Democratic Sen. Carl Levin is challenging former Vice President Cheney's recent claims about the effectiveness of the Bush administration's use of harsh interrorgation techniques.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, says former Vice President Dick Cheney's claims - that classified CIA memos show enhanced interrogation techniques like waterboarding worked - are wrong.

Levin, speaking at the Foreign Policy Association's annual dinner on Wednesday, said an investigation by his committee into detainee abuse charges over the use of the techniques - now deemed torture by the Obama administration - "gives the lie to Mr. Cheney's claims."

The Michigan Democrat told the crowd that the two CIA documents that Cheney wants released "say nothing about numbers of lives saved, nor do the documents connect acquisition of valuable intelligence to the use of abusive techniques."

"I hope that the documents are declassified, so that people can judge for themselves what is fact, and what is fiction," he added.

@Robin: "Easy way to solve this…

Show the documents. Release them all.

Obama can use that time to show his birth certificate too. Not that I care, but the fact that the man is going to spend over a million dollars to keep his birth certificate sealed peaks my interest."

First of all, I can't believe extremists like you are still beating the birth certificate dead horse. Obama DID release his birth certificate, posted it on his web site, and it has been viewed and verified. STOP THE LIES.

Second, did you or anyone else read the entire story? The documents CANNOT BE DECLASSIFIED yet due to two ongoing lawsuits. It's the last paragraph of the story. Go look for it. You can't miss it.

Everyone needs to watch the movie Taxi to the Dark Side. You'll notice two things: one, how criminal Cheney and Rummy are; two, how honorable McCain is. It's also an interesting thing to hear from hte very soldiers who were given the job of "soliciting information" from prisoners. The soldiers were tried in court while the policy makers got off free.

Please, we need the FACTS before we make a judgement!

Hmmm... this whole turtore thing is a waste of time! As a country we should be looking forward and not backwards, seeking revenge or to teach "someone" a lesson

Sure is good to have a little more documentary evidence that shows what we've always known: the ex-VP is a fear-mongering liar.

Levin and the Democrats (both MI senators, MI governor, Detroit Mayor, etc.) should be proud that their state has the highest unemployment, the worst schools, the highest dropout and teen pregnancy rates, and the worst economy of any state. Oh yeah, and the former Mayor ( a Democrat) is in jail. Nice deflection.

Judy   May 29th, 2009 1:50 pm ET

Do we really need to see a document to know that Dick Cheney is a liar?

Eric   May 29th, 2009 1:50 pm ET

To those of you wondering why Obama is not releasing the memos, here's why. They would show clearly the lies and deceptions coming from Cheney and others. The population would force a complete investigation and those criminals would be charged. Obama is doing his best to avoid it. You might disagree with him, but he thinks that with all the problems right now, there is no looking back and no time to waste on criminals who are out of power anyway.

I find it truly hypocritical that some are asking Levin to provide proof or he's the liar. How come Cheney isn't/wasn't held to the same standard – ever?

Simpliticus   May 29th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

Makes one wonder what Cheney's motives are for addressing these issues of torture now! It would seem that Cheney would need both a strong stomach and a good heart to deal with the matters so raised by his talking of late! I would suspect that Levin is correct nad that Cheney has been doing a great deal of being a contrarian about his deeds or misdeeds in the Bush administration. Even Bush isn't saying very much about the exploits of his administration other than saying the safe things like we saved lives! Sounds an awful lot like watching too many Tom Cruise movies!

Did the people posting on here, those that are demanding the documents get released and burying Levin, read the article or just the headline? Levin was quoted as saying he hoped they get released so that people can judge for themselves. The CIA won't release them because they are part of a lawsuit. Seems like a reasonable explanation to me. After throughly reading this article, I suggest people read studies on torture techniques. They yield innacurate information and are widely considered inhumane. ManCow proved that yesterday. Now its Hannity's turn...Gov. Ventura, please get your waterboard ready!

He is still one of the mouthpieces of the Republican party and republicans don't see anything wrong with this? This is an ex-vice president. Give America a break. We all know the lies we were told all along. Some of us knew they were lies as we were hearing them. Why would he stop lying now when he and his administration are in trouble for torturing and decieving the world and the American public. Next up Liz Cheney and her my fathers no criminal campaign.

AJ   May 29th, 2009 1:48 pm ET

Everyone knows that Cheney is a liar, why is this news? Dick and G.W. were allowed to lie to the American people for years, systematically chipping away at the civil liberties that this nation was founded upon, and no one seemed to care. Why all the sudden interest??

The only traitors to their country here are the ones that went to war under false pretenses. You know, like that Iraq was linked to the folks who DID attack us. My guess is that includes you. Why don't you step up to the firing squad tough-guy. Otherwise, do us a favor and shut-up!

Levin mentions only two documents, why should we believe him at all, I am sure there are several other documents that may support Cheney's claim but those won't be released either.

John   May 29th, 2009 1:46 pm ET

As was revealed over this past weekend, Cheney was part of the team that developed a directive classifying these memos. He knew, firsthand, they couldn't be de-classified, because he had been part of the process to classify them. Then, he conveniently ignored what he knew, to publicly call for their de-classification, knowing full well it couldn't be done, thanks to his own actions, while in office.

Crafty? Cynical? Nope. Cheney.

EDC   May 29th, 2009 1:46 pm ET

To Pierre Changstien: So you don't believe in our laws, you don't believe in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Is that correct? Because if you do then you will know that inhumane treatment of any prisoner of war (or enemy combatant as the idiotic republicans want to call them) is against the Geneva Convention of which the United States is a signator. It doesn't matter that it was ONLY used on 3 El Qaeda members. The United States NOT using torture is what has in the past set us apart from other nations. No more though thanks to people who think just like you.

Make no mistake - waterboarding is torture. The United States deemed it so quite a long time ago. We don't just throw out our laws, morals and values because we were attacked. We did the same knee-jerk reactionary crap during WWII when we rounded up and interred every Japanese-American living here. That was wrong and we knew it then and we know it now. Waterboarding is torture, it is wrong, it is immoral and it goes against everything that every soldier who has ever fought for our country knows. You, Mr. Changstien, are a coward and a traitor.

How about this, " a man and his croonies stole and election and compromised the soul of a nation through lies and greed"

Hop Capitol   May 29th, 2009 1:44 pm ET

Three? Not so, the CIA has admitted that over fifty prisoners died due to "enhanced interrogation"during the Bush Administration. And yeah, Dick Cheney is a proven liar and a war profiteer who holds no elective office. Who cares what he has to say?

kevin C   May 29th, 2009 1:44 pm ET

The Democrats need to stop doing this piece meal. It is slow, awkward and solves nothing. We need an independent investigation, that is done as quickly as possible.

Water boarding is just the tip of the ice berg, far worse things were done and with the full knowledge of Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld. Sodomizing, Rape and Electrocution are the reasons Obama won't release the photos and that is wrong, we need to condemn these actions and the leaders who justified them.

We need a real investigation, see what the results are then go from there.

single mom   May 29th, 2009 1:44 pm ET

This politician said that. That politician said this.
They're politicians! Do you really think either of them, any of them, are being truthful?

