Judge Sonia Sotomayor would be the first Hispanic U.S. Supreme Court justice if confirmed.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The Republican Party risks further alienation from Hispanics by challenging the nomination of Sonia Sotomayer, who would become the first Hispanic, and third woman, on the Supreme Court.

On Tuesday, President Obama nominated 54-year-old Sotomayor - who is of Puerto Rican descent - to replace the retiring Justice David Souter.

Sotomayer is a judge on the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, named to that post by President Bill Clinton when she was a U.S. District Court judge, nominated by President George H.W. Bush in 1992.

The barbed comments about Sotomayer began almost as soon as the announcement was made at the White House on Tuesday.

Conservative radio personality Rush Limbaugh called Sotomayor a "reverse racist" on his show. Limbaugh, who is known for stirring up controversy, said he hopes Obama's nominee fails.

"Do I want her to fail? Yeah. Do I want her to fail to get on the court? Yes. She'd be a disaster on the court," he said. "Do I still want to Obama to fail as president? Yeah. ... He's going to fail anyway, but the sooner the better here so that as little damage can be done to the country."

Republicans think it is wrong to have the Feds involved in the Auto Industry, the Banking Industry, and Wall Street. They say Goverment is too big. But they are ready for a Constitutional amendment to ban Gay Marraige, or interfere in a persons right to die (Terri Shaivo). They can't have it both ways. That is why we have a 10th Amendment and States Rights.

So if you round your statistics, RealityKing, that's pretty much how the Court is made up. We have 1 black, if Sotomayor is confirmed we'll have 1 Hispanic, and 7 whites. If we replace one of the white justices with an "other," which may very well happen some day, then we'll be right on as far as representing a cross section of American ethno-racial demographics.

God's richest blessings on Judge Sotomayor.

Lucifer Limbaugh will not get his wish for failure with his hate speech.

    God bless our country.

God forgive the idiots in our country. God forgive the supporters of the hatemongers in the world.

What is a "reverse racist" any Rush? Someone who stands up for EQUALITY under the law, something you apparently forgot to remember about after you read the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.

The racist, overweight, drug addicted, cowardly, uneducated Rush Limbaugh calling some a reverse racist. What a joke! No wonder he is the leader of the RepubliCONs.

can someone for the love of life please shut Rush Limbaugh up?
i am tired of hearing him rant about how he wants everyone to fail.
know what RUSH – i want you to fail and fall over a steep cliff....
we need solutions and cooperation, not your whining and criticisms...but that apparently is indicative of exactly how little you have to contribute to any intelligent discussion

I guess calling the nominee and the President of the United States "racists" is walking a fine line. But the junior high bully approach seems to be the only strategy they have.

Why have such large number of conservatives decided that the wildest, most totally absurb exaggerations are "the truth"? I think we should call them "Kazinski Republicans."

Could the Republicans be doing a better job of alienating themselves from reasonable people? Is it possible for them to lose more support and credibility?

Out of 110 justices in the history of the Supreme Court, two have been African American and two have been female. The other 106 justices have all been WHITE MALES.

    End of story–get over yourselves.

She was only chosen because she is a woman and hispanic. Obama and the Democrats said from day one the candidate should be a woman, and it would be good if she was hispanic. (After they told us the candidates race and gender "Didn't matter.) If a candidate were chosen because they were white and male, there would be charges of discrimination. I hope the Republicans can find a way to block her confirmation, because I am not happy with this candidate, because she was chosen in this manner.
