Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe issued the following statement Tuesday on Sotomayor's nomination:
"Indisputably, this is an historic selection, as Sonia Sotomayor is just the third woman to be nominated to The Court and the first Hispanic American. I commend President Obama for nominating a well-qualified woman, as I urged him to do during a one-on-one meeting on a variety of issues in the Oval Office earlier this month.
"I also appreciate that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel called me personally this morning to inform me of the President's selection. As the process moves forward, I will apply the same standards of review that I have in the past - that any Supreme Court nominee should bring a balanced approach to cases, possess a strong intellect and suitable judicial temperament, and follow a disciplined judicial methodology in reaching decisions. Justices on the High Court sit for life, so the Senate must exercise this constitutional duty thoughtfully, and give careful and thorough consideration to Judge Sotomayor, as it should to every nominee. I share the view that the proper role of the judiciary is one of interpreting the Constitution and acts of Congress, not legislating from the bench. As such, I will carefully evaluate Sonia Sotomayor’s record and temperament in making my determination."

4th one Senator Snowe. Harriet Miers was nominated too but withdrew her nomination.
It is nice to see that MS Snowe is sticking with her liberal opinions. Will you please join Arlen Ms Snowe!!!
Olympia Snowe is a old rag that needs to fold up her towel and retire asd a private citizen
Snowe I urge you to leave the stupid party that you are apart of they don't want independent thinkers they only want robots
Senator Snowe shines again! Thank you Senator for being a voice of reason in a sea of noise!
Funny, alot of conservatives commented on Romney's article, but none here.
Sixty-one?
Thank you Senator Snowe for being a fair-minded Republican. If only more would follow your example . . .
Well, it sounds like she was not all that hepped up about this candidate, and got a heads up in advance. I only hpoe that the Republicans will understand that there is a need for a balanced court, with differing methods, which lends itself to better judgements. right now, there is too much "strong personality" on the right. This is a good choice to try and temper that somewhat.
We need more women and a more diverse ethnic background on the US Supreme Court. What we don't need are more ivy-league-educated east-coast people. This pick does not break at all from the mold in that regard. Another privileged person – just with different window dressing.
I like how some of the republicans and democrats both are giving good comments regarding the Supreme Judge selection. Now there may actually be an open and balanced conversation amongst both parties to hopefully confirm this nominee or decide why not in a sensible way; rather all the fighting with every decision President Obama makes – looks like this may be the start of both parties working together!
Olympia who???
You think that maybe Snowe is running for re-election soon?
Personally, I think Olympia touches up her hair. No woman her age has hair that black.
Shut it and come out of the closet already Olympia! You are a Democrat and should switch alongside your friend Spector!
We'll see what Snowe has to say after the rest of the Republicans thugs get their hands on her. She had better start preparing to join Spector on the winning side.
And in the meantime, the Pentagon has acknowledged that 14% of released Gitmo detainees, those very detainees who were deemed the least risky to release amongst all detainees held at Gitmo, returned to the battlefield after their release.
But don't worry, Obama has a plan.
Wrong boys at CNN she will not be the first Hispanic on the Court do your home work dudes! Benjamin Cordozo was the first 1932-1938 do your homework!!!!!!
