Carter sounds off on Obama

(CNN) - Former President Jimmy Carter tells CNN he believes photos showing detainee abuse should be released to the public - putting him at odds with President Obama, who has said the release of those pictures could endanger U.S. troops.

In an interview set to air Monday night, Carter told CNN's Campbell Brown some of President Obama's supporters are disappointed in him. "Most of his supporters were hoping that he would be much more open in the revelation of what we've done in the past," said the former president, although he added that he still respects Obama's judgment on the issue: "I don't agree with him, but I certainly don't criticize him for making that decision."

Earlier this month, Obama asked government lawyers to stop the release of photos showing prisoner abuse in Iraq and Afghanistan, a reversal of an earlier White House position. Hundreds of photos were set for release after a Freedom of Information Act request was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union.

Carter also seemed to disagree with Obama on what should happen to Bush Justice Department officials who signed off on waterboarding and other harsh interrogation tactics. Carter stopped short of calling for immediate prosecutions, but did suggest they might be appropriate in the future.

"What I would like to see is a complete examination of what did happen, the identification of any perpetrators of crimes against our own laws or against international law," he told Brown. "And then after all that's done, decide whether or not there should be any prosecutions."

The new administration has not definitely ruled out any prosecutions, but President Obama said on several occasions that "we need to focus on the future."

Campbell Brown's full interview with Former President Carter will air Monday night on CNN at 8 pm ET.

former Presdient Carter is a man with insight to the inners of the WH...and he is a man of faith...so it surprises me that he feels the photos should be released....those in the faith don't look back, but are in the present going into the future. What would be the purpose to release the photos..to enrage the citizens of the world? They are already enraged and that is why things are moving in a different direction. I think Pres. Obama is right not to release them..it serves no purpose....at least not a good one.

WELCOME BACK CARTER! Or was that Kotter? Well, that's where we're going, to the days of irresponsible government policy...can't blame this on Bush any longer!

I remember the days of the Carter presidency...the world walked on us, he cowered and apoligized to the world...inflation was rampant, high unemployment, high interest rates.....wow...just like Obama's leading us into.
By the way, for all you young libs who wet their pants with anticipation of voting for the messiah? How does a 12-14% or more mortgage rate sound to you? Car loan for 18%? Sound crazy? That's EXACTLY what I experienced in the days of CARTER....it's all about bond money, and those that buy the bonds. That's exactly where Carter led us, and Obama's doing the same thing, but worse...he's a facist and has a controlling agenda...

Printing more money like the "inexperienced one," is doing will further crush us worse than Peanut Carter did....So, libs, you really screwed the pooch by voting the "feel good, celebrity, " line......Sit back, calculate how much house or car you "can't buy," with double digit interest rates...and those of you with bad credit (the majority of OBama supporters)...you can forget it! He'll jack your rates to 20%+...wait and see! But hey, you wanted change!

I believe that the only way to the future is to deal with what these criminals did to our country over the past eight years. It is shocking to me that both Cheney and now Bush have come out to defend their illegal untruthful war profiteering war in Iraq and their criminal use of torture. They still lie, they still cheat and they would still torture if given the chance because they have faced no consequences for their crimes.
Even if Dems were involved, even if it is embarrassing and takes away from progress on other issues, this horrific criminal behavior of torturing other human beings must be punished and condemned.

President Carter should never say something like that, remember the botched attempt to rescue the 52 American hostages held in Iran.

I totally agree with President Obama by saying that showing those photos could place our soldiers in danger, to be exact mortal danger.

We did not need to torture anyone to protect our Country, the ex-FBI interrogator claimed he got viable information from Bin Laden's driver by giving him sugarless cookies.

They pulled the interrogator off, and let the torture begins.

Obama's flipflopped on many things; it shows lack of character and honesty. Carter's a weakling too, but Obama's "big show," talk coupled with his consolation prize ending is wrecking the country. The country's so fixated on the photos, that they're oblivious to all the financial slights of hand that are going on; OBama's mission is to cripple big industry that poses any threat to the presidency. Once he's captured ownership of those, he'll start dictating facist policy...what will be on TV, Radio,...what cars will be sold, for how much...how much electricity we can use.....it's all part of a big agenda, and this crap with these photos is a "watch the left hand, not the right hand..." fiasco, typical of Obama. Get a clue libs, you're wrecking the country.

