negative about something a new president is finally doing right . not just for the USA but for the world.
would like to see Rove have to take responsability for his part in the Bush administrations desruction of the United States of America

Haoleboy   May 24th, 2009 3:20 pm ET

Neither one of them is worthy to lace up General Powell's boots. On this Memorial Day let's remember that General Powell served his country by putting his life on the line time after time and asked for nothing in return. Limbaugh, Cheney, Rove – all they ever did was take from their country and ask others to sacrifice. The quicker we have these folks in our rear view mirror the better.

A registered republican   May 24th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

It figures that loser Rove would side with loser Limbaugh. Their egos cloud their thinking so rather than realizing they diminshed the party, they still think they are the saviors of the party.

2thpick   May 24th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Karl is only saying that to protect himself from the wrath of Rush. No Republican dare speak against His Immenseness.

az voter   May 24th, 2009 3:18 pm ET

I am a long time middle-of-the-road Republican, and observer of American politics.

If I had to pick a starting point for the overhaul of our party I'd start with a Rovectomy and Limbaughtomy.

The sooner these two blowhards can pied-pipe their loyal followers out of the Republican party the better off we'll be.

Clay   May 24th, 2009 3:17 pm ET

Rats always stick together.

Ennis, LA   May 24th, 2009 3:17 pm ET

Does Powell truly believe the GOP should be the mirror image
of the opposing party? I fail to see how this would serve the
interests of the American electorate. American politics demands balance & diversity. Powell's me-tooism won't work. He should just
pull an Arlen Specter and become a Democrat. Rush is right.

drummajor66   May 24th, 2009 3:15 pm ET

I agree, I pick Limbaugh/Cheny over Ridge/Powell.
I want the Repugs to stay far right, I want the Dems to move even farther left. That is the only way we will get a third party. An independent party that really represents the people. Obama is a sham, he's a moderate Repug in dem clothing. Powell is a moderate dem in Repug clothing, they are all elitist who believe their only obligation is to Wall street.
Obama doesn't realize that to rebuild an economy you start from the bottom up, meaning you rebuild communities. You invest in people not institutions. Reagan tried that & we all know how well trickle down economics worked for us.
So since they are saying "let them eat cake" to everyday Americans, I say let them fight & wipe each other out. Then maybe we can get a real political party & a real government, of, by & for the people.

DP   May 24th, 2009 3:14 pm ET

Rove siding with Cheney and Limbaugh...Well, how unexpected...This is almost as shocking to hear as it would be that Jack the Ripper enjoys the work of Hannibal Lecter, or that Darth Vader supports the policies of the Emperor. Rove is the kind of nerdy weasel that always needs a stronger personality to genuflect to. Rove, your little more than the barely tolerable toadie following the other kids around, trying hard to say the things you think will make them like you.

Carol   May 24th, 2009 3:14 pm ET

Let Rove and Cheney keep on talking. It is digging the trench deeper with every word from their mouths for the GOP.

Troy, NJ   May 24th, 2009 3:10 pm ET

Rove and Limbaugh did more to wreck the party than any democrat could have ever done. I think its very intresting that two people who never wore the uniform to protect this country attacks a decorated veteran like Mr. Powell. If a democrat would have done this; these two would have called it treason. They are the reason for a shrinking base, and if the continue this type of strategy against those with different opinions the democrats will rule for 50 years.

S M R   May 24th, 2009 3:08 pm ET

Building your base on lies is not the American way. Please continue to show your ass and the majority of the American People will vote your party out again and again. After the drubbing the GOP took in 2006 and 2008, it shows their average I.Q is in the 40's or is that too high.

Claudia in Houson   May 24th, 2009 3:06 pm ET

Can the GOP get any worse, it appears so with Karl Rove, Cheney, Gingrich, McConnell, Steele and none other than Limbutt himself. There is no place in the Republican party for the young who speak out for change, they will never relinquish their throne of the "old white guys party".

Real world says Rove and Limbawl are dillholes. Just one civilian's opinion.

Hawaii gal   May 24th, 2009 3:02 pm ET

Ken Allison   May 24th, 2009 3:00 pm ET

Rove and Chaney are both irrelevant. Their time has past. Who cares what either one of them has to say. As for Rush - he is and always has been a blow hard with a following of simple minded morons. Maybe he should take a few more pain pills and slither off into the night.

