You are either really stupid or really, really stupid.

In the rural area of PA. where I was born and raised there were several textile mills and a large crane manufacuterer where my father has worked for almost 40 years.

Due to Reagan's polocies the textiles mills all closed. My father's employer experienced it's worse downturn in their history, their best was under Bill Clinton. I think a man with 40 years there would know. The unemployment offices in the 80's here were so busy that the lines were stretched out the door. My father was only working 1 week a month and my mother lost her job as did my grandfather. It was only under pres. clinton did we finally see some recovery

I dare you to tell me this did not happen.

Fortytude   June 2nd, 2009 2:52 pm ET

Reagan won 49 out of 50 states in his re-election as President. I would say that the American people approved of Reagan's policies. The problem now, is you have people on this board who are probably too young to remember Reagan and are reading liberal blogs and textbooks to get their information. The fact remains though, that he was a very popular President with both parties and it just drives liberals crazy. Don't believe me? Read the posts on this site.

-------

Reagan was a napping jelly bean eater. He won by a big margin because of who the Dems ran against him and people personally liked him. They also personally liked Bush. Its says nothing of his policies of which you are holding the bag for right now.

Jefe   June 2nd, 2009 2:50 pm ET

I don't know why modern-day Neoconservatives consider Reagan to be one of them. Reagan wanted diminished federal government and more power to the states. It didn't work out that way, but it was his philosophy. Neoconservatives instead became obsessed with extremely consolidated Federal Executive Branch power and control over private lives. Modern-day Republicans (save for the very few Conservatives remaining), are quite the opposite of President Reagan.

wagon, if you remember your history (you have to wait a generation or two before changing it), Reagan did cut the tax but only for the rich and toke away lot of tax break from the mid-class, so the net effect was raising tax on the middle class with promises of "wait and it will trickle down" while rich plundered.

Everyone hears so-called facts from other people, and them regurgitate them without even checking on their validity (or the sanity from whence they came.) This goes for both Reagen supporters and bashers. He def did his part in ending the cold war, but I do have to say that the conservatives praise the guy for the tax cuts and all that jazz, when the truth is, he did exactly what GW did. The economy had a short period of revival after the upper-class tax cuts, but shortly after, began on a crash course. YOU CANT CUT TAXES AND SPEND!!!!!!!! The man wanted to cut taxes and blow up defense spending. He is the reason why George HW had to increase taxes and go back on his word. And unemployment was not down at the end of his terms, it actually had increased since he had started, the poverty level in the country rose, and the gap between the upper class and lower class widened more than ever. The man catered to racist Southerners, and lets not forget Iran-Contra, or did he have nothing to do with that???? They love the guy because he finally gave the R's a voice. They could finally say that the government was the problem and not their ideas........or lack thereof.

Mrs. Reagan obviously hasn't read Obama's Audacity of Hope book. He makes it clear he is not much of a Reagan fan. I used to like Reagan, but I'm starting to change my mind too. Policies that make the rich richer and poor poorer is not a long term sustainable strategy.

What's amazing to me is that they call President Obama a rock star, they criticize Hollywood for fawning over him. Yet they reveranced a "B' rated movie star (Ronald Reagan). Hob nobbed with Hollywood stars constantly, but now that Hollywood is riding the Obama locomotive, it's a problem.

If Ronald Reagan had been 1/4 of the man Mr. Obama is; he should consider himself lucky. The man was a devil! You reap what you sow before you leave this earth . . . . and I must say . . .Truly he reaped!

Under orders from Reagan and Bush he had been supplying Bin Laden arms, ammunition and money to fight Russia in Afghanistan with gorilla war tactics. They cut him off when the Iran-Contra affair became world known. This created a monster as far as the U.S. was concerned. Wake up America. The same thing happened in NAM. BTW it was Reagan lowering that upper income people tax bracket that trippled the national debt of the US.

BTW should I keep going?