Facts: Obama continues record deficit spending and bailouts. He continues secret prisons in foreign countries. He continues kissing up to the Chinese. He continues government secrecy. He continues tax cuts for the rich and subsidies for oil companies. All of these were Bush's policies originally. There is NO actual difference between Obama and Bush! He's just continuing the same policies under different names! The only difference is in the minds of liberals and neocons who continue parroting pundits. Welcome to four more years of the Bush presidency!

  25. Not Left or Right but Forward

I think the commitment by Obama was made before he had knowledge of just how bad the images were. I also think Carter misspoke when he refers to what "we've" done. America didn't commit the attrocities and horrible acts depicted in the photos, individual misguided or psychotic people who happen to be Americans or are acting under the criminal guidance of Americans did the deeds. The fear is that the Muslim world will not be able to make that distinction, and the level of hatred toward America and all Americans will go from a boil to an explosion. Goodwill takes 10 times as much effort to rebuild as it does to destroy, and the previous regime in the U.S. has made Obama's work very difficult, indeed. Releasing the photos would do nothing but make that work more difficult than it already is.

  29. The Party of NO is only “pro-life” to save a zygote now, so it can then kill the “babies” 18 years later as soldiers in an elective religious war.

Initially, I supported releasing the photos which apparently detail torture and rape as condoned by the shrub administration. I firmly believe that you cannot correct a problem until you admit to the problem and these photos would indeed do that.

However, leaked details(Huff Post) say some are very graphic beyond even the Abu Grey(sp?) photos and even depict rape. So, I now disagree with Carter and the ACLU and agree with President Obama. These photos must be so horrific that it would immediately invoke global outrage. The Pakistani's are in control only by a fingernail grasp, so showing these photos would only incite furor against the U.S. and give sympathy to America’s enemies in the Middle East, but more importantly, any of our troops that are now or may be in the future. Our enemies could make a valid claim that the "expanded interrogations" they may use were in retaliation and were only mirroring the methods used by the U.S. So, in this instance, the safety of our American troops is more important than publicly showing the atrocities committed by the bush administration.

Perhaps, these photos should only be seen by the jury any individuals brought to trial for these "advanced interrogation" methods.

administration would further add to the worlds distrust, disappointment of us.
Also, do not believe our president should lead in taking criminal actions againast Bush, Cheney etc. He wants to move ahead and

That's the beauty of being a democrat. We do not have to blindly agree with everything the representatives of the party happen to say. There are things I really like about Jimmy Carter (like his dedication to caring for needy children around the world and his spiritual base) and there are times I don't agree with Carter for a multitude of reasons (like in this instance). I don't need to trash him or attack him to disagree with him.

"It must be said, that like the breaking of a great dam, the American decent into Marxism is happening with breath taking speed, against the back drop of a passive, hapless sheeple, excuse me dear reader, I meant people.

The final collapse has come with the election of Barack Obama. His speed in the past three months has been truly impressive. His spending and money printing has been a record setting, not just in America's short history but in the world. If this keeps up for more then another year, and there is no sign that it will not, America at best will resemble the Wiemar Republic and at worst Zimbabwe."

Carter is such a doofus. He should be cheering Obama. Obama is the best thing ever for Carter's reputation... Obama is so willfully naive and cluessless that Carter will look brilliant by way of comparison and his reputation/standing would rise.

Then, Carter manages to come from behind and keep his title as the worst president in US History.

But it doesn't mean Obama isn't trying too...
    Up next:
    double digit inflation
    double digit unemployment
double digit interest rates (THIS time actually OVER 20%)

The problem with "spreading the wealth around," is that at some point, somewhere, someone, actually has to CREATE some wealth to spread.

I have to laugh when people criticize Obama for his so-called flip-flops. By all means, let's extol the virtues of presidents whose feet were embedded in cement and were incapable of reassessing and re-examing their policies as they acquired new information and situations evolved. Let's worship the leader who refused to change his mind or admit to even the most egregious errors so that he could claim that he was being "consistent". Let us adore the pure politician who points fingers and hurls criticisms when they know full well that, given the same dilemmas, they would have made the identical decisions themselves.

