Limbaugh could support Sotomayor, but said he still thinks she is a racist.

(CNN) - A week after calling Sonia Sotomayor a "racist" in reference to her 2001 "wise Latina" remarks, conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh said Wednesday he's now open to supporting President Obama's Supreme Court nominee.

"I can see a possibility of supporting this nomination if I can be convinced that she does have a sensibility toward life in a legal sense," Limbaugh said on his radio program.

Limbaugh's statement comes the same day former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who himself derided Sotomayor as a "racist" last week, wrote in an op-ed that he regretted his choice of words.

On his show Wednesday, Limbaugh said his potential support of Sotomayor stems from the nominee's unclear stance on abortion coupled with the fact that she is a Catholic.

"I don't know that it will ever happen, but if you know, the opportunity to get somebody like her, she's a Catholic, she's a devout Catholic, she's a Hispanic Catholic, Puerto Rican, they tend to be devout, she hasn't got a record on this. Normally liberals do have a record," Limbaugh said.

But, unlike Gingrich, the conservative talker did not back away from his contention Sotomayor is a racist.

I didn't know why he retracted it," Limabaugh said of Gingrich. "What is it? It's racism, reverse racism, whatever, but it's still racism, and she would bring a form of racism and bigotry to the court. But as I said yesterday, folks, I'm - I'm - I may look past that.

Meanwhile, Obama officials have said the president has not directly asked Sotomayor how she might rule in abortion rights cases, but California Democrat Dianne Feinstein - who met with Sotomayor Tuesday - said that the judge believes strongly in legal precedent.

"I believe she has a real respect for precedent and … if that is really true then I will agree with her, and I believe it is," said Feinstein, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Every Country is known by its Speakers on Media (Radio, TV, etc.)

We don't want Idiots like Limbaugh to be a reflection of our Country.

He has Defamed Sotomayor, by talking what he believed was not the true reflection of her.

He should be prosecuted.

Who cares what the entertainment has to say. They only serve one purpose, and that is to entertain their audience. If their audience is stupid enough to confuse entertainment for reality, then that's their loss.

erik   June 3rd, 2009 6:07 pm ET

There is no way anything that Rush says can be trusted. It doesn't matter if his remarks are against, or for, something that might be construed as helpful to the Democrats. Everything he says is tainted by his agenda.

Wow, what is this world coming to. Limbaugh actually checked a fact? This isn't a trend, right? He isn't becoming a fact-checker? What would his beloved neocon following do if Limbaugh was basing his punditry on actual facts?

Is this the begining of the rehabiltation of the crazy of the village? It must be a voice of convenience. As much we do not accept voices of intolerance directing at us from outside the USA, we should deal with same voices of hatreed and divisive such as of this crazy man. people who understand freedom should call on the sponsers of his radip sherade and ask them to pull off their financial support the same way people are dealing with another crazy voice "Savage"

Limbaugh knows his stance on many issues are totally ridiculous and the American people are tired of it all. Time to come aboard and help Obama restore our economy and show the world that the U.S. of A is rid of the bullying Administration. Happy days are here again :)

Simpliticus   June 3rd, 2009 5:58 pm ET

The "racist" epithets simply didn't work! Limbaugh, Gingrich, and others who could lose lots from this policy have to retract their assessments on Sotomayor. Others like Tancredo who do not have anything to lose will continue to lambaste Democrats and Sotomayor with this "racist" epithet. It is that simple! There was nothing to this effort in the first place but when you have more than one person attempting to sling the arrows of discontent for a person on the other side of the fence with policy and so forth, one makes the attempt. Limbaugh now has David Duke to concern himself and that doesn't bode well for the de facto leader of the GOP. Sotmayor is now a shoe in for the Supreme Court, the battle is over! And the GOP knows it! This dog won't hunt no more!

Does anyone care who Rush Windbag supports or doesn't support?

jmccoy   June 3rd, 2009 5:58 pm ET

Rush backed down because it appears now that Sotomayor may be the Latina equivalent of Clarence Thomas. ALthough the New Hampshire case gets all of the attention, it appears that she has a record of voting AGAINST minorities. That being said, i still support her nomination and I hope that she will be fair to EVERYONE regardless of their ethnicity. I see her as being more of a moderate than a liberal. That will be fine. Souter was a moderate which says to me that he was not a slave to any party but committed to his conscience and the constitution. I have to respect that.

louise   June 3rd, 2009 5:57 pm ET

Rush,Beck, and Hannity all fall in same catagory.....uneducated and unqualified to give factual information. It speaks volumns about the people that listen to them, Republicans really need to find some new spokesman!!!!

It doesn't matter if Rush supports Judge Sotomayor or not. I mean really, what does this one man's opinion have to do with the process of selecting and approval of her? He doesn't get to decide or have a vote in this issue. Who does he think he is. Have all the Republicans been waiting with baited breath to hear his opinion. Have they talked to Rush privately to make him tone down his rhetoric.
And Rush is the last person who I want to have any say so in the abortion issue. For him to think he can make woman do what he wants with regards to their body is rather disgusting.

Fourechodog   June 3rd, 2009 5:55 pm ET

CNN Comments: Where liberals get together to pat each other on the back.

Soooo, when a hispanic says that she's better qualified then white men because of her race, that's not racism.
But if a white man says he's better qualified than a hispanic (or other ethnicity) because of his race, then...

Let's all put our thinking caps on. Maybe, Rush gets paid so much because he has a huge audience. Maybe, he has a huge audience because he delivers a quality product, that is, what you normally don't find in mainstream media. In fact, I think Faux Noise, or however you like to call it, is winning the ratings war in spades.

So keep patting yourselves on the back while our country slips deeper into socialism. The Change you voted for.

Gotta love how he and the GOPers are speaking out of both sides of their mouth here:

1. She must follow the rule of law, which includes the "penumbra of rights" created by the Bill of Rights know as the right to privacy and the precedential case law known as Roe v. Wade. Stare decisis. And let's not forget the 14th Amendment and the hotbutton issue of same-sex marriage.

