WASHINGTON (CNN) - Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, will endorse former eBay executive Meg Whitman Friday for governor of California, a Whitman spokesman said.
Although Whitman hasn't officially announced her candidacy, McCain will endorse the Republican at a town hall meeting in Orange County and then join her in Fresno for a news conference. Whitman's spokesman Mitch Zak said that McCain's support "continues the campaign's momentum."
"John McCain is an American hero," Zak said of the 2008 Republican presidential nominee. "We're honored and humbled to have his endorsement. We're looking forward to working with him to improve California."
Whitman served as national co-chair of McCain's presidential campaign. She received another endorsement Thursday when House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Virginia, announced that he was backing her.
"The state needs a leader with a creative vision, with a formula for success that can address the fiscal challenges that you face and there is no one better than Meg Whitman," Cantor said in a statement posted on Whitman's web site. "I'm very honored to be part of her team."
Republicans former Rep. Tom Campbell and California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner have officially announced their intentions to run for governor of California in 2010.

More uber-rich Repugs getting into politics. She must see some money there she hadn't snapped up yet.
Great! let her run. maybe she can do to Calf. what she did for E_bay. You Know raise fees, drive sellers away by the millions. Right on. Just what Calf. needs.
Big whoop!!! I am sure getting the endorsment from the grand poop shoverler of the grumpy old party will carry a lot of weight in a state that dropped kicked his grumpy old butt back to the Senate and away from the Whitehouse...
Is Whitman going to auction her run for Gov off to the highest bidder? I'm not sure what makes McCain or Cantor think they understand the needs of California or that Californian's are interested in Whitman or them. McCain is the guy who will forever be remembered for "the fundamentals of the economy are good" on the day it tanked. At a time when California was already in the tank. And Eric Cantor from Virginia has zero to offer Californian's so it's pointless he give his support....unless he is going to the highest bidder at the auction.
I thought all republican women running for office had to be "hot"!
And I was seriously willing to consider her, maybe even vote for her.

Man...I love your name....because I think like you, reading is stupid! Us republicans need to stick together.
Hey, I'm having a party tonight. We're gonna sit around and accomplish nothing, ruin stuff, and then complain about it in the morning. Wanna come? We'll be in the woods, we're easy to spot, we're the one's in the white hoods.
well that is the kiss of death that mccain just gave her.
He's the one that trotted out Palin!! Not a good judge of people, I'd say. They failed miserably.
Last thing we need is a another Republican governor, we have had enough incompetence in this state allready. I am sure she would be great at lining the pockets of the wealthy, which is all they are good for.
McCain will support the devil if it helped him. He only represents John McCain. California's problems are two years ahead of the same US problems. Attn: Liberals......keep spending and the country will go down the tubes. We'll have 10% interest rates by the end of 2010. Good luck buying a home in CA.
McCain is a senator from Arizona....his words mean nothing here.
She should be judged on her own merits and, what I have heard from her so far, lead me to the conclusion that she lacks regard for Californians. Her strategy is the same failed one used at the federal level for 8 years.
If was was a republican candidate, I would run as fast as I could from that oppurtunistic turn-coat politician.
McCain just thinks shes cute and has a chance for a chance encounter.
whatever... next candidate please. all republicans seem to be on crooked old rich white men payroll... and they've drove this great country into the pits. time for a nice democrat to step forward.
Who cares. Vote for Gavin Newsome.
CNN- Do you think we type big long blogs only to have you delete them?
I guess we can look forward to more hate rallies and by the way John – will Meghan, Cindy and Sarah be joining you as well? Try it and see how fast the people in CA throw you out of here.
@Truthhurts
The truth does hurt. Unfortunately, you don't know what the truth is. The economy was in a recession when Bush took office as well. It just wasn't as bad as this one. The economy had some record breaking quarters under the Bush administration. It wasn't until the Democrats took over in 2006 that the economy started turning negative again. The housing market collapsed as a result of Democrat policies, headed by Dodd and Schumer, who made some comments to the press which caused panic and bank closings. However, since the Democrats have most of the media in their pockets, those things have been forgotten. I'll even be real surprised if this comment is even posted.
Please Say It Ain't So Joe!!!!!!!!!!
You Betcha She Won't Win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll Be BACK!!!!

I was going to take the chance to post on how unattractive she is ...."

Truly displaying what a classy individual you are.
Meg's old money conservative. I think she's just what Californica needs, but they won't like it. The most conspicuous and unbridled consumers on the planet will experience copious amounts of personal financial flatulence when their unapologetic political apathy at the polls delivers into their midst a real conservative manager not inclined to favor moguls and superstars, or Kennedys.
Mclame is no hero! He was shot down in Vietnam and did no more fighting. Basically he sat out most of the war. Not a hero
Please...We Californians(or as Arnold would say-Calliforna) are in a world of hurt.Taxes raised again & again-gas going up again ($2.69) last time I checked. We need someone to get tough with the legislature& start talking about the "elephant in the room" -illegal immigration. I'm turning off my computer now before all the hate mail.
Wow are Democrats filled with a lot of hate. Typical quote: "Go back to listening to that drug-addled clown Limbaugh and Dick 'dead aim" Cheney."
Ummm, that is hate and that is anger. You should recognize within yourselves how much vitriol and venom comes from your posts. They are every bit as hateful as you say Republicans are. Maybe you can use the term "rethugs" again.
Do you not see the hate you are espousing in your own postings?
Well that's the kiss of death if there ever was one......