You know you're a liberal when: you use outdated scapegoats and tired pundit talking points about irrelevant icons just to excuse the crimes of your new celebrity icon. Face it, Obama's policies are exactly the same as the Bush administration. And yet you trashed those for the past eight years. Now that Obama is committing the same crimes, suddenly it's okay? What's more, it's somehow Carter's fault, a person who's been out of the presidency for 30 years now? And you think we live in the past? Liberals=cherry pickers!

I'm not sure if the photos should be released or not. If they show what is purported then it is obvious it would inflame our enemies. However, we should also not turn our heads the other way and bring to view the Bush Administration and their crimes. Let the photos and those who allowed this go to a court of law.

I like and respect President Carter, but he is just wrong here.

As much as I would like for Bush and his cronies to pay for what they did, prosecuting them helps no one and only hurts us as a country. And with regards to releasing the pictures, if that was done that could be very detrimental to our national security.

Finally, one thing, spartan83, President Carter actually did serve in the Navy from 1946-1953 (he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1947).

While I respect former President Carter, I respectfully disagree with his position on the release of the pictures in question. The pictures could pose the same problem for our troops overseas as Gitmo does to troops. I feel that the Obama Administration should be open and transparent with Americans, however there is a point where some things must be considered inappropriate to be put out for the general public to view. This may be the case with these pictures. Te problem is that no one trust any sitting administration to make a good decision on the matter. Well people at some point we must yield to our government and allow them to function.

Mr. Carter, I respect you.....however I will go w/ the still calmness exuded in this President, he is leading this country in the right direction.....there is a time for everything....letting the photos out, would be easy......
To all those who compare Obama to Carter, and say 4 and gone....I think you'll all be disappointed....Obama is a new kind of politician, that many Americans have been waiting for......I don't expect Obama, nor do I think it's his overall job to get everyone jobs or totally fix the economy.....only private industry can do this.....However, I do think, and know that it is his job to stabilize the economy, and begin to create an environment for growth, and protect our nation.....Which he is doing!!
America it is up to us, to go to work everyday, save money, and spend when we can...Basically live responsibly....One by one each of us will restore confidence in America, in it's markets, and in one another.....Then we will see unemployment drop, and markets surge...The answer is in the people....Obama knows this. That's why his domestic policies are geared towards the people....Shaping a new future of growth!! To all you who have tax fears, and try to perpetuate the fear of taxes.....My mind is clear and made up. Better healthcare, cleaner air, and infrastructure for a new green revolution, & better education for our children, and the children to come, I'm ready to pay for!!! Let's Go!!

I disagree with Carter that the "torture photos" should be released... What good would come from it?

But I DO AGREE with Carter that a "truth commision" should be set up and prosecutions should go forward in regards to the torture!

I am also upset that Obama wont re-examine our trade agreements like NAFTA and has yet to do all he can to stop the outsourcing of American jobs and putting a stop to corporate offshore accounts... In fact it sounds like he may let GM do just that with taxpayer money... Disgusting IMO... I'm also pretty upset that Obama has taken "single payer Health Care" off the table right now...

That said, I'm pretty much on board with everything else Obama has done or attempted to do so far... such as CC reform and trying to close Gitmo!

i am embarrassed at how ugly these republicans are that spit and spew such hate at democrats and bash obama for anything and everything that is wrong with our country. obama was elected by the majority of people simply because the republicans under g. bush ruined us across the globe. we were lied to about sadamm and went to war with a country that had nothing to do with 911 and over 4000 of our men and women soldiers were slaudered in the name of a lie. cheney and bush corrupted the system with crooks on wall street, gave millions of dollars to cheney's cronys in iraq and let the war in afganistan fall apart from neglect from bush.we were crumbling as a nation when obama was elected and he is doing all he can to fix a pure mess of years of neglect and all he gets for thanks is the republicans trying to cut his troat at every turn.i am sick of it and until the republicans can win themselves back into office they should keep their nasty mouths shut and let president obama and the voters [which is the majority] support his work. i don't think the pictures should be made public for the safety of our military but i do think bush/cheney an dany otheres responsible should be prosecuted for the war crimes they commited. the republicans then will be brought to their knees and hopefully this blite on our nation will end.

