From

(CNN) - Joe Biden couldn't help but take a dig at his boss Wednesday when one of the vice president's teleprompter screens fell down during his commencement speech at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

"What am I gonna tell the president?" Biden said as a gust of wind knocked down his left teleprompter. "I'm gonna tell him his teleprompter is broken. What will he do then?"

The off-handed quip immediately drew laughter and some the loudest cheers of day from the graduates.

Obama has long been criticized from Republicans for at times appearing over reliant on a teleprompter, even during short and informal speeches. During the White House Correspondents Association dinner earlier this month, the president himself poked fun at his penchant for using a teleprompter.

"You know I had an entire speech prepared for this wonderful occasion, but now that I am here, I am going to try something a little different - I am going to speak from the heart," Obama said jokingly as his teleprompter rose from the floor.

"B. Allow the editors to rid the page of offensive remarks."

CNN, of course, defines "offensive" as anything that doesn't further leftie talking points.

Nero   May 27th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

To Kevin Denver Colorado... you have the best point I've read so far. With as much press as he gets, he will definitely be one of the most, if not the most scrutinized president ever.

Nero   May 27th, 2009 10:02 pm ET

so many people here need to get over this. It's not even a story. I give my best friends crap all the time. I bet Obama got a chuckle out of it. You think he really cares? Get real!

JonPeter   May 27th, 2009 9:55 pm ET

Maybe Rush and Newt should use a telepromter more often, with the text writtten by someone far more intelligent than they are...

...one second thought it might not work, they'd trip all over words with 3 syllables or more. Look what happened to Bush jr.

Gary   May 27th, 2009 9:47 pm ET

The irony is that Biden desparately needs a teleprompter.

What Obama needs is a plan for balancing the budget.

Steve   May 27th, 2009 9:42 pm ET

What is so amazing to me isn't the teleprompter usage, but how poorly he Obama speaks without it. The contrast is so great...the mumbling fumbling stuff he says.

Harvey for Obama   May 27th, 2009 9:41 pm ET

Biden was a mistake. A big disappointment as far as I am concerned. But Obama....big time success.

jim   May 27th, 2009 9:34 pm ET

For the record, Obama did not graduate summa cum laude from Columbia, nor did he graduate at the top of his class at Harvard Law School. In fact, he has refused to release his grades. In addition, he was not a Professor. His title was Lecturer (which is a big difference). These are the facts.

Obama 2012   May 27th, 2009 9:33 pm ET

if the people of this country had any idea how little this puppets run this country, they might flip out. the snot nosed staffers running around thinking this system a big army navy football game, they are running this country. that would be the only excuse how our president thinks we have 56 states, right? oh, that was w/o teleprompter. uh, the kids are running this country and the big figure heads along for the ride. ask them.

Charlie   May 27th, 2009 9:22 pm ET

This would be funny if it wasn't true.

Sari   May 27th, 2009 9:20 pm ET

OMG hilarious. Nice to see our leaders keeping their sense of humor after the campaign dust has settled. I'm not sure why people expect the WH staff to suddenly be dour after the election, anyway. Our not-quite-comfortable allies, and even many of those who remain neutral to us, historically tend to warm to us when our leaders are decidedly non-robotic.

Mike   May 27th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

Obama said, "I'm a Christian. And so, although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue, I do believe that tradition, and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman."

Not sure why this is such a big deal? Presidents are figureheads, not the real brains in the administration. Not much different from being a news anchor.....ya read what others have written. Talking heads are what this generation is all about.

Liberal Democrats are Pathetic   May 27th, 2009 9:00 pm ET

Pretty sad when your own Vice President is making fun of you. There have been more gaffes in this administration in less than six months than there was in the whole Bush presidency. The only difference is that if a liberal makes a gaffe, then it is forgiven.

Peter E   May 27th, 2009 8:59 pm ET

There is nothing wrong with using a teleprompter and preparing to speak clearly. Dubya used teleprompters all the time and still never learned to pronounce the word 'nuclear' correctly!

RLG   May 27th, 2009 8:49 pm ET

Although I am a big supporter of President Obama, I'm wondering if he picked the right person for vice president. VP Biden always seems to put his foot in his mouth.

Proud DHS radical   May 27th, 2009 8:45 pm ET

I guess the boss will send Joe out of the country soon. Biden is only parroting what the rest of us knows, that Obama without a teleprompter is nothing more than a poor community organizer.

Pamela   May 27th, 2009 8:41 pm ET

Why would anyone test anything nuclear? This is an outrage how about our environment.