Facts – 3, count'em – 1,2,3 – 'detainees' were waterboarded.
The Pentagon said this week that they have conclusive proof that two dozen 'detainees' who were released went straight back to Al Qaeda and they have circumstantial evidence for 70 more. In simple term – these people are not our friends. They want to attack this country.
I doubt that those at Gitmo have any up-to-date knowledge of efforts to attack the United States and our allies, however, I think it would be the height of stupidity to simply release them. And to bring them onto American soil, no matter what type of prison, well, I think anyone who seriously thinks that's a good idea, go to the nearest insane asylum and turn yourself in.

RN in Ann Arbor   May 29th, 2009 1:44 pm ET

The CIA & courts – not Obama and not Levin – have the authority to release the documents.
Why assume that Levin is lying? I have never known him to have that reputation.
Why assume Chaney is lying? Well, okay, HE does have that reputation.

The burden of proof should rest on Cheney, since his was the first claim that torture was used to save lives.
Are we not a better nation than those nations that use torture? Have we decided to abandon our moral authority so fast and sink to the level of our enemies? For those conservative Christians who would claim this is okay – I just want to know: Who would Jesus torture? Why does anyone think this is acceptable?

Andrew   May 29th, 2009 1:44 pm ET

One easy way to figure this all out. Let the memos be released. It is not Bush or Cheney not releasing them. It is cnn's most precious deity Obama who is not releasing them. If what Cheney is saying is not true just release the memos and shut him up forever.

Why wont they release them? What happened to transparency?

Stop drinking the Kool Aid folks! Start thinking. I know its hard but I think you guys can do it.

Eric   May 29th, 2009 1:44 pm ET

Well, tough choice. A respected Senator or a pathological liar who killed thousands of Americans in a wrong war.

Jimbo   May 29th, 2009 1:43 pm ET

Experts agree that torture is ineffective in part because the subject will say whatever the torturer wants to hear in order to stop the pain. All of the useful information to prevent terrorist attacks was obtained prior to torture being applied. But Cheney didn't apply the torture to obtain useful information. He did it to extract lies implying a connection between Al Quaeda and Iraq, and any other lie that could be used to justify the war. In that respect the torture did work.

CJ   May 29th, 2009 1:43 pm ET

What everyone in this country should be focused on is the abuse of power during the Bush/Cheney administration. No one in this country should be above the law, and if we allow those in power or those with wealth to be above the law, then we are no different than those in the very country which was invaded. I once had so much pride in this nation, but it saddens me to see to what level it has stooped. Cheney, Limbaugh, Gingrich, et. al. need a strong reality check.

The General   May 29th, 2009 1:43 pm ET

They all lie, have their versions of the truth, etc. Democrats and republicans. Try having a mind of your own for once instead of strictly following party lines or does the DNC have to give you the OK to think for yourself first? Oh I forgot, that would make you a republican and defeat their purpose.

Cheney couldn't tell the truth if his life depended on it.

JerryAW   May 29th, 2009 1:39 pm ET

@lynn in NM
So let me get this straight. When Bush-Cheney decided to break the law, it was the fault of Pelosi, Levin, and others for not stopping them? Anything any Dem did at that time to try to stop them would have been (and maybe even was) overruled. Even if they did know anything they couldn't speak publicly because that information would have been highly classified at the time. Its a great ploy to transfer responsibility from the perpetrators to bystanders, but it won't work this time.
Regarding the former President Clinton, who you so snidely refer to as "Billy Jeff", the people who were responsible for the first WTC bombing are now securely incarcerated in US prisons; too bad we can't say the same for the person responsible for the 2nd WTC attack (Osama bin Laden), who was allowed to escape from the Tora Bora area of Afghanistan by Bush (a longtime friend of the bin Laden family). Just in case you were referring to the bombing of the USS Cole, that happened as Clinton was about to leave office, and it wasn't until later that any fault was assigned for that – too late for Clinton to act on it.

Kevin B.   May 29th, 2009 1:38 pm ET

Cheneys request to release the memo's was a bluff, now he is being called on his bluff. If these memos do not show "lives saved" then Mr Cheney and team should face charges for lying and torture. Plain and simple.

Robin, don't you read the newspapers, or the Internet, or coloring books or whatever? Obama's birth certificate has been released so many times by: the hospital he was born in; the state of Hawaii, the doctor that delivered him; his now deceased grandmother; various Honolulu papers. It's been released so many times it should be on the NYT best seller list. Of course I realize, per Michael Savage, and other right wing morons, that the state of Hawaii, the Hospital, the Honolulu papers, are all in collusion to lie to the American people. Are you one of those right wing morons? Sounds like it to me.

TO "VON BISMARK,Vienna."

The waterboarding at Gitmo was NOTHING like the waterboarding that other nations (Japan to name one) were condemned for. This was a few seconds of simulated drowning with a sanatized tube on the man who helped behead Daniel Pearl and plan 9/11. What you are comparing it to is Japan's waterboarding in WW2 which consisted of filing the persons intestines with water until they were bloated and it burst, which in turn killed them. It was done for the sake of it, not to save lives.

TG   May 29th, 2009 1:38 pm ET

Does it make it legal to torture if what you are doing is to save lives regardless if they were terrorists? What lives did they save with this intelligence? I am quite curious since OUR men and women are still fighting in a war that was suppose to be about 9/11 and losing their lives while Bin Laden who is responsible for 9/11 is still out there enjoying his. Oh... sorry.... that had to do with weapons of mass destrution didnt it? PLEASE!

SaintGenesius   May 29th, 2009 1:38 pm ET

Cheney truly believes what he is saying, but as Wilder said about Christ on the cross, "just because you are willing to die for something does not make it right." Cheney is wrong based on an absolute overwhelming amount of evidence.

Experts in these areas point out that torture does not work. People who were directly involved say the torture did not work. Generals have said it did not work. Not a shred of evidence that Cheney points to actually suggests any success from torture. Even the guys they were torturing were not high level al Queda members, as the administration had boasted.

Let's also remember, this is the same guy who was convinced that the Iraqi people would throw flowers at the feet of our troops. This is the guy who was convinced beyond any doubt that Saddam Hussein had WMDs. Cheney has never been right on any major issue –ever.

Aside from his sudden turn around where everything should be declassified after he made a career of saying just the opposite; it is clear they Cheney's primary objective is protecting his legacy, whatever that might wind up being.

Dick Cheney would be a war criminal in any other nation, why not this one?

You can all forget about a war crimes trial. That will all be swept under the rug now that Pelosi has implicated herself in knowing about the waterboarding in 2003. To every one saying, "Declassify, declassify, declassify," from bwhat I understand, those two specific memos are tied up in some sort of lawsuit and until that's resolves, the documents can't be released. I could be wrong, but that's my understanding.

Kevin B.   May 29th, 2009 1:37 pm ET

I always thought Cheneys request to release the memo's was a bluff, now he is being called on his bluff. If these memos do not show "lives saved" then Mr Cheney and team should face charges for lying and torture. Plain and simple.