2. She hopefully, because she's a "devout Catholic," will help them overturn Roe v. Wade and prevent same-sex marriage by basing her decision not on the rule of law (see above), but on a desire to force all Americans to adhere to Catholic/Christian dogma and the tenets set forth by the church.

See what they're doing? That's right, continuing their hypocrisy streak. Don't miss a day guys...we've got Guiness waiting in the wings.

Intrigued Independent   June 3rd, 2009 5:28 pm ET

Rush's flip-flop could disguise a new Republican political maneuver to raise skepticism among far left Democrats on the issue of abortion. By highlighting her lack of judicial decisions with regard to abortion and by noting her Roman Catholic faith at a time when abortion is front and center in the news media could indicate that he wants the Democrats to derail a almost certain nomination. This is just a thought to consider.

Lost in Texas FOREVER   June 3rd, 2009 5:27 pm ET

I think this sort of proves the argument that has been made before of Rush Limbaugh being "pure entertainment" because no one with any amount of common sense should take this guy seriously at all.It may be true that he has 20 million listeners but if he has 20 million FOLLOWERS that live and die with every word he says then our country has some serious ills. Rush probably chuckles to himself when he signs off and counts his money saying "well that should hold them until tomorrow!"

LacrosseMom   June 3rd, 2009 5:27 pm ET

@ V. Clausewitz......... Liberals, and ALL thinking free people should be very afraid of Limbaugh, because his rhetoric can and does incite hate, division, fear and...... the lies he tells are all too often believed!

We may make fun of Limbaugh, but he is a danger to our Freedom and Democracy!

Sam I Am   June 3rd, 2009 5:27 pm ET

Limbaugh is an under-smart, over-paid windbag. He will say anything to keep his 400 million a year paycheck. He's been the voice of the radical right for a few years now, but now that that segment of our population has shrunk to Limbaugh, his mom, and a few nutcases, he's changing his tune. His radio shows have become more and more shrill and desperate over the last weeks, as he realizes the solid base upon which he once stood has turned to goo. Sadly, we will never be free of this man until he passes on to his great reward, but it is entertaining to see him squirm and whine. The emperor has no clothes.

only about the President but the country as well.

I think these men have done more than any other factor brought down
the Republican Party to its knees, and cannot stop doing there thing to'
put them selves somehow in a position of power in the press.

They all need to get a real life and do something to help the President
mend the country and make America great again, and not pull it down
further. If any of these guys had a position of real power, God Help us
All!!!

Republicans are useless to America's future   June 3rd, 2009 5:25 pm ET

What? The Republicans have just now figured out that Sotomayor can and will be confirmed without a single vote from any of them?

They have spent the last 2 weeks with hateful attacks that have only further alienated intelligent Americans away from their Party and now at the last second they pretend to support her?

Wake up the last 10 of you stil calling yourself Republicans – your leaders lie as easily as they breathe. Limbaugh and the rest of the bashing Republicans just figured out they are going to lose the confirmation battle in a huge, embarrassing way so now they are lying and pretending to support Sotomayor to try to save face and do damage control.

Too late – we know Republican tactics and games all too well at this point. In 2010 America will speak even louder to rid ourselves of all of them up for re-election.The days of the constantly negative do-nothings are OVER.

Carol   June 3rd, 2009 5:23 pm ET

You almost have to admire Rush for being able to look past the fact that he thinks she is a racist . . . I wonder if he considers himself a racist when he says things like, "I don't know that it will ever happen, but if you know, the opportunity to get somebody like her, she's a Catholic, she's a devout Catholic, she's a Hispanic Catholic, Puerto Rican, they tend to be devout, she hasn't got a record on this."

James M. Holmes   June 3rd, 2009 5:23 pm ET

I'm betting that Rush was told by quite a few Republicans to shut up and quit the racist nonsense, since it was / is hurting them... They probably told him that no more Republicans would show up on his show anymore if he didn't listen... and we all know the best way to scare a Republican is to go after the only thing that matters to a Republican – MONEY!

None of the GOP sheep (21%ers) would take him seriously anymore if fellow Republicans refuse to talk to him again! Thus killing his show...

Laura, WA   June 3rd, 2009 5:22 pm ET

Gingrich withdrawing the "racist" label, and now on the same day even Rush Limbaugh is softening his rhetoric about Sotomayor? Don't tell me there's actually someone sane who still has some influence in the Republican party, who's managed to rein some of these clowns in. Could this be evidence of an effort to keep their party from going the way of the Whigs?

Denise   June 3rd, 2009 5:22 pm ET

Why are there so many more rightwing nut radio hosts than there are liberal ones? Are they not qualified to do anything else? Is there a GED finishing school in some undisclosed location they go to to pass the muster? Why is it their listeners have so much time on their hands to listen to their programs during weekdays when everyone else is busy going about their daily lives? It would explain why so many of them are uneducated drug addicts or alcoholics.

Most folks can make their own decisions based on reality. If they need professional advice, they go to a professional. Limbaugh would make even more millions if he had a show on Divorce, Donuts and Drugs, The Three D's....

The only two people who could possibly have any influence over Rush, convincing him to back off are the owner of the Krispy Kreme Donut shop down the street or his hmmmm ex housekeeper/maid.
Maybe their conversation with Rush went something like this "El Rushbo, please cool it for a while, take another late nite trip to Jamaica, else we're going to have to cut off your supply of donuts and oxycotin if you don't stop talking so much smack."......

Pioneer   June 3rd, 2009 5:13 pm ET

This guy is on the radio, because no one wanted to look at him when he had his short lived TV show. I am at a loss as to why the CNN media print and report what this guy does, and says
I don't listen to his radio show for a reason.
Stop reporting what this guy says.
HE IS NOT NEWS.

I didn't even know there still was a Rush Limbaugh!!

once upon a horse   June 3rd, 2009 5:12 pm ET

I guess then this proves that because one makes comments that may be thought of as being racist doesn't really the mean that the person IS racist. Thank you to the person who brought the song "Obama the magic Negro" to the forefront and basically said that when minorities support and endorse another minority candidate it's only due to race whereas when whites endorse and support another white candidate then it's alright!