Charles   May 27th, 2009 8:37 pm ET

It's so nice to have a president who can speak. Who cares if he uses a teleprompter? George W. Bush could not speak with or without one. I'm so glad those days are gone.

so big deal, everyone uses a teleprompter, the evening news uses it!...

cal   May 27th, 2009 8:32 pm ET

I never thought I'd like Biden, but he such a constant source of entertainment. The only bigger joke is the guy who put him up as VP and the people who elected him. He's just way too funny. I am glad that Obama selected him for VP. He's the only one in the Obama administration bringing Reps and Dems together in laughter and joy.

FYI...The term "mooly" is derived from the Italian word for eggplant – melanzana (usually pronounced "mool-in-yan"). It refers to the dark skin of African Americans, similar to that of the vegetable.
It is a hateful term, in this context as offensive as the "N" word.
CNN...Please moderate these remarks, and research what they mean before posting.
Thanks

President Obama will go down in history as the greatest orator of all presidents. You people need to find something else to howl about. He is a perfectionist and wants his speech to be perfect. What's wrong with that?

God Bless you President Obama. Keep up the good work!

jcow   May 27th, 2009 6:30 pm ET

I'm wondering something... The networks set up their main camera (the live feed) directly in front of the President's podium – for a head on shot. Since Obama uses teleprompters on his left and right and rarely looks straight ahead are they going to move the main camera platform to the side?

Peachy Keen   May 27th, 2009 6:25 pm ET

JOSEPH BUTTACAVOLI, you have to be one of the stupidest posters I have ever seen on this site. Absolutely ignorant. About everything. You have obviously forgotten that those thousands of people who died on September 11, died under Bush's watch.

fishy fish   May 27th, 2009 6:18 pm ET

President Obama's teleprompter is the Republicans' worst enemy. Why? It allows the president to always be on point in his speeches, which they ( Republicans) hate. They ( Republicans) are hoping that the President says stupid stuff in his speeches like Bush did.

Alicia   May 27th, 2009 6:16 pm ET

Toni from Texas   May 27th, 2009 6:05 pm ET

The President and Vice President both have a wonderful sense of humor. There is also no shame in using a teleprompter for speeches when you are the leader of the free world. The President has a lot on his plate. Besides, who has time to memorize anything in 2009. Lighten up folks – there is no need to be rude about something so trivial.

The funny part about saying Obama is not bright is that he beat the pants off of all his who apposed him. Even if you think the media was in the tank for him. It's too bad that CNN has to sour this with the perjorative "mocks." Both Joe Biden and the President appear normal, affable individuals who've enjoyed their respective times in the limelight and can take a joke at each others' expense.

Our past President didn't have a clue and his VP has turned everything he touches into fractional danger zones. Yet CNN gives him headlines like a hero.

Is it the need to provocate to make money or is CNN really in the trap? Get a clue about objectivity and maybe you can enjoy having a competent Pres & VP for awhile.

susan   May 27th, 2009 5:50 pm ET

It's fine to use a teleprompter when you are delivering a speech, but you have to question a politician's sincerity when he needs a teleprompter to say he loves his wife. He ought to know what he thinks and how to express himself on most issues without a teleprompter. He's scripted because his whole campaign and presidency is one big public relations operation. Things are written for him to say that the public wants to hear. People hear them and think he's great. Then he does the opposite and the public doesn't pay attention. Examples of hypcorisy? No earmarks except 9400 of them; No military tribunals but not really; no lobbyists working in my administration, except the ones I want to have. There are so many more examples but I'm out of space.

This is where it all comes out. Cafferty reels people in, and the idiots come out to play. That goes for you, Republicans. And that goes for you, Democrats.

I'm a Republican. I don't care if the man uses a teleprompter everywhere he goes. Is there a noticeable difference between his speech patterns when switching to "off the cuff?" Yes. Of course there is. He wouldn't be human if that didn't happen. Did anyone listen to Bush, or Biden for that matter, off the cuff? They're awful.

Honestly though, to those of you calling out Republicans repeatedly on this thread, you look silly. Because obviously you outnumber any Republican that can write a sentence by a wide margin, and even those Republican posters are questionable. Because it sounds rehearsed.

I don't think the President is sitting around worrying because Biden made a joke about him using a teleprompter. The President is an adult, he makes fun of himself. And if he didn't like it he could call Joe to the Oval Office and have afew words with him. But if President Obama could take all the names the Republicans have been calling him, and he can show class and dignity, while he is being call everything, but a child of God. He can take this joke by Joe. As usually the HATERS trying to make something out of nothing. What people like that Butthead, guy don't understand is the President and First Lady could care less what name he calls them. If this put food on his table or a roof over his head, or make his life better, so be it. But the Obamas haven't gotten were they are at by letting racists fools like him stop them. Obama uses a teleprompter to not say Um about 473 times in a 40 minute speech. That makes him smart., although he has had some speeches where he said Um and Ah constantly.