Anyone foolish enough to defend torture deserves his fate.

John, Rochester MN   May 29th, 2009 1:37 pm ET

It's interesting that the righties on here keep talking about demanding proof, when there have been so many instances where proof that Bush and Cheney lied in the past has been shown. Apparently they're beyond reproach to these people. Why would you automatically assume that Levin is lying, other than the fact that he's a Democrat? And all this crap about Obama refusing to release the memos is ridiculous as well. It clearly states in the article that the documents cannot be declassified due to lawsuits. How does Obama figure into that exactly?
Well, it's not like the righties here are known for their fairness and truth, so I'm not sure why I'm even pointing these things out. *sigh*

Greg Smith, Clifton Heights PA   May 29th, 2009 1:37 pm ET

Dick Cheney is telling the truth. The Democrats are kings of lying, they need the power no matter what it costs.

anita   May 29th, 2009 1:37 pm ET

Carl Levin or Dick Cheney?
Belief in either would be unbelievably STUPID!

jason   May 29th, 2009 1:36 pm ET

Cheney's 'claims' are SOLEY his opinions, and extremenly warped ones at that...I really think he lives without a heart

Colonel TR   May 29th, 2009 1:36 pm ET

I see the DNC mindless little twerps who never had a set of gonads, have again crawled out of their little holes to yap about VP Cheney again. Free speech only pertains to them in their little perverted world. Why would ANY of you pissants think that putting the squeeze on terrorists who would slit your throat in a second is a problem? You are the ilk and bottom feeders of the country and should be spit on. If there is another terrorist attack in the US, may it be on your neighborhood.

echo   May 29th, 2009 1:36 pm ET

Oh so now the unelected GOP representatives want the Dems to endanger lives by declassifying documents? If they do, the GOP will turn around and accuse them of putting lives at risk. We are to smart to fall for this again ppl!

Steven L. Rowe   May 29th, 2009 1:36 pm ET

It is very simple. Release the documents.

How did the comment of Polar Bears Against Palen at 12:59 PM ET get in here? Isn't this monitored by CNN?

Independent in Virginia   May 29th, 2009 1:36 pm ET

Didn't the redacted memos that were released have that information? Why not just show what's under the redaction.

Either way, there's no way to quantify how many lives were saved. The only way to do something like that is after the fact, after lives are already lost.

Speaking of quantifying lives – Any statistics to prove how 150,000 jobs have been saved/added? When I see unemployment rates going up, who's winning?

Don   May 29th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

In this post the writer Ed Hornick calls Carl Levin the "Michigan Democrat senator..." This is code used by right wingers, where the word "democrat" is constantly and derisively substituted for the correct word that should be used in such context, which would be "democratic". Is Hornick writing commentary here from a right wing perspective, or is he just ignorant?

jm   May 29th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

Polar Bears for Palin,

You are the lowest of the low. Maybe you should wish for yourself what you wish for other people. :-) .

Bob of Lompoc   May 29th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

Cheney, the five deferment Chicken Hawk during the Vietnam War, who wanted others to handle the dirty work for him in Iraq, Gitmo and the basement of CIA Torture Central – he just wanted to look at the pictures – he lied ? I'm shocked to discover this. Shocked.

What?! A government official is lying?! Unheard of

itbeme   May 29th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

he needs to be charged with war crimes......

Sam Ellison   May 29th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

I can’t believe how the so-called “liberal” media is letting this guy get away with these distractions. Whether it works or not is irrelevant, it is torture, has been since the Spanish Inquisition, and is below the moral standard of America. To justify torture is to say America is filled with the same a-moral dogs as al Qaeda. If you want to make money, robbing a bank works. If you don’t like your neighbor, murder works. Effectiveness does not constitute morality.

nom deplume, esq.   May 29th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

It is an old Washington trick to say that a classified document says something, and to even call for its release (knowing it won't be released).

Cheney and Levin say different things about the same document. Both call for its release. Until it is, there is no rational basis to conclude which is lying. Unless, of course, your partisanship shapes your view.

Total War. Coming to an election near you.

Pluto   May 29th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

Matt M, Cheney's a DEMOCRAT now? They're defecting so fast I can't keep 'em straight. Yeah, Obama releasing classified documents for such a dumb reason is pretty unlikely.

brian   May 29th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

A lot of you people are just evil. So giving the go-ahead to the Navy to 'drop' three pirates to save ONE america is GOOD but using EIT NOT torture to garner information on more attacks against thousands and thousands of americans is BAD? Most of you have NO idea how to defend a nation.

@OBAMA SHRUGGED   May 29th, 2009 1:34 pm ET

I saw that same story on RUSH BOUNCY, MAKING THE STATEMENT THAT OBAMA IS PURPOSLY CLOSING DOWN CAR DEALERSHIP WHO ARE OWNED OR CONTRIBUTED TO THE REPUBLICAN PARTY! Idiot, that is because the only dealership being closed by a Democrat is that isthe only one owned. He is such an idiot why we even bother to repeat anything that comes out of that idiots mouth.
Regarding releasing the photos, does it really matter, it happend and those responsible should be prosecuted. We already have seen photos don't need more gory details. Bush admitted to authorizing the use of torture or should I be PC and say "alternative methods" Yeah just ask McCain about torture.

Big Ed   May 29th, 2009 1:34 pm ET

O.K, Cheney lied when he spoke, he lied when he wrote. This is nothing we do not already know. What bothers me is that there is no consequence for his actions. We teach our children not to lie, cheat and steal, yet when it is done by Mr. Cheney and others in that Administration (Remember the party of Family Values?), we do not prosecute them.

Crime DOES pay, i guess. And we wonder why we have the social ills we have.

Mitch   May 29th, 2009 1:34 pm ET

Cheney, a liar? Who would of guessed it? Thanks Senator. Sometimes it doesn't hurt to restate the obvious.

sammieb51   May 29th, 2009 1:34 pm ET

I am so surprised ... Dick Cheney lied! Who would have ever thought him capable of such? Pssst .... don't tell his "base".

Master of the Obvious   May 29th, 2009 1:34 pm ET

Cheney is a liar. And in other news, water is wet.

Subsunk   May 29th, 2009 1:34 pm ET

The commenters here are pretty irrational and uneducated. Wonder if any of them has ever had to make a big decision in their life. Cheney, a war criminal? Bush a Traitorous destroyer of the Country? It is to laugh.

If they are criminals, then the evidence would have been found by now. 8 yrs of CNN trying to lie thru their teeth about what really went on, or they would have found some evidence of a real crime here. If those two guys are guilty of crimes, then the Messiah as President is already guilty of impeachable offenses in lying about his plans for the economy, and taking over American car companies without due process and without justification. He makes Bush look like a competent rocket scientist by comparison. And making politics part of the US Government is the worst crime there is.

You folks are largely idiots with no reason in your body.

Subsunk

Sally   May 29th, 2009 1:33 pm ET

Cheney has a truly mean spirit...it is obvious. Torture suits his personality even if it doesn't work, but he'll continue to claim it does until the end of time with all the evidence to the contrary piled in front of him.