MillerJ   June 3rd, 2009 5:11 pm ET

Gee what a surprise, another bash anything to do with conservatives story. Give it up CNN MSNBC has the far left socialist audience, either try being somewhat centrist, or just shut down.

Puh-lease. Who believes this nonsense? First Newt, then Limbaugh....

Right out of the Rovian playbook–plant the seed, then "retract" after the damage has been implemented (wink, wink).

Unfortunately for the GOP, this deplorable treatment of Judge Sotomayor will not soon be forgotten, coming from these de-facto "leaders" of the Republican Party. Sad.

Mike   June 3rd, 2009 5:10 pm ET

Rush, Newt – send in the clowns. Who cares what these morons have to say.

Laurie in Spokane   June 3rd, 2009 5:10 pm ET

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   June 3rd, 2009 5:10 pm ET

Dan at 4:41,
You err, though only so slightly. Many of our politicians speak without thinking first.
And as of late, it's been our Rep friends doing a lot of quick speaking without thinking it thru. When my Rep friends ran the country (completely from 2001-2006), you can now "see and feel" the remnants of their drunken demeanor.

Good luck to the current administration and elected officials on cleaning up what was done to us over the last several years.
As for Rush, Dan, he and Newt spoke too quickly, thinking they should be the first one's out of the gate on shooting down the nomination.

CNN = Moveon.org   June 3rd, 2009 5:08 pm ET

@P. Y.

Awe... boo hoo, poor baby. Are you through spreading your lies? It is sad that you would rather see the Iraqi people under the oppression of Saddam Hussein still. This is a man that killed hundreds of thousands of his own people, yet you feel he should still be in power? You are an idiot and really self centered aren't you? You are a true liberal in that you only care about yourself first and to hell with the other countries who may be suffering.

LacrosseMom   June 3rd, 2009 5:08 pm ET

@Tim........ I wrote a response to your "response" to me. But CNN did not post it. So I will just say, that Sotomayor is no more a racist than I am!

I too, am a Latina, and my experiences as a minority in our Nation, has formed me, as we all are formed by our life's experiences.

However someone who grew up in white in a white-middle-class-suburban neighborhood, does not quite understand the plight of those who grew up poor,or Black or Asian, or in a Ghetto,or Latino. The experience of a tough life, or a poor upbringing changes you. Makes one more able to understand the plight of the less fortunate, of those who are poor, minorities, ...... different.

Its not, Tim, that I am better because of the "richness of my experience" (as Sotomayor said) but that I am different and therefore, more willing and able to see through the 'eyes' of those who are less fortunate. And I can not, comprehend the life of those who are wealthy, or who are men. For I have never been a man, nor wealthy. Its not ....... racism........ Tim, it is what it is.

Peace.

tn mom   June 3rd, 2009 5:04 pm ET

Why do we even have/ need this abortion litmus test? That one issue seems to always be what concerns everyone when a new justice is chosen. It is legal. It has been for 37 years. Conservatives need to get over it. If you aren't pro-choice, then fine, but don't tell others what they should do or believe!

Alex   June 3rd, 2009 5:04 pm ET

I don't support Rush on everything, but I was listening today and CNN is clearly taking him out of context as usual.

Chad   June 3rd, 2009 5:04 pm ET

I bet Judge Sotomayor is so relieved that she may get the support of Rush. I bet she has been wrecked with dispair wondering if he would come to her support...sleepless nights I tell you.

Really? Why are we still talking about this...60 dems=comfirmation! This is such a media story only...Dems don't seem to be sweating nor should they. I hope she has a long and proud career!

The only racists around here are Gingrich and this blowhard, but that was a foregone conclusion.

The more important point is: WHO CARES WHAT THIS GOON THINKS?? His talk of "supporting" this nomination? There's a term for that - it's called "delusions of grandeur."

dem1   June 3rd, 2009 5:03 pm ET

And thus, Rush's status as Republican leader is no longer. Someone got to him and convinced him to change his mind. Someone got to Newt too.

Rush and Newt don't have the capacity to back away from their statements. Especially in unison. Someone is pulling their strings...

Who's behind the scenes on this one?

They're Bluffing!   June 3rd, 2009 5:03 pm ET

Let Newt & Rush do the talking for the GOP and digging the party's grave by alienating the huge number of Hispanics and other minorities who understand the intention behind the mean words. I wonder if those two are the first ones blaming the Hispanics for everything that goes wrong in America. They are ignorant, big mouths and plainly STUPID!

@ worried mom

Yes, we have been miserable for the past 8 years. We watched the Bush administration destroy our country and actually destroy our image world wide. We had to hear daily of our men and women dying in a country that we declared war on FOR NOTHING. They were never a threat to us. We also had to feel the responsiblity for our government being responsible for all the deaths of thousands of the Iraqi people and for the misery we caused them as well as the thousands of our men and women who have been injured due to this war . I always felt physically sick when ever I saw G. Bush on TV trying to convince us that everything he was doing was right.

Good Lord. He has to be the single most arrogant human being on this planet.

Denise   June 3rd, 2009 5:00 pm ET

Too bad Sotomayor wasn't the presiding judge during Rush's numerous courtroom "appearances". Perhaps she would have sentenced him up the river without a key as he had been prescribing for "them, there, others" in his same predicament over the years. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy!

I don't watch much cable, although occasionally I'll watch FOX if Comedy Central is airing reruns. I can't watch Keith on MSNBC either. The pop up of Rush doing jumping jacks in a Johnny Cash knockoff suit in the lower right hand corner of the screen is one image I can do without, especially right after dinner!