    To Peter E:
Not only did Reagan trade weapons in exchange for hostages but he also sold them weapons parts. Ollie North (Fox News "hero") diverted the funds from those sales to contra rebels in Nicaragua - called them "Freedom Fighters."

"Proud Member..Party of No" must not recall how much money Reagan printed to cover his borrow and spend policies. The Party of No doesn't like "tax and spend" policies (which is how government pays for the services the people demand) so they borrow and borrow and borrow, then leave it to the Democrats to try to dig us out of the hole they dug.

This is a tough subject, but I believe the President is listening to his military advisers on this issue and he is right. While we have boots on the ground, the release of those photographs will only incite additional violence against our service members.

I don't accept Obama's explaination, for one – the troops and our leaders are the people who put the rest of the troops in harms way by engaging in this behaviour – NOT the release of the photos.

Second, those who support "torture" as acceptable means of obtaining information, wont argue that by torturing we are "breeding more terrorism and hate" (which is the arguement for shutting down quantanamo) then how can releasing photo's of us "torturing" or at least humiliating detainee's put our troops in harms way?

I think Obama probably has a good feeling that the courts are going to authorize the release of these photo's – and so he tried to appear in the middle on this one, appeasing the right by "protecting" the jerks that are amongst our armed forces (on all levels)...and in the end, what Obama KNOWS should happen, will happen...he'll just go down as looking like the guy who "tried" to be supportive of our armed forces.

It's a tough move to make, because he loses points with me on the "transparency" he's promised us, that so far hasnt really showed up, anywhere.

Transparency is my biggest single disappointment with Obama.

With all due respect to President Carter, he should focus on building homes for Habitat for Humanity. Mr. Carter new more about peanut farming than he did about being the President of the United States. The interests rates we experienced during the Carter Years were far worse than the current national banking and home mortgage crisis. I believe that history will show that Barack Obama has accomplished more in 130 days, than all of the previous six presidents combined, over a similar period of time. Washigton needs to get to work, something I know is a new thought for most members of the Congress and Senate.

If we're truly a nation of laws and we preach this to the rest of the world then why are we afraid to show them that we walk the walk. There is absolutely No Need to exhibit photos to the World of
unpleasant actions by the U.S. Military that were documented in the past 10 years.

Such photographs are only for Voyeurs and do not pertain to the World today. Exhibits of such abhorent material will certainly bring harm and damage to our present Military and place their lives at risk.

The United States cannot risk lives to appease a few absurd and ridiculous people such as Jimmy Carter.

There should be no criminal prosecutions whatsoever to any person, military or civilian.

Obama is correct to focus on the future and not the past.

Yeah, why go back and attempt to understand the past; we just want to start the game of deception, corruption, secrecy from step one as we move FORWARD: I’m sure the rest of the world will completely ignore all our atrocities in our past… NEW GAME: P-K4!

Why didn’t we do the same with Germany? Why did we every have those useless, bothersome and very, very messy and expensive investigations and the Nuremberg Trials?

Oh, I know: because we wanted the entire WORLD to know what was done, who did it, why they did it… so it would NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN!

Often in life, you must look at and come to grips with the PAST, simply to have the ability to move FORWARD!

I do not feel remorse for the torture of ANY murderer, what you've done is irreversible. May god have mercy on your soul cause I have none for you. BUT enemy combatants SHOULD receive quarter and just treatment. Any one tortured out of sheer fun is a victim, yet I do not believe the release of photos depicting torture will do our country as a whole any good. The ACLU and all these other FOR THE PEOPLE organizations need to shut their mouths. They're not based over in Afghanistan or Iraq, they do not have to fear the repercussions of the release of these photos. All they do is endanger the already endangered solider.

Apallogizing for things we shouldn't have had too, isolationism, etc. We're lucky we're not speaking Russian or Chinese now. Take a look at him compared to Obama and its scary how close they are. Evidence of endemic pro-bama-ganda mounts: During his first two months in office, Bill Clinton benefited from the 27% of news stories about him that were positive or praising in tone. George W. Bush dealt with a press only slightly less enamored of him: 22% of stories about him were positive.

