Meg Whitman has won the endorsement of Sen. John McCain.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, will endorse former eBay executive Meg Whitman Friday for governor of California, a Whitman spokesman said.

Although Whitman hasn't officially announced her candidacy, McCain will endorse the Republican at a town hall meeting in Orange County and then join her in Fresno for a news conference. Whitman's spokesman Mitch Zak said that McCain's support "continues the campaign's momentum."

"John McCain is an American hero," Zak said of the 2008 Republican presidential nominee. "We're honored and humbled to have his endorsement. We're looking forward to working with him to improve California."

Whitman served as national co-chair of McCain's presidential campaign. She received another endorsement Thursday when House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Virginia, announced that he was backing her.

"The state needs a leader with a creative vision, with a formula for success that can address the fiscal challenges that you face and there is no one better than Meg Whitman," Cantor said in a statement posted on Whitman's web site. "I'm very honored to be part of her team."

Republicans former Rep. Tom Campbell and California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner have officially announced their intentions to run for governor of California in 2010.

For Californians, it's all about the economy right now.

If she ran the Californian economy half as well as she ran ebay, we're lucky to have her.

Gosh....she looks like a Morlock.

McCain go to one of your 8 homes and enjoy your old worn self **GOV Arnold Schwarzenegger endorsed you and campaigned with Palin and bashed President Obama (skinny legs ...He need to do some squats) Payback Arnold

Greg, San Francisco, CA   May 28th, 2009 9:22 pm ET

McCain's endorsement will do little to erase the fact that she is totally unqualified for the role. EBay has tanked, largely because of poor decision making by the Megster. Her support is non existent and her fund raising has consisted almost solely of writing personal checks to her campaign. She has little chance of winning the Republican nomination much less the Governorship.

Ruty   May 28th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

Meg, you better stay away from McCain–he's a loser.

Michele   May 28th, 2009 9:08 pm ET

Had his brilliant staff chosen Whitman to run with McCain, he might now be in the White House. Guess she was too smart for them.

And teleprompter, guess what? BUSH's war was totally financed by China...Bush never asked for one sacrifice from Americans....the first war in our history for that to happen.
Obama did not get us into this mess, and yes, it will cost a lot to right the ship. Remember, we were asked to 'go shopping" after 9-11, keep driving up those credit card debts, keep buying more than we could afford. None of that was caused by Obama...and he did not vote for the war either. So blame the messenger, but try to remember that while Bush was not keeping us safe, he was also not doing any good to the economy either. This is the same guy who couldn't run an oil field or a baseball team, but the Supreme Court thought he could run the country (into the ground.)

Beverly from NC   May 28th, 2009 8:59 pm ET

Well that is one endorsement I would definitely NOT want if I were her. McCain was the one who thought Sarah Palin was qualified to be Vice President and she was the stupidest choice for a VP in American history. Unqualifiied, uneducated, racist, extremist religious nut, and convicted for corruption as Gov of Alaska -- oh yea – McCain has great judgment capabilities–I'd be running from that endorsement!!

Chris   May 28th, 2009 8:50 pm ET

Dear John McCain,

Why are you still in the Republican Party? You are not helping us, and now, with your endorsement, you've all but doomed Meg Whitman's political future.

Why don't you go be with your friend Arland, let us real Republicans pick who we want.

Tim   May 28th, 2009 8:49 pm ET

Gosh the comments on this Forum are so mean-spirited! Before proceeding, I am an independent, minority voter. John McCain is a man of integrity, and Barrack Obama is a man who will go down as a positively historic figure. O.K. those are my positive comments...

I do not agree with all the policies of McCain, and almost none of the policies of Obama. You can respect a person without agreeing on the approach to a problem.

Argonaut   May 28th, 2009 8:41 pm ET

Whitman. IPO stocks. Done. How about someone worth a normal amount of money who hasn't fiddled with their fancy stock portfolios? Not some movie star. Not a big exec. Oh wait. GOP. Money. Done.

The left wing liberal nut jobs and right wing ultra-conservative freaks are exactly what is wrong with this country. Can't any of you come to the middle with a little common sense and see that neither side is 100% right? That's why I left the Democrats, yet would never consider the Republicans as a viable option either. Stop demonizing each other and work together..and I mean YOU, the regular citizen, since the politicians will never do it.

andrea/ca   May 28th, 2009 8:16 pm ET

No thanks. No way. No, No , No this women already said on CNN she would fire 30k people working for the state. She would not have a problem with that. This state is in soooo much trouble, I have never seen it this bad. I don't think her ideas are the solution. Oh yeah she is a republican, they have no new ideas.

Cali J   May 28th, 2009 8:07 pm ET

Maybe it's time we start to put successful business people in these positions. It shouldn't matter Dem or Repub. Who can do the best job of financially running our state? I wish we had better business minds in Washington running our country. It's sad when we put political ideology and parties before our own good. Then we try to find ways to defend their failures. Arnold says he's Repub, but works with all Dems. California's a huge failure when it comes to fiscal responsibility. This state was once the 8th largest economy in the world. A congress full of Dems, and a Repub Gov has managed to destroy this once great state. Can we get beyond politics and start electing people who have the desire and capabilities to successfully run our government?

