PMG Group lobbying activities are under investigation by federal authorities.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Indiana, confirmed Friday that federal law enforcement officials had issued subpoenas for materials from his congressional and campaign offices in their investigation of a defense lobbying firm that had employed his former chief of staff.

The PMA Group was raided by the FBI earlier this year. Former Visclosky chief of staff Rich Kaelin had lobbied for the firm.

"Federal law enforcement officials have issued grand jury subpoenas to my Congressional office, campaign committees, and certain employees to request documents relating to PMA," Visclosky said in a statement. "It is my intention to fully cooperate with the investigation consistent with my constitutional obligations to Congress and my duties and responsibilities to my constituents.

"I will continue to work hard to represent the people of Indiana's First Congressional District as I have done since being elected to Congress. I am confident that at the end of this process, no one will conclude that I have done anything wrong or harmed my constituents in any way," he said. Citing respect for the investigative process, the congressman said he would not be commenting further on the situation.

Visclosky has returned thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from the firm and its employees, who were among his biggest financial supporters.

What's up with the right wingers acting like the left won't accept (and punish) the guilt of democrats? Just ask how hard the door hit Daschle in the butt after they found out he was getting free limo service and not paying taxes on it. I wish I didn't have to see stuff like that about my party ( we aren't all limo liberals, some of us are just blue collar populists with our eyes wide open) but when I do, I am happy to see how quick we boot em. Jefferson should have got the boot before the money in his freezer had time to thaw, in my opinion.

@ donttreadonme, who said "We know you get most your talking points from the Huffington Post and regurgitate that vile garbage here. "

Actually, I would gladly take a lie detector test and tell you I never read Huffington. I'm dead serious. I don't. I play on here intermittentlly during work and then go home and flip on CNN or some other tv nonsense for background noise while I read or do something else. I don't like DailyKos or most of the other lean-one-way places either. I like it here because there's lots of different viewpoints, so your own posts can actually stand out if you make a good point (or a good zing hehe). If you think I'm biased for ragging on the GOP all the time, then perhaps you should take a deep breath and think about what I've said instead of just hating that it goes against what you want to hear. Like I've said, I'll stop as soon as the GOP starts behaving like adults and stops trying to take over the country with societally damaging tactics. Whether you agree with his policies or not, one thing you can't deny about Obama (and perhaps this is what rankles for you guys the most) is that he helped us think positive again. The GOP trying to ruin that will only ruin their party.

Too True For You   May 29th, 2009 6:24 pm ET

HEY DUMMIES: Visclosky ISN'T BEING INVESTIGATED. The subpeonas are for documents related to his FORMER chief of staff's past lobbying activities for the firm THAT IS under investigation.

Geez, do any of you foaming at the mouth partisan attack dogs EVER read past the headline? It is SO PITIFUL the way the anti-democrat barracudas are reduced to siezing on and conflating any molecule of possible negative issue. But then, that is what their heroes Rush, Hannity, Beck, Coulter, Savage, and all of Faux Noise does, so what can you do?

Now, is there likely some wrongdoing with the FORMER chief of staff and/or the LOBBYING FIRM? Welll, duh! It's money, it's politics, it's power. What do you think?

IsaacTheForcedCatholic   May 29th, 2009 6:19 pm ET

Otto   May 29th, 2009 6:12 pm ET

Hello ED and your Republican friends who are talking about DEMS being corrupt; take a look in the mirror and you'll see Richard Cheney lied about those documents. He lied about his arrogance and Bush lied about Iraq and many other things.

No only does the Republicans lied; they caused thousands to die needlessly. Thousands more are suffering daily and will suffer for many years. Every GI that served in Iraq and their families will suffer for the rest of their lives.

Funny how you folks are talking about an issue that is "just" being investigated and no one know for sure what the out come will be.

Why not talk about your evil masters and the stench they left in their trails.

Edward lawler   May 29th, 2009 6:07 pm ET

malclave   May 29th, 2009 6:06 pm ET

What a waste of time.

As a Democrat, Visclosky's word is worthless, as the "truth" becomes what is most politically expedient for him. Therefore, any oath he takes to tell the truth will be ignored, and Democrats are not subject to perjury laws.

Due process of the law is not even on the neo-con radar as a concept!

Ken Shade, not all lobbying is bad. If there's an issue with toilet paper, say it breaks out your rear, someone lobbying the TP industry is likely to, um, well, be covering your butt. We don't need to outlaw the candy lobby or the hairdryer lobby, or whatever. It's when they lobby the big money industries that they send Tony Soprano instead of someone reasonable. And it's Lobby-IST, not lobbist, like a waiting room where they hang around waiting to tug someone's sleeve on their way out.

In other words, if Visclosky isn't charged with a criminal offense then he is "cleared" of wrongdoing! What a misrepresentation of the burden of proof in a criminal trial. Too bad Visclosky's constituents don't hold him to a higher standard of ethics than just not being convicted of a crime.

Paul from Phoenix   May 29th, 2009 4:31 pm ET

I don't know why this is a surprise to anyone. There will be more stories about corrupt dems because they are the majority. Then, the pendulum will swing (remember Abramoff?), and the GOP will get hit.

It happens all the time. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Right now, the dems have absolute power, so they are going to act stupid thinking that they are uncatchable. There are more to come, with Murtha probably being the next to fall.

In the end, GOP or Dem, all think they are made of teflon, which is why we see the same scandals over and over again.

Sniffit   May 29th, 2009 4:24 pm ET

Funniest part of all of this? Nothing about having these documents subpoenaed means he's corrupt. Documents are frequently subpoenaed from innocent parties when investigating someone else. CNN has intentionally kept the article incrediblly vague to encourage the idiocy we're seeing from the GOPers. One might, at first blush, think that makes CNN biased towards them...but then again, the GOPers are only hurting themselves with their nonsense, so who knows.

@ Ken Shade, who said "outlaw the giving of anything that can be construded as a gift or payment from any person or persons that represent or ar tied to any company or business."

A. It is already against th elaw to bribe and give gifts.

B. You can't tell corporations they can't donate to campaigns, etc., because the SCOTUS has interpreted the Constitution to protect donations as a matter of free speech.

C. You CAN limit the amount of donations. This is where it's at. Large corporations and interest groups are able to sway politicians so heavily because they are capable of giving far more than your average individual. The key in terms of campaign finance reform lies in finding a way to limit the amounts of donations to prevent money from determining how "loudly" people and corporations are talking to their representatives, so that the substance of what is being said can move to the forefront.

The lonely Libertarian of Liverpool NY   May 29th, 2009 4:20 pm ET

I agree with Ken Shade why are lobbyists allowed to bribe our representatives? Why is campaign fund raising even allowed from outside the representative district? All contributions either from corporations, Wall Street, banking, unions, lobbyists, etc…should be banned. Only money raised from the people they are representing should be allowed. People not businesses and with a limit, it is time to stop having every election go to the person who can raise the most money.

If that is the case then why do our elected officials get so much money from lobbist representing businesses? To me they are simply buying our elected officials because they perform acts that usually only benefit big business. This is all wrong. Pass a federal law that outlaws all lobbying of public officials except in public hearings where they can voice their opinions just as the citizens do and outlaw the giving of anything that can be construded as a gift or payment from any person or persons that represent or ar tied to any company or business.