BTW it was when Reagan was in office that the unions started to break up making it impossible to raise a family on a single income, thus having both parents works, thus having the parents not spend more time with their kids, thus having a whole generation of Americans having lower grade and the academic standards keepgetting lowered to match "expectations." Fact: Ronald Reagan walked into high inflation when he got into office.....Cutting taxes helped this......However he also raised taxes 6 times....

Fact: Obama walked into a Depression which is deflation/implosion.....He had to deficit spend in the short term to replace the ususal consumer spending.....

Fact: FDR couldn't have been the worst President ever, as Americans voted for him for 4 terms straight...he died in office, and was repalced by H. Truman......FDR almost did 16 years in the WH.....So either he was the worst or we're saying Americans were stupid to vote for him....The 22nd Amendment was added to the constitution so that Presidents could only serve 2 terms....to make the executive branch fair & balanced......

To: republican scum scum

A quote by the late Dr. Adrian Rogers, 1931-2005

"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody, anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any Nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."

In other words, GET A JOB and quit living off the working Republicans. Republicans have money because we are CONSERVATIVE. Democrats like to spend other peoples money. LIBERAL = spend, spend, spend and live off government programs which are funded by the working Republicans.

Its funny how the people who only spend their own money love Reagan, and the ungrateful lib takers who spend the money of the people they hate spew lie ridden hatrid toward the best president of the last 100 years.

You know, if lib would spend half the energy they do on hating on those who have more wealth than they do or have more morals and values than they do and use that energy on getting skills or working hard, they could become one of the evil self efficiant Americans who pay for the hateful lib to servive and spew their lack of class, integrity, decency, and values on America.

Lib truly thinks that taking is compassionate, and that hating on everyone is tolerance. Seems charecter truly is the biggest factor in which ideology we support. No wonder so many libs are atheists, would you want to answer before god after living a lib life?

All I can say is... WOW.

If the vile comments from BOTH the left and the right on this topic is any reflection of the American citizenry whatsoever, I really am saddened for my country.

Party politics, as Thomas Jefferson mentioned, brings out the very worst of humanity.

Oh the Reagan haters. It's funny to watch you working on your heart attacks while thinking about The Gipper. BTW – Reagan lowered the top marginal tax rates to 28% from 70%. The top rates are 25% higher (35% vs. 28%) than they were under Reagan. The economic record for Reagan is – inflation down, unemployment down, taxes down, GDP up, deficits up. Those are the facts. While the last is disappointing, Reagan's deficits will be nothing compared to Obama's.

indiana voter   June 2nd, 2009 12:59 pm ET

Reagan won 49 out of 50 states in his re-election as President. I would say that the American people approved of Reagan's policies. The problem now, is you have people on this board who are probably too young to remember Reagan and are reading liberal blogs and textbooks to get their information. The fact remains though, that he was a very popular President with both parties and it just drives liberals crazy. Don't believe me? Read the posts on this site.

Oh, please...

This is about Nance Reagan simply coming to the White House for a luncheon.

You would think from the commits that we should call out the troops, lower the flag, and say 3 Hail Marys!!! Give it up...get a life ...and move on.

I certainly was not a fan, but, enough. Let the two First Ladies have a wonderful lunch together. And, I hope she will enjoy the ceremony at the Capital. I can thank President Reagan for helping to get the "Wall" down, and that's good enough for me to have his statue in the Capital!

Reagan gave America back its pride. When he took office our economy was decimated. Military morale was at a low point. Russia was a very real cold-war threat.

You may not agree with his policies but he made decisions, explained himself to the american people and, overall, the people responded.

About the silliness with the teleprompter... How does it hurt anything? He delivers the message that his administration put together.

I dont make the broad assumption that the voting public is composed of fools who are simply "tricked" into believing in a policy based on a flashy presentation and a few sound bites.

If the use of a teleprompter makes such a tremendous difference in how his policy is perceived then maybe its use should be expanded. Lets give teachers, professors, salespeople, managers and everyone that deals with the public a teleprompter!

Not making this up.

