Gingrich tweeted last week that Sotomayor is a 'latina woman racist.'

WASHINGTON (CNN) – A week after sparking a political firestorm with a line on Twitter, Newt Gingrich is looking to cool the controversy in print.

Last week, the former House Speaker alluded to a line in a 2001 speech by Judge Sonia Sotomayor, in which President Obama's Supreme Court pick said she hoped that a "wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

Gingrich tweeted: "Imagine a judicial nominee said 'my experience as a white man makes me better than a latina woman.' new racism is no better than old racism" and "White man racist nominee would be forced to withdraw. Latina woman racist should also withdraw."

(Update: Sen. Jeff Sesssions Reaction)

The comments illuminated a strategy divide in GOP ranks over the Supreme Court fight, with high-profile faces like Gingrich and conservative host Rush Limbaugh highlighting what they called Sotomayor's racially divisive remarks, and leaders like National Republican Senatorial Committee John Cornyn urging the party to back away from that line of attack.

On Wednesday, Gingrich penned a lengthy op-ed in conservative Human Events that seemed to back away from his initial reaction.

"Shortly after President Obama nominated her to a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court, I read Judge Sonia Sotomayor's now famous words: 'I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life,'" he wrote.

"My initial reaction was strong and direct - perhaps too strong and too direct. The sentiment struck me as racist and I said so. Since then, some who want to have an open and honest consideration of Judge Sotomayor's fitness to serve on the nation's highest court have been critical of my word choice.

"With these critics who want to have an honest conversation, I agree. The word 'racist' should not have been applied to Judge Sotomayor as a person, even if her words themselves are unacceptable (a fact which both President Obama and his Press Secretary, Robert Gibbs, have since admitted)."

President Obama and White House aides said Sotomayor's choice of words was a poor one, but immediately fought back against critics who branded the judge racist.

"I think it is probably important for anybody involved in this debate to be exceedingly careful with the way in which they've decided to describe different aspects of this impending confirmation," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said last Wednesday.

UPDATE: Sen. Jeff Sessions, the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, praised Gingrich's decision to revisit his original statements. "I'm very glad he backed off," he told Dana Bash Wednesday, in a CNN exclusive. "I think that's unusual, that commentators do that, and I think it was very good that he did. I think that will... help us. I think that will help us have a real good discussion about the serious issues that the nations faces and the court faces."

Emma   June 3rd, 2009 11:16 am ET

What about Limbaugh, Newt's reversal leaves Limbaugh hanging out there all alone. The smart Republicans, those who need to worry about getting re-elected, read the tea leaves and since Newt has ambitions, he too read the tea leaves.

I believe this is a first, Limbaugh alone fighting the conservative cause and leading blind constituents, excuse me, his radio audience on a ride of hate.

President Obama is truly a smart politician. Conquer and divide!

dickson peter   June 3rd, 2009 11:16 am ET

Gingrich is one of those Republicans who will always see only the negative of whatever President Obama does. That's why the Republican party is branded a PARTY OF NO. Gingrich and his followers are beginning to realise that this will not do the party any good – there has to be a complete reversal.

mark   June 3rd, 2009 11:16 am ET

He is correct if a white man made the same comment he would start a firestorm of racial accusations racism is not committed by whites only.

Ted Tartaglia   June 3rd, 2009 11:15 am ET

The only reason that Newt backed off was because he saw himself walking into a trap of his own making. I am sure he still thinks Sotomayor is a racist. Newt is probably remembering the fight he picked with Clinton which ultimately cost him the Speakership of the House and led to his resigning from Congress.

As long as the Republican party embraces old fools like Gingrich, Cheney, Limbaugh, McConnell, and Boehner, they will continue to wander in the wilderness.

Amanda B Reckonwith   June 3rd, 2009 11:14 am ET

Vintage Gingrich. The most devisive person in America.

Lynn   June 3rd, 2009 11:14 am ET

Gingrich is a hot head trying to get attention; he should heed President Obama's advice and get educated by actually reading the complete speech before opening his mouth.

The damage done to this very capable judge by his "outrage" can't be erased by his pathetic admission of his knee jerk, hateful reaction.

Obviously Gingrich is totally unsuitable for public office!!

History has shown that women have not been held as equals by men. As women have advanced into areas where only men have resided or ruled, men find it necessary to pick apart every word and action of women. Newt, Rush, etc. need to get over their superior attitudes.

M - Justice 101   June 3rd, 2009 11:13 am ET

Voice uv reesun   June 3rd, 2009 11:11 am ET

Newt Gingrich eats his words. Thank you, Santa Claus, for coming early this year.

Joe   June 3rd, 2009 11:10 am ET

Take race off the table here. My biggest problem with her comment is the use of the word "wise". I worry about the what's going on in the head of a person who slaps the "wise" label on his or her self. I start to worry about the ego of a candidate who is talking like that to the public.

Greg PA   June 3rd, 2009 11:09 am ET

She is a racist. If a white man made that comment he would have no chance.

Gary Wayne   June 3rd, 2009 11:09 am ET

There goes Newt again. Seeing now that he played right into Obama's hands and has damaged himself, he now backtracks. Please do us all a favor and run for President in 2012. That way we get to see you go down in massive defeat in 2012.

giniajim   June 3rd, 2009 11:09 am ET

Good on Newt. Every so often Newt does something that shows he can be a grown-up. Takes a strong person to back off a mistake. He's one of the few commentators that I make a point of reading.

Lynda/Minnesota   June 3rd, 2009 11:09 am ET

Wow, Newt. How obtuse of you to notice that you will need the support of the Hispanic community in your presidental run of 2012.

By calling one of their own a racist, you jeopardized all with your typical knee jerk reaction and negative comments, didn't you?

John Z.   June 3rd, 2009 11:09 am ET

This is a small step backward in the Republican's steady march obscurity and extinction. I'm impressed. Usually when a repub says something stupid they don't have the guts or the inclination to correct it or even acknowledge that they were wrong.

Once again the GOP slime machine has had to back pedal on its shrill rhetoric and hateful name calling.

I'm pleased to hear that Mr. Gingrich has offered an apology. Now that Mr. Gingrich and Ms. Sotomayor's backers have made concessions in this matter it is possible to move forward and debate the confirmation in the proper framework. It is quite possible that civility is not dead.

Sylvia   June 3rd, 2009 10:50 am ET

This man should never call anyone a "RACIST", especially when he is one of the biggest racist, after Rush Limbaugh, in the GOP. His background is not that stellar either since he has shown that he is a cheater and has mistreated his sick wife to fool around with another woman. This is the GOP's MO. Criticized and demonize everyone else, but they do not look themselves in the mirror for doing worse.

Bill/CA   June 3rd, 2009 10:50 am ET

Kudos for Newt for the course correction. He's right, though, her comments may not have been racist, but they are entirely unacceptable.

Coward! and to think I once thought I vote for Newt for President. Either the woman is a racist or not and that has nothing to do with whether or not pointing it out causes a public controversy. This is why I no longer stomach the Republican Party. They have no principles anymore other than those dictated by public opinion polls.

Newt, it's time for a new Republican Revolution but this time you're on the losing end.