Valsie   June 3rd, 2009 5:00 pm ET

Rush is a three x's married three x's divorcee, who has been let go "fired" from previous jobs for sexist and racist commentary. Republicans can have him! Idiots

David   June 3rd, 2009 4:59 pm ET

Lot's of back-peddling on this issue today. I'm fully convinced that if Obama had nominated Jesus Christ incarnate for the Supreme Court seat, many in the GOP would have objected. "What about the day he turned over the tables of the money-changers in the Temple! Clearly, he lacks the even temperment to be a Supreme Court Justice. We can't have justices basing decisions on anger rather than sound judicial principles."

Walter   June 3rd, 2009 4:59 pm ET

Last time I checked, radio blowhards don't get to vote in the U.S. Senate.

So who cares whether or not Rush supports Judge Sotomayor? The guy is one of his party's worst representatives anyway. With him as an enemy, the President and his nominee don't need many friends.

Jefe   June 3rd, 2009 4:59 pm ET

Rush, if you're reading, I'm a Catholic as well. I'm personally against abortion, but I don't think its the federal government's business to decide whether or not people can make the choice for themselves. I also believe that if you want to teach Creationism is public schools, you need to teach Satanism as well.

I guess the difference between you and me is, I'm an American, and you are a Constitution-hating, drug-addicted, anti-American, media-channel terrorist.

Bubba   June 3rd, 2009 4:59 pm ET

TripleA, I think you can relax about ACORN now, okay buddy? One of these days, go down to the voter registration place and tell them you name is Hugh Jass, and you want to register to vote. See that look they gave you? Now imagine that you are a teenager with a book full of hundreds of names, and half of them say 'Bart Simpson' or 'Mickey Mouse.' Imagine the look, and that's why we know about voter fraud by ACORN; it amounted to people who needed money being paid a nickel per name.
There might have been massive voter fraud, but not from amateurs like ACORN. Talk to the Russian mob, or Diebold.

Michael Bindner   June 3rd, 2009 4:59 pm ET

They are trying to do to Sotomayor what liberals did to Meirs, because the left will think twice if their enemies endorse their pick.

I think Obama has more spine than to fall for it, at least I hope he does.

Old Veteran   June 3rd, 2009 4:59 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh is so quick to label someone a racist. I guess he can easily identify one- he see a racist every time looks inthe mirror.
People like him and his shallow views is why we will never be rid of racism inthis country.

Typical Limbaugh. I guess the Republic Party told him and Newt to shut up, and now they both are falling in line like good soldiers. Oops. That was my mistake. They never were in the service, were they? Chickenhawks. All wind, no substance.

Squigman   June 3rd, 2009 4:58 pm ET

Here's the enemy of our nation. This pig, and the party he runs (if only by proxy), are the enemy of all free thinking, and peace loving people. It is my hope that some day our nation wakes up to what this "poor example of a human being" has done, and demands that he, and the rest of his kind are held accountable.

j   June 3rd, 2009 4:58 pm ET

I just don't understand and will not forgive. One cannot rant and rave and press their point for days, all the time infecting peoples minds with their crud and ridicule and then step back and recant as though it's no big deal and I really didn't mean it. WHERE IS THE ACCOUNTABILITY HERE – WHERE ARE THESE FAMILY VALUES? These men need a 12 step program to handle their hate and anger. This is an apology of convinience and nothing more. There is no sincerity in this – it's about money and sponsorships. These are dangerous men for the weak of mind and those willing to blindly follow.

skyhawkdriver   June 3rd, 2009 4:55 pm ET

The fact that so many people write on here only goes to show that lumblubber is unfortunatly the most widely listened to talk show host in america..more than cnn,fox,hannity.etc..the fact that he is a controversial buffoon makes him millions of dollars..we continue to listen to the likes of pelosi, reid, feinstein, kennedy, kerry and think these people care about us when all they care about is getting reelected and all the perks that go along with it...but if rush tells us things like that..or that obumbler has gone on another great apology tour we talk trash about him..I also hate to admit it but a lot of the time the idiot is right..it is just that a lot of us would never admit it

Gary   June 3rd, 2009 4:55 pm ET

I wonder who made Rush decide to kiss the ring. He certainly has no respect for Republican leaders in Congress. His timing, alongside with Gingrich's, is telling. Neither Boehner nor McConnell nor Steele have been able to reel him in. I find myself wondering if he got a call from Dick Cheney or George W. Bush.

T in the Big D   June 3rd, 2009 4:55 pm ET

Awsome response Carlo

Where's Pat Buchanan's and Lindsey Graham's apology for their r@cial comments about Sotomayor?

Tom Paine   June 3rd, 2009 4:54 pm ET

Sotomayor could be on the Supreme Court – making decisions that could affect 300 million Americans for generations – and CNN is still talking about Rush Limbaugh?

The focus should be Sotomayor – what are her qualifications and belief system? Can she ever get beyond her ethnicity and gender? Someone with guts on the Judiciary Committee should find out.

John in Massachsetts   June 3rd, 2009 4:54 pm ET

The reason for the backtracks is there's a reasonable chance she may end up a pretty moderate justice. She's catholic and she's made it on her own despite a poor upbringing. I'm betting there's a lot of Libertainian in her. And she's not a lock on the abortion issue, especially once she becomes a judge and is beholding to no one.

Jon   June 3rd, 2009 4:54 pm ET

Her comments were still racist.

Alex from DC   June 3rd, 2009 4:54 pm ET

She probably does have "a sensibility toward life in a legal sense": as a Catholic, she should be against the death penalty.

I'm sure Judge Sotomayor will sleep better tonight given Rush thinks he might be able to support her.... who cares??? Last I checked he didn't have a vote. The only good thing about this is maybe the Repubs are finally finding their "intestinal fortitude" and are going to stand up to Rush and Newt... He hasn't trashed those who criticized him this week for his words... progress!!!

Limbaugh and Gingrich in the same day? Who got to them? GOP elected reps? Who told them to back off? I guess it wasn't working and the potential of losing the Latino vote forever scared the hell out of the GOP!

