Obama creates 'cybersecurity coordinator' position

WASHINGTON (CNN) - President Barack Obama announced Friday he is creating the post of cybersecurity coordinator to oversee "a new comprehensive approach to securing America's digital infrastructure."

The president said he will personally select the person who takes on that post, and "will depend on this official" in all matters related to cybersecurity.

Tackling the economic crisis cannot be done without ensuring the safety of the nation's online activities, Obama said.

CNN Radio reports: Obama announces new cybersecurity post

He referred to last year's hacking of computers at his campaign headquarters. The hackers did not access databases containing information about campaign donors, but did gain access to policy position papers and travel plans, Obama said.

"I know how it feels" to have online privacy violated, the president said.

CNN reported in November that computers at the headquarters of Obama's rival for the presidency, Sen. John McCain, had been broken into with similar results.

So now its a "Coordinator"? My, that was a quick change form calling him a "Czar". I hope Obama comrades aren't too disappointed.

I'm not a big fan of making a bunch of new positions for each and every little detail, but I must say, this one seems very realistic and justified. I hope whoever is appointed is very successful.

Also, what is with all of the people posting comments here about being censored, the President not doing his job, rights being taken away, etc. Most of those comments are paranoid beyond conspiracy theories, or just plain ridiculous. President Obama is doing a good job, and he hasn't been in office for that long. Get a life, people.

Wow – another TV opportunity. Why did Obama bother to hire a press secretary? I'm getting tired of Obama's daily news briefings. I prefer he stay in the Oval Office and do some work instead of appearing on TV every day reading his teleprompter.

Honestly some of the GOPers comments here are totally silly and ignorant.

Don't you people have a life?

You are simply confirming what all of America knows........

GOP= hate, lies, fear and division.

This is an excellent move. although most people dont realize it now, they will realize the importance of vigilence regarding te cyber world. only when a real attack happens.
although the republicans harp on the "security" issue so much, idiots like bush & cheney who never used the internet, would've never realized how important the internet is, or shall i say internets.

the ranks of "political paybacks" just continue to swell almost as much as Obama's head.
Too bad the practical experience factor in most of the Obama administration, including POTUS, is either academic or without MEASURABLE STATISTICAL RESULTS.
Appropriating funds without following up on the intended purpose and the actual result is NOT practical real world experience. It is throwing away other people's money.

It's really amazing to watch the Republicans find something negative in evvvverrryyyyttthhhiiinnnnggg this President does. And they wonder why such a small minority identifies itself as Republicans these days. It's because the GOP has become the party of horses' patoots.

He's taken over the Banks, the Auto Industry. Now, he's taking over Internet Commerce – how long before he decides that the government needs to have eyes on every PC? I see Big Brother in the works.

The line should be drawn at government computers. Private corporations (and citizens) should handle their own security.

Don't China and Iran have "cyber czars" that control the security of their computers?

@ Fair is Fair, who said "Nah… let's just create a czar. That will take care of the problem"

And what do you think the "czar's" job is going to be? hmmm? Are you people so blinded by hate and bitter anger that you've lost the capability to produce rational thought? Whoever gets appointed is going to spend all their time working with other top-notch industry experts on figuring out what needs to be done to better protect both government and private sector IT infrastructure and then helping the POTUS implement it. It's such a freekin no-brainer what this post is designed to do...and that its absence from the ranks of our government is conspicuous. Either you're well aware that this makes perfect sense and are simply lying or you just don't understand the world around you. Choose.

But I thought Bush did such a bang up job with NK that we needn't worry about them anymore, because they'd been so thoroughly chastised and put in their place that they would forever give up on creating a nuke?