Expat American   June 3rd, 2009 10:49 am ET

MatthewDetroit   June 3rd, 2009 10:46 am ET

I dont believe the woman is a racist, but she does have a slant towards white people.
The issue is that she can not be objective.
She more importantly has shown that believes in making law from the bench which is wrong. She does not believe in the constitution. She believes in her feelings rather than reading the law as it is written.

Al Bluengreenenbrownenburger   June 3rd, 2009 10:46 am ET

I am glad Newt Gingrich admitted his wrong. His explanation for his "racist" comment is the norm for most of us. The "wise Latina woman" remark was a poor choice of words. I am a 59 year old liberal who has had his own fair share of poor choice of words. It always pays to promptly admit when you are wrong and say so.

Tim in NC   June 3rd, 2009 10:46 am ET

In the political world, saying this NOW is like trying to pull the bullet out of your foot after you shot yourself and then going on like nothing happened.

Good one Newty, that political comback is looking better and better everyday.

Dave   June 3rd, 2009 10:45 am ET

You should practice saying "I was wrong" a lot, Newt... because you've been wrong about everything you've ever said in your long and ugly career. You are one seriously lousy human being, and with your track record of evil you shouldn't be trying to judge anyone else. Accept it.

Old Farmboy   June 3rd, 2009 10:45 am ET

The statement is irrelevant due to the fact that a "white male" could never live the life of a "wise Latina woman." I do however feel that the statement is mildly racist, but not something worth grandstanding about. I give her credit with her determination coming from where she did to where she is, but that alone does not warrant a lifetime seat in the highest court of this land.

Adam   June 3rd, 2009 10:45 am ET

I like Obama and what he's doing but this was a completely political choice.

Once she explains how being "Latina woman" makes her experiences "richer" than a white man's, then I'll understand.

She backtracked in her explanation and it is not acceptable.

Tristan   June 3rd, 2009 10:45 am ET

Rod   June 3rd, 2009 10:44 am ET

Newt Gingrich is a man that shoots from the hip and thinks about what he has said after the fact. He is a blowhard and his 15 minutes of fame expired many years ago. He is no longer relevant to the current political scene.

greg   June 3rd, 2009 10:44 am ET

The fact is that the BO administration is in full-out damage control over this nomination. Amazing that they immediately have to start apologizing for Judge Sotomayor's statements that legitmately call into question her fitness for the Supreme Court.

I am a registered Democrat and have seen mistake after mistake from a party that has become under a firestorm of controversy. If the republicans want to recover and even have a chance in the future of any major political office then they need a serious reality check! Newt, can it! Gingrich's apology means one thing: Republican institutions and politicians did not receive a boost in political donations as a result of the the Republican strategy to dehumanize Sotomayor and inflame "white man anger".

Now, that is a two-for.

mark ferbet, kansas city, mo.   June 3rd, 2009 10:23 am ET

I believe the GOP is begining to realize that their ability to influence this President rests entirely in their ability to control the extreme right rhetoric. Newt's comments were unacceptable and too harsh, and the backlash within his own party to those remarks was strong. politically, Newt can only talk.... let him try to run for office, and the dirt that forced his resignation as speaker will be brought to light again, and he will no longer be relevant.

suresh   June 3rd, 2009 10:23 am ET

That is typical GOP tactic. First make a statement even though it is wrong. Then take it back. Meantime the damage is done. This is one more example how the leadership in GOP is only interested in going against anything Obama does. Like Rush said, they want this president to fail.

Laurie in Spokane   June 3rd, 2009 10:23 am ET

So Newt is backtracking after calling Sotomayor a racist. Goody for him, but he can't take back what he said. Everything coming from Obama is considered bad, whether true or not, by the Newts and the Rushes. So who cares what they say anymore? Rush the Comedian lives on playing with politics, so I wish he became the chairman of the GOP. That would mean the end of the GOP. Go for it, Rush!

Republicans are the American Taliban   June 3rd, 2009 10:22 am ET

You can't unflush a toilet NEWT!!! You can't UNyell FIRE in the theatre!!! Again the tactic of publishing obscene comments, then coming back with " what I meant to say was ". That makes everything ok now, huh....

pam Eugene OR   June 3rd, 2009 10:22 am ET

Newt finally admits the GOP needs the Latino votes. How forthright and honest he is all of a sudden. He is still the lying scumbag he was last week people.

Georgian   June 3rd, 2009 10:21 am ET

Newsflash: Gingrich is still a Bozo.

Tim   June 3rd, 2009 10:20 am ET

You shouldn't appologize when you are right.

Truth Teller   June 3rd, 2009 10:20 am ET

Too late for that bonehead, the damage (to your reputation, and party) has been done. People see you for what you really are. I am not a christian, but a christian saying fits perfectly here.

"For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again."

WhoCares?   June 3rd, 2009 10:19 am ET

Can't put that back in the box Newty!

Thanks for giving Democrats even more of the Hispanic and women voters next election cycle.

You, Cheney, Rush, and Steele are the best things ever for Democrats.

Lisa B in FL   June 3rd, 2009 10:19 am ET

Republicans – wrong again as usual. Oh boy, Limpballs is going to be pissed now!

Dale   June 3rd, 2009 10:19 am ET

Frankly a DUMB Latina woman would more often than not reach a better conclusion than Newt Gingrich!

KASSIE W.   June 3rd, 2009 10:18 am ET

Newt is back-peddling? I don't trust him, he's evil.

John   June 3rd, 2009 10:18 am ET

Newt has experience with poor wording but good on him anyway for admitting he made a kneejerk error. It's encouraging that he's big enough to do that.

Teleprompter of the U.S.A.   June 3rd, 2009 10:18 am ET

Man up, Gingrich, she is a racist. Her words prove it, not the fact that we're pointing it out.

Jerzjen   June 3rd, 2009 10:18 am ET

No Newt. The damage is already done. Just admit the truth. You finally read the speach, and realized you were wrong. You finally looked at her record and realized you were WRONG!! You and the other hate mongers owe this lady an apology! You want to debate her record fine, but the personal attacks on her as a Latina and as a woman can not just be pushed under the rug because suddenly you want to have an "honest conversation". You should have wanted the honest conversation from the start!

Lisa B in FL   June 3rd, 2009 10:18 am ET

Newt – once an idiot, always an idiot.

LJP   June 3rd, 2009 10:18 am ET

What's that sound?....The sound of Newt Gingrich AGAIN fading away from the political spotlight because of his own arrogant brand of narrow-minded, one-sided self-righteousness.

Kate   June 3rd, 2009 10:17 am ET

I'm so relieved. Now that Gingrich says Sotomayor is not a racist, we can all breathe easier!

Gary SC   June 3rd, 2009 10:17 am ET

This man is dispicable. He is a liar and can't be trusted. Maybe him and Rush were seperated at birth and split one brain.
He has so much hate he shouldn't be listened too.
Don't trust his backpeddling, he's up to something.

bill   June 3rd, 2009 10:17 am ET

So Newt is guilty of a "misspeak", the term that all politicians use when they say the wrong thing at the wrong time.

He now has to worry about flack from his fellow idiot, Lortab Limbaugh for his changing his mind.