Rove, Bush and Cheney are no longer in power, they had their turn and they screwed everything up. Now let let the intellegent man with a vision, President Obama, do his job and get this country back on track. Enough of this criticism after only a few short months in office, it takes time to fix the momunental screw-ups of the Bush administration.

Kuriya   May 24th, 2009 2:58 pm ET

Do these republican think that you have to vote for republican candidate to be a republican? I can be a republican and vote for whoever I want. That I know is seeking my interest and has the interest of people not left or right wing ideas. If the so call party head like Rove, Limbaugh fox news, the senate and republican as they considered themselves think that every republican has to vote for republican candidate never mind what the candidate think they are in for a big surprise. Let them keep up the good work.

Cheney and Rove picking Limbaugh over Powell? Look at these three names: Cheney, Rove, Limbaugh. If your still a Republican, you gotta be embarrased. A man who has dedicated his life to public service and the protection of this nation in the military gets pushed aside by these COWARDS who have done nothing but hide behind their lies. These guys represent the Republicans? Libertarians, here I come.

Hilarious. Neither of these two idiots (Rove, Limbaugh) ever served in the military. Now they are dissing Gen. Powell who, unlike them, never had any qualms about serving his country . Typical right-wing republican hyprocrisy.

Who cares what Karl Rove thinks or says? The " architect " is a joke. Its apparent he built a house of cards for the Republicans. I certainly dont want him building anything for me!

MJHS1967   May 24th, 2009 2:50 pm ET

ib   May 24th, 2009 2:49 pm ET

I have lost all respect for Powell. He slams the GOP everytime he speaks and he backed Obama for what I think is one reason; Obama is black. In my humble opinion Powell is a racist. Many conservatives have been accused of that because they didn't vote for Obama. I guess I'm learning from the best at spewing hate: liberals.

Dixie   May 24th, 2009 2:48 pm ET

And is Rove running for office? He and Palin should pair up for 2012. Rove the king of dirty tricks and Palin the speaker who mongers violence from the crowds should provide some good entertainment. Maybe Lin-Bah the Hitler of radio could manage their campaign.

critical observer   May 24th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

Who are these people? Rush Limburgh, Karl Rove, Dick Chaney and Liz Chaney too. How did they become so significant? Do they have anything meaningful to contribute to society?

Steve Henderson   May 24th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

Rove picks Limbaugh over Powell, no surprise there. He would probably pick Hitler over Powell.

Richard L   May 24th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

No surprise that Rove would chose the ex-druggie college flunkout over the patriotic soldier with integrity.

alvino   May 24th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

This proves that fat is thicker than party unity for the right wing nuts.

Barbara   May 24th, 2009 2:45 pm ET

And Powell's vision for the GOP is a much better one. Rove just wants all those right-wingers out there on his side. His side lost. The Democrats had the same problem and were able to rebuild. If the GOP keeps this up, there is no hope for them. I feel as a long-time GOP member that they no longer care what I think or want. They just listen to those far right-wingers – like fat mouth Rush. He is such a joke. He has divided the GOP that they no longer want moderates like I am. I have more respect for General Powell then I ever did for the likes of Rove.

Michele   May 24th, 2009 2:45 pm ET

And that about sums it up for Rove. He chooses a bombastic entertainer who lives to divide people over an intelligent statesman like Powell, who only ever wanted the best for this country. Another Republican who should just shut up and go away!

Gary SC   May 24th, 2009 2:45 pm ET

CNN) – In the ongoing war of words between Rush Limbaugh and Colin Powell, top Bush strategist Karl Rove is siding with the popular talk radio host.

Now that's a surprise, isn't it?

M. Ames, Syracuse   May 24th, 2009 2:44 pm ET

Shocker. Karl "either you're with us or you're not a real American" Rove sides with Limbaugh in an interview with FOX News. FOX is such a joke....Gingrich, Rove, North......sounds "Fair and Balanced" to me.

By the way....why isn't he in jail?

Fred Marti   May 24th, 2009 2:43 pm ET

Ms Russell   May 24th, 2009 2:43 pm ET

The democrats will be the adults in the room, while the republicans embrace each other is a lovefest: "You're a good republican. No you're a good republican. No you are." and "I love you more. No I love you more. No, no, I love you more."