When Bush said Um and Ah, well, that made him dumb. Gotcha.

If people actually listened to what Obama was saying they wouldn't think he was so smart.

But I guess all his gaffes just make him look smarter, right? Right?

Curt   May 27th, 2009 5:36 pm ET

Racism and hate mongering aside ( Joe Butt ) , President Obama has more intelligence than most of the postings I have read on this silly little news story. I remember the entire time a very popular Clinton was in office there were rabid Losers crying about anything Clinton. I really do not understand the mentality of any person who has such hate.

We have reached a patrician level of stupidity. Why would Biden “insult” his boss? He would not. He has been known for years to come off with a quick joke that sometimes does not seem funny. I am glad to see the refreshing and honest humanity that Biden represents.
Obama is a Law Professor. Hello serious educational degrees, IQ and plus plus plus… Jealousy from high school drop outs and bigots that have never studied or passed any college course really hurt his feelings. I am sure he cry’s to sleep every night from all the mean things people say.
Oh on Teleprompters, who cares?

Dave in Illinois   May 27th, 2009 5:36 pm ET

Democrats are American Al Quaeda. – and republicans are the American taliban, words mean nothing when they aren't true. But the FACT remains that republicans say they kept america safe but they forgot that 911 happened on THEIR watch. You can say it was planned twelve years prior but it still happened during the rethuglican watch when they supposedly were keeping us safe.

Piia   May 27th, 2009 5:34 pm ET

I like that he chose to speak from the heart after the teleprompter incident. Obama would be lost without one, but I think all presidents should take a lesson from Bill Clinton-he knew his speeches by heart.

Doraine Gordon   May 27th, 2009 5:29 pm ET

President Obama is the best speaking President I have heard in my lifetime. He can use the teleprompter better than anyone too. He comes across as being very smart. I like the way he always keeps Joe Biden by his side. That shows the people that these guys get along very well. We need more togetherness in our country. The Republicans are constantly trying to keep our country divided. That is why we are slowly replacing all of them with Democrats!!

CAMI - Queen of the "in moderation" he**hole.   May 27th, 2009 5:29 pm ET

@ Joseph Buttawhatever:

If you don't like the "hood" why don't you do something to get yourself out of there, instead of waiting for the government to do it for you?

I'd rather see someone use a teleprompter than, constantly have to look at the top of their head when they look down to read their notes every other sentence.

tony   May 27th, 2009 5:29 pm ET

Use of a teleprompter is indicative of someone who likes to be prepared before speaking in public– nothing more.

Jenny   May 27th, 2009 5:28 pm ET

LOL. This was pretty funny and I am a Dem. It was a joke. Stop taking everything so seriously. Joe has a good sense of humor. Maybe someof the late night guys can use it.

Debbie in Texas   May 27th, 2009 5:28 pm ET

If you are giving a speech that will be heard around the world, you are an idiot if you don't use a teleprompter or some note cards. If you have ever spoken in front of a large crowd, you know what I mean. If you say "um" 50 times during a speech or forget what you were going to say, that is much worse. Obama might be the president, but he is also human.

Biden should be slapped on the hand for disrespecting the president.
He should be setting an example for the citizens of this country, not acting a fool.

Democrats are American Al Quaeda.   May 27th, 2009 5:28 pm ET

LOL, "9/11 happened on a Republican's watch"

Well, more than half of the hijackers were already in office by the time Bush took the oath of office, it was coimpletely planned during Clinton's watch, Clinton could have accepted Bin Laden 3 times and that would have probably short circuited 9/11, and Clinton refused to even brief Bush because Clinton bought into the BS way Gore was trying to steal the election, and Bin Laden said he started planning because he was emboldened by the way we responded to terrorism in the 90s.

9/11 was about 90% Dem fault.

JOSEPH BUTTACAVOLI   May 27th, 2009 5:27 pm ET

Once You Vote Black   May 27th, 2009 5:25 pm ET

This is like a set up. CNN sets you up with a story like this so the GOP can come out swinging. Little do they know getting upset about a teleprompter makes you look stupid and drives GOP members on the fence to become indy or go Dem. You take the bait and fall of your own weight. Smarten up GOP, pounce on Barack Husain Obama when he does something wrong, not just because his name is mentioned.

