Levin: Memos don't show what Cheney says they do

Democratic Sen. Carl Levin is challenging former Vice President Cheney's recent claims about the effectiveness of the Bush administration's use of harsh interrorgation techniques.
Democratic Sen. Carl Levin is challenging former Vice President Cheney's recent claims about the effectiveness of the Bush administration's use of harsh interrorgation techniques.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, says former Vice President Dick Cheney's claims - that classified CIA memos show enhanced interrogation techniques like waterboarding worked - are wrong.

Levin, speaking at the Foreign Policy Association's annual dinner on Wednesday, said an investigation by his committee into detainee abuse charges over the use of the techniques - now deemed torture by the Obama administration - "gives the lie to Mr. Cheney's claims."

The Michigan Democrat told the crowd that the two CIA documents that Cheney wants released "say nothing about numbers of lives saved, nor do the documents connect acquisition of valuable intelligence to the use of abusive techniques."

"I hope that the documents are declassified, so that people can judge for themselves what is fact, and what is fiction," he added.

Pierre Changstien, So you are saying that if I only murdered 3 people, that would be OK? But don't go over 3? Is that how the rule of law works?

Someone is not telling the truth? Imagine that? My dollars on are Cheney who hasn't exactly had a proven track record of truthfulness yet. Release the documents and be done with it.

Cheney has been lying his pants off from DAY 1 to save his dying torture & draconian legacy!!!

Ms. Dick Cheney lied to get the US to fight an illegal war in Irak and he is now spewing a bold-face lie to justify his criminal conduct – the best treatment for this gorrila war-criminal is for Ms. Dick Cheney to be waterboarded everyday and locked up with his terrorist ilks in GITMO!!!

Okay, Levin, you ethical genius, let's release the memos...ALL the memos, what are you afraid of, that's all Cheney has been asking for, so why don't you do it, you arrogant, know-it-all, piece of excrement.

Dick Cheney has absolutely no credibility. He and his Daughter made a big mistake trying to repair his image. Now when I see Dick Cheney, all I am reminded of his his torture policies. He should have faded in the backround (like Bush),

  8. thanks, but no thanks

Why does it matter who lied? The FBI agent who testified before congress deemed those techniques to be ineffective in retaining valuable information. l have to believe someone in that line of work instead a politician like Cheney.

For all of you who insist that the Dems or Obama are holding back the documents you think will prove Cheney right, can't you even read the article you commented on? The CIA cannot release docs that are part of a freedom of information act lawsuit until that prior request for release is dealt with – that's the law, not Obama's secret agenda – idiots!

Hey Matt M: It's not up to "his boy" on whether or not the memo's are released. Documents that are classified because of National Security are only released upon approval of the NSA or if a court of law calls for its release.

If you're going to blog in the big leagues... please go back to whatever high school you went to and demand an education, because yours isn't worth a sniff!!!

Regarding Condi Rice: Do you all remember her speaking and subseequent Q&A in the hallway with students? It was soooo obvious that she was scared sh–tless during that exchange. Like Dick and W she is guilty as hell of lying, spinning, c-y-a, for the war crimes committed. Note: haven't seen her out speaking or answering questions since have we? Hmmmmm.

What happens if 4 planes crash into buildings tomorrow – does BHO still have "green" cars and free healthcare done in the next 3-8 years? You people have short memories – take a ride to NY and look at that big hole in the ground again.

I cannot believe the audacity of Levin!! Cheney never said a particular number of people's lives were saved – suffice it to say – lives were saved!!! Levin is an a$$ and know his cowardly liar-campaigner-fundraiser, and everything in between EXCEPT commander and chief is to chicken to show the memos!

Then release the memos. Simple as that. Anyone, especially politicians, can call anyone else a liar without proof.

  21. Post always rejected by CNN

Levin didn't have to tell us that, we already knew it. Just like the so called memos that say Pelosi was told about waterboarding. There are no memos about the meetings of the committees. The only memos and this has been told over and over by the five federal officials who investigated and read the available memos, were written by the CIA long after the meeting was supposed to have taken place. The federal authorities who read them said, and this has also been reported in the press, but no one seems to have read it, that the memos are only the so called memories of the CIA. AND REALLY NOW, AFTER LYING ABOUT THE TORTURE, WIRETAPPING AND ALL THE OTHER STUFF, only those who want to believe that nonsense do.

Cheney's a liar, He said there were WMD, none, He said waterboarding helped get vital information. Release the documents. Prove him wrong. He's a fear mongor and a racist. Release the documents then give him his hat and send him on his evil way. Doesn't he have a prison to run?

No surprise that Cheney lied to back up his bluff. Now his lying buddy Bush rears his ugly head to keep the lie going because they now know the tapes won't be released. They bluffed their way through with hopes that the military generals would go along with them by saying it would put our troops at risk.