GaryNOVA   June 3rd, 2009 10:17 am ET

Gingrich: "She's a racist" (I'm uncomforatable with Hispanics)

Later; Ginrich: "she's not a racist" (maybe i shouldn't of let people know that I'm uncomfortable with Hispanics)

Taylor   June 3rd, 2009 10:17 am ET

Gingrich shouldn't have called alot of people alot of things. He's a complete bag of wind. "Kissing up" now won't change the damage this man has done to so many.

ced   June 3rd, 2009 10:17 am ET

newt is the one who is racist. it takes one to know one. enough said. besides, newt will say anything to win the support of his right wing white men only racist repubublican party.

philo   June 3rd, 2009 10:16 am ET

I guess all those prescription drugs are making Newt confused.......................

MJHS1967   June 3rd, 2009 10:16 am ET

Jerks: #1 is Newt :( #2 is Limpballs :( and #3 is Steele the TOKEN :(

carlo   June 3rd, 2009 10:15 am ET

Nah. Ya think Newt?

MJ - San Antonio, TX   June 3rd, 2009 10:15 am ET

I am Hispanic and I do consider this nominee to be racist. I just do not trust her to do her job without being biased.

BMS in NC   June 3rd, 2009 10:15 am ET

Ahhh, Newty. You let the vicious genie out of the bottle, and you can't put it back in now. Your initial reaction showed your true colors. People will not forget.

Scout   June 3rd, 2009 10:15 am ET

Newt Gingrich is a lying, hypocritical, egotistical, sexist, bigoted homophobe. Way to go, Republicans. Nice choice for your party front-man. Keep applauding the fat little bag of gas–your horrible party will never win another election and that would be great for the country.

Mike in NYC   June 3rd, 2009 10:15 am ET

Despite his myriad negatives, he was right in this case. And wrong to back down. It always makes you look weak. "Strong and direct" is how politics should be played.

He's no longer an elected official, but may be seeking office in the future, so that may explain it.

This all strikes me as managed political theater, anyway.

Takeshi   June 3rd, 2009 10:13 am ET

so he is saying NOthing!! so whats the point. He could have said "OH! MY dumb butt actually read the hole panel conversation and see it was NOT what i thought it was. SOrry for using the Limba! talking points" That would be a 200% more believable.

phoenix86   June 3rd, 2009 10:13 am ET

You are just an old, white idiot!!!

kybill   June 3rd, 2009 10:13 am ET

Ms. Sotomayor is probably not a racists, but her comments surely were! They were obviously done for an audience that enjoyed her comments.

Liberal4Obama   June 3rd, 2009 10:13 am ET

Mr. Gingrich has not only shown that he is intellectually dishonest but a REAL racist

Lou from CT   June 3rd, 2009 10:13 am ET

I am glad Mr. GIngrich has stepped back from his initial comments. Words can wound more than one knows.

morris diehl   June 3rd, 2009 10:12 am ET

Newt just can't get his story straight. Maybe he can actually finally tell the true story of how he went to his then wife's hospital rooom, while she was recovering from a cancer operation and announced he wanted a divorce.

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   June 3rd, 2009 10:07 am ET

I have made plenty of "foot in mouth" statements. I have learned to slow down what I say most of the time. I think that Gingrich has to do that as well. He has greater exposure than me, and he needs to understand that his words carry weight with many people.

Roger Knapp   June 3rd, 2009 10:07 am ET

Gingrich is apparently not aware his staff stole the line about Sotomayor being a racist from Rush Limbaugh. It is difficult to remain a viable political candidate when you can't even come up with your own original punch line about a Supreme Court nominee.

Lisa DC   June 3rd, 2009 10:07 am ET

One word...Moron

RealityKing   June 3rd, 2009 10:06 am ET

And Sonia Sotomayor is clearly prejudice..

BKrause   June 3rd, 2009 10:06 am ET

Perhaps Gingrich, who is a member of the Bohemian Club and attends the summer encampment at the Bohemian Grove in northern California, can explain to us why there are no women allowed at this world power conclave that is so exclusionary. Then he can speak to Sotomayor's perceived weaknesses.

Steph   June 3rd, 2009 10:06 am ET

He realized that all of his old racist and sexist quotes would come back to haunt him so he decided to get off his high horse and try to let this quietly fade away.

Brian in AZ   June 3rd, 2009 10:06 am ET

Gingrich's statement represened the hardline conservative line on Sotomayor in the GOP conservative-moderate internal debate. This redaction, combined with Christie in New Jersey, sends a message of who is winning. Moderates are just more likely to get elected (mainly because the majority conservative base that elected Bush has disappeared in Iraq).

GOP = Good Old Practicality.

RealityKing   June 3rd, 2009 10:06 am ET

Prejudice is not racist., close, but not the same.

J. R.   June 3rd, 2009 10:05 am ET

An apology with conditions is NOT an apology. Latinos (and everyone else) should remember Newt's remarks – and Rush Limbaugh's as well (particularly since Rush is the Leader of the Republican Party) when voting at the next election!

Derrick   June 3rd, 2009 10:05 am ET

Newt, trying to cover up your mess isn't going to work. Both Republicans and Democracts alike can't stand you. We are starting to get past the partisanship and people like you, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Keith Olbermann, and Rachel Maddow are getting in the way. America doesn't need your garbage. Step aside so that America's greatness can shine through.

Joe E.   June 3rd, 2009 10:05 am ET

Newt............ try a new approach..................
THINK and RESEARCH before inserting foot in mouth.....................
Then, and only then, say the politically expedient things that will gain you support.

In Mark Twain's words, "It is better to be silent and be thought a fool than to speak, and remove all doubt." You removed a lot of doubt on this one old boy.

Sticks and stones   June 3rd, 2009 10:05 am ET

Taking back your words is like trying to get toothpaste back into the tube – usually ineffective.

JT   June 3rd, 2009 10:05 am ET

Kind of hard to retract such strong r@cist statements, Newt.

nbascribe   June 3rd, 2009 10:05 am ET

The problem with anyone who is in the talk business is that rarely do they want open, honest dialogue with listeners.

Honest dialogue makes for bad radio. If anyone had really read Judge Sotomayor's words in 2001 from the beginning of her speech to the end, one would find her to be in line with at least two other Supreme Court judges' experiences on life.

That is why Americans need not let talk show hosts dictate their decision process but actually do their own research on issues like this.

Kevin Leo (Jonesboro, GA)   June 3rd, 2009 10:04 am ET

Typical GOP crap!!! They throw a match at a can of gas and go "Ooops, did I do that?!"

The Unshrub   June 3rd, 2009 10:04 am ET

He sounds more and more like a typical republican; they like to shoot from the hip without thinking or learning all of the facts.

Retired US ARMY   June 3rd, 2009 10:04 am ET

Case where lips were engaged prior to engaging brain.

bob in LA   June 3rd, 2009 10:04 am ET

That's OK Newt, you're a Republican. You're supposed to speak before thinking!
All is forgiven- you headline-grabbing, closed-minded, hateful man.
Oh- I shouldn't have said that!

KMAN   June 3rd, 2009 10:04 am ET

It's kinda hard to "un-lynch" someone isn't it Newt? Don't worry pal ... you are irrelevant and old news anyway.

