Biden takes dig at Obama over teleprompter use

(CNN) - Joe Biden couldn't help but take a dig at his boss Wednesday when one of the vice president's teleprompter screens fell down during his commencement speech at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

"What am I gonna tell the president?" Biden said as a gust of wind knocked down his left teleprompter. "I'm gonna tell him his teleprompter is broken. What will he do then?"

The off-handed quip immediately drew laughter and some the loudest cheers of day from the graduates.

Obama has long been criticized from Republicans for at times appearing over reliant on a teleprompter, even during short and informal speeches. During the White House Correspondents Association dinner earlier this month, the president himself poked fun at his penchant for using a teleprompter.

"You know I had an entire speech prepared for this wonderful occasion, but now that I am here, I am going to try something a little different - I am going to speak from the heart," Obama said jokingly as his teleprompter rose from the floor.

    @ Marie in California:

Guess you've never seen an interview with Obama. No teleprompters there, and some of the most thoughtful, intelligent answers you'll ever hear.

I respectfully submit that your world seems sufficiently bizarro, and given your tone I'm not sure you're capable of morality at all. Sheeesh.

Take away the script and Obama falls apart with innumerable "uhs". His OCD emphasis on "staying on message" is more characteristic of an advertiser than a leader.

If the president is really smart and sincere, he won't use teleprompter, instead speak out of his own brain and heart. Or is he all America can have from more than 300 millions people?

all you people making fun of President because he uses the teleprompter are a joke. You idiots don't have an ounce of intellengence that the President has so why in the hell are you even trying to make fun of him. He is way more educated then you clowns and very well spoken.

Do Americans want their President spending his time preparing to give speeches? The teleprompter is a time managment tool. American do seem to want to hear from their President as much as possible especially in such challenging financial times with two wars underway.

Biden may find himself in the Jersey River if he keeps this up. The unions may go after him. Obamacorn will scold him and put the muzzle on him. For the sheep that brought up Republicans in your comments, you need to wake up and ask yourself who is going to repay the $11 trillion deficit.

We need a V.P. who has a Good sense of Humor.

We don't need a V.P. who is a Quail Hunter (Cheney) or Helicopter Wolf Hunter (Palin) 😛

I'd like to know what the difference is between a bunch of notes on paper or a teleprompter. All speakers use notes. So what is the big deal ?
Just another thing that republicans try to use to make fun of our president. Kevin in Denver, Colorado is right.

Maybe Joe should use the teleprompter more to stay on message. It is all that top of head spontaneity that has kept Biden's foot in his mouth. Joe we love you anyway.

Let's face it, at least President Obama is smart enough to think and speak without using such word blunders as "Umm" unlike the former president before him who couldn't even speak in a complete sentence that made any sense.

Why didn't the Republicans talk about this when Bush was President.

President Obama is just a very disciplined man who never leaves anything to chance. That's the way I like him. And what is wrong with having a teleprompter ? Many on this blog are so inarticulate in writing I would cringe to hear them speak !

I'd rather milk that BULL. LOL or his ugly wife.

Teleprompter is just notes on a screen. What is the difference, everyone has notes that they read from. Those of you that thinks there is a difference between Obama using notes on screen vs others notes on paper is crazy. At lease Obama is keeping up with techonology

I guess with Obama it is ok. If if was Bush using the TELEPROMTER, so much and so often, he will be called stupid over and over again.
I guess that's life-some are called stupid for everything even if they are not and others are never called dummies even if they are.

Ha! So now that we have an eloquent President again the right is attacking his speaking ability??? Did you miss the last 8 years of GWB??? Republicans are truly the party of Double Speak... if they can even manage that!

Bush didn't use a teleprompter, and just look at what informative, eloquent, and thought-provoking speeches he gave!

I don't care if the president uses a teleprompter or he reads it from a cocktail napkin or someone whispers his speech into his ear. It's what he says that should be important, not how he says it.