Dave   May 29th, 2009 1:33 pm ET

So release them. Release them all, it isn't like the Dems care one bit about national Security when they are willing to publicly humiliate are troops with photos and acusations.
By the way, explain how every CIA director and several of the interrogators all say it worked (except of course the one interrogator CNN used as an "expert" even though he spent less than a month as one and was only involved in one session).

donttreadonme   May 29th, 2009 1:33 pm ET

Instead of moving forward the pathetic liberals keep looking back to somehow shame the last Administration. Stateing that Bush policies damaged our reputation and national security, never considering the damage that they are doing to our Nation, reputation and national security with this side show political witch hunt.

I'm in Shock and Awe!

smokey   May 29th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

what are we waiting for ? Why isn't an investigation, and independent one where we can learn all the facts and the truth of who did what and when..this is far to important to ignore.. Some people should be held accountable and should face consequences..There was clearly a violation of our treaty and the will to cover it up..I might suggest since Cheney is so eager to talk openly on all the talk shows, then why not let him talk in front a investigative committee under oath..Then and only then will we finally get the truth !!

FrankB   May 29th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

For a guy who wouldn't comment on his energy policy sources, who was one of the most secretive people in the executive branch, who even said that he was not in the executive or legislative branch but between the two, he certainly has a lot of bull to say today. I say, "Good riddance to the guy!" He is one of the worst of the worst... And, no, I am not going hunting with him, although he came to my county in NY many times to do that and clogged up the roads...

To Pierre Changstien   May 29th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

@Pierre Changstien-
It doesn't matter whether it was 1 or 100. Once the world found us out we were tainted and scores and scores of terrorists have been and will be recruited just by pointing to what we did to those 3 guys.

Our beloved Country went from leading the way morally to becoming Nazi Germany, or Saddam's Iraq... and all of it happened just after 9/11 when we had the sympathies of almost the entire World... on our side.

Hope you're proud of what your party and the Bush administration did to our Country. Defending them is unconscionable. It also completely discredits any arguement you'd make in their defense.

Tris Stewart   May 29th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

So Cheney only waterboarded 3 al Qaeda detainees. And got valuable intelligence from them. And that those actions proved beneficial to the U.S.
Hmmmmm. So, if I robbed just 3 banks and gave all the money to charity to help feed the hungry, would you still prosecute me for bank robbery?
Anyone who thinks Cheney hasn't committed a crime doesn't understand the laws under which we live.

tells it like it is   May 29th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

Those screaming for Obama to release the docs, do you people not read the entire article?

"CIA spokesman Paul Gimigliano, in a written statement, said the two documents Cheney requested are the subject of two pending lawsuits seeking the release of documents related to the interrogation program, and cannot be declassified."

Typical republicans, read only what suits you, huh?

Therein lies he problem with so many in this country. Ideology clouds (pardon the pun) the ability to effectively process information.

All this uproar about reportedly only 3 guys being waterboarded, yet no big outcry at the killing of 3 Somali teenagers on a boat.

The difference?

Dick is a pathological liar. Remember the lies about "we will be greeted as liberators" in Iraq, the oil revenue will pay for the reconstruction of Iraq, proof of WMD is a slam dunk, there will be a "mushroom cloud" in Iraq if we don't invade, and "we are in the last throes" of the insurgency? All proven to be lies.

Bubba   May 29th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

Cheney is writing his memoirs and wants to use a lot of classified docs in his tell-all book. He knows there's no 'smoking gun' because he would have blabbed the gist of it to an unknown source and leaked it to the media: "We waterboarded x and he told us y" would have been enough to make his point, IF IT WERE TRUE.
But by now we know the truth isn't in him, and Cornyn says that since he's not an elected Republican he should shut his blinkin' pie hole. Pains me to agree with Cornyn about something, but when he's right, he's right, and also correct.

David   May 29th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

We should prosecute this sleeze ball and take Junior Bush down with him. Throw in the three R's [Rumsfield, Rove and Rice] while we're at it. Collectively, their administration was easily the worst [and most corrupt] in my life time.

They entered a war for all the wrong, misguided reasons and put our economy in the toilet in the process. The past 8 years speak for themselves. There is no rebuttal. Prosecute them.

Jim Fawcett   May 29th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

Let's just hope this pathetic ratbag, Deferment Dick, will finally go away. I just can't believe anyone, other than some Republican morons, would actually pay any attention to what this small man has to say! When does he stop feeling guilty about being a draft-dodger?

Kelby In Houston, TX   May 29th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

This is not the issue. Torture is indefensible. It is a morally reprehensible crime. And you people out there who try to defend torture are no better than the people who commit the transgression and it saddens and disgusts me to see you do it.

The entire Bush Administration should be brought to justice for their various crimes.
9/11 happened on Bush's watch and it was due to his incompetence.
The PATRIOT ACT was a mad grab at our constitutional rights.
Warrantless Wire tapping.
These guys outed an undercover CIA agent. THAT'S HIGH TREASON!
AND TORTURE!

AND YOU MEAN TO TELL ME WE CAN'T GET JUSTICE FOR ANY OF THIS?!?!

Former Republican in Pittsburgh   May 29th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

How consistent of Cheney – to lie again.

Brian   May 29th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

I am not really sure who is lying here, but if I had to pick the liar I would go with Cheney. Perhaps he really is not lying but has deluded himself into thinking that he is telling the truth.

Brian W.   May 29th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

Why don't they just put Cheney on a constant diet of cheeseburgers and french fries. His heart will take care of the rest.

don jones   May 29th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

Why would any one be suprised at Cheney's lying?

Here is a scumbag who started out in Washington in the Nixon Whitehouse and came out of it like a greased pig with out one connection to watergate.

Michael Sheridan, Grand Rapids, MI   May 29th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

I'm always amused with the irrelevance of the arguments Republican delusionists keep throwing out on these threads.

"Release Obama's birth certificate," one cries, ignoring the fact that it has already been released.

"What about all those Republican Chrysler dealerships Obama is closing down," wails another, apparently ignorant of the fact that car dealership owners are overwhelmingly Republican, so any randomly selected group of them would include more GOP than Dem supporters.

You're entitled to your own opinion, but only if you bother to inform yourself of all the facts. Google is your friend, but only if you look at something other than the articles that reinforce your prejudices.

New Yorker   May 29th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

Steve M Killeen, TX says he wouldn't believe Cheney if he told him the sky is blue, and that sums up the liberal mind. They just refuse to believe the truth.

JT   May 29th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

Cheny's Torture Tour talking points will be taken into evidence. Liz Cheney will be forced to testify against her father. I would love to see exactly what Bush would stay when pitted against Cheney.

Joe in NJ   May 29th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

Let's see. Cheney said the documents prove that the interrogation techniques worked. The Obama administration won't de-classify the documents. Why? Is it because the documents prove that what Cheney is saying is true? Levin says that Cheney is lying but only after it's decided that the documents will remain classified. Why? Is it because Levin knows he can accuse Cheney of lying and Levin himself won't be made to look like a fool since he knows the documents won't be released?