JOSEPH BUTTACAVOLI   May 27th, 2009 5:24 pm ET

You CANNOT be the President of the Harvard Law Review, a constitutional law professor, a graduate of Harvard Law school, who argues legal cases, does press conferences and town hall meetings, and runs for the highest office in the land for nearly 2 years without being able to speak well publicly!!! Most people criticizing on here would soil their shorts and stumble all over themselves if they had to do half of the public speaking that Obama had to do BEFORE he ran for office....please stop with the teleprompter nonsense...its really getting old!

brad   May 27th, 2009 5:23 pm ET

What's the big deal with the teleprompter usage. He either use that or read from a paper like others. Both are the same thing. Prepared speeches. However, that being said. Biden was funny.

John - New York, NY   May 27th, 2009 5:22 pm ET

What is this stuff I'm reading about "blame for 9/11?"

What the hell is wrong with some of you people? Republican AND Democrat? Why does it HAVE to be someone's fault? Why don't we blame the people who actually perpetrated the crime?

Bill Clinton ignored Bin Laden at crucial moments. But when he DID try and intervene, Republicans stated that he was trying to deflect attention from one of his many scandals.

When George W. Bush received critical intelligence on Al Qaeda before 9/11, they noted it, but didn't do much. On the flip side, does anyone know how much intelligence they get on a day to day basis?

Some of you are pretty...well..sick. That's all I can say.

Once You Vote Black   May 27th, 2009 5:22 pm ET

Exactly, Adele. We had a 'shoot from the hip' President and look how well that turned out. Using a teleprompter is standard. GW Bush used one, it just didn't seem like it because he either didn't know what was being written for him or just couldn't understand the words. I am happy to have a President who is overly prepared.

The funniest part? EVERYONE uses a teleprompter nowadays. EVERYONE. The whole issue arose because someone was making fun of one of Obama's speaking ticks...his tendency to "uh" when he's thinking through how he wants to say something or what to say next. I'll take that over a mindless zombie who memorizes and repeats by rote anyday.

JM   May 27th, 2009 5:04 pm ET

Seriously, who cares if he uses a teleprompter?? I doubt all of those making fun of it could remember every word of every little thing you ever say, so why should he be required to do the same??

Sherry   May 27th, 2009 5:03 pm ET

I don't understand why using a teleprompter is drawing such negative comments. I honestly don't care if he uses a teleprompter or notes for his speeches. What I DO care about is how he runs the country. I am always amazed at the things people find to criticize other about. Give it a rest and find something more constructive to say or do.

So who says Obama writes all the stuff on his teleprompter?
Obama has to watch every little word he says? That suggest George Bush has more courage, he said he didn't pay attention to polls and "Bring 'em on!"
Obama is not courageous but yes, he watches every little word he says, that is true. Does that mean he is fearful of Rush Limabaught jumping on every little word he says?

I am aghast at the people who are questioning Barack Obama's intelligence. He is one of the most intelligent men ever to hold the office of President. His qualifications are impeccable. Laurence Tribe called him "the most brilliant student I ever had," and that's saying something (although I suspect most of the critics here have no idea who Laurence Tribe is, which is saying something about THEM).

You can try to delude yourselves into thinking that Obama is a dimwitted empty suit, but it only serves to make you look idiotic and possibly racist. Admit it–most of you think that Obama was some kind of affirmative action student at Harvard Law School. I bet you don't know that he submitted a race-blind application. But then, I wonder if any of you could find Harvard on a map.

Simmy, you poor kool-aid drinker. He does not write his own stuff. When he does try to wing it, he stumbles like the fool he is. Oh, and that butt kicking you are refering to. Lets look at the numbers. McCain/Palin lost by less than Kerry did. Hmmmm..... so by your definition Kerry got his butt kicked. ROFLOL... Seriously, use the brain God gave you and do some research.

jm for sc   May 27th, 2009 4:52 pm ET

Kevin Denver Colorado, that is a true statement.

I would like to know the difference in reading from a printed document and reading from the teleprompter? Could it be- he likes keeping his head up while reading rather than looking down?

Maybe our last president needed to keep his head down because he had more to hide.

Biden and Obama loves each other, don't let the media fool you.

Tom Hanna   May 27th, 2009 4:51 pm ET

It must be a slow news day if you news "experts" consider Biden's comment a dig. Where I come from a dig is a mild insult. I don't think
the VP's comment was a dig. It was just a unworthy of the news comment, that CNN and the rest of the media uses to keep the public's attention.... I've been watching more MSNBC lately because of this kind of reporting...