Bill   June 3rd, 2009 10:04 am ET

I said it before and I say it again: Who cares what the "Newt" says anyway? He is far too deep in the drain to crawl back out; his time has come and gone, thank God. But, maybe, just maybe, we would like to hear his take on family values? That, indeed, WOULD be interesting!

Tom Paine   June 3rd, 2009 10:03 am ET

The statement(s) Sotomayor made about her ethnicity being "better" may not have been racist, but it certainly was dumb and calls her impartiality and competence into question.

Waylon   June 3rd, 2009 10:03 am ET

So what you are saying Newt is that you took the old strategy of throwing it out there and see if it sticks, IT DIDNT, so now you have to retract your words. Maybe if you were just inteligent and read the speech you wouldn't have this problem. Next time think before you speak. Let people assume you are smart and don't open your mouth and remove all doubt

Pete   June 3rd, 2009 10:03 am ET

Utterly fascinating. Newt calls her a "racist" and demands her nomination immediately be withdrawn and then backpedals a week later.

I guess if Gibbs makes a crack about how Newt served his wife with divorce papers while she was in a cancer ward, that will be ok as long as Gibbs backpedals as well?

MAD MEX   June 3rd, 2009 10:03 am ET

Newt: Half hearted. Like me calling you an immoral fat ass, and then saying your previous filandering probs have nothing to do with you pudby face.

Charles   June 3rd, 2009 10:03 am ET

Newt Gingrich is one of the many examples (Rush Limbaugh being the other most prominent example) of what is wrong with the Republican Party:
1. Bitter
2. Spiteful
3. Forgetful
4. Hypocritic
5. Dishonest
6. Out of touch
7. Irrelevant
8. Talks the talk, but can't walk the walk (a.k.a. cowardly)
9. Nothing new to say
10. boring

If they keep going like this, the GOP will be dead after the 2010 elections.

David, Brooklyn   June 3rd, 2009 10:02 am ET

So, another one of those "I'm sorry to those who took it bad" apologies.

Or one of those, "I'm sorry my talking point didn't work the way I wanted it to" apologies.

Or one of those, "I'm sorry the world isn't so neatly divided into juvenile categories the way it is in my head" apologies.

I gotcha playa!

JPC   June 3rd, 2009 10:02 am ET

Newt made a "poor choice of words"....Sotomayor made a "poor choice of words".....and the difference IS.........

Gary T.   June 3rd, 2009 10:02 am ET

You can back track All you like Mr. Gingrich!

People are Not fooled!
We have your number & have for a Long time!!

I sincerely hope you & mr. Limbaugh keep spouting your decisive hate speech!

southerncousin   June 3rd, 2009 10:02 am ET

Any of you dope smokin' libs want to offer any kind of apology for your misstatements, that would be unheard of. Libs get away with those kind of statements. Look at what Charlie Rangel said over the weekend, not even a mention of it on CNN or MSNBC.

Art Michaelson   June 3rd, 2009 10:02 am ET

Gingrich, Cheny, Limbaugh: The new TRIOKA of Right Wing hate politics.

Republicans= Party of NO (with no solution)   June 3rd, 2009 10:02 am ET

Still can't believe that a party of elitist, racist, old white men have the nerve to call somebody else a racist. The statement was taken out of context. And thought I believe she could have worded it better, she meant that somebody of a different background could bring a new perspective.

Relax Party of No, you still have most of the Judicial judges. You're are getting your panties in a bunch for no reason, but what else could we expect?

JB   June 3rd, 2009 10:02 am ET

Give me a break. Newt hit the nail on the head "again".

F-Dog   June 3rd, 2009 10:02 am ET

Gingrinch would not have recanted if public opinion had swayed his way. As it appears more and more likely that she will be confirmed, he is trying to swing back to a more moderate stance. Perhaps we should simply ignore what he says from now on.

JB   June 3rd, 2009 10:01 am ET

Funny, no one stopped calling Bush Hitler

chutchin   June 3rd, 2009 10:01 am ET

Oh...changing your tune, Newtie boy? Good-because you are irrelevant. You hold no public office and when you did, you were morally bankrupt. Just shut up and stay home.

Steve from OH   June 3rd, 2009 10:01 am ET

Obama said earlier this week that Iran had a right to nuclear power. Today, news emerges that he leaked top-secret information on nuclear facilities and programs here in the US to the public. Coincidence?

God Bless President Obama, VP Biden, the First Families and "Bo"

Grog in Ohio   June 3rd, 2009 10:00 am ET

Butt out Newt the Loser. We got rid of you once, we DON'T WANT OR RESPECT YOUR LOPSIDED PROPAGANDA.

The hate-mongering is tearing this country to shreds – people are killing other people. STOP IT.

Aspen Professor   June 3rd, 2009 10:00 am ET

Perhaps it is time for Newt the adulterer to just go away lest he further damage the Republican Party.

L'broke   June 3rd, 2009 10:00 am ET

Hmmm....

Don't care.

How's that?

Mike Dallas   June 3rd, 2009 9:59 am ET

Uh, oh, the real party leader lush the lemming leader, will not be happy about this turn of events by a "spineless RINO".

Newt will have to submit to being "tea-bagged" repeatedly by lush until the messiah has absolved the lizard of his "sin"...

Sorry in advance, for THAT visual that is now permanently seared onto your retinas!

Carolyn   June 3rd, 2009 9:59 am ET

Newt, probably the best thing you could do would be to keep your mouth shut.

alvino   June 3rd, 2009 9:59 am ET

Rush is going to fry Newtie, and kick him out of the party. There is no room for an apologizer in the GOP.

Carl   June 3rd, 2009 9:59 am ET

I totally agree with what Gingrich said.
If a white man said that you would still hear the screaming.

JPC   June 3rd, 2009 9:59 am ET

Newt should have thought before he spoke!

Newt...get out of the game....   June 3rd, 2009 9:58 am ET

If you are going to be a "waffler" like that clown in the White House....just drop out of the political arena.

J. Appleby   June 3rd, 2009 9:58 am ET

I have never been a supporter of Newt, but I can see his point. It's too bad that we've gotten to the point that we look for anything at all as an excuse to jump all over someone.

mark   June 3rd, 2009 9:58 am ET

I always love it when a Republican, the most racist part that has ever existed in American politics, calls someone ELSE a racist. Newt is from Georgia; he is white and rich; he is a Repubican; his voting record (as will all Republicans), has always been against anything that is helpful to people of color......what a complete hypocrit....although the most embarrassing member of the Republican party is Michael Steele....it is like being a Jewish Nazi.

La Chatte   June 3rd, 2009 9:57 am ET

Aw gee, what's the matter Newt? Bad press make you change your mind?

Steve C - Atlanta, GA   June 3rd, 2009 9:57 am ET

It's already out there Newt....you should think before you speak...not one that people are likely to forget...your retraction is simply an admission that you are loud mouth who doesnt' think before he speaks....not a leader! Please go away!!!!