Denise   June 3rd, 2009 4:51 pm ET

Rush is too fat, uneducated and ill informed to be scary. He is being played for the "reverse intellect" that he is. He would be better served to stay behind the curtain in dittohead lala land. Whenever he rears his ugly head back into the national spotlight, he becomes a laughingstock or has to retract his assinine or offensive comments. He looks as if he's a few cheeseburgers and fries from keeling over. I'm sure there will be thousands of other rightwing nut radio hosts to take his place.

Alex from DC   June 3rd, 2009 4:51 pm ET

Ron Caldwell   June 3rd, 2009 4:51 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh is an idiot, pure and simple. He's gotten such an ego on him that the right believes that he alone is the arbiter for what goes on in this country. Who died and made him God? Apparently somebody did or he'd have been off the air a long time ago and as forgotten as high-button shoes. I think he should read (assuming he CAN read) Judge Sotomayor's full speech. But then again...that might make him think and we all know that people like Limbaugh HATE the idea of thinking!!

I think the reason Republians are warming to her is because there's a growing recognition that she may end up a fairly moderate judge. She's catholic, she comes from a poor background and she's pulled herself up by the bootstraps. Sounds like a closet libertarian to me. and once she's on the court she'll be free to vote her conscience.

adam/buffalo,ny   June 3rd, 2009 4:45 pm ET

If anyone actually listened to him today. You have to laugh at this RIDICULOUS article. He never flip flopped. He even laughed off the idea of flip flopping when after his discussion about it, MSNBC ran the same story. He even laughed at MSNBC for not quoting him properly just like these pro-Obama writers at CNN. And yes he is an entertainer, even HE DOESN'T dispute that. But he means what he says and he won't back down from this ridiculous attempt to make it seem like he flipped.

This is a Proof and a Live Example of how big an Idiot it this Guy.

This Jerk has been Yelling for the past few days on his Radio Talk Show…."Sotomayor a "Racist"".

Fred the Moderate   June 3rd, 2009 4:40 pm ET

These guys have no Idea what they think. In fact, they can't think at all. Obama is as down the middle of the road as they come. He loves his family and he tries to treat everybody with respect. This galls these people, in fact most of the GOP. It is unfortunate that guys like this have nearly ended the party.

A word to the wise. A non-inclusive party won't do anything in 3 years or 30! You want to grow instead of srink? Think big tent. If you do, at least all the American people win!

Of course he would look past racism, he is a racist after all. Abortion should be legal point blank. For people like him it should be mandatory.

Missouri Guy   June 3rd, 2009 4:39 pm ET

The only prereq for writing for CNN is being liberal. No training needed.

No wonder you hate Rush, when you don't get the facts. It's so said you can't see you're a being dupped.

SpiralingAgony   June 3rd, 2009 4:39 pm ET

proud republican, while I didn't go around calling Rush the leader of the GOP ( I DID find that funny, I must admit.. :P you know, in a circus-atmosphere kind of way), your POV is noted.

I am curious as to your opinion on Pawlenty, who appears to have a much more moderate take on issues than many of the conservative guys the media is focusing on at the moment (Limbaugh, Cheney, Gingrich, etc)

Ben   June 3rd, 2009 4:38 pm ET

Stop covering Rush Limbaugh!!!

He is not a politician
He does not have anything to do with the real world...

Shame on you CNN.

Minnesotan   June 3rd, 2009 4:38 pm ET

Is there really anyone with an IQ of more than 12 who cares what Rush says? I sincerely doubt it....

Ralph   June 3rd, 2009 4:38 pm ET

So there you have it, the defacto head of the GOP saying that just so long as someone agrees with his positions it's OK if they are racist.

This isn't exactly news, but I don't think it's been openly stated before.

T. Lee   June 3rd, 2009 4:38 pm ET

What does it say about all those rabid, foaming-at-the-mouth supporters of Rush Limbaugh that they follow a man who only graduated high school and according to his own mother, failed every college class he took before he QUIT ...his second semister wasn't it?

As if this man is qualified to evaluate – much less condemn – ANYONE with Sotomayer's education and experience...speaks volumes about the intellect and blind partisianship of those who hang on every word from this bigot's mouth!

Mack   June 3rd, 2009 4:38 pm ET

This is what Forest Gump would say to Rush regarding his new-found support of Judge Sotomayor,

"But you don't get to vote for her confirmation, Lt Dan!!"

Gary   June 3rd, 2009 4:37 pm ET

Limbaugh and Newt are not serious about giving anyone a fair hearing. They are only stepping back because it is becoming clear to almost everyone how out of touch they are with their views.

CNN = Moveon.org   June 3rd, 2009 4:36 pm ET

Not that it matters, because he doesn't vote on her, but he has not flip-flopped on calling her a racist. She still made a racist comment no matter how you spin it. She should withdraw her nomination, if liberals want to stick to their own standards for what racism is. However, Democrats feel it is okay for them to make such racist comments since most liberals on this site support her comments. Of course this comes from the same people who voted in a President based solely on race.

Ken   June 3rd, 2009 4:36 pm ET

So let's see: Rush has a religious litmus test for supporting people on the SCOTUS, and he hopes such people will go against established law and legislate from the bench to do away with abortion. Wow, now that's 'conservatism' we can believe in!!!!

The level of hypocrisy and delusion it talkes to be a [R] true-beliver these days is just absolutely stunning!

And experience, life experience - does not form you, your personality and your opinions? Of course it does. If you're white, family well-to-do, everything going your way - you won't understand the hardship of others - incl. poor whites, as well as others not fortunate to have all the good things from family.

If you've struggled and worked all your life, a self-made person - you will have a particular view on life. This is not racist, not elitist, not classist - it's just the way it is.

When Rush, who only cares about his ratings, not the Republican party starts retracting what he says, then you really know that their (Republican) party is in trouble.

Austin   June 3rd, 2009 4:35 pm ET

I'm just calling a big ol' BS on that one. What Rush is saying is that if Sotomayor's views were COMPLETELY different, he might change his mind. He still needs to apologize for those attacks, and places like CNN need to stop pretending his voice is relevant.