But along comes barack obama and the press cannot CONTROL themselves. Fully 44% of the stories about obama are positive in tone, AND there are twice as many stories about obama’s personal life. We’re not talking about blogs or new media websites. We’re talking about PBS, NBC, The New York Times, Washington Post, etc. Twice as many positive stories and twice as many about his personal life.

Lets get our house in order economically and put back the restrictions and regulations along with the ethics and morals that have long been missing in our pursuit of the all mighty dollar for only selective individuals. The Obama Administration should do one of two things: Release the photos OR Indict those responsible for endorsing/creating the torture program(s). If the U.S. does neither the world sees a country of hypocrites who always talk about notions and ideas such as 'the rule of law,' and 'civility' when we talk about why the U.S. is such a great place and why we need to intercede in other countries when we see 'evil', but when it is the U.S. who perpetrates the evil then we turn a blind eye and just say 'it won't happen again.'
Releasing the photos will only incite those who are ALREADY extremist, but it may show moderates that the U.S. IS actually confronting our ugly past and moving forward.

"I don't agree with him, but I certainly don't criticize him for making that decision." That's too passive! First of all, Carter dumped Hillary, to

I agree that the pictures should not be released. It's too dangerous for our soldiers now. As far as prosecutions go. They should look up the chain of command and not use the troops as scapegoats. If the troops were torturing prisoners they were probably under orders from top brass. If they were really rogue soldiers, (it's hard to believe that there's that many) then the top brass needs to prosecuted for negligence and failure to maintain command.

The republicans know thatthe trick to good propaganda is to repeat the same thing over and over from a number of different directions with everyone speaking on message. It works. That is why a number of people who don't have the ability to think for themselves believe that Carter was the worst president and Reagan was great somehow. Neither has any basis in fact. This past election the constant repetition of lies was seen in the light of day because on the internet you can check facts and non-corporate media can speak. That is why the lies of the right were exposed. The problem is when Carter was being swiftboated and Reagan crowned you had no way of testing truth. We need to rethink a lot of what we were taught by the foxy right now that we have seen in the light of day that the emperor has no clothes.

Jimmy Carter worst president ever? Not even close. I would put him somewhere in the middle. The guy did more for peace in the mideast than anyone before or since. As for the horrible economic problems of the '70's, That had more to do with the Arab oil embargo and the de-industrialization of America than Carter's domestic policies. I think where Carter failed was in not being proactive to address these problems. Also the guy was right about foreign oil dependency but nobody listened. All in all, I'd say he was a mediocre president, but I respect him because he is one of the few who actually cares about poor people. Have a nice day!

I know a lot of the folks on blogs throw around incendiary terms as they are doing it basically anonymously and without accountability, but can we really start to tone it down a bit on the rhetoric and have more civil debates? Some of the things I see on CNN's blogs are just ridiculous assertions with no basis in fact and simply stir some people up on both sides of the aisle. We need to all be smarter than this and have civil, logical debates.

No matter what your opinion of Obama's domestic policy is, he is better at foreign policy, so I trust his judgment. Showing pictures of more heinous acts of torture will incite more violence–everyone knows you can't put a fire out with gasoline–Obama is right on this one.

As far as his stance with China, he needs to tread lightly – or China will call their debts in. I don't feel like handing global economic dominance over to a communist country. Obama will act with China accordingly when the time is right and we have more leverage. We don't have leverage now because Bush sold us out.

President Carter has never shed blood for his country. That is why he doesnt care about the consequences to our soilders.
    -------------------------------–

President Carter is a graduate of the USNA, he has served his nation in the US Navy as an active duty Naval Officier and completed his serve obligations to his nation. As such President Carter has shown nothing but concern for the men and woman of the mlitary and gone out of his way to insure that they have not been used in a wasteful fashion. Here is something for you to reflect upon, "War is an extension of diplomacy, when all else fails." To put in layman terms war is a result of diplomatic failure of an adminstration, not something to strive for or desire, but then again had you ever served in war or peace you might understand that.

What's to be gained by showing pictures. Our first priority should be our military men and women, not those that would harm them. And just how much respect did we get around the world when weak Carter was in office? Carter might be a kind hearted man but never was Presidential material. I believe Carter thinks all people are good. He lives in La La Land.