Tom   June 3rd, 2009 9:57 am ET

I am so tired of hearing these blow-hard politicians and their stupid remarks. When will we get some politicians that are educated and have some common sense to keep their mouths shut about other people. Stick with taking care of the government and stop trying to out-do each other. Can't you work together or you a bunch of tired old men/women that have nothing to do better but open your mouth and let out a bunch of hot air.

Melissa   June 3rd, 2009 9:57 am ET

No kidding. Gingritch should have thought before he opened his mouth. Now he's once against started a fire. Maybe Republicans are capable of learning yet. But I doubt it.

Ray   June 3rd, 2009 9:57 am ET

Gingrich is an idiot. Anyone that listens to this crook is also a moron. Keep it coming Newt, you are the Republican party. Your future looks like crap........idiot

Tatsuo   June 3rd, 2009 9:56 am ET

Why should Newt retract the statement?

"Gingrich tweeted: "Imagine a judicial nominee said 'my experience as a white man makes me better than a latina woman.' new racism is no better than old racism" and "White man racist nominee would be forced to withdraw. Latina woman racist should also withdraw."

This is good, sound logic. Why throw good logic out the window when it is applied to a minority?
America has been turned upside down. What was good is now bad and what was bad is now good.

As a Japanese I cannot figure out what has transpired to make the US this way, but I hope that this nonsense does not infect Japan's political system and society as a whole.

Robert Fredericks   June 3rd, 2009 9:56 am ET

I see nothing wrong in what Newt stated, he is correct in calling Sonia a racist with her decision making. Obama is making a JOKE out of this term already.

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   June 3rd, 2009 9:56 am ET

Newt can't keep his foot out of his mouth. And this guy use to be the Speaker of the House. Nancy Pelosi is a breath of fresh air compared to this guy. If you openly admit that your words were to strong Newt, of course people are going to attack you. You of all people should know this. Mr. Gingrich is not an elected official and hasn't declared that he's running for office, so he just needs to stay out of the news because all that he is doing is stirring up controversy.

eric   June 3rd, 2009 9:56 am ET

Do any Republicans think before they speak?

Pat in IL   June 3rd, 2009 9:55 am ET

Instead of the more intelligent approach of reading her comments in context nad intent, Gingrich, Rush, et al decided to immediately attack in a hateful, divisive manner......shame on them.

goawayrepublicans   June 3rd, 2009 9:55 am ET

I see, only Republicans and Conservatives are allowed to walk back from things they may have said, calling it a poor choice of words. Really guys, get a life, you have been around for way too long, the world is changing and I for one look forward to the day when all the old white hairs are gone on both sides of the isle.

Bev - NYC   June 3rd, 2009 9:55 am ET

Poor Gingrich, you already said it. I guess someone finally told you that these word can be played in a continous loop should you decide to run for something again. See what happens when you let a man who couldn't hack it in college do the research for your talking points, you have too take them back. The judge was expressing pride in her heritage just like white men have done for centuries. Pride is not the domaine of whites only. Hypocrite much Mr. Gingrich, which party nominated a Justice who belonged to a whites only country club?

As for the Speaker who was booted for ethics   June 3rd, 2009 9:55 am ET

Whatever Newt, the Republican party is following a former Speaker of The House that had to resign because of ethics violations, loud mouth Rush Limbaugh and an admitted liar Cheney...please keep it up for the Southeastern Republican Party...I love it...self-destruction at it's best!

TCM   June 3rd, 2009 9:55 am ET

yes you should have! Past performance is an indicator of future performance, and she's not going to rule with the letter of the law; but instead she'll cower to Obama's liberal agenda to pass laws that will hurt the spirit of America.

Enough   June 3rd, 2009 9:53 am ET

Maybe not, But I will, she's a racist. But it's ok cause she's a hispanic and racist against whites. And NO, I am not a white male, just sick of all the double standard from the Democratic party.

alvino   June 3rd, 2009 9:53 am ET

He should resign. Oh wait, other than titular co chair of the republican party, he does not have a job. One would think that even the right wing nuts would prefer to not have a leader who speaks first and thinks later.

Whammybar   June 3rd, 2009 9:53 am ET

So maybe Newt's initial comment means that she was correct! Way to go Newt, just be yourself. Hard to pedal backwards isn't it? You are the exact kind of "white guy" she was refering to. What are people like you afraid of?
By the way, I'm a "old white guy" also. Just sick and tired of all the bigotry and crap from your type for the last 50 years. She's a great choice and will add a great and needed perspective to the court.

Change_Has_Begun   June 3rd, 2009 9:52 am ET

Adele   June 3rd, 2009 9:52 am ET

Really ? Second thoughts ? Maybe you should think before you open your big extremist mouth ...

Ms. Dee, Texas   June 3rd, 2009 9:52 am ET

Newt is only bowing to pressure from his base. From the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. He meant every word he uttered.

The American people are not going to fall for that pious act of remorse. We know you really believe your sentiments as well as the Republican base.

Too late . . . we will not be MISLED by your lame apology!

Jak   June 3rd, 2009 9:52 am ET

So he says her words were unacceptable, yet he fails to say to his words were unacceptable? Let me help you, Newt...

"My reaction was a personal attack that was inexcusable. Though I may not agree with what Judge Sotomayor said, I had no place insulting her in such a personal way and I am sorry."

Seriously... if you want to truly acknowledge you said something wrong, don't immediately follow it up with an excuse that pins blame back on her.

Just My Opinion in Texas   June 3rd, 2009 9:52 am ET

Her comment WAS racist and the reason for that assertion is that if a white man had said the same thing, only subbing "wise, white man" for "wise, Latina" he'd have been excoriated by EVERY member of the news media (TV, radio and print.) and you would have been hearing calls for him to take his name out of consideration from every corner of this country. So why is it if a minority says something OBVIOUSLY racist, he/she gets a pass from the media and the politicians??

I'm not asking for special consideration for anyone, I'm just asking for people to use the same measuring stick for everyone. That's all.

mw   June 3rd, 2009 9:52 am ET

I like "Shut up"

Deb   June 3rd, 2009 9:51 am ET

Republicans are so quick to want to draw first blood. Newt's constant twittering and God awful remarks are just not helping him or his party.

Karl Denton   June 3rd, 2009 9:51 am ET

It's pretty interesting how the republicans come out with these BLASTING moments and then a week later retract or tone them down. Make no mistake, the way they are handling this is purposeful and with intent. Cause outrage then apologize for the "poor choice of words" later. I am a white middle class American and I don't see anything wrong with what she said. It's TRUE, she has perspective the bumbling republicans will never have because they cannot see past there own noses and hatred!

mw   June 3rd, 2009 9:51 am ET

Let me dial back on that comment.

Harold Abbott   June 3rd, 2009 9:51 am ET

Which of Newt's multiple personalities is speaking this time?

Jay   June 3rd, 2009 9:50 am ET

Wow, a republican admitting he shot first and then asked the question. Perhaps Gnewt, next time you should just keep your mouth shut until your brain gets in gear – I think at least a week should be about right to warm your gray matter to a humanly functioning level.

TheTruth   June 3rd, 2009 9:50 am ET

I believe Gingrich is a racist!

Ren from Baltimore   June 3rd, 2009 9:50 am ET

Newt, you stepped in it bigtime, showing you shoot before aiming. Now this half-apology, with an aside of "Obama dn Gibbs said it too!"