ThinkAboutIt   May 29th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

Matt M: You've got it wrong; Obama isn't Cheney's "boy", George W. Bush was, is, and always will be Cheney's boy.

Just who do you think was in charge the 8 years of the last Administration? It sure wasn't George; heck, it started before the election in 2000, when Cheney was tasked with picking a VP running mate for Bush and chose – himself!

Bush was a puppet, only picked and used because he could bring the religious right to the voting booth (that poor group of saps needs to wake up and smell the coffee, too – the GOP, under Rove's leadership, has been using them as a pawn in their political game for years).

President Obama is his own man, capable of independent thought, steadfast and real leadership, intelligence and integrity – no wonder the GOP is afraid of him!

Ben   May 29th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

You know, if America blew up every other country we would be safe. I mean, how far are republicans willing to go? Is there no moral basis for your actions?

WhatDoIKnow?   May 29th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

Penny   May 29th, 2009 1:27 pm ET

Quit blaming everything on the Bush Administration, and show us the memos!! Cheney is a strong man of integrity. Nothing anyone can say will change that fact.

Philippe Thomas   May 29th, 2009 1:27 pm ET

The Obama administration needs to execute America's moral responsibility by prosecuting those engaged with violations of the Geneva Convention if we stand any chance of soliciting the international community's support for a resolution against North Korea's United Nation's nuclear agreement violations.

I thought that Bush should have been impeached when they lied to the country about Sadam's WMD as an excuse to send some 5,000 americans to die so that cheney's company could be enriched with exclusive defense contracts. This should have prompted the launch of a full investigation with prosecutions at the highest level of that corrupt administration. As for Cheney, he should and hopefully will be thrown in jail for war crimes.

Lucy   May 29th, 2009 1:27 pm ET

This is a dangerous man. Lied about harsh interrogation. Lied about outing Valerie Plame. If it were anyone else, this would be a case of High Treason. Why should we wait for anyone else????

The Bush/Cheney administration is over. Don't you all think it is time to move forward instead of spewing venom and hate and causing the divide to grow even larger?

Frank, Las Vegas   May 29th, 2009 1:27 pm ET

Cheney is only trying to avoid being tried for War Crimes. Let the trail begin! His story is that it worked so it's ok to break the law, similar to saying, yes I robbed the bank but I used the money for a good purpose. Doesn't make sense does it, nor does Cheney. He's guilty and he's just trying to get out of going to prison.

vegage   May 29th, 2009 1:27 pm ET

It never ceases to amaze me that so many people will continue to defend the terrorist action of the Bush/Cheney regime in Iraq. It is proven that there were no WMDs, therefore no reason to invade. Why do people continue to defend this illegal and immoral war. Why do you not want to protect future generations of American soldiers from spilling their blood for what amounts to a minimum of a huge mistake (faulty intelligence), worst case – a war for vengeance (Bush senior) and profit (Halliburton)?

Why would you rather not admit being wrong than send your children off to their deaths? I understand why Bush and Cheney lie, they don’t to go to jail, but why do some American citizens that have nothing to lose other than a small amount of pride refuse admit the Iraq war was a mistake?

Dennis Watts   May 29th, 2009 1:25 pm ET

What a shock that Dick Cheney would lie! Somebody who has devoted most of his life to government service. This is a case disproving the addage: that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. It's good to know that America was in the
best of hands for the last 30 years. Wars & depressions will always be with us, but people like Dick Cheney will only be with us for a short time.

Josh M, Albany, NY   May 29th, 2009 1:25 pm ET

In 2002, Cheney insisted that Iraq has WMDs, and that anyone who said differently was lying. In 2003, Cheney insisted that Saddam Hussein and Al-Qaida were co-conspirators in 9-11, and that anyone who said differently was lying. In 2006, Cheney (and Bush) insisted that we don't torture, and that anyone who said differently was lying. Now, in 2009, Cheney (and Bush) are insisting that we DID torture, but that it was justified because it helped keep the US safe. How many lies does it take to get to the center of the Bush Administration?

Dick Cheney for KNOWING that CIA documents don't vindicate his lies of saved lives from torture?

Liz Cheney for knowing as much as we know about classified CIA papers and still going on national TV embarrassing herself by taking up her dad's talking points?

There's an 800 lb. red herring in the room. It doesn't matter if the documents contain information or claims that torture "worked." NOTHING could be more unamerican than torture. It is a crime against humanity, a crime against our laws, a crime against international law and, for all you drooling fundies out there, a crime against God. It represents a complete abandonment of our national identity and all that defines us as a society. The ends don't justify the means here. Why? Because, whether it works or not, torturing people means we're not America any more and have lost all right to call ourselves such.

"CIA spokesman Paul Gimigliano, in a written statement, said the two documents Cheney requested are the subject of two pending lawsuits seeking the release of documents related to the interrogation program, and cannot be declassified."

Read the story before you comment. The CIA said the documents cannot be declassified, not Levin or Obama or anyone else.

Maryann Rose   May 29th, 2009 1:21 pm ET

For those of you blaming Obama for not releasing the memos:

Did you not read the whole article?

"CIA spokesman Paul Gimigliano, in a written statement, said the two documents Cheney requested are the subject of two pending lawsuits seeking the release of documents related to the interrogation program, and cannot be declassified."

Unless you want to change the way our legal system works, you'll have to wait for the memos.

Your comment about the documents and President Obama's birth certificate are hilarious. Maybey the goverment should check your documents to see if you should be here, idiot.

Paul-CIA   May 29th, 2009 1:21 pm ET

When will the American people learn that there was and there is no al-Qaeda. This was the nick name given by the CIA to the foreigners who fought in Afghanistan against the Soviets.
We need a Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Nik Green   May 29th, 2009 1:20 pm ET

Cheney has already proved himself a liar. He lied to the 9/11 Commission regarding his whereabouts on the morning of 9/11, when he claimed that he did not arrive at the Presidential Emergency Operation Center (PEOC) until around 10 am, but reliable witnesses, under oath, saw him there directing proceedings shortly after 9 am. Its hardly surprising that Cheney refused to testify to the Commission under oath, because he knew that he could have perjured himself. The question is, why did he have to lie, and what material did he not want to have to tell?

Idiot_Pelosi   May 29th, 2009 1:20 pm ET

First, I trust Cheney more than Levin.

Second, let's start with this root factor: I don't care if we totured these thugs. They are not eligible for any rights. They intentionally killed innoncent people (including children) and are proud of it, so I would have strung them up by their "you know what".

Third, if Obummer wants to change the policy (which he has done), then it is right, so move on. I think OBUMMER is being soft and weak, but I will say it is within his right to change the policy, but to sit there and criticize the former administration is childish. I can't wait for future administrations to publically go after OBUMMER and his HUGE SPENDING and DEFICIT plans.

You like OBUMMER, FINE. YOU PAY HIS TAXES because I'm not.

I have devoted myself to be like a democrat, cheat on my taxes.

Obama Victim   May 29th, 2009 1:20 pm ET

Why isn't Levin calling for the release of the memos?

If you call someone a liar – wouldn't you want to have the proof to support your claim?

Why won't Obama release the memo? He has executive authority just like he did with other Bush memos.