Lois Jeffrey   May 24th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

The GOP is not going to be successful in recruiting candidates who will appeal to more individuals than the base if candidates believe that they must walk, talk, and speak like Rush Limbaugh or suffer the wrath of the base if they do not. That's why the comments by Tom Ridge, Colin Powell and others are helpful to the party, providing they are not instantly censored by Mr. Limbaugh. Mr. Limbaugh's dominant power in the GOP is evidenced by the fact that Mr. Rove felt compelled to take Mr. Limbaugh's side when talking about Mr. Powell 's interview today. As long as Mr. Limbaugh is perceived to lead and speak for the party, the party will continue to shrink to its base.

george   May 24th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

Carl, please say you are "just Kidding". You choose a drug addict talk show personality over a decorated General. Carl, you may be more dangerous than Dick Cheney. Oh, can you tell Cheney to tell his daughter to shut up. Thanks

Gary   May 24th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

This should no surprise to anyone. Mr. Rove picks a conservative over a democrat or at the very best an ultra liberal republican in the mode of Spectre. I would agree 100% with Mr. Rove in taking Limbaugh over the traitor to all that the republican party stands for Powell. The best thing you can say about Powell is that he is a RINO and is no asset to the republicans, he is a detriment.

Marshal   May 24th, 2009 2:35 pm ET

I choose Jabba the Hutt over Karl Rove. If I had to pick between the two, Jabba has just a slightly larger chin.

My decision, of course, is based solely on chin size.

J.L.L. Indiana   May 24th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

Where would the Democratic Party be today if they had let their left wing base rule the party. Right wing extremist would rather destroy the republican party than relinquish their absolute power. Republicans are doomed.

Chad   May 24th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

How fitting. Rove, the college dropout, Bush cronie supports the ranting radio show host over a man who's dedicated his life to service of our country. This on the day before Memorial Day. Honor the troops, not the chickenhawks.

Wow! Its amazing how the GOP let the spin doctors run the show. Honorable people like Powell, who served his country are tossed like garbage. They choose people like Rush, Hannity, and other spin doctors to define their party. No wonder they cant hold on to elected seats. The one who have a proven track record of being patroits are irrevalent. The ones who spit poison and have never served their country are more revalent in the GOP!

The biggest purveyor of hate in this country is the president himself. His vile and tortured explanations that contradict facts have driven a wedge between honest people.

It is time now for the American people to insist on the president coming clean and speaking honestly or to resign.

Penny   May 24th, 2009 2:26 pm ET

Just goes to show you what an idiot Karl Rove is to pick Rush Limbaugh over Colin Powell. The only club Rush has picked up is a golf club. He knows nothing about serving in the military and neither does Karl or for that matter Cheney. None of them has served their country. Why are they running their mouths? Sad!

Just the facts   May 24th, 2009 2:26 pm ET

Two political realities the country can be thankful for occurring: the first is Rush's demonizing of General Powell and the second is Clown( or is it Carl) Rove's confirming Rush's view. These two political" has beens" only strengthen the country, the people and the Democratic Party. Now if only Newt and Sarah can sign on board; the political circus train ( AKA the Republican Right) can reach its final destination, the Republican Party Cemetery. At that point, perhaps, the party of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Clifford Case, Senator Baker and the plethora of long dormant thinking Republicans can, like the Phoenix, arise and take its legitimate position in American politics.

Sandy Carey   May 24th, 2009 2:26 pm ET

Excuse me, but does ANYONE really care what this little punk has to say? I realize that there are still a number of non thinking so called Americans out there who just go with the flow never bothering to check facts, think through an issue or stop watching reality TV shows, but come on! Karl Rove?? Dick Cheney?? Rush the Pig?? Are you kidding?! Remember something - anyone who says, as Devil Spawn Cheney has said, that the first responsibility of a Republican is to vote for a Republican, is not only missing the point of what this nation stands for, but is also as far from a patriot as one can possibly venture. Get with the program, guys and shut these moronic demons DOWN!

Truth-Bomb Thrower   May 24th, 2009 2:24 pm ET

The fact of the matter is Colin Powel has NEVER been a real republican. He declared himself a republican in the 1990's only because there was already too much competition for the black leadership of the democratic party. He didn't want to fight Jackson and Sharpton for leadership status. (He would have lost.)

The republican party MADE Colin Powell, and when it needed him the most, he tucked his tail between his legs and ran to the other side. Now he's trying to hedge his bets. He's a political prostitute. Whichever party can deliver him the most glory and prestige at any one time is the one he sides with. He may have been a hero in Vietnam, but in politics, he's a COWARD.