You still admit only to having read the one sentence of hers, from eight years ago, and not the rest of her statement there. You have not addressed the context at all. Either you want to meet the responsibilities of a spokesperson and do your homework thogoughly, or you will end up being totally ignored-

Shadysider   June 3rd, 2009 9:50 am ET

I'm just gonna go ahead and say Gingrich is a racist.

Newt Comment   June 3rd, 2009 9:50 am ET

You are leaving out one key detail: white Americans have all the money, power and influence. They have to be humble to avoid civil unrest. Latinos in particular like to blame others for their problems. First it was the Aztec oppressors, then every other culture who dominated them: the Spaniards, early Mexico, and now the Yanquis. As soon as Latinos learn how to stand on their own two feet, stop drinking so much beer and take responsibility for their own issues, maybe white racists like Newt will ease back on the rhetoric.

R Wolf   June 3rd, 2009 9:50 am ET

This man is a cheating irrevelant idiot. Why do you have to keep reporting every bit of trash he, bill, rush, ann and the other hate filled, non elected politicical pundits say? It should be more than just about ratings and shock value for the media. Don't you have any concern over what these stupid comments do to the Country at large? Please, just try and use some restraint when you report, please!!!!!!!!!

ben   June 3rd, 2009 9:50 am ET

Wha has happened to my republican party? Yes, I am a republican who voted for Obama. Why did I do this? I did it because the party had gone down so far because of the band of misfits at the top. Bush Cheney Rumfield et al. No need to mention all the terrible things that happened while these incompetents were running the show..
So now, what is my party doing? They are letting the same bunch of dinosaurs speak out every day against the democrats who are trying to remedy the mess they left behind.
The great party of Lincoln has become the lying deceitful party of George Bush. Please get rid of these blaber mouths and restore dignity to the republican party.

Skeeve   June 3rd, 2009 9:50 am ET

Nah, this is fine... you shouldn't have been speaking at all, since you have nothing to say, really. Other then this we expected no less then this from you :)

Super D   June 3rd, 2009 9:49 am ET

Newt,

You should know better, even though you speak the truth about Soto.

2 things:

You're a Republican, so anything you say sticks to you, unlike Democrats.

You're a white male, and it's ok to discriminate against white males. Because in the sick minds of anyone who isn't a white male, they believe that life for white males is a peice of cake.

Nothing could be further than the truth.

Don't ever apologize to these idiots again.

Triggidy   June 3rd, 2009 9:49 am ET

You think? Remember, think about what you say before you say it.

dominican mama 4 Obama   June 3rd, 2009 9:49 am ET

Ya think Newt? I'm more interested in knowing who is the person in your party that had enough "pull" to get you to retract that statement. Now there's a Republican I'd like to meet....so long as it is not Limpballs!

gl, Pittsburgh   June 3rd, 2009 9:49 am ET

It is too late becasue the demanaged have already taking effect. This man is a blantant racist becasue it take one to no one. He have made several racist statements one too many times.

Desmond   June 3rd, 2009 9:48 am ET

Newt Gingrich is beginning to show signs of intelligence and character.
Congratulations. No danger of such a cataclysmic change ever taking place in the "RUSH"

GOPer   June 3rd, 2009 9:48 am ET

Dear Mr. Gingrich: Please retire and take up self help writing on, "How Not To Act and What Not To Say". We need new/current talent in our party. Thank You!

Dr. Ed Holmes   June 3rd, 2009 9:48 am ET

Newt Gingrich misspeaks and yet he critizes Judge Sotomayor for misspeaking. Every judge uses their opinions, life experiences in rendering judicial opinions. Look at Judges Thomas, Alito, and Roberts. They vote every time just like you would expect them to vote.

Willard (Mitt) Romney belongs to the LDS church. You would expect him to be a Republican, be pro-life, pro-gun, and anti-gay marriage and if he became President, you would expect him to select judges that felt the same way he does and vote accordingly.

Chris   June 3rd, 2009 9:48 am ET

This whole issue would go away entirely if Judge Sotomayor cleared the air and publicly announced that she does not believe that race has any impact whatsoever on the competency of a judge. Unfortunately, she doesn't seem to be willing to do so... which leads me to believe it isn't just a "poor choice of words," but a deep rooted personal philosophy that by very definition is racist.

Until she convinces me otherwise, I have to believe that such racist words come from an equally racist heart. And there is no room for racism, of any kind or amount, on the Supreme Court.

A Heapin’ Healthy Bowl of News! | DEEP BRAIN DIARY   June 3rd, 2009 9:48 am ET

[...] MEAN to call Sotomayor a racist.  Just that what she SAID was racist.  Won't happen [...]

phoenix86   June 3rd, 2009 9:48 am ET

No need to apologize Mr. Speaker. Sotomayor's comment was racist (had it been a male judge who said the same thing he would have already been disbarred).

Obama is racist as well, so this choice just further consolidates an intolerant regimes stranglehold. Unfortunately, they appear to have sufficiently beaten the press into compliance and silence.

Reese'-Rich VA   June 3rd, 2009 9:48 am ET

I guess NEWT had to remember all the RACIST things he had done or said in his life. Simple GOP please don't talk about racist.

mw   June 3rd, 2009 9:47 am ET

You are a first class jerk. The rude comment was expected from you and your ilk. Shame on you and yours daily.

Accountability   June 3rd, 2009 9:47 am ET

Where's the apology? Or can Repubs only apologize to Rush?

CW, St. Paul   June 3rd, 2009 9:47 am ET

That's Newtie – Impulsive. Doesn't think before he responds to situations. I'm glad he doesn't hold any actual power.

21% of Americans are TRAITORS for wanting America to FAIL and 79% of Americans to SUFFER!   June 3rd, 2009 9:46 am ET

I for one, am glad this racist and sexist clown has finally come out of the "closet".

It truly rips the mask off of the republiKLAN party and exposes the true party which consists of white, Aryan Nation survivalist.

Now we progressive whites know who the true enemy is. The repubs can continue to try and put a "new" face on the racial and religious bigotry of the repub party, while most of us understood the true agenda of the Rabid Reich this shows it to more moderates that may not have been able to believe such bigoted beliefs still existed in America!

Tim S   June 3rd, 2009 9:46 am ET

That's the way Newt works.... Do whatever damage he can, then backtrack with a little tap-dance & "correction". Please climb back under your rock, Newt.

ronie patrick   June 3rd, 2009 9:45 am ET

This is a terrible man to begin with. I throught we had buried him so why has he surfaced again. Don't pay any attention to this old fool.

Newt   June 3rd, 2009 9:44 am ET

All of you are forgetting one detail: white Americans have all the money, power and influence. Whites have to be humble to avoid civil unrest among other races. Latinos in particular like to assume the role of the Victim. They blamed the Aztecs, the Spaniards, the early Mexican government and now the all-powerful Yanqius for all their problems.

Amazing!!!   June 3rd, 2009 9:44 am ET

Nice backpeddling, Newt!

DaBird   June 3rd, 2009 9:44 am ET

No Newt, you should have called her racist, radical LaRaza member, judge who feels the need to make laws instead of enforce the law.