Why won't Obama release the memos?????????

KevinfromtheNorthsideofChicago   May 29th, 2009 1:20 pm ET

Ray Lawson from Danville, VA   May 29th, 2009 1:20 pm ET

Let's waterboard Cheney to get the truth out of him. He shouldn't object, since he says the method isn't torture and is highly successful. Put this on pay-per-view and we could retire the national debt.

John   May 29th, 2009 1:19 pm ET

CHENEY SHOULD BE IN JAIL.

Weapons are Supplied to Terrorists by Countries like Russia and China. Most of the Guantanamo Detainees are citizens of Countries which are in poverty. These countries can’t even manufacture a paper clip, leave aside sophisticated weapons. Weapons are not only being supplied to Al Quida, weapons are also supplied to Somalia Pirates.

So my questions are:
1.....Is our national security more endangered by Russia and China who supply these weapons or from these Poverty driven Countries?
2.....What have we done or what are we doing in terms of stopping arms supply to terrorists?
3.....Information can be obtained from terrorists without torture and inflicting pain. Medical science has drugs that can be safely administered to elicit truth. Why is it necessary to Torture?
4.....Very few of the Guantanamo Detainees were arrested from inside the US. They were captured from Iraq, Afghanistan or other places. Terrorist attacks in US happen from inside the US. We need a better homeland security rather than going after terrorist all over the world. We need to prevent infiltration. What did the Bush Administration do to prevent infiltration?

CIA spokesman Paul Gimigliano, in a written statement, said the two documents Cheney requested are the subject of two pending lawsuits seeking the release of documents related to the interrogation program, and cannot be declassified.

What part of that don't you understand?!?!

Andrew, Pa   May 29th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

Why don't you all stop the back and forth bickering that has gotten this country into the mess into the mess it's in already? The Dems hate the Reps and vice versa! Who cares? This country is a mess because no one in government wants to look out for the people who elected them. What's done is done. Give it a rest already and move on. prosecuting this one or that one isn't change anything. We need to focus on getting this country back on it's feet and the only way to accomplish that is by putting aside the partisan nonsense and working together. You may not like the folks in office now but that's who we have to work with. Enough already.

Candy West Virginia   May 29th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

We already know cheyney and the CIA are liars cause they lied to us about Iraq having WMD's. And now they are trying to accuse Nancy of lying too, I guess it takes one to know one huh?? BTW 911 happened on bush and cheyney's watch, how did they keep America safe?

Jason   May 29th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

VON BISMARK, Vienna you are a complete nimrod. The kind of torture that we try to prosecute other countries for are ones that can cause death (cutting limbs, rape, electrocution to point they stop breathing. Water boarding is no more than a trick to make you feel uncomfortable.

Also how would there be an exact number that you could put on how many lives were saved. He is talking about lives being saved and the kind of targets that they would have hit. How about this you leftist punks that are so much against for not getting good info out of terrorists. Why don't you all go to the same place and let them fly a plan into you all. I would rather see people live and a Talibanian suffer to water boarding. I guess you boneheads like being unsafe.

jim, Middletown, Connecticut   May 29th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

In this thread, someone suggested since we only waterboarded three alledged terrorists, it's okay. Putting aside whether or not that number is correct (I'm guessing it's far more), it seems it's not important if the act is illegal or immoral, it's how many times it's done. That's not just wrong, it's sad.

John Kellermeyer   May 29th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

Since the day Lynn Cheney's father forced Dick back to college, with the long term goal of a monster to do the bidding of Skull and Bones within the framework of our compromised government, Dick Cheney lost whatever replica of a Soul he may have earned, given time and a forgiving Universe.

Too late now to undo his life.

It's not too late to prosecute.

Clay   May 29th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

Well that should be a no-brainer. Cheney is a pathological liar whose logic is second only to that of Goering at Nuremberg. This man needs to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law and locked away forever – or at least until his batteries run out.

BK   May 29th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

Using Dick Cheney as a source of truth, justice, ethics and role-modeling makes as much sense as using the CEOs of AIG or Fannie Mae as a source of good business practices.

Okay we know Cheney lied. So what now? Will he be prosecuted? This man should be punished and put in prison. He cause alot of lives during 9/11. He is as guilty as Bush. These people must be punished for their crimes. He will reap what he has sowed. If he thinks he has gotten away with this; just wait and see. Time will tell because he will suffer the consequences one way or another (personal and/or imprisonment). That you can take to the bank. Just look at him; he is so dissappointed because Bush isn't degrading the Commander-In-Chief and he has no support from his fellow Republican to back him. He missed used his power and leadership and now it's come back to haunt him. What has he got to say about that? ah ah ah

Obama 2012

jay in denver   May 29th, 2009 1:15 pm ET

If the enhanced interrogation techniques were as successful as Cheney asserts, I assume the information gleaned allowed us to capture and prosecute Osama bin Laden. I must have missed that particular news cycle, though.

Oh, and BTW, we somehow managed to defeat the Japanese empire, Communism, and the Nazis without resorting to torture. Explain to me, using small words and visual aids, why we need to justify using it now.

Liar + War Profiteer + Coward = Dick Cheney, disgraceful and unAmerican.

Mike Hawthorne   May 29th, 2009 1:13 pm ET

It's interesting that Cheney wants these memos released now to prove his longtime assertion of the effectiveness of waterboarding. Yet, while he was still in office, the outcry against waterboarding and other interrogation techniques at that time did not cause him to ask his boss, George W., to release those very same memos.

If George wasn't willing to release them to save both their butts, then maybe there's not much about those memos to prove Cheney's point after all. It seems that Cheney is counting heavily on the memos remaining classified.

Mike Hawthorne, Utah

Ryan   May 29th, 2009 1:12 pm ET

Don’t forget how Attorney General Eric Holder thinks waterboarding is torture.
CONGRESSMAN DAN LUNGREN, R-CALIF.: If we're causing them to undergo waterboarding, even under the guise of training them, aren't we subjecting them to torture if you have defined waterboarding as torture?
CONGRESSMAN LOUIE GOHMERT, R-TEXAS: If our officers when waterboarding had no intent to do permanent harm and in fact knew absolutely they would do no permanent harm to the person being waterboarded, and their only intent was to get information to save people in this country, then they would not have tortured under your definition, isn't that correct?

U.S. ATTORNEY GENERAL ERIC HOLDER: Not in the legal sense. I think that's a fundamentally different thing. It's not torture in the legal sense because we're not doing it with the intention of harming these people physically or mentally.

Polar Bears Against Palen   May 29th, 2009 1:12 pm ET

Until the memo and others things come out, there is no way to know who's lying, who's telling the truth, who said what and who knew what. This way it would stop wasting people's time with assinine pointless arguments between the talking heads in the media and politicians.

eyesWIDEopen   May 29th, 2009 1:12 pm ET

Once and for all: It makes NO DIFFERENCE whether the "enhanced" techniques saved American lives! The Bush team wants to make this about whether or not torture works. Everyone ouside of the Bush Administration who engages in this argument is only aiding the Bush/Cheney agenda. The only rational answer to that question is...the ends can NEVER justify the means, PERIOD. No further discussion needed.

kevincollins   May 29th, 2009 1:11 pm ET

Yet you project vile hate. THINK ABOUT IT.... you're nothing more than a vessel for ugliness.