To those of you complaining about interest rates and how what we have now is better, the game isn't over. High interest rates will be returning in the not too distant future. And the root cause won't be Obama. The foundations of that were laid well before he came into office. His administration's role in that unfolding will amount to having avoided a severe depression and not cut back on the huge deficits that we've been running for the last half dozen years....

Jimmy Carter is a decent man and has a right to his opinion.

Obama did not release the pictures because he thought there may be a backlash towards American troops who are still over there. I respect that opinion. I ,also think Cheney, in particular should be brought up on charges and given the maximum penalty for his crimes. But, I understand why they are not focusing on this as well.

I don't agree with everything that President Obama does. ( His pick for education was very status quo and continues the problems that the Bush Administration began. We need to get rid of Nochild left behind for good. It's teaching based on test scores only and it is very negative for teachers and children) . In any case, I still think he is the best president that I have seen in my lifetime. He does have the people's interests at heart. He also has put protections in for the enivroment and for wildlife- something which is very important at this critical stage in the Earth's history.

If we would have done whatr Jimmy Carter suggested back in the 70's like Brazil did, we would have been free of foreign oil dependence 5 years ago, like Brazil did, but enough about Carter's unheeded wisdom...

...Only diddo-heads agree with everything the drug-addled gas bag says, for the rest of us smart people, we don't agree with everything Obama says or does all the time, heck I don't agree with my father sll the time, but I do agree with a lot of Obama policies. So does most of the country and the world...

All of you saying you want the pictures released of our troops torturing Gitmo prisoners, well all I can say is "What is your problem"? Do you realize that the terrorists we are fighting don't give a rats a$$ about the Geneva Conventions that we signed. They are laughing at us all over the country because all you all want to do is bury your own soldiers!!! How dare you all want to possibly put them in more of harms way? The terrorists don't torture. They just kill! Remember Daniel Pearl? They cut his head off with a knife on live tv. And you all are upset because we poured water on some terrorists face? You all are the true domestic terrorists.

If Bush and Cheney are let off the hook for torture, it leaves the door open for the next bunch of little Hitlers to take it to the next level. Do you want to be party to rape and torture of children? Let them off the hook and you're as bad as the Germans who looked the other way during the Holocaust. I repudiate what Bush and Cheney have perpetrated in the name of America. I want them brought to justice! Obama is wrong for dawdling and equivocating.

This is a non-issue. Did people really think President Obama would always follow the Democrat's position on everything? The Democrats tend to be divided on several issues, which creates open debate within the party. This is so much better than the lock-step GOP, always following whatever Fox News, right-wing talk radio hosts or big business tells them to do.

As usual, Carter is completely right. The photos should be released. Is anyone here actually naive enough to think that the terrorists won't eventually get their hands on the photos?

Witholding them just feeds the imaginations of those that hate us and makes Obama look like another Bush (in their eyes at least). Sometimes, it's best to simply come clean. Release the photos and say "Horrible things were done by the previous administration. We condemn this and it will not happen under this administration".

The US torturing muslim prisoners was the biggest help to terrorist recruitment ever. The best we can do now is simply minimize the damage.

That being said I am somewhat dissappointed in things not being fixed from the bottom up. Still throwing money away at the top. There have been some great ideas out here but to simple for the beltway to get I guess. My favorite, Give every American over 50 still in the work force (40 million) 1 million dollars, 40 million job openings, must buy a new home or pay off existing mortgage (financial market infused with cash) must buy a new American made car (auto industry fixed). I am just an average person not an economist but I can not see a down side to this. Much cheaper than the billions being thrown away to the top. Economy fixed from the bottom up as promised.

That said, at some point they should be released, but in the distant future. We need to put this war BEHIND us as soon as possible. It was one that should never have been fought, with catastrophic results in so many ways. Jimmy Carter's desire for full transparency is a virtuous idea – but not yet.