Bob   May 24th, 2009 2:20 pm ET

Of course he did. Why is that a surprise? They are borderline sociopaths. Rove, Cheney and Limbaugh all come from the same mindset. It has nothing to do with politics. Powell holds many of the same conservative views.

His strength intimidates them. They need to disparage him because they are insecure about their own weaknesses (which are many, physical and mental). It's a mental state. I know people who act EXACTLY like them.

Babs   May 24th, 2009 2:20 pm ET

Limbaugh and Rove are about ignorance and the people that follow ignorance. People who have grown up as hate mongers. People who don't have any gifts at alll for love, care and concern. They are pathetic little people with an adgenda filled with scare tatics, lies and fear mongering. I haven't a bit of respect for any of the such. Their lies follow them like a roll of toilet paper stuffed up the back of their shorts.

Collin Powell is a man of respect. A man who stands for what most Americans can believe in and relate too. He does represent the vision of what a lot of good honest people are looking for in the party.

When ever I hear Limbaugh I want to scream we aren't all that stupid... really we aren't. As far as Carl Rove, he just stands for the words DUMB LIAR.

Rove and Limbaugh should hold hands and go find an island all of their own and spend their days building up each others egoes. That island would sink in no time. Crap gets heavy.

Viola   May 24th, 2009 2:17 pm ET

This country is about doers not talkers. The motto "Better Dead than Right" should refer to the Republicans who can't see beyond their narrow point of view and condemn anyone who does. They better settle their differences 2010 is next year!

The democrackpipe folks here at CNN have yet another reason to tighten their sphincters.

Powell is more man than Limbaugh, Rove, and Cheney combined.

What are those Limbaugh-lovers poppin'? Some of his pills?

Richard Lombardo   May 24th, 2009 2:12 pm ET

Anything that comes out of Rove's mouth is false because he is simply not human. Before Lee Atwater died, he felt remorse for all the mean-spirited shenanigans when running Father Bush's presidential campaign. Rove, who is the essence of everythng that is wrong in politics will never feel remorse because he is without heart, soul, and compassion. He's probably bitter because he looks like a bird.

Sherry   May 24th, 2009 2:12 pm ET

Looks like all of the criminals (Cheney, Rove & Limbaugh) are sticking together . . . I think that speaks volumes in itself.

CNN never lets my comments go through   May 24th, 2009 2:12 pm ET

why IS that CNN? I read your website 99% of the time for the news so why is it that you didn't let two of my posts go through this weekend? Hmmmmm? I was Florida Mom or Floridian or some such name.

Meanwhile Rove is taking Limbaugh's side? Look at the two of them, pictures side by side, like seeks like.....you can put lipstick and ties on pigs but they still remain pigs....

Rove said, I don't think its an intelligent debate. Having said that, I pick Limbaugh...

Brilliant!

It is really discouraging that someone as decorated as Colin Powell has to be defended or explained against a windbag like Rush Limbaugh, Karl Rove or anyone. Their egos are way too large to even consider the fact they, Limbaugh and Rove, are loud mouthed, ridiculous and extremely tiresome. It is too bad the strategy, just ignore them and they will go away, never really works, nor does the communication of 'enough already'. This bickering is better left in the school yard, there is no purpose of it other than to stay in the news or to simply irritate almost everyone who sees it.

Operation Crush Rush   May 24th, 2009 2:09 pm ET

The day wouldnt have been complete without dragging out Limbaughs half brother,Carl Rove.I cant wait to see him in a bright orange jumpsuit and shackles.

HAWK IN TEXAS   May 24th, 2009 2:07 pm ET

Why isn't this slime ball sorry piece of trash in prision where he belongs. scum of humanity. ( CAN'T REALLY CALL HIM WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO)

Ken   May 24th, 2009 2:06 pm ET

In perhaps 30 years, historians studying the demise of the Republican party will come to the conclusion that Karl Rove's politics of personal destruction and hate is the common thread that hastened the downfall of a once mighty political party.

Bud Burgoon-Clark   May 24th, 2009 2:06 pm ET

Rove and Lameballs = two cowardly pigs who OUGHT to be tried for TREASON.

Bridgette   May 24th, 2009 2:03 pm ET

Well of course the two draft dodgers will side with each other. One was a dodger and one kept getting deferments. But naturally it's always people like that who want to send others people children to die. People who actually fought in the war like Colin Powell. Of course they will go against him.