Reading some of the comments here shows us exactly why we are having the problems that we do. Too many people only care about their own agenda. Liberals can't admit that Regan was actually a pretty good President. As someone who did not like him much when he was in office, in retrospect, I can see that his foreign policy positions were very good. Yes, he wasn't great on the economy, but he didn't tank it either. In one conservatives comments, FDR is listed as one of the worst Presidents ever. Really!! He only got us thru the worst depression ever, and the worst war in the history of the world. But you could never admit that. At least you concede that Bush Jr. was horrible. Then there is the poster who states that Clinton started trade with China. Do a little research. It was actually your own Tricky Dick Nixon who went to China and paved the way for trade with China. I happen to think he was absolutely right in doing this. Some of you people need to start actually thinking for yourself.

Of course one of the saddest parts of Reagan's legacy besides trading arms to Iran for hostages, was that he cut and ran from Lebanon shortly after our Marines were killed there by terrorists. That made the United States look weak and encouraged generations of new terrorists to continue strike at the US as they did when they saw another weak Republican President on 9/11.

The liberals on this board are just angry because Reagan was the great President that they can only hope Obama can be. Reagan proved that the only way out of financial ruin is the free market. Let people keep their money and let them decide how to spend it. Cut taxes, cut spending and the economy will prosper. You can't expect to endlessly spend money that you don't have and expect the economy to recover.

It is the exact opposite of what Obama is doing right now. When he is thrown out of office in 2012, we will know that Reagan was right.

Reagan came in and took over a country that was almost in ruins thanks to 4 years of Jimmy Carter. The man who had no backbone, led to skyrocketing inflation and interest rates, and made America less safe. Reagan put AMERICA first, he didn't back down, and cared for the people instead of the unions.

The Republican president who takes office in 2013 will draw a lot of comparisons to Reagan. Because he or she too will be taking over an America that will have been decimated, this time by the false prophet known as Obama.

Reagan did away with everything that was helping people and most of the after school programs that allowed families to invest into things like, art, music classes, programs that kept children busy. President Clinton was the only President in my live time that lift a surplus when he lift the White House, 283 billion dollar and that thief Bush and his criminals ran through that in know time.

I'd suggest that you look at ANY politician, newscaster, or public figure when they give a speech. They ALL use teleprompters.
______________________________________________________
Wrong, they were not used durring every press conference by any President before Obama. While the press is asking questions his staff is feeding him talking points? It makes you wonder if this guy has a pure thought of his own?

James, Phoenix AZ   June 2nd, 2009 11:47 am ET

Next to President Reagan's statue, how about a memorial to the hundreds of thousands of Iranians killed by weapons that Pres. Reagan sent to Saddam Hussein to fight the Iran/Iraq War?

Ouch, reality hurts.

Chris D.   June 2nd, 2009 11:47 am ET

Wow.....this is bipartisanship at it's best.....the champion of conservatism, being celebrated by the champion of progressivism.......
Does anyone ever notice that when Presidents' leave office they often become civil colleagues though they share differing ideologies? I.e. Clinton, Bush? I guess it's due to the fact that the Presidency remains the smallest club in America. Only a few have walked where they've walked.
America this should show us that conservatives and liberals/progressives need to form common ground on the issues.

Maryann Rose   June 2nd, 2009 11:46 am ET

Anderson's mom is Gloria Vanderbilt. I'm not sure why CNN is showing Nancy Reagan with him. Is he having lunch with Michelle also?

:)

Mike   June 2nd, 2009 11:46 am ET

If only other democrats and republicans would be so civil.

phoenix86   June 2nd, 2009 11:46 am ET

I realize reading the liberal bloggers here that liberals are apparently unable to learn, study or even remember anything that happened more than 2 or 3 days ago. That explains better than anything why they insist on repeating past mistakes.

It's either that or they are suffering from some genetic form of ingrained stupidity. If so, I fully support abortion for any liberal, as well as euthanasia or perhaps pyschiatric incarceration. It seems very necessary for the greater good.