Repub in VA   June 3rd, 2009 4:35 pm ET

read the transcript, rush said he was not retracting his claim that she was a racist. he only made his point about her being pro-life to point out why she scares the far left wingers.

its unbelievable how CNN is distorting his words. sadly, most people will just be spoon fed their opinions of rush even though they don't listen firsthand. liberals dont know how to think for themselves.

Libbie   June 3rd, 2009 4:35 pm ET

Limbaugh has a careful strategy here. His mission is to raise doubt in the minds of the liberals on Sotomayor's position on abortion. If he comes out with statements that she may have the "right" position, he may scare some of the Dems away from voting for her confirmation, letting Obama's pick fail through the actions of his own people. Brilliant, as always.

Erin   June 3rd, 2009 4:35 pm ET

Sounds like the GOP had a secret meeting earlier this week and realized a few things:

A) Sotomayor is going to get confirmed no matter what
B) Complaining about it and being the "opposition" party only makes them look rediculous considering this was originally a Bush appointee.
C) Most importantly – they know that Hispanics are soon going to be larger in population then any other minority group – and even whites soon. Starting the year off by making them angry was a very dumb move... and even Rush & Newt are now realizing that it's political suicide to take this fight any further
D) This has NOTHING to do with Sotomayors potential views on Abortion.

AD   June 3rd, 2009 4:34 pm ET

OK.. Let me get this straight. She is a still a racist but he will go along with it because she is Catholic. You have got to be kidding me!!!

OK.. Out with it!! Who pulled Newt and Rush aside and told them to shut up. Come on!! We are waiting!!!!!

Rush is so SCREWED up he doesn't know if he's coming or going. This guy is FULL of BS. He's got NO credibility and is a nobody when it comes to Washington Politics.

All Rush is .. is a man with a BIG MOUTH and TALKS TRASH!!! That's it.

Do you know how many Rushy's are out there doing the same dam thing? PUH-LEEZE, Rush Limbaugh is a FRAUD and FAKE-MAKE WANNA-BE.

My uncle Bubba would put Rush to SHAME!!! Rush may think he's bad, but he hasn't met Uncle BUBBA. Whew... Uncle Bubba don't play and he'll set Rush Limbaugh straight.

Missy in KY   June 3rd, 2009 4:33 pm ET

Why do these people use the Bible and religion when it is convenient for them? Why wasn't abortion a major concern when we had a pro-life president? Wouldn't that had been a prime opportunity to have made effort against abortion? No, Limbaugh and Gingrich use this issue, like so may people who call themselves Christians, when they can't stand a Democrat in office. Hypocrites!

JT   June 3rd, 2009 4:33 pm ET

Oh, The GOP memo must have gone out last night. These ridiculous people! Even more ridiculous are the followers of them.

Fact is – Newt, Rush, Pat Buchanan, Sessions, Tancredo, and Lindsey Graham made hard, r@cists comments. You can't just say that in unison coming from the GOP, then turn around a couple of days later and say Sotomayor's a great person, and not have a major, major credibility problem.

Their apology is NOT BELIEVED. They need to apologize directly to Sonia Sotomayor – all of them. I believe Pat Buchanan was just out today saying the same thing. Also Lindsey Graham has not apologized. I can't even believe anybody was quoting Tancredo to begin with.

The GOP has Zero credibility. What a way to send the rest of their <12% support base running away in disgust.

Todd   June 3rd, 2009 4:33 pm ET

Rush is quickly turning into a light weight like Sean Hannity. No one is taking them seriously anymore. They are just entertainers that say what their core audience wants to hear and therefore lack any real credibility. They would have said the exact same type of statement towards anyone who Obama picked as justice. They are so predictable and just simpleton lightweights. Newt at least says what he really feels and does not just toe the far right line. Rush and Hannity have turned themselves into cartoons.

AJB   June 3rd, 2009 4:33 pm ET

I wonder if his ratings have dropped – that's the only way you could get the blowhard to admit anything of this nature.

Why would anyone listen to this bitter, bigoted loser? C'mon folks – he did so much hillbilly heroin that he made himself deaf! Is that intelligent? Is that someone to listen to and respect? Not in my household.

Kevin B   June 3rd, 2009 4:33 pm ET

The democrats and Mr Obama are handing the GOP thier heads over and over again. Maybe now they will begin to reach across party lines and work on behalf of all americans, not just thier own narrow interest.

Limbaugh aside for a moment ..... people make out as if racism were the worst thing in the world. Racism is everywhere in the world, in varying degrees. Nobody is racism-free 100%, nobody. Why must everything, or so it seems, be racism-based or blamed on racism? How tiring to listen to all this.

Dan   June 3rd, 2009 4:31 pm ET

Rush is too fat to flip. He just flops

Leonard   June 3rd, 2009 4:30 pm ET

Sorry, Rush did NOT flip-flop or whatever the term is. The state run MSNBC reporter only heard what she wanted to hear in his comments. He said again after hearing this that she is still a racist! Oh and by the way, it was OK to call Republican nominiees racist? We can talk about pubic hair on a Coke can but we cant use the term racist?

J.Crobuzon   June 3rd, 2009 4:30 pm ET

Too little, too late, and everyone knows you really meant it. Bill Clinton would take back Monica if he could; McCain would take back Palin. So, what did they threaten you with, Rush? More criminal prosecution? Search your car every day until you stop killing your own party with obsessive bigotry? Maybe even get your radio station's insurance company to demand pee tests of all employees? Because you sure didn't just happen to suddenly find you agree with Obama, Pelosi, and Reid about the wisdom of appointing a wise Latina woman to the bench, did you?

That one   June 3rd, 2009 4:30 pm ET

what a clown....This has nothing to do with change of heart. Change of ratings I might say including comments from "elected" rethugs.

Ryan (Charlotte)   June 3rd, 2009 4:30 pm ET

While i am a fan of Rush and agree with most of what he says, i consistently ask myself why is he constantly quoted all over CNN. He is simply a radio talk show host plain and simple. He is not a elected official and should not be treated as such. I love seeing the liberals so steamed over all of this.