Olive   May 28th, 2009 8:05 pm ET

"McCain's support continues the campaign's momentum"– Zak must mean McCain will be buying Whitman's wardrobe (or is the RNC donating Sarah Palin's to her)?

"Whitman served as national co-chair of McCain's presidential campaign"...well - how did that work-out for you McCain?

"John McCain is an American hero" - NOT!!!!

Again, his judgement is showing; just like trying to hand Americans Sarah Palin!

You are sooooo pathetic.

Betty Phillips   May 28th, 2009 7:52 pm ET

My God, when will the "empty Headers" learn that it is so stupid of them to continue to bad mouth McCain, He may not have won the presidency, but, he did run a clean campaign, and he did darn good and that was all done without ACORNS help. McCain will always be an American Hero and a very honest Man. He could be referred to as HONEST MAC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Betty

This woman will not be the next governer of California. Californian's elected Arnold (I did not vote for him). He has turned out to be incompetent and that is the only reason California is financially destitute. He had no business running for governor, but his big ego just couldn't help itself and superficial Californian's got what they derserved by electing a Hollywood figure instead of a leader. This Meg Whitman is another one – what does she know about running a government – nothing.

joe smith   May 28th, 2009 7:26 pm ET

Who wants her to be governor of anything? The woman is a parasite. She wants to be president, now that Hillary has trail blazed her way to the top of the list. I don't think the first woman president should be selfish or greedy–that leaves Meg out. In case she didn't notice, McCain lost. His opinion doesn't mean very much.

This woman is a fraud and I will NEVER vote for her.

Terry   May 28th, 2009 6:55 pm ET

What could this gal's platform be? How about free market economics, lower taxes on the rich, deregulation of corporations, smaller government (fewer health inspectors, fewer police, fewer firemen, fewer restaurant inspectors, fewer product inspectors, opposition to unions (the problems with our economy, of course, are caused by the too high wages of American workers), gutting of social welfare programs, no pensions for public workers, a crumbing infrastructure, the export of American factories, porous borders, lots of illegal immigration, and the outsourcing of American jobs?

All we need is another CEO type in government. We need to get rid of CEO types in business!

@Truthhurts

The truth does hurt. Unfortunately, you don't know what the truth is. The economy was in a recession when Bush took office as well. It just wasn't as bad as this one. The economy had some record breaking quarters under the Bush administration. It wasn't until the Democrats took over in 2006 that the economy started turning negative again. The housing market collapsed as a result of Democrat policies, headed by Dodd and Schumer, who made some comments to the press which caused panic and bank closings. However, since the Democrats have most of the media in their pockets, those things have been forgotten. I'll even be real surprised if this comment is even posted.

She should be judged on her own merits and, what I have heard from her so far, lead me to the conclusion that she lacks regard for Californians. Her strategy is the same failed one used at the federal level for 8 years.

Is Whitman going to auction her run for Gov off to the highest bidder? I'm not sure what makes McCain or Cantor think they understand the needs of California or that Californian's are interested in Whitman or them. McCain is the guy who will forever be remembered for "the fundamentals of the economy are good" on the day it tanked. At a time when California was already in the tank. And Eric Cantor from Virginia has zero to offer Californian's so it's pointless he give his support....unless he is going to the highest bidder at the auction.

Unfortunately in this Bluer than blue state no republican stands a chance. A Democrat will win and screw this state up worse than it already is. Yeah, I know you Dems want to blame the so called Republican Arnold, Nice try, but the fact is years of Democratic controlled over spending on every entitlement program are what got us into this mess. To this day they refuse to deal with the real issues. They need to eliminate the free school lunch programs and benefits to illegal aliens, only to name a few. Arnold took over from the lousy Gov. Gray Davis and was good for awhile, but he never got control of the Dems over spending habits, he gave in to them and went along with wanting to raise our taxes sky high. The next Dem in office will do just that, raise them some more.

California needs to wake up and quit voting for Democrats.

California has only had 2 Democratic governors since 1967, and one of them was recalled.

Republicans are not inherently bad, and I'd rather a CA Republican over Gray Davis any day.

Since 1967, there have only been 2 Democratic Governors in California: The aforementioned Gray Davis, and Jerry Brown. California went through a lit of positive changes over the past 42 years under Republican governors.

I blame the state's current woes NOT on Arnold, but on trickle down from the crimes of the Bysh Administration.

Given how badly John McCain did in California last year, his endorsement might just be the kiss of death, particularly in the general election.

In the primary, she'll have to cater to the conservative crowd who doesn't trust McCain at all while the independent voters in the general election think he's clueless. I would be very surprised if he was much of a help.