Dan   June 2nd, 2009 11:46 am ET

It's a pity you hate filled liberal robots can't show as much class as President Obama and the first lady.

Dave   June 2nd, 2009 11:45 am ET

Never was a big fan of Nancy and Ron, but I do hope she has a nice visit and enjoys the statue.

Proud DHS radical   June 2nd, 2009 11:44 am ET

Where would Obama be?...Must be on another road trip on the taxpayer's dime.

JD   June 2nd, 2009 11:42 am ET

I'm left wing but always liked that lady. Best wishes and have fun, Mrs. Reagan!

Sam I Am   June 2nd, 2009 11:41 am ET

Nancy and Ron brought a lot of class to the White House in their day, and helped a hurting nation recover. They faced conflicts overseas and financial crises at home. Sound familiar? I'm sure Nancy and the Obamas have a lot in common, and a lot to talk about.

On a side note, for those of you who cannot let the teleprompter thing go, I'd suggest that you look at ANY politician, newscaster, or public figure when they give a speech. They ALL use teleprompters. The idea of a telepromter is so that you can read the speech you and your team wrote without constantly looking down at the lectern. I for one think it's refreshing that the president actually looks up from his notes, and reads his speeches in a manner that doesn't sound like he's reading his fourth grade essay on what he did on summer vacation. Perhaps, had Bush been able to read at normal adult speed, he could have used telepromters too.

Richard L   June 2nd, 2009 11:40 am ET

Nancy will probably thank President Obama for his support of stem cell research which might be able to eventually save people who are like Ronald Reagan was. Of course, Bush opposed it.

ken   June 2nd, 2009 11:40 am ET

Sometimes don't understand, is this anderson coopers mother?

Ronald Reagan Law   June 2nd, 2009 11:39 am ET

There will be an unveiling of a Ronald Reagan law (statute)?

daniel arnaut   June 2nd, 2009 11:38 am ET

Gottta marvel at the capacity of the haters to conjure up ugly, despicable, loathsome thoughts even about a meeting between two First Ladies.

S Callahan   June 2nd, 2009 11:38 am ET

Good for Nancy to be out and about....she can give some wise advice to First Lady Obama....
She is a persistent bugger...guess she has forgiven the Obama family for not inviting her to the stem cell announcement.

bill b. from Stratford,Ct   June 2nd, 2009 11:37 am ET

Who cares, her husband is the reason why this country is going thru the crap that it is, REAGANOMICS, started all these deregulation crap. Companies sailing out the working people by shipping the jobs over seas, allowing banks to rob the customer, big tax cuts for the rich and so on and so on. Clinton came in and had things heading back in the right direction but we all know what happen when that criminal Bush and his thugs stole the White House in 2000. Two wars, collapse of the banking ind., mortgage melt down, 14 trillions dollar debt, hated all over the world. The GOP is nothing but a bunch of CROOKS

Joe   June 2nd, 2009 11:32 am ET

And why are we shown her with anderson cooper. You mean CNN could not get another photo?

Mark   June 2nd, 2009 11:32 am ET

Neat, she will enjoy meeting the Obamas, they are so down to earth. Much different than other Presidents.

EO   June 2nd, 2009 11:29 am ET

How much will this statute cost me,?? i remembered very well what happened to us in the 80s when Reagan was President.

We did not have jobs and was unemployed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice to see that my tax is been used for a cause, while children are homeless and hungry.

What happened to our priority???

Dan in NY   June 2nd, 2009 11:28 am ET

Not really major news, but it is nice that Nancy Reagan, a national treasure, will share a meal with Michelle Obama, who I believe will be historically viewed with the same admiration.

Fenarkleman   June 2nd, 2009 11:27 am ET

I hope that she has a nice time.

frank   June 2nd, 2009 11:26 am ET

Reagan was a REAL president...not what we have now!
a teleprompter farse

Ryan Wing   June 2nd, 2009 11:25 am ET

Mrs. Reagan is a big supporter of Stem Cell research, maybe she can suggest a stronger forward thinking policy in that area?