Dave   May 29th, 2009 1:11 pm ET

What most people call lying, Cheney calls breathing.

And speaking of lies, it amazes me the untruths people spew on these tickers when they try to justify Bush. Some guy on another story was claiming that job creation was up in 2006, and that the Dow was at an all-time high... and that is such a total and easily-checked lie that it's incredible. The Republicans are desperate to find a scapegoat for their failures, but the fact is, they ran roughshod over this country for 8 years, with almost no resistance; the reason Congress's approval rating was so low even after 2006 was the Dems who got elected didn't do their job and oppose Bush's policies - they just sent them right through. Conservativism got a really good testing during Bush's administration, and it failed on every level... and now Republicans are trying to find someone else to blame rather than admit that their entire ideology is wrong and gets terrible results.

Mike   May 29th, 2009 1:11 pm ET

Levin didn't have to tell us that, we already knew it. Just like the so called memos that say Pelosi was told about waterboarding. There are no memos about the meetings of the committees. The only memos and this has been told over and over by the five federal officials who investigated and read the available memos, were written by the CIA long after the meeting was supposed to have taken place. The federal authorities who read them said, and this has also been reported in the press, but no one seems to have read it, that the memos are only the so called memories of the CIA. AND REALLY NOW, AFTER LYING ABOUT THE TORTURE, WIRETAPPING AND ALL THE OTHER STUFF, only those who want to believe that nonsense do.

Greg   May 29th, 2009 1:06 pm ET

I think the lack of a terrorist attack on US soil the past eight proves whatever Bush & Cheney did was effective... given that reportedly every bone in McCain's body was broken, I think the terrorists' fears of being drowned are nowhere near the torture US soldiers have faced, and the namby-pamby doves in Washington need to realize the same as our government did after Pearl Harbor, the gloves are off and we shouldn't be held back by the UN or NATO or any other restrictions concerning enemies of the state... when the equivalent of 9/11 happens in the rest of the world, a new attitude will emerge towards these thugs. Maybe we should 'bounce the rubble' with a few nukes on the border mountains between Pakistan and Afghanistan, and at the same time remind North Korea what it means to be a superpower. God bless the USA!!!

Interesting then, that the Democrats should say that Cheney is lying and the the documents prove this, and then refuse to release the documents. Unless, of course, it is the Democrats that are lying.

Two things are made clear by the comments here: First, most of you are going to believe what your party is telling you to believe, so it doesn't matter what the documents actually reveal. Second, a lot of you should find something more productive to do with your time than spend all day bickering on these sites.

Alphonse Bluengreenenbrownenburger   May 29th, 2009 1:04 pm ET

The assumption that Cheney, Bush and the rest are trying to fool you with is the notion that torture was the best, fastest, most reliable way of interrogation. The truth is that the "enhanced interrogation" was not the best technique, nor the fastest, nor even particularly reliable, according to the interrogation professionals in our government.

The Bush administration chose a mediocre approach over much better ones, an approach that shamed us on the world stage.

I wish some Republican had the courage to stand up and say that Americans do not do that, that we stand for higher and better things.

Chi Town   May 29th, 2009 1:03 pm ET

So release the documents...

Curious how long Levin knew this? When was he briefed? Was he with Pelosi...

Release them all... and burn all who knew about it... good for the goose... good for the (well you know)

barbara   May 29th, 2009 1:03 pm ET

Carl,
Please allow ME, an American, to READ for MYSELF what the documents say or do not say. DO NOT tell us what YOU think the documents say or what you personally read in them. Let us think for ourselves. Thats whats wrong with you politicians, you dont trust the people to decide for themselves. I hate that all of you think we are stupid, and maybe we were to elect your butt to congress/senate.

Thank you for PROVING that liberals are blind to the truth because of their partisan hatred!

Because you hate Cheney – you refuse to believe the sky is blue.

Because you hate Cheney – you refuse to believe there are terrorists trying to hurt us.

Because you hate Cheney – you think BUSH & Cheney were the ones who concocted this intelligence reports about Saddam having WMDs – irregardless of intelligence reports from France, Germany, Russia, England, and other countries saying EXACTLY THE SAME THING.

Because you hate Cheney – you've become a blathering idiot.

Hint to all RATIONAL people reading these posts - any time you see someone refer to Obama's economic policies as "socialism" or "socialistic" or ask - again - about Obama's birth certificate - those are imbecils who only listen to Rush and ditto his own complete lack of knowledge.

Obama's made his birtch certificate available since back when he was running and the idiocy first came up. The state of Hawaii certifies it.

9 out of 10 economist predict we should see an END to the recession and possibly an UPturn by the end of THIS YEAR. THIS YEAR. Yet - Obama's plans aren't working.

See what I mean?

These are ALL people you can just skip. Their comments are the rattling of empty heads.

Spider   May 29th, 2009 1:02 pm ET

Why can't we just leave this behind us?

Is waterboarding torture?

It's an interrogation technique that involves making an individual feel there is a possibility he will drown. Is that torture? I don't know. If I am able to convince a person he is going to lose something valuable if he doesn't talk, is that always torture?

Did waterboarding work?

Well, we came up with intelligence, somehow, that prevented another attack on this country since 9/11/2001. Was it attained through interrogation of our detainees or in some other way?

Should we prosecute the Bush Administration for war crimes?

Of course not!!! Leave this alone and get on with life.

My biggest worry is what are we going to do if there is another 9/11? We can't afford it. The Obama Administration is too busy becoming owners of all of our banks, mortgage/insurance companies and auto makers.

This worry about the past is a smoke screen to make people miss what's going on today.

James, Phoenix AZ   May 29th, 2009 1:02 pm ET

Cheney lied???

Next thing they'll be saying is that the sun is big, round and hot.

Jyoti   May 29th, 2009 1:02 pm ET

Why am I not suprised?? When has Cheney ever told the truth :)

Proud Member..Party of No   May 29th, 2009 1:02 pm ET

I believe Cheney. I don't believe Levin.....Levin is a democrat, therefore Levin lies.

Brian, Tamworth, NH   May 29th, 2009 1:01 pm ET

Someone should humor Jesse Ventura's request for , 1 hour, a waterboard setup and Dick Cheney's presence. I'm sure we'll be able to detain someone who confesses to the Tate murders almost indefinately. We could even throw in a military trial and some hersey, since it's allowed there. California IS the frontlines of the 'war on terror and drugs', it is, after all, a battlefield according to them. No Geneva Convention violations there. Given his distain for the American people he should even be declared an enemy of the state. Good luck with that 2012 bid from the 'new Gitmo' wherever that ends up crashing down!

This liberal democrat against Obama   May 29th, 2009 1:01 pm ET

I quite agree with you, Brain in AZ. Levin is the biggest liar of all time.