Anonymous   May 24th, 2009 2:03 pm ET

From last blog...LOL
...little or know education beyon that of an elemetary child. If what you know about Powell, Cheney or limbaugh comes from network news, which is what you refer to. Than I have the sad task of informing you that you are misinformed and misguided. Please do some research on your own and take some writing classes.

Dynahog   May 24th, 2009 2:03 pm ET

I might add that Colin Powell is a Democrat by Association. He's the one that publicly stood up for Barrack Hussein Obama. Just like Arlein Specter is not a Republican, I don't think of Colin Powell as a Republican.

Collin Powell can say what he wants, but judgement is based on his performance. It is unlike any Republican I know.

Tariq   May 24th, 2009 2:03 pm ET

Well of course Rove is on Limbaugh's side! No one should be surprised.

Sorry, this is not news CNN

Darryl Schmitz   May 24th, 2009 2:03 pm ET

Interesting, Karl. Limbaugh, a (insert history of personal history as a contrast to sermons given to the rest of us) over a decorated veteran who led our forces during wartime. That pretty much says it all.

Michael   May 24th, 2009 2:02 pm ET

What a surprise—rove spews more hate on the republican propaganda channel. Like cheney, rove should be sitting in jail awaiting his trial for treason. There are few people on the planet more reprehensible than cheney, and rove is one of them. Rove has done everything he could to intimidate minorities from voting. If I’m not mistaken, he spent a few days last week answering questions about his role in the firing of the federal judges who refused to prioritize trumped up charges of voter fraud in order to keep minorities away from the polls. I’m not saying anything rove would disagree with; he is proud of being the propaganda chief for the bush administration. If the criminal justice system in America wasn’t a complete sham, rove would be in jail.

Nola   May 24th, 2009 2:02 pm ET

Please give us all a break and stop making what this person has to say news worthy.

Rick of AZ   May 24th, 2009 2:02 pm ET

It is Memorial Day Weekend. We should honor those Americans who gave their lives for this country. They died for the American Flag and the Republic for which it stands. Take time to find out what a Republic is this weekend, so you know why these brave men and women gave their lives for it.

sideon   May 24th, 2009 2:02 pm ET

Rove is despicable. Is he related to Limbaugh? They could be the same noxious and virulent gas bag, separated at birth.

Steve in AR   May 24th, 2009 2:02 pm ET

Idolize Limbaugh while talking about inclusion at the same time.
What's wrong with this picture?

Jimbo   May 24th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

Well Karl, I guess that makes your remarks just as non-relevant as well, doesn't it? Or, are you considering running for public office?

Lynn   May 24th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

Is Sunday now CNN's Republican Day...one hasbeen after another blithering on about nothing that has any relevance to what is important to average Americans even with their tarnished reputations and shaky legal standing.

wayne   May 24th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

wow..just wow...the republican party is dead...long live the democrats...

can anyone really define what a republican was..

Joanna   May 24th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

Well enough said i guess. These people are role models for the GOP? really, Rush, rove and Cheney? Didnt53% of the country loudly declare enough of there games and fear monger. Enough of there FAILED ideology and hateful tactics? Powell was a General in the most powerful military in the world and very well respected. the GOP would do themselves well if they got there head out of the butts and opened there ears. But, i guess this just helps the dems even more. good job GOP!

Peggy1133   May 24th, 2009 2:00 pm ET

Perhaps Rove chooses Limbaugh so that they can finally be united... since they were separated at birth!

Phillip Kavanaugh   May 24th, 2009 2:00 pm ET

Karl Rove and Rush Limbaugh versus Colin Powell? Are you kidding me?

Rove and Limbaugh are a cancer on the nation.

And because they are a cancer, they tear down one of the ONLY reasonable Republicans left - a man of intelligence, true stature and actual positive service to his country.

I am not and will never be a Republican, but General Powell is currently the antithesis, the antidote to the cretins Rove and Limbaugh.

What a world.

FactCheck   May 24th, 2009 2:00 pm ET

Probably because Limbaugh promised to share his "all you can eat" buffet coupons with him.

Dynahog   May 24th, 2009 1:59 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh rules.

His regular radio talk show is great. It's open to all points of view, but obviously truth comes out.

What irks Liberal Democrats is that Rush Limbaugh is a favorite of all U.S. Soldiers and Marines on duty everywhere in the World.