I'm glad she and Mrs. Obama are meeting.

IMissReagan   June 2nd, 2009 11:23 am ET

Finally, some class and elegance back in the White House, if only for a little bit.

Courtney   June 2nd, 2009 11:22 am ET

Two very classy ladies

MaryJo Bruce Surprise, Ariz   June 2nd, 2009 11:22 am ET

WOW! a conservative having lunch with a socialist. Great!

Gus The Willie   June 2nd, 2009 11:22 am ET

Nancy Reagan, the only Republican still standing on the prinicpals of the late President Reagan.

strong   June 2nd, 2009 11:19 am ET

Nancy is a feisty, old lady. Hope she is keeping well.

Troy   June 2nd, 2009 11:17 am ET

Both first ladies are a class act. Their husbands too. I only wish the current crop of republican politicos would learn a lesson in how to act or behave in public life.

Eric Shaw   June 2nd, 2009 11:16 am ET

Watch it Nancy, Dick will think you're not a Republican any more.

Charlie in Maine   June 2nd, 2009 11:15 am ET

A great champion of stem-cell research paying her respects to a man who would listen. To be fair, McCain felt the same way about stem-cells. The realenemy here is the anti-science right wing of the GOP.

No Mo Bush   June 2nd, 2009 11:14 am ET

I see dead people. CRRRREEEEPY. I talk to Ron and he talks back to me. CRRRRRRRRREEEEEPY.

Marie   June 2nd, 2009 11:12 am ET

She shouldn't be allowed in the WH.

EL   June 2nd, 2009 11:12 am ET

big deal!!!

Mark   June 2nd, 2009 11:12 am ET

God Bless Mrs. Reagan. She's such an inspiration to all of us.

Julia from Fayetteville, NC   June 2nd, 2009 11:12 am ET

How nice. Those new folks know how to do things right. So very neat and classy for Nancy Reagan who is a very gracious woman and she will appreciate these nice things happening to her husband.

Monrob   June 2nd, 2009 11:09 am ET

Statue of Reagan?

Why don't they let that old gizzard rest?

Gerald   June 2nd, 2009 11:08 am ET

Nancy , you are about to be used as a tool by Chairman Mau Obama , Please do not go

Anne   June 2nd, 2009 11:07 am ET

Oooh...I hope they give her an ipod with their speeches...and maybe a toy helicopter from the gift shop!

David in West Virginia   June 2nd, 2009 11:07 am ET

My hat is off to Michelle Obama for her invitation to Nancy Reagan to lunch with her at te White House, along with former First Lady Nancy Reagan for her acceptance. I'm not surprised that the Obamas reach out to former presidents and their wives when appropriate as they are a classy act and does the country proud under the extreme circumstances left him by the Bush Administration.

Saad   June 2nd, 2009 11:06 am ET

Is that Anderson? If so, I want to know the joke Nancy told him :) :):):):):)

God bless her.

Doug Fekete   June 2nd, 2009 11:06 am ET

Thank God. Now Rush will have another bleeding heart liberal target to sprew his hate toward. I didn't know that Nancy was a Democrat.

Kelby In Houston, TX   June 2nd, 2009 11:04 am ET

Isn't that nice. I hope Nancy Reagan is doing well

Doug, New Jersey   June 2nd, 2009 11:02 am ET

Maybe a visit from a woman who cared about all Americans, not just some, will rub off on Michelle.

Julia, OR   June 2nd, 2009 11:01 am ET

Good, I think it's nice that the President and Mrs. Obama will support the 100th birthday celebration of R. Reagan. I didn't vote for Reagan, but someday I hope there will be a 100th birthday celebration for Barack Obama.

Side Note: Dick Cheney is a fool. If he has so much to say why didn't he say while he was in office? He didn't because he was too busy being the king of the world, and didn't think he had to talk to the American people. We now know who was really running the White House. This man is so upset that he can't control our lives any longer that he is determined to make it difficult for the sitting president, who by the way is doing a fantastic job.