Jeff in Virginia   June 3rd, 2009 9:43 am ET

Why is Gingrich still in the news?

He left the congress amid ethical problems.

He was cheating on his own wife while going after Clinton for doing the same.

He has no moral authority. None.

It is an outrage that you people even report on him.

Tony Justin   June 3rd, 2009 9:43 am ET

Newt Gingrich is a hateful, angry and spiteful man. He thinks that depreciating women is his calling in life. He was particularly horrible to his first wife – who he told he wanted to divorce when she was in the hospital with cancer. What a terrible family man. What a terrible symbol for th GOP.

Dallas Independent - thank goodness   June 3rd, 2009 9:43 am ET

Why apologize for speaking what is truthful? The woman is a reverse racist, no ifs, ands or buts about it. She's a loud-mouthed hispanic woman too big for her britches! The does not have the appropriate, shall we say personality, to sit on the SCOTUS. I can just see her next to Ruth!

AJ   June 3rd, 2009 9:43 am ET

Newt Gingrinch, you are the Rev. Al Sharpton of the Republican Party. Congrats!!

bendo   June 3rd, 2009 9:43 am ET

lizard newt: too late.... the damange has already been done, Hispanics/Latinos are going to vote over whelming for the Dems in 2010 and 2012. Because of all the rants by by gop operatives, your party has lost the Hispantic/Latino vote for generations...THANKS! from a lifelong Dem! It will only be a matter of time when libs over take the SC after just one of the two neo-cons are gone, scalia or thomas and O is packing the appellant courts with libs....your worst nightmare come true!!!

Smarty   June 3rd, 2009 9:42 am ET

No one is interested in Tewt anyway. He's just another 300 pound blowhard right wing nut case trying to get attention. Sotomayor has better job prospects that the rich gringo.

Al Ware (Atlanta, GA)   June 3rd, 2009 9:42 am ET

What makes Newt Gingrich relevant? The answer is nothing! He's irrelevant. He controversial, which is why the media focuses in on comments made by him and other nut cases such as Rush Limbaugh. I for one am getting tired of the news media flaming controversy by providing those morons with a voice. We as a people should demand the news media be more responsible with their reporting and held accountable when they sensationalize stupidity. Does Newt even have a full-time job, if so, why doesn't he stick to that?

Brad   June 3rd, 2009 9:42 am ET

So in other words, it's no longer politically convenient to oppose her nomination with such sentiments... interesting.

rds   June 3rd, 2009 9:41 am ET

translation=i thought I had the 'base' behind me but when I turned around there were on 12 people left.

Jim   June 3rd, 2009 9:41 am ET

White man with loose lips and hole in head should close them both...

chris (hartford, ct)   June 3rd, 2009 9:41 am ET

So Newt is basically saying that, instead of clearly thinking an issue through and speaking after he understood the complexity of the subject, Gringrich immediately started posting flames on Twitter. Looks like the GOP has joined the 21st century after all!

Abraham Lincoln   June 3rd, 2009 9:41 am ET

What happened to the Republican party...?

We had 8 years of gunboat and cowboy mentality ruining our image around the world....

Now we've had about 5 months of Republicans ruining our image here in America....

I truly think it's our mentality of having a cold heart and a mean spirit that has us obsessively disliked in almost every corner of the globe....

Republicans need to back off the white supremacy platform, America is changing, white people are no longer the majority, we need to be more inclusive of Non-White People......

Al Ware (Atlanta, GA)   June 3rd, 2009 9:41 am ET

What makes Newt Gingrich relevant? The answer is nothing! He's irrelevant. He controversial, which is why the media focuses in on comments made by him and other nut cases such as Rush Limbaugh. Eric   June 3rd, 2009 9:41 am ET

He's only sorry he got caught, but he's not really apologetic for thinking and saying what he did. And the Republicans' sudden interest in racism is laughable considering their record.

barking republican ankle biters   June 3rd, 2009 9:40 am ET

Let the dead bury the dead.

John Long   June 3rd, 2009 9:40 am ET

Hmmm .... so, Newt acknowledges that "shoot from the lip" comments can be either awkward, as in Judge Sotomayor's case, or outright wrong and inappropriate, as in Gingrich's case. And this means we have any NEW reason to give this lying, corrupt, self-interested, ex-political-hack any credibility?

Newt just dug his own grave even deeper. And it looks as if he wants to put the GOP in there with him.

JDH   June 3rd, 2009 9:39 am ET

Gingrich did what so many right-wing nut jobs do, he spoke without thinking. Lushbaugh does it, Cheney does it. Gingrich is no different. What Sotomayor said was not racist. She simply said her perspective might be a fresh approach to the Court.

It's probably impossible for us to expect the attack dogs to think before they bark/bite.

scott winter haven   June 3rd, 2009 9:39 am ET

Newt for President-2012.

Joanna   June 3rd, 2009 9:39 am ET

Sotomayor's words were taken way out of context, they critics neglected to read the WHOLE statement. Than they didn't look at her record, which actually sided against many racism claims about 87% of the time. I can respect anyone who can admit they were wrong, thanks Gingrich.

watching   June 3rd, 2009 9:38 am ET

Sotomayer is pulling back from a line in a public speech.
"I used a poor choice of words" acceptable

gingrich made a personal attack "she is a racist"
Gingrich needs to apologize directly to Sotomayer, not yet acceptable.

The Party of NO is only “pro-life” to save a zygote now, so it can then kill the “babies” 18 years later as soldiers in an elective religious war.   June 3rd, 2009 9:38 am ET

Too late now you old white racist, your true "colors" were exposed for all to see.

WI Vet   June 3rd, 2009 9:36 am ET

So let see, Sotomayor said something several years ago unacceptable to others now but alright in the whole of a 4000 plus words speech . Gingrich says something unacceptable now by most of the country but is ok in his mind.

If your confused so am I. Good rule to follow & note.
"2 ears 1mouth, listen twice as much as you speak and your do much better in Life"

Roderick Knight   June 3rd, 2009 9:36 am ET

Too late newt....we now have it on record , so any plans you have for 2012 just went bye bye...no latino or any minority for that matter will ever vote for you so have a nice retirement ..adulterer.

Hotdog   June 3rd, 2009 9:35 am ET

Newt is a lier. He meant exactly what he said. Now that he see what he said did not go over well in the court of public opinion he wants to take it back. He is trying so hard to be a leading GOP candidate for the 2012 presidental election.

I can see Canada from my house!   June 3rd, 2009 9:35 am ET

Well, well, well.....Newt the bomb-thrower may actually be getting wise in his old age. I seem to recall some years ago that Speaker Gingrich actually sent a list of words one should use when describing their opponents, which icluded "sick", " pathetic" and " traitorous" , to name just a few. Maybe he's actually realising there is limited value in talking like this, but its far more likely he saw his potential presidential stock take a nose-dive among the demographics he desperately needs to win a general election. Regardless of the motivation, I applaud him for owning up to his mistake.

Brandon   June 3rd, 2009 9:35 am ET

What he wanted to say was sexist. Considering his treatment of women, specifically all the ones he has married and the mother of his children, Newt is the last person to call other names.