Rod   May 27th, 2009 4:51 pm ET

JOSEPH BUTTACAVOLI   May 27th, 2009 4:50 pm ET

At least Bush didn't let are country down when we were in danger people forgot about that. over 4000 people died in one single day in september. so don't tell me bush started this war. you forget on that day you could have asked dem or rep and they were all ready to get even.

colokid777   May 27th, 2009 4:50 pm ET

Biden is pure comic gold...but because he's tied to Obama, you won't see anyone making fun of him.

Austin   May 27th, 2009 4:49 pm ET

I like that Obama and Biden can have senses of humor about themselves. I think they recognize they're serious men in serious positions, but that doesn't mean you can't show a little humility sometimes with some self-deprecating humor. This isn't a gaffe. It's just good, clean fun. I like it.

strong   May 27th, 2009 4:49 pm ET

See, Barack cannot operate without a telepromter. He is not a great orator, anyone can read off a cue card.

Even Biden, of all people, admits to this.

Simmy   May 27th, 2009 4:48 pm ET

I totally agree with all of the positive remarks....The usual negative party poopers can go back to FOXES and Limby......They sound so out of touch and out of place.......

President Obama uses a teleprompter to be precise and stay on message.....The words on the teleprompter are written by him.....I don't get the obsession with it.......I don't get the mentality of the GOP......Got their butts kicked because of negativity, and still feel good about continuing their negativity......I don't get it - but I like it.......2010 – 2012 here we come.......

Doug, New Jersey   May 27th, 2009 4:48 pm ET

You call a man who is (based on His resume) obviously educated, smart, intelligent, moderate, kind hearted and family oriented a less than intelligent person. This is a FREE country the last time I read the Constitution. You blog as if this is 1969 and all African Americans and minorities still are required to drink at separate water fountains and sit at the back of buses.

Fan of Common Sense   May 27th, 2009 4:46 pm ET

When a president is not even coherent enough to speak off-the-cuff to even informal parties and gatherings at the White House without reading a script, there's something wrong. Like the time a few months ago when Obama actually thanked HIMSELF because someone put up the wrong speech. (If Bush had done something that hair-brained, it would have been the ONLY story in the media for a week.)

This maybe a little humorous, but Obama's excessive reliance on speech writers and telepromptors is indicative of a lack of original thought and a low-level of intelligence......presidential qualities I don't find very amusing.

THIS PRESIDENT IS A LYING MOOLY.........

Joyce Becker   May 27th, 2009 4:41 pm ET

I just love Joe Biden's comment and gaffes, of course he doesn't have to watch what he says as carefully as the President. I am sure that the President could make an excellent speech without a teleprompter, but of course he can't afford to take that chance, every word he says is so carefully parsed for double meanings, why should he look for trouble. We haven't had a president make as good speeches as he does, so I feel that the teleprompter is better for him than just printed notes.

Lisa   May 27th, 2009 4:40 pm ET

A clear case of a Freudian slip. Sounds like Joe is a little jealous and feeling insignificant at being number 2. I like Joe but this is precisely why he never made a significant run at the presidency. To many slip ups and not enough substance. Don't get me wrong I like Biden but Obama is President for a good reason he was the best man for the job. And for all you Obama haters take a look in the mirror. Obama had written books prior to his run at Presidency so anyone who had read an excerpt would know that he is an excellent writer. Jealous.

Grrrr-awful-o   May 27th, 2009 4:40 pm ET

Biden has ZERO respect for Obama. That's the one right thing he's done.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   May 27th, 2009 4:39 pm ET

Kevin Denver Colorado "If this president didn't have to watch every little word he says he wouldn't have to rely on a teleprompter. His will be the most scrutinized presidency ever."

Did you complain when the over the top coverage of his campaign by the highly biased liberal media helped get him elected? He sought the limelight, now he's got it, warts and all. Wish someone would have given Bush a telepromter, or maybe they did and he still said the crazy things he did.

Obama is a man who puts thought and plan in everything because he knows the vultures are circling.

GOP are tired of having to complain about the tiniest errors so they harp on the tprompter thing...saying ""Maybe he'll make more mistakes if he'd give up the teleprompter...we need him to fail...so our point will be made,"
they want him to make mistakes--thats what the teleprompter thing is about.

I don't care if the president uses a teleprompter or he reads it from a cocktail napkin or someone whispers his speech into his ear. It's what he says that should be important, not how he says it.

Let's face it, at least President Obama is smart enough to think and speak without using such word blunders as "Umm" unlike the former president before him who couldn't even speak in a complete sentence that made any sense.

Why didn't the Republicans talk about this when Bush was President.

MBSeattle   May 27th, 2009 4:29 pm ET

Do Americans want their President spending his time preparing to give speeches? The teleprompter is a time managment tool. American do seem to want to hear from their President as much as possible especially in such challenging financial times with two wars underway.