Then it rubs them in a painful spot when they can't compete with Rush, and the EIB Network he works for makes lots and lots of money.

Liberal Radio Talk shows usually have to operate on donations from Liberals. Well you know the rest...

Chris   May 24th, 2009 1:59 pm ET

This is not a false debate. This is "the" debate for the Republican Party.

Is the party still based in conservatism, or should it continue to move to the center (left) to appease the Democrats?

The only people I hear supporting Powell's viewpoint are liberals. And Powell voted for the liberal, when he could of voted for a moderate Republican. Powell has no Republican cred. If he wants to continue to try and speak for Republicans, he needs to open an office with a phone line and an address so we Republicans can EXPRESS our viewpoint to him.

Jeff W.   May 24th, 2009 1:59 pm ET

"I have always felt that the Republican Party should be more inclusive than it generally has been over the years". Wow, he's not even hiding his hatred. Another bloated, white male promoting intolerance. to side with Limbaugh is to basically say, "I hate anyone who isn't a rich, white, bloated male". Limbaugh is a cartoon character who takes the party line 100% of the time. You don't have any credibility if you can't occasionally ascknolwedge that your party is wrong about something, such as the past 8 years. I've always had little respect for Rove, now I officially have zero. The GOP has become so villainous. It's fun to watch them implode. I love waking up each day and seeing that Obama is in charge. What would the world be like of these horrible people were in charge. Oh yeah, right. Finally I have peace of mind.

JN   May 24th, 2009 1:59 pm ET

Rove sides with Limbaugh. Surprise?

Patriot   May 24th, 2009 1:58 pm ET

Now, there's a shocker! Anti-American Rove sides with bigoted, unpatriotic Lush Rimjob – neither of whom ever served his country – over a true patriot who has a well-thought-out message to convey. Unlike Colin Powell, I decided the Republican Party no longer met my standards long ago, but I appreciate his effort to breathe a little sense into it. Karl & Lush, unfortunately, typify the GOP as it evolved into what it is, and remains, today. Bravo Zulu to Powell, though.

WHAT A BULLETIN!!!   May 24th, 2009 1:58 pm ET

Of course he sides with Limbaugh. Pigs waller together. I wonder if Limbaugh thinks it only because hes white.

Nancy   May 24th, 2009 1:57 pm ET

Brilliant Karl. You are very welcome to follow that blowhard Rush Limbaugh into battle anytime. Good luck with that.

sorensen   May 24th, 2009 1:57 pm ET

Rove and Limbaugh.
800 pounds of irrelevant stupidity.

Brian - PA   May 24th, 2009 1:56 pm ET

And I'm surprised by this how?

TonyB   May 24th, 2009 1:54 pm ET

Rove is lucky he's not in jail.
The Party of One Item (abortion) is in big trouble.

Linzee   May 24th, 2009 1:54 pm ET

Oh, what a SHOCK that Rove would side with Limbaugh!

I fervently pray that Rove, Cheney, Gingrich and Limbaugh remain the face of the Republican party. Then I can rest assured that the party will remain the losing, regional party that it is today – just the way they made it in the Bush years.

SC, TX, GA, AL, MS, and LA – that is where the Republican party is, and where it will remain if Rove etc. have anything to say about it.

Jean   May 24th, 2009 1:54 pm ET

Libertarians really should be taking advantage of this weakness in the Republican party and launch a marketing campaign to turn people onto Libertarianism. It's time to replace the Republican party with something more in line with the needs of the people and the realities of the world. The Republicans are dinosaurs and they have a wrong-headed backward way of looking at the world that is too old!!

Karen   May 24th, 2009 1:53 pm ET

Rove and Limbaugh are two of a kind – why wouldn't they stick together. If I were Colin Powell, I would be flattered Rove didn't pick me. It would mean I was doing something right. They are both hate mongers and hopefully has beens. It seems the majority of the Republicans are starting to see the light.

LOL!!!!   May 24th, 2009 1:51 pm ET

The Republican fat mouths just keep digging a bigger ditch.

katiec   May 24th, 2009 1:51 pm ET

Of course he would.
Add Cheney and you have three of the most evil, disrespected men
in our country.
You know, birds of a feather.

Dave from Jacksonville   May 24th, 2009 1:51 pm ET

....and Karl Rove should be in prison along with the rest of the neo-CONs. Why do we care what that snake says?

