It was briefly mentioned somehwere that Ms. Sotomayor has had juvenile diabetes much of her life. My family has suffered extenisvely from this disease with functional impairment the last years of their lives (kidney disease, blindness. and heart disease) and with the exception of myself not even living to Ms. Sotomayor's present age. Even with improved care now available the life expectancy for juvenile diabetics is still well below the norm. To me, her long term health should be a consideration of at least as great importance to her appointment as some of the others (female, Hispanic) mentioned..

The court needs to reflect America. Of all those qualified this appoinment will add to the diversity of the court and will reflect the diversity of our country.

For those Liberals who don't know their history, Sotomayor is not the first Hispanic to be nominated to the Supreme Court. The first Hispanic to sit on the Supreme Court was Benjamin Cardozo, whom President Hoover appointed to the court in 1932. Perhaps we forget Cardozo because of historical amnesia. Or perhaps being eligible for two ethnic subcategories requires that a choice be made of one or the other, so that since Cardozo is both Jewish and Hispanic, once we label him the second Jew to be appointed to the court—Louis Brandeis was the first—he is ineligible to be considered Hispanic, even though he is of Sephardic (Spanish Jewish) ancestry. Or perhaps when we say “Hispanic,” we mean only “New World Hispanic,” in which case we should say so.