If Dick Cheney wants to be the voice of the GOP, let him run for office. No that's beneath him. He'd rather sneak into the office by pretending he can't find a VP, rule the country with an iron fist while hiding in bunkers, pretend he has an injury so someone has to wheel him around during Barack's inauguration, then take center stage and never leave the public airwaves. Cheney is evil, and history will depict him the way he really is-an enemy of the state.

Russell, NC   June 2nd, 2009 10:56 am ET

I'm sure the Republicans will be outraged that Obama is spending their money so the First Lady can have a meal with someone. Oh wait, she's eating with a Republican, never mind.

spudmctater   June 2nd, 2009 10:54 am ET

Are they unveiling a "statute" (as the story says) or a "statue?"

I guess it could be both, based on the story about new legislation!

ch   June 2nd, 2009 10:45 am ET

The legacy of Ronald Reagan – Lying under oath in Iran Contra, running up a huge deficit, ignoring those in need and his crazy dysfunctional family.

Reagan was truly the WORST thing about the 1980's.

Sean the thinker   June 2nd, 2009 10:44 am ET

Hmmm, I looked at the FOX news website and couldn't find any story about this event. I wonder why?

Arlene   June 2nd, 2009 10:40 am ET

Very nice...

The Morning Blah-Blah... | DEEP BRAIN DIARY   June 2nd, 2009 10:35 am ET

[...] Nancy Reagan will have lunch with Michelle Obama today at the White House.  She'll be at the ceremony when President Obama launches the Ronald Reagan Centennial Commission. [...]

Terry   June 2nd, 2009 10:34 am ET

Of the Conservative Presidents of the last 100 years, Bush Sr was clearly the most competent.

Reagan was second in ability. I'm glad that 9/11 didn't happen while he was president. He was a little trigger-happy.

I would rank Hoover, Coolidge, and Harding next.

Bush Jr was clearly the least competent of the six, though none of them could hold a candle to the more liberal presidents of the 20th century: T. Roosevelt, Wilson, F. Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, and Carter.

Clinton and Eisenhower are much harder to rate. Not great but clearly capable.

Common Sense 09   June 2nd, 2009 10:33 am ET

Their lunch should send out an awesome and powerful message of party unity!

Mike Boyd   June 2nd, 2009 10:32 am ET

"Statute" or "statue"? Where is your editor?!

Patty   June 2nd, 2009 10:30 am ET

I'm always amazed at the fascination and downright worshipping of this actor.

rdepontb   June 2nd, 2009 10:29 am ET

Now, that is how we share classy outlooks on life. Thank you, Nancy and Michelle, for showing how it's done. No name-calling or hate-mongering needed here, no back-handed innuendo, no artless grabs for attention or attempts at self-serving diversion.

It is a good day-

I laugh at Limbaugh daily   June 2nd, 2009 10:26 am ET

Two ladies with true class.

Kimberly   June 2nd, 2009 10:23 am ET

why? why is reagan getting a statue? what did he do? he was a preseident that did his job. big deal! AND he was not very good at it

John   June 2nd, 2009 10:22 am ET

Good for her!

Michelle admires her and she is a good lady!

the old sage   June 2nd, 2009 10:16 am ET

wouldn't it be refreshing to find ONE republican who had the class of Nancy Reagan??? why not you ask??? 1. trying to save face from 8 years of disasters and 2. their own personal agendas. What hurts me as a former republican and part of that church group is they are doing all they can to let this country fail instead of trying to build. i am glad this group was not in DC when Pearl Harbor happened-they cannot spell UNITED WE STAND.

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   June 2nd, 2009 10:10 am ET

I wonder how the republicans are going to make a mockery out of this. Their hero Reagan is getting a statue. They should all be cheering. But some idiot from their right wing is gonna have something negative to say as always.

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   June 2nd, 2009 10:05 am ET

It'll be nice for Nancy to possibly meet a president who can actually remember what he's done, dontcha think?!