Tim   June 3rd, 2009 4:30 pm ET

LaCrosse mom,

Sotomayhor is a racist based on words that came out of her mouth. How is that a lie?

Or you are now redifining racism the same way you attempt to redefine marriage?

First he was against the Judge before he was for her... This sounds all to familiar....

Kevin B   June 3rd, 2009 4:29 pm ET

Rush, Gingrich and the GOP leadership have seen polling data indicating the huge amount of damage they have done to the GOP's future chances in national elections. This is only reason there is any appearance of moderation.

Mr Obama and the democrats are running circles around these clowns and they do not know how to deal with it.

In this case the fear and hateful rhetoric lost.

Ernie in LA   June 3rd, 2009 4:29 pm ET

Claudia in Houson   June 3rd, 2009 4:29 pm ET

Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh probably collaborated together after both backtracking on the same day. Remember it is Limbaugh who tells those who are the spineless Republicans what to do.

DrPangloss   June 3rd, 2009 4:28 pm ET

Why is this a shock? Rush is saying he has no problem with racism (just ask Donovan McNabb), but he does have a problem with abortion.

Triple A   June 3rd, 2009 4:28 pm ET

hey Vic of New york, of course she is going to get voted in and I am sure in the next election the left should do very well for 2 reasons I can think of off the top of my head.

1. they get to vote 2 or three times (sometimes more) per election thanks in part to organizations like ACORN.

2. the number of people with their hands out to the Government is nearing or may have even exceeded the number of people willing to work for a living.

This broad statement of course does not include all Latino's nor is this hand out mentality limited to just Latino's.

Missy in KY   June 3rd, 2009 4:28 pm ET

Why does anyone or any network give this man any attention? What is his major accomplishments except for criticizing and creating hatred among people? Why is he so worried about "life"? He almost has people killing each other on a daily basis with his judgmental and hypocrital RACIST comments stirring up hate. Go away, loser Limbaugh! You are far from being moral.

Tim   June 3rd, 2009 4:28 pm ET

Oops, it looks like Sotomayor said almost the exact same thing several years earlier, so it's not a slip of the tongue but a reflection of her true beliefs. Separate rules for different groups of people.

Michael   June 3rd, 2009 4:28 pm ET

Gingrich and Limbaugh's comments were irrelevant bile when they said Judge Sotomayor was a racist. Their views are just as much irrelevant bile now that they've done 180-degree turns on the issue.

Nice to see they've each screwed the pooch in terms of their own credibility, though...

Juan   June 3rd, 2009 4:28 pm ET

Limbaugh has been a bigot and a Dope for a while now so who cares what he says. The media keeps bringing him up as if he what he says is that important. Limbaugh and the WWE (World Wresling Entertainment) are the same, You can't take them too seriously.

terpmaniac   June 3rd, 2009 4:27 pm ET

Well since Rush and Newt now say she is "not" a racist she must not really be one because we all know Rush and Newt would never lie about such a thing...right?

(America, the land of the free and the stupid)!

Proud Republican   June 3rd, 2009 4:27 pm ET

As a proud republican who does not listen to Rush's show or to any of the extreme right wing, I hope that this goes to show all of those out there who call him the "leader" of the GOP that he is in fact nothing more than a commentator. He is not nor has he ever been the head of the GOP. He is a movement conservative not really a republican. And as for Gingrich, well he's not in any leadership role in the GOP anymore.

Only one republican senator that I can think of even came close to saying anything like what Rush and Gingrich did. For the vast majority of the rest of them (actual leaders of the GOP) they said they want to give Sotomayor a fair hearing and they want to learn all they can about her judicial philosophy which is NOT about her gender or race.

Eldo Hill   June 3rd, 2009 4:27 pm ET

I view Limbaugh and Ginrich views as much as I would Mickey Mouse, I would question their views on Race, however I think that they have fully shown where they stand on racism and from the definiion of a racist I think they ( Limbaugh and Ginrich) fall into that catagory I saw nothing wrong with what she said she just expressed her view point the same as everybody does. I have very serious concerns about all elected officials views on race because they will say anthing to get elected

Hawk   June 3rd, 2009 4:27 pm ET

Who cares what the blowhard says. He does not represent conservatives. He does not represent Republicans. He is a druggie clown who represents only himself. If everyone (Republicans and the media – like Fox) would just ignore him he just might do us all a favor and go away. As it is, he is hurting th conservative and Republican causes.

David F   June 3rd, 2009 4:27 pm ET

Hah! He probably realized, as I'm sure Newt did, bashing someone who straddles two voting blocs (Female/Hispanic) the Republicans very much need was not a good thing to do. Methinks they stepped in it this time.

Then that means trouble for liberals.

This could be his ploy at reverse psychology to get liberals to vote against her.

Or it could be true, Sotomayor might be 'pro-life/anti-abortion' after all.

Who knows for sure what she'll do once appointed.

This may not be as dumb as some of you think. This could be the turning point in the Leadership of the GOP. Rush has always been a self thinking man. Earlier in the year, when he was considered the "de facto leader" of the GOP, nobody would stand in his way. Now that several Top Republicans made they're opinions, and Rush is close to reverting from his, it may show a major power shift in the Republican Party.

The GOP may not be relevant yet to the country yet, and as many of you point out; most of you absolutely blame the GOP for every problem we have, and will have [even if it's a new problem under Obama!!!], it shows the first steps of the re-organization of the GOP, and a huge power shift of the GOP brass

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   June 3rd, 2009 4:21 pm ET

Limbaugh is just as much a bigot (likely more so) than she and the rest of the country. He hates liberals and those not like him. I know that there are people that I don't like; I just don't certain individuals; groups aren't to be hated. I would like to see these pundits like him and Ann "I'm really a self hating liberal" Coulter run for office and win - then they'll see how hard it is to govern. I could watch them voted out of office after one term.