Doug in Utah   May 24th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

Does anybody really care what this former advisor to a former president has to say?? For that matter, what' public office is he running for?

John in Tampa   May 24th, 2009 1:48 pm ET

"Ultimately, Rove said, the debate between Limbaugh and Powell is a "false" one because neither is a candidate for public office."

So I take it Rove is false also?

if [I] "had to pick [among] the [three]," I'd have to go with Powell. I do not approve of all his positions, but he is the only honorable man mentioned.

Dustin Bend, OR   May 24th, 2009 1:47 pm ET

Wow, what news! The only way I would have been shocked is if he had endorsed Powell.

Nila in KC   May 24th, 2009 1:47 pm ET

Of course Rove is siding with Limbaugh!

PIGGIES UNITE!!!

bobbie   May 24th, 2009 1:46 pm ET

The 2 blowhards should make a lovely couple...

John Sevigny   May 24th, 2009 1:46 pm ET

I have to admit I am surprised at the rhetoric flying about. Rush has made his point on Mr. Powell not agreeing with any of the current administrations policy. So why vote for the man? Until Mr. Powell can explain these bewildering thoughts I can,t rightly pay attention to his views.

JLR   May 24th, 2009 1:45 pm ET

What a surprise (Not). – Mr Rush Limbaugh – Stop talking about how you can improve AMERICA. How bout you run for President 2012 ? I have a strong feeling you wont. Why ? Cause you are ALL TALK ... Unless of course you are willing to prove us wrong.

virginia for obama   May 24th, 2009 1:45 pm ET

Wow!!!!!!!!!! What a Shocker?????

Bacchus   May 24th, 2009 1:44 pm ET

Of course Karl Rove picked Rush boy over Powell. Rove is a talking neocon head on FOX news. Rove makes Limbaugh look like a choir boy. Have we forgotten the swift boating attacks on Kerry and even the hushed allegations of an illegitimate child by Mccain when Rove was supporting Bush? This guy is so smarmy and disgusting

The Broker.   May 24th, 2009 1:44 pm ET

Barking Rover. Woof Woof!

C.R.   May 24th, 2009 1:44 pm ET

Another of Rove's nugget's of wisdom. LOL!

katiec   May 24th, 2009 1:43 pm ET

Here we go again. CNN headlining slime like Rove, embracing his every word.
CNN, we are really getting sick of your bias. Constantly shoving your pick of "experts" down our throats when all of them are hypocritical,
lying, dishonorable republicans. Course, they are who you support
but as a news media your should try to show a little integrity in your
reporting.
The republicans are trying to destroy our country and us, and you
appear to back them 100%. How disgraceful and sad.

Smart People   May 24th, 2009 1:43 pm ET

What a surprise...

I think what it boils down to is that Rove is just angry with the world because

A.) he looks like that

and

B.) Because he is mostly known for being another criminal that resulted from the Bush Administration.

inutah   May 24th, 2009 1:43 pm ET

It's sad because the loudest, most irrelevent people in the universe are making a joke out of the Republican party. Colin Powell demands respect because of his history with the military, and his capability to speak intelligently....Limbaugh reminds me of the adolescent bully, not only physically but mentally. Limbaugh is making a joke out of the Republican party...

John, Brooklyn, NY   May 24th, 2009 1:41 pm ET

I love it. Rush and Rove versus Powell and Ridge. Keep it up boys and the Republicans will be a mess for decades.

k3ndall   May 24th, 2009 1:41 pm ET

Rove's decision was solely based on race, not issues. Unless he as radical as the performer, but they both makes majority of people skin crawl

Lori   May 24th, 2009 1:39 pm ET

The beautiful thing is finally I too agree with Limbaugh, Cheney, and Rove, as a Democrat. I agree that the Republican party should move more to the right. I want to see President Obama in power for the next 8 years! I totally support the Republican party 100% on this one!

JB   May 24th, 2009 1:39 pm ET

Does anyone really care what the gasbag Rove has to say?!?

the Film Professor   May 24th, 2009 1:38 pm ET

Well, duh. Rove and Cheney are evil twins, after all.

JonDie   May 24th, 2009 1:37 pm ET

Surprise surprise, Rove, Cheney and Limbaugh, none of whom served their country even one day, hate Powell, the guy who did serve his country.

sharon in pa   May 24th, 2009 1:36 pm ET

i vote for Gen.Powell! As a Republican, he speaks for me.