Irma in North Carolina   June 3rd, 2009 9:34 am ET

To late Newt you and Rush already did the damage to your party. There is no way you can correct it. Why dont you and Rush go up and join Sarah in Alaska. You three are all alike. I think your paerty should be ashamed of you and you want to run for president. It will be interesting to see the debates and how you put Sarah down. Newt do you realize there are only 21 percent of the people who claim theirselves as republicans. Each time you guys open your mouth you will keep going down.

Danny E. Gonzalez   June 3rd, 2009 9:34 am ET

you know what gets to me? The former speaker is an intelligent guy; he clearly misses being in politics and I imagine that he has high aspirations still in the political arena... but when you have people shoot from the hip like he did it is hard to begin a dialog. I have heard some many people in both sides use bitter words towards one another and towards Judge Sotomayor... this is not the way to make our democracy work.. I hope that the former speaker can be a part of the discussion, however in a more civil way. I'm a Dem, but I choose not to chastize people who disagree with me... perhaps he can learn that too...

Carole   June 3rd, 2009 9:33 am ET

Right on, Newt. In the dictionary the term 'racist' describes a true racist, and there is a picture of your hero Ron Reagan. Ron Reagan is the true racist, with voodo economics, government deregulation which we see now that you can't let certain industries just run amuck.

I remember when it was found out that Newt used a Hitler Nazi handbook on how to gain power for his party the Rethugs.

Newt is a 'racist" and 'cheater' on his third wife.

RobK   June 3rd, 2009 9:33 am ET

Anyone that says that women or minorities are always more empathetic than white males should be called on it, including Justice Ginsburg. There are plenty of women who have zero empathy and there are plenty of white males who tear up over a squirrel hit by a car. The only ones that know how much empathy Judge Sotomayor has are those that interact with her on a regular basis.

Dew5050   June 3rd, 2009 9:33 am ET

Who cares? Gingrich is finished! His words carries no weight!

Keefe   June 3rd, 2009 9:33 am ET

It's absolutely amazing that Newt Gingrich thinks that backing off his earlier statements will be water under the bridge.....

Well Newt, the damage has been done, just ask Sarah Palin, once that damage is done, there's no coming back.....

Sarah Palin went around the country referring to certain parts as Real America, and at the sametime insighting an almost Violent Crowd into frenzy's with Hatred of Obama.....

Newt you might as well see if you can vacation up in Alaska, go do some Moose Hunting with Sarah Palin, cuase you sure won't be winning any type of elections here in the lower 48 states after the things you've said and done....

Tom, Cary NC   June 3rd, 2009 9:32 am ET

Of course she is racist – As Newt said – imagine a white judge saying that he makes better decisions because he is white! I CHALLENGE any liberal to say with a straight face that they wouldn't hound a white nominee who made such a horrible comment as a racist.

Jim   June 3rd, 2009 9:32 am ET

So her choice of words was poor, and so was his. We're all equal now, right?

Seattle Sue   June 3rd, 2009 9:32 am ET

I do not believe anything this sorry excuse of a man says. If he thinks he has a chance of becoming President in 2012 , he is more delusional than I imagined.

Maria from VT   June 3rd, 2009 9:31 am ET

Too late now Speaker Gingrich!

Dan, TX   June 3rd, 2009 9:31 am ET

Newt Gingrich is an arrogant man. Maybe he should be a supreme court justice – his life experience would give him empathy for aldulterers.

Maggie from Virginia   June 3rd, 2009 9:30 am ET

Too late... Don't even think about running in 2012. You can kiss the presidency goodbye.

Jim, Burlington NC   June 3rd, 2009 9:29 am ET

This is Newt "Serial Philanderer " Gingrich, instead of criticizing a person who has actually through hard work lifted themselves to almost the highest level of their profession he should be asking God for forgiveness of his sins of adultry.

SN in MN   June 3rd, 2009 9:29 am ET

But if she were White and made the equivalent statement, she'd be outa' here.

Stephanie   June 3rd, 2009 9:29 am ET

Now see, here's the problem with taking a grand total of 36 words from a full 4000-word speech to nitpick: lots and LOTS of backpedaling.

No Grumpy White Guy   June 3rd, 2009 9:29 am ET

Yeah, and I shouldn't have called you a grumpy old white guy.

Marc M   June 3rd, 2009 9:28 am ET

Don't apologize, she is a racist.

Her comments ARE her.

Larry   June 3rd, 2009 9:28 am ET

People like old Newt will never change ...

They will only change their story ...

The Republican party is dead in the eyes of educated Americans ...

Their BS smells and we all know it ...

Americans finally see, the real Republican party ...

Arrogant, Racist, Self centered, Liars, Cheats, The Party Of NO Good

mtv   June 3rd, 2009 9:28 am ET

Oh so after you get a lot on feedback on your Bigmouth now you realize what you said was wrong???? Hypocrite and you are also and IDIOT!!!!!

RobK   June 3rd, 2009 9:27 am ET

Glad to see Newt backing off on his comments. Too often people who utter a racist or insensitive remark are branded racist, even if their whole life experience is opposite to that. Most often this happens to white people, but as we've seen here, the same charge can be leveled against people of color and minorities.

Chuck   June 3rd, 2009 9:26 am ET

Too late, Newt. You're dismissed and we demand your resignation, otherwise, you're fired.

david   June 3rd, 2009 9:25 am ET

newt needs to go away. he is dishonorable, lacks integrity. at a time when the nation sought to impeach clinton, because of monica, newt was cheating on his then wife, enjoying an adulterous relationship. yet newt was on board for impeaching clinton. why anyone listens to newt is a mystery to me. same goes for rush, the prescription drug addict whether current of fomer addict. no one is perfect, for sure. but these two men presented themselves as something they were not only to be found out later. both are liars and lack any credibility. not a fan of sotomayor but criticism should not be coming from newt or rush.

Terry   June 3rd, 2009 9:24 am ET

It should be obvious to everyone that Conservatives want the Obama Administration to fail and for our economy and our personal lives to suffer as a result. That is the only way to prevent his reelection.

The twin goals of Conservatism are increased wealth for the upper class and increased power for the Conservative leadership. There are no other goals. We can tell this because their actions are only directed toward their goals.

Their rhetoric, designed to entice us to vote for them, has no connection to their goals. From 1994 through 2006, Conservatives controlled the Congress. From 2000 – 2008, the controlled the presidency. During that time, what did they do to reduce the size of government, limit the power of the federal government, increase fiscal responsibility, reduce the debt, balance the budget, pass a gay marriage amendment, pass a flag burning amendment, etc.? Answer: nothing.

The people who voted for them were suckers.

Sniffit   June 3rd, 2009 9:24 am ET

That's ok Newty-poo...we desperately need opinionated partisan leaders who fly off the handle and say stupid, offensive things before they're privy to all the facts and have taken the time to reflect deeply on what would constitute a reasonable, rational, responsible response. Not.

Frank, FL   June 3rd, 2009 9:24 am ET

No, really? Someone who's running for the presidency should not have called a Supreme Court nominee a racist? Really Sherlock?

Don't worry Newt, we know the devil made you do it. In this case the devil is Rush Limbreath, your leader.

See you in the losers column in 2012.