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   June 3rd, 2009 4:20 pm ET

Make up your mind Boss Limbaugh. You're the defacto leader of the Republican Party. You can't show any weakness in the eyes of liberals. Start eating your words Newt and Rush.

patNY   June 3rd, 2009 4:19 pm ET

Wait, this doesn't make sense – first Rush blasted Sotomayor for her comment that her background would be important in decision making. I think this guy needs a pill again.

phoenix86   June 3rd, 2009 4:16 pm ET

Be careful Rush, you're in danger of sounding like a republican. You were so entertaining when you were sounding like the typical democrat.

Angie in Pa   June 3rd, 2009 4:16 pm ET

Flip floppers in full force today!

Hmmm maybe it will make Obama wonder why everyone is being so apologetic all of a sudden. Look I didnt have anything against this woman, because i dont know enough about her to judge. sure wish the LIberals could think that way. I have never in my life seen such hatred and venom from the Left…… Have you people been so miserable all these years? Maybe you need to get a life and enjoy the good things that we do have in life and stop trying to be so hateful to others. You may find if you do that , that you may actually like yourself!

Uhh.... I think you have it reversed. Can I see your voter registration card? I need to burn it.

craig upland   June 3rd, 2009 4:15 pm ET

rush's positions are tubs of lard....

jane doe   June 3rd, 2009 4:14 pm ET

He calls her a racist, and then says ""I don't know that it will ever happen, but if you know, the opportunity to get somebody like her, she's a Catholic, she's a devout Catholic, she's a Hispanic Catholic, Puerto Rican, they tend to be devout" as a basis for his decision making.

I think Rush may be the stupidest man on earth, and I will never, ever understand why anyone would listen to him, whatever their political views are.

Charlie in Maine   June 3rd, 2009 4:13 pm ET

Oh damn now you've got me wondering what is wrong with her if that pompus wind-bag says he could support her. Actually I still support her because I have faith in my president.

So if supporting her means Rush and I are on the same side I will just plug my nose to avoid Limbaugh's intellectual stench and stay true to Sotomayor.

Vic of New York   June 3rd, 2009 4:13 pm ET

What! Rush the "Extreme Right Wing Terrorist" backs off (somewhat on SotoMayor?

Hey neo-cons – it looks like your hero is not so stupid as you! I prefer the racist comments myself - bring it on!

Why? Because I plan to go to Arizona and Colorado and New Mexico for the next election, and let all of our Latino voters know what Republiicans really think of them!

Steph   June 3rd, 2009 4:12 pm ET

Well, now that the Republican Senators have their marching orders from their boss...let's move on to the confirmation hearings.

A registered republican   June 3rd, 2009 4:12 pm ET

Somebody needs to stick a pin in this big bag of bad air.

Patty   June 3rd, 2009 4:11 pm ET

Tell the CNN typist to use spell-check on his/her work . . .

Jane   June 3rd, 2009 4:11 pm ET

..."she's a Hispanic Catholic, Puerto Rican, they tend to be devout, she hasn't got a record on this."

Rush, this sounds racist to me – aren't you the "pot" calling the "kettle black? It's too bad you can't ever say anything that does not contain a slam in it.

What a joke!

Tim   June 3rd, 2009 4:10 pm ET

Who cares what her stance on abortion is. Honestly, even if Roe v. Wade was overturned, things would not change much...the states where abortions are performed would keep it legal, and the states that already do everything possible to prevent it would make it illegal. Most people would not see a difference as a practical concern.

And besides, the feds could always just pass a law in Congress.

worriedmom   June 3rd, 2009 4:10 pm ET

MsDp   June 3rd, 2009 4:10 pm ET

Wow, this is really a joke. It's call reverse psychology and I hope Rush is the one who is fooled.

gl, Pittsburgh   June 3rd, 2009 4:10 pm ET

Wow! President Obama is starting to have an effect on all these racist loud months. Peace at last – Check mate.

sms29s   June 3rd, 2009 4:10 pm ET

Well now I guess the Senate can confirm her. Thank you, Rush. That's really generous of you. Does anyone else think this looks as though he's losing his grip on the reins of power?

No Incumbents 2010   June 3rd, 2009 4:09 pm ET

Rush is the dumbest GOP commentator ever. Knows nothing about what it takes to be a good Supreme Court justice. Interesting how many GOP leaders have not condemned Rush's remarks about being a racist.

kay   June 3rd, 2009 4:09 pm ET

Carlo, please also check your usuage and spelling.

hongli   June 3rd, 2009 4:08 pm ET

What a JERK!!!!!!! How can a human being change his mind so many times. This proves to the world that Rush Limbaugh is a complete RACIST and lives on the worst drugs that exist in the United States of America. Everyone with common sense knew this change was not coming from his heart but a rebuke by his own Repugs. TOO late Rush ---The entire world knows you hate blacks and latinos.

ron   June 3rd, 2009 4:07 pm ET

What a loser! these people have no shame. Mississippi mike you buffoon where is your apology?

kay   June 3rd, 2009 4:07 pm ET

Your writer should review and edit before he prints.

NC=Blue in 2008   June 3rd, 2009 4:06 pm ET

As they say down south – Someone got a good talkin' to. LOL!!! First Newt, now Rush....who's next?

Jeff   June 3rd, 2009 4:05 pm ET

Why are we still paying attention to Limbaugh?

Although if anybody were to have a unique insight on the legal system, it may be Limbaugh, with his previous legal run-ins.

Dont blame me   June 3rd, 2009 4:05 pm ET

Come on CNN.

Print the REST of Rush's comments, why don't you??????

As usual, you are only printing what suits you and NOT all of the FACTS.

Shame on yoy CNN.

carlo   June 3rd, 2009 4:04 pm ET

Does anyone at CNN know how to use spell check? There are numerous spelling errors in this ticker, but I digress.

Who cares if Rush approves? You act like he has the Good Housekeeping Seal of approval stamp or something. He's a fat, uneducated, uncouthed, undignified, tasteless, racist, blowhard. I mean that with all sincerity.

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   June 3rd, 2009 4:03 pm ET

What is this, back track day? First the Grinch, now the Boss! lol