Now try listening, with an open mind, to the truth. The "blite" (blight) on this nation will not end unless enough of us turn back to God (the true God of the Holy Bible) and vote into office men with the knowledge of right and wrong – courageous men who recognize evil, when it rears it's ugly head, and have the wisdom to take a stand and fight against it. Men who will make decisions based on God's precepts and not just whatever is P.C. Not fools that believe man is born with innate goodness and can use diplomacy in every situation. As the scripture says, there is "a time for war". There will be wars until Christ returns because there will be men who are courageous enough to stand and fight against evil in order to protect their children from deranged monsters like Hitler, Pol Pot, Stalin,Ahmadinejad, and Saddam Hussein, to name a few. You don't seem to have much knowledged about World history and I wonder if that is because you attended government schools. The dumbing down of America is why Obama

how on earth could anyone please all of the people all of the time? never gonna happen in our political system.

not releasing these photos is not keeping any additional information from the world or from ourselves. we already have seen the images and the truth was revealed. the argument that additional photos would in a sense prevent us from repeating history by knowing what has happened (which is the only halfway productive reason I've seen for releasing them) seems defunct. it caused a hoopla the first time photos were released, and it will cause a hoopla if these are released, and for no apparent gain. And potentially a lot of harm. the decision actually seems pretty logical to me...

However, I agree with Mr. Carter that we should go forward with a complete investigation, and if the facts show any laws were broken, the perpetrators should be prosecuted. If they do not, then the pictures will do nothing to stop this from happening again – and they will inflame an already violent hatred toward the U.S. There are indications that some photographs depict rape – and if that is the case, those responsible should be prosecuted under the laws of the country where the offenses took place. This sort of thing is in a different category – and if anyone says its like wterboarding, or that there is ANY ambiguity regarding the illegality of rape as a means of interrogation, they are certifiably insane.

Why are you talking with Jimmy Carter? He was by far the worst president we have had in this era. Obama may be second only to him!

I'm not sure what these idiots have done with their memories but Jimmy Carter is a great man and was a great President. He's absolutely right on this one. He was a peacemaker and the only President in my lifetime with the cojones to stand up to big business and do what was right for the people of this country and of the world! I guess these days that makes you an object of ridicule and derision. You have to be a fascist idiot like Bush-Cheney and the great God Reagan (whose nonsensical "trickle down" Reaganomics" is responsible for the world economic meltdown we're now seeing) to be appreciated these days! How quicky and how far we've fallen from intelligence and decency!

There are times when it is not worth telling the whole story, or in this instance, showing the pictures. The Pres. knows what he is doing. You can't un-ring a bell. Best to let the mood of the world dictate when to let those pics come out.
Pres. Carter is right to want the pics to come out but Pres. Obama is right to wait on the perfect timing to do so. Perhaps when the economic engine of the world starts to move for the regular people again it will be a good time to show the world what we would do to protect this Nation.

JOSEPH BUTTACAVOLI says he'd "nuke these people and be done with it."

Exactly which people would you nuke? The perpetrators of 9/11 who are hiding along the Afghan-Pakistan border? (Don't forget, Pakistan has nuclear weapons, too.)

And how would you control the fallout from that nuke attack as it drifts around the world?

Carter is an embarrassment to our country (wrong all the time and sympathizer to our enemies). United States lost its image during his administration and we lost one of our best allies (IRAN) because of his human right preaching to Shah. Soviets invaded Afghanistan, chaos in Lebanon and so on......

President Carter was one of the best President ever. If it was not for the Congress and the ofter House he would have done much more to improve the status of America.. for the rescue you nuts do not understand that a MAJOR SAND STORM is what messed up the rescue.. YES check out you History and you will know that instead of listening to people you want to blame and SAND STORM on the President's rescue mission. Carter was a BLESSING to America but because he was not liked and was not a good old boy they wanted to paint a different picture of him. May God continue to bless you Mr. Carter for being a real human being and a Great President

Carter was one of the worst President's in recent memory . His foreign policy was, quite simply put, a disatster so no wonder he would choose to go in a direction that would damage the United States and put our tropps, as well as every American, in danger. I do believe it is time for his to sit down and be quiet. Obama has made an approproiate decision here to protect America and its troops. Carter and the other left-wing liberals loons are out of bounds on this.

I am a lifelong Dem but Carter is sad. I just came back from a trip to Venezuela to visit my wife's family and was reminded how Carter helped Chavez 4 years ago approving the election vote with a signature of confidence. Funny how the oppo in Venezuela has pictures of Carter and Chavistas fishing off of the coast of Portugal right before he singed off on those elections. Carter should just go away.

