Obama expected to announce 'cyber czar' position

WASHINGTON (CNN) - President Obama is expected to announce Friday the creation of the position of cyber czar, a person who will coordinate the nation's efforts to protect government and private computer systems from hackers, criminal gangs, terrorists and spies, people familiar with the plan said Thursday.

The czar will report to both the national security adviser and the head of the National Economic Council, the sources said.

Obama will not name anyone Friday to the post because the selection process is ongoing, they said.

In addition, the White House will release a 40-page report that sets broad goals for combating cyber intrusions, but does not spell out in detail how to do so, said the sources, who would not agree to be identified because the report has not been released.

Something the Republicans and Democrats both share, is a lack of respect for individual rights. Cyber Czar.... the name sums it up. If I didn't believe in public schools and going to the moon and stuff, I would be a libertarian in a heartbeat.

Kudos to the president. It's about time someone proctected the us against the new criminal. Instead of robbing us on the street they can now raid our bank accounts from the couch.

I guess this is one of the 150,000 jobs Obama claims he's created. The Obama administration has circumvented the Constitution more than any other president in history, and Congress does nothing.

I can't wait for 2010 to boot Nancy and Harry out, then 2012 to boot Obama out.

It's about time that a sitting President understands technology outside of a type writer, or the No. 2 pencil.

" the White House will release a 40-page report that sets broad goals for combating cyber intrusions, but does not spell out in detail how to do so" Sorta of like Obama's plans to close down Gitmo or fix the economy, he wants to do it but doesn't have a clue as to how?

Of course he is..... He will find new and creative ways to WASTE taxpayers money. I love to hear all the democrats complain on here that Republicans are so tough on OBAMA. Are you people serious , after the way you treated Bush the last 8? Remember what comes around goes around and we will show Obama the same respect you showed Bush.......Its going to be a long 4 yrs for your boy.....

How does it come that every new position in the Obama administration gets labelled 'Czar'. That gives a not necessary communist impression. I can only assume CNN likes to use it again and again because its short and catchy.

This is long overdue and needed. Though a lot of the cyber attack news is hype, there is a very important role for an individual to investigate methods of protecting the country from such attacks.

It's good that Obama is creating this new position to protect the government's computer system, as computers are as vulnerable to attacks and security breaches as other forms of information storage, if not more vulnerable.

hmmm, here's a source that wont agree to be identified, because report hasnt been released ? and report doesnt spell out in details HOW to combat cyber intrusions ??? Whats wrong with this picture ? anyone ever heard of "LOOSE LIPS SINKS SHIPS" ? WHY in world should White House "spell out" the details in that report ? wouldnt that be defeating the purpose of having a czar to COMBAT cyber intrusions ? Many times, there are things the reporters and the public do NOT need to know ! and I never trust unidentified "sources" anyways !

Again, if he's all about keeping everything transparent and not being called socialist, why does he keep appointing people to positions of sweeping power with no oversight and calling them "czars?" Does anyone else have a problem with giving an unaccountable person loads of power with no checks and balances?

How about an Asian man who feels that, as a person of Asian decent, he would imagine himself to be better-suited for the job than a caucasian man...

What Obama really needs is a spending czar. Someone who will cut out the pork projects and cut our deficit this year from $2 trillion to 0... stop giving money to Wall street firms. Stop giving money to GM. Stop giving money to lazy people who will not work. Stop giving money to health cost to people who find the money to smoke and drink and have cable tv yet won't pay for health insurance or medical bills. Stop spending money on Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid's pet projects. Stop spending money on voluntary wars or try to fix Middle east countries that have been fighting for centuries....stop the madness. Live within a budget. Stop talking about raising taxes when you haven't even demonstrated an ability to live within the budget of the money that you have now!!!! THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION ECONOMIC STRATEGY IS CRAZY AND WILL BANKRUPT OUR COUNTRY!!!!!

Unfortunately Limbaugh and Gingrich have pointed out some serious flaws in this woman's ideology. This woman has made some comments publicly that are very disturbing. If I were Obama I would find someone else. No ones perfect but at least we need someone in the supreme court that believes the court doesn't make law but rather it determines its constitutionality. I heard why she was called a racist and to a certain degree they both have a point.

Dear CNN, when you mention the "latina woman" remark from Sotomayor that Limbaugh and Gingrich references, you do us a HUGE DISSERVICE by not showing her complete quote. If people could read the entire CONTEXT of her remark, it would show you how utterly disingenuous and sleazy both Limbaugh and Gingrich are being, because she is actually saying the exact OPPOSITE of what they are accusing her of. It's absolutely SHAMEFUL that you are not doing your jobs of revealing the complete context of the story!!! PLEASE, CNN, focus on your jobs AS NEWS, NOT Sensationalism!

    Great idea!
Maybe the Czar can find a bit of time during his free time to teach the Repubs and Conservs how to turn on a computer and cell

Naw! Too late. They already lost the election in 2008. But, maybe by 2010 there is hope?
Naw! They are still chasing windmills. This time they have found a way to make the latinos and women of this country really really mad. Way to go fools!
Now form a circle, load your guns ... Ready, aim, fire! Geeez, I forgot to tell them to face out not in.

Couldn't they pick a grown up title? "Cyber Czar" sounds like the villian from an early 90s hacking movie.