He must took some pointers from Obama!

morris diehl   May 29th, 2009 1:00 pm ET

bush lied so your child died, chaney was too busy to go to viet nam, just schmucks like me, so he has no standing other than he is a war criminal that the gutless world courts won't arrest. Why don't you racist right wingers go off and die.

buddy   May 29th, 2009 1:00 pm ET

...and this surprises who? The reason Bush told an audience that torture worked was because Cheney told him it did. Again, does this surprise you? Keep on digging that hole Dick....

ghost   May 29th, 2009 1:00 pm ET

Can't have it both ways, people. Someone's lying and we don't know who. Neither has proof. So till we release the docs, everyone needs to shut the eff up about it.

Chris - Denver   May 29th, 2009 1:00 pm ET

I wish it were surprising that the former Vice president would lie to the American people. Alas, it is not.

He can safely lie and say that, because he knows his boy, Obama won't release them.

Typical lying democrat.

VON BISMARK,Vienna.   May 29th, 2009 12:59 pm ET

The right question is: is waterboarding torture and thus a war crime? If waterboarding were so "effective" why did the Americans prosecute other people for applying it to American soldiers? Is international law only enforceable on weak countries?

Disclassify the documents and let the truth come out if the democrates were not also envolved. Hypocrites!

nick   May 29th, 2009 12:58 pm ET

I do believe Sen. Carl Levin, over Dick Chenet any day of the week. However, if there are any Republican Senators on the Armed Services Committe, this information coming from one of them would make a stronger statement . Why can´t one of them speak up? Are they waiting for Rush´s approval?

Jean   May 29th, 2009 12:58 pm ET

Lets see all the memo.

We know how his game is played.

Pierre Changstien   May 29th, 2009 12:58 pm ET

nice the see the democrat terrorist defense squad out in full force. remember folks, we are talking about the waterboarding of ONLY 3 senior alQaeda members, each of whom had a role in the 9/11 attacks.. that is all... 3 al Q members who particiapted in the murder of 3000 americans and made it clear they want to kill many, many more.. you freaks make it sound like cheney was rounding up liberals and waterboarding them. maybe we should be waterboarding you al Qaeda sympathizing traitors....

Hey, Levin can't campaign in Detroit about the economic successes of Obamanomic socialism, so why wouldn't he take the easy way out and pump himself up against a person with a reputation like Cheney's?

In fact, I'd be surprised if Levin WEREN'T trying to distract us from bad policies with bed personalities...

Easy way to solve this...

Show the documents. Release them all.

Obama can use that time to show his birth certificate too. Not that I care, but the fact that the man is going to spend over a million dollars to keep his birth certificate sealed peaks my interest.

Fair is Fair   May 29th, 2009 12:57 pm ET

Everyone wants the documents declassified. So do it! Someonw will be proven correct – someone will be proven incorrect. I mean really... this isn't very difficult, is it?

Where is the "Transparency" you promised??

Why did you redact the released memo – removing the affirmation noted by your Secretary of Defense??

All we hear are baseless allegations from Pelosi and now Levin – yet the PRESIDENT refuses to allow us all to see the TRUTH.

Why????

Kevin in Ohio   May 29th, 2009 12:57 pm ET

Lori   May 29th, 2009 12:56 pm ET

liquidbread   May 29th, 2009 12:56 pm ET

The fact that somepeople still have W or Bush Cheney stickers on their cars not only amazes me, but proves what an effective liar Cheney has been and continues to be. At one point, polls showed that 60% of Americans believed that Saddam Hussein was responsible for 9-11 – mostly due to the lies Cheney told in their run up to a war of choice that had nothing to do with 9-11. His lies and continuous politics of fear got Bush re-elected in 2004. It's about time that our elected offficials stood up to him in large numbers, call him out on his lies and deceptions, then appoint a special prosecuter to investigate his actions over the past 9 years! If the republicants can spend the time, effort and waste the money they did on the Clinton / Lewinsky affair, why can't democrats get the nerve to investigate something worthwhile to hold people acountable and prevent those abuses of power from ever happening again?

ObamaShrugged   May 29th, 2009 12:56 pm ET

A Democrat claims Cheney lied. Rush claims Pelosi lied. Liberal moonbats hate George Bush. CNN is the master of the obvious.

Where are the articles about Repub car dealers being term'd by BHO's car czar. Or the dismissal of the case v. New Black Panther party?

Randall, Georgia   May 29th, 2009 12:55 pm ET

Sounds like Levin is the liar. RELEASE the documents! If you're telling the truth Levin, what's the problem?

Peoples Voice   May 29th, 2009 12:55 pm ET

Cheney really thought the info on these memos would not get out. That's why he lied about what's on them. Way to go Senator. Let the truth ring loud and clear.

im tired of this subject. why dont we punish terrorist with the same methods we would an underage shoplifter? our government is overstepping its bounds and wasting a lot of time money and energy in so many areas right now. ok don't waterboard anymore, but leave the idiot alone its done, nothing is going to correct it. nothings gonna make it right. im afraid of where this is all going. I never thought the american people would stand by and watch its constitution be ignored and it foundation be dug up by its governing forces. but really what do you mean waterboarding doesnt work? you should try it sometime

Jim in San Jose   May 29th, 2009 12:54 pm ET

Reminds me of the old Joke: How can you tell if a lawyer is lying? His lips are moving.

Cheney has bamboozled himself, and his supporters, to believe that lies are the truth and that the truth is a lie.

Our only hope is that he and Bush (the boob) will be brought up on war crimes charges.

SHIRLEY -SDL   May 29th, 2009 12:54 pm ET

Unless Cheney somehow has mistakenly requested the wrong documents (sarcasm), that means that he is the lier and the coward that he has always been. All we have to do is be patient, the truth will come out soon, then maybe he will go away and take lipbaugh with him forever. The truth really won't do anything for his daughter's political ambitions either, will it?

lynn in NM   May 29th, 2009 12:54 pm ET

Of course, he says Cheney lied. Where was he when this was going on? Was he in the same briefing that Nancy was? Everything is the Bush administration's fault. No one says a word about the fact that if Billy Jeff had done what he was supposed to when we were attacked, none of this would have happened in the first place. However, "talking" fixed everything. Yeap, until we were bombed again.

Ruty   May 29th, 2009 12:53 pm ET

There you go... You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

The FBI interrogator used sugarless cookies and got very useful information. Waterboarding is torture, no ifs ands or buts...

When out soldiers had this done, there were doctors there, and it can cause death. Cheney is evil, he and Bush lied to us. WMD's in Iraq where our focus should have been in Afghanistan to catch and kill Osama Bin Laden and to get rid of the Taliban, now they are in Pakistan and trying to take over that Country."

Dont blame me   May 29th, 2009 12:52 pm ET

Only 1 way to solve this.

SHOW ME THE DOCUMENTS!!!!!!!

Otherwise I will assume that Levin is the liar.

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   May 29th, 2009 12:49 pm ET

Lies! So what the hell was Bush talking about last night that the intelligence they gathered from torturing these detainees saved lives? They are living in a fantasy world and not the real one. They can't rewrite history. Their is no great legacy to be told about the Bush Regime 20-30 years from now.