Even though I believe these photos should be released (Some are already trickling out over the internet), I strongly believe that if Carter has something to say to Obama, he should pick up the phone and call him directly.

It is tacky and rude for him to criticize a sitting president who is a fellow Dem. He is just stirring a pot. Now, Dick Cheney oversteps 'rude and tacky'. He is covering up and deflecting attention on criminal behavior.

Liberal Progressive Democrats- Be proud that you are an American. Our CIA and former President did what was neccessary to protect this great Country. 1) There have been no further terrorist attacks since Sep 11, 2009. Who deserves the credit?

For everyone out there who thinks terrorists should be treated with anything less than common dignity must have forgotten the saying, "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind". Enemies or not, all people deserve respect and if we ever reach the point when we hurt others, we become no better than them.

Releasing the photos will only incite those who are already extremists. We should release the photos and indict those from the Bush Administration responsible for making torture a part of U.S. policy. They have shamed our nation. Unless we confront the evils within our own country we are hypocrites when we impose our will on other countries.

This guy was a real success as President. Thanks to him and his great response to the Iran hostage crisis, we have a terrorist state. As MacArthur said"Old soldiers don't die, they just fade away.." Why can't the same thing be said for politicians of a bygone era? He shouldn't comment on the present occupant of the White House. The present occupant, ehether you disagree or agree with him, has a sense of direction and agenda.

Carter's presidency had the feeling akin to a car being out of control.

You folks are seeing things that aren't there. Here is the reality.

    1) Carter, one of our best Presidents. Time will tell. Certainly compared to GW.
    2) Obama, too soon to tell, but things look great for this to be an eight year period of which we will all be proud.
    3) Both of them will get what they want, re the torture photos and justice.
    4) President Obama does not want to gratuitously release photos which will be released under court order when AG Holder decides to investigate.
    5) President Obama does not want to politicize the Justice Dept by telling Holder what to do, but the writing is on the wall.
    6) Within a year of taking office, AG Holder will decide that an investigation is necessary; he will secure all evidence, including said photos; a grand jury will sit and deliberate on the evidence; trials wil begin in late 2010; finally, near the end of President Obama's first term, the evidence (including photos) will become public.

I can wait for it to unfold. Be patient.

    Mississippi Mike:

A good rule of thumb with Carter is to listen to his advice and do the exact opposite. I can't think of a single thing he's ever done that's had a beneficial result, no reason to believe he will start now.

    Dear Mississippi Mike,

President Carter won the Noble Peace Prize. Have a good day.

Did President Clinton incite or encourage Sep 11th terrorist attacks, by not re acting or defending this great Country after 1993 World trade Center attack, South African Embassy Bombings, Somalia Attack, US Cole attacks, etc? Perhaps if America under the proper leadership reacted, Sep 11 would never have taken place?

And anyone who things the religious right aren't terrorists within our own midst didn't see the news about the abortion doctor who was just MURDERED in his own CHURCH.

The whole point is you can NOT operate from a Cheney-like attitude that the ends justify the means or you throw out rule of law and decency and become what you're trying to stop.

This idiot just MURDERED a man because he believes in - the sanctity of all life. This would be humorous if it weren't for the horrific pain and suffering the man has just brought on the doctor's family and town.

Jultifying the murder of people to support your cause makes you EXACTLY like the Taliban and al Quada.

    Think about it, religious zealots.

I don't think the public NEEDS to see the photos to understand the implications

The only torture photos that would interest me would be photos of people like Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, George Bush, and Rumsfeld being torture simply for the sake of being tortured

After all they did to kill so many of our young, for a false war

After all they did to drag this country into the quagmire that now exists

The real terrorists are here, in our own back yards, and on CNN almost daily, with their treasonist verbiage ...

In the next year or so we'll be experiencing the inflation of the Carter years too. It's going to hurt more than the recession. I'm not really a fan of either President. There are just some things that gov't should leave alone and these men don't seem to pick up on that.

3 Trillion Dollars in Iraq by the end of the Bush term. 75% of it going to the government of Iraq or reconstruction of the country(not better armor or weapons). Is everyone aware that Iraq has a budget surplus and that is with their oil production at or about 50% capacity.

Before any Neo-Cons talk about 20 billion to Chrysler/GM I'd like someone to explain that number before complaining about Obama.
