From

(CNN) - Senator Tom Coburn says he's running for re-election next year.

The conservative Republican from Oklahoma, who's become a crusader against government earmark spending, made his announcement at a news conference in Tulsa.

"I have made a decision that I will seek a second and final term in the U.S. Senate," announced Coburn.

He was adamant that this will be his last re-election effort, saying "when I say final term, it mean final term. There will be no other term after this."

Coburn, who's also a doctor, was first elected to the Senate in 2004, defeating Democrat Brad Carson by 12 points.

Oklahoma is heavily dominated by Republicans. John McCain won the state by 30 points in last November's presidential election. Political analysts say Coburn is heavily favored to win re-election.

"The Sooner state has turned into one of the most reliable bastions of conservatism, and this is one state where Republicans are in ascendant," says Stuart Rothenberg, editor and publisher of the non-partisan Rothenberg Political Report.

Coburn was elected to the House of Representatives as part of then House Speaker Newt Gingrich's "Republican Revolution." He served three terms in the House from 1995 to 2001.

please stop calling Oklahoman's dumb and imbred, please just call them brainwashed by the christian right and the lied to by the rich backers. Again democrats exist here and the Governor is Democrat so don't judge. I don't roll my eyes at California for electing an Republican actor to head their state.

JT   June 1st, 2009 3:18 pm ET

Sure – go ahead & run. You don't have a chance in hello to make it. But be our guest, waste the GOP's money and make what remains of the GOP support (<20%) look like the obsolete relics they are. You have zero chance of winning. Zero.

Oklahoma is a conservative state but there are democrats and liberals here, that's pretty closed minded of you to say and a reason why republicans grasp on to the elitist label. Open your mind, I dislike Coburn too but don't insult an entire state of proud people, remember broad generalizations are never good. Also very nice typo, luckily I'm dumb enough to understand it.

Why not make THIS term his last? This guy has done nothing with his Senate career. Just another GOP religious zealot who believes his was is the only way.

Had It   June 1st, 2009 2:26 pm ET

And no doubt the ignorant red-necks of that state will send him to DC again. He'll have tax-payer provided health care and a nice retirement income (provided by us) for the rest of his life.

Disgusting.

For once in your life, give the country something useful. Allow us, and fellow Oklahoman T. (the "T" is for "titanic amounts of money") Boone Pickens to harvest all of the hot air you have been pumping into the atmosphere over the years to provide power to all of the buildings in downtown Tulsa. Here, just breathe into this...

Talk to Romney about his putting the Republican party in jeopardy. The more he tries to put Obama down, the more he slaps himself (Romney) in the face. You have leverage here, Mr. Coburn. Do as your heart desires re running one more term.

Oklahoma ought to be ashamed of itself for having two of the worst senators ever serving simultaneously. Inhofe and Coburn are sick, sick jokes,

AZBY   June 1st, 2009 2:02 pm ET

Senator Coburn's politics are about gun and abortion. These issues do not help politics in general but politics on fear.

Did Mit take over from W? We recently replaced W., the cheerleader of doom and fear. Now here comes Mit as W's replacement.
Please be aware that Mid did not run for re-election as Gov. of Mass. because he knew that his campain would be a waste of his money, in short he had no chance of being Gov. of Mass. after his first term.

If that's true it would then be the only state where Republicans are in "ascendant" (SP.!)

Regarding Politico's article on AC declining ratings: John Klein, President of CNN must really think people are stupid by claiming that they are objective and try to present high quality journalism. Is that why they have that GOP cheerleader John King on for 6 hours on Sunday and then as a replacement when AC is out? They are a conservative network and their anchors repeat the GOP talking points every day: Wolf Blitzer, Lou Dobbs, AC, Campbell Brown, Candy Crowley, Leslie Sanchez, Gloria Bolger, etc. I cannot believe John King is quoted as saying that CNN is the network that will be called on to cover world news. That is the problem, they do not cover world current events. They only focus on petty issues: Did the President spend the taxpayers' money by taking Michelle to NYC? Racist charges by GOP members against Sotomayor? This network's quality has gone so low that I can no longer watch it. At one time, I would watch CNN as long as I was awake. I am now a loyal fan of Keith Olbermann and MSNBC (expect for Joe S).

Just goes to show what a poor education system Oklahoma has. Keep them dumb and inbred, and they will always vote for republicans.
