Limbaugh ready to support Sotomayor?

Limbaugh could support Sotomayor, but said he still thinks she is a racist.
Limbaugh could support Sotomayor, but said he still thinks she is a racist.

(CNN) - A week after calling Sonia Sotomayor a "racist" in reference to her 2001 "wise Latina" remarks, conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh said Wednesday he's now open to supporting President Obama's Supreme Court nominee.

"I can see a possibility of supporting this nomination if I can be convinced that she does have a sensibility toward life in a legal sense," Limbaugh said on his radio program.

Limbaugh's statement comes the same day former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who himself derided Sotomayor as a "racist" last week, wrote in an op-ed that he regretted his choice of words.

On his show Wednesday, Limbaugh said his potential support of Sotomayor stems from the nominee's unclear stance on abortion coupled with the fact that she is a Catholic.

"I don't know that it will ever happen, but if you know, the opportunity to get somebody like her, she's a Catholic, she's a devout Catholic, she's a Hispanic Catholic, Puerto Rican, they tend to be devout, she hasn't got a record on this. Normally liberals do have a record," Limbaugh said.

But, unlike Gingrich, the conservative talker did not back away from his contention Sotomayor is a racist.

I didn't know why he retracted it," Limabaugh said of Gingrich. "What is it? It's racism, reverse racism, whatever, but it's still racism, and she would bring a form of racism and bigotry to the court. But as I said yesterday, folks, I'm - I'm - I may look past that.

Meanwhile, Obama officials have said the president has not directly asked Sotomayor how she might rule in abortion rights cases, but California Democrat Dianne Feinstein - who met with Sotomayor Tuesday - said that the judge believes strongly in legal precedent.

"I believe she has a real respect for precedent and … if that is really true then I will agree with her, and I believe it is," said Feinstein, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Rush is insignificant. Plain and simple. Who cares what he thinks.

Rush and some of these Republicans are as radical as this guy that killed the abortion Doctor.......you either believe the way they tell you or they will do you in......that is their motto.....as far as his change of mind on the Latino judge well there is a deep dark reason for it I'm sure.....he is such a big mouth and it is funny now that he has to back track........The republicans have dug a hole so deep by letting these Republican flakes speak out and they just keeps digging them deeper, they will never get out of this with these people (Newt, Rush, Palin) speaking for them....the people want change and we don't need racist old white men running this country any more.......

Did one of my Dem friends talk to one of my Rep friends, who in turn relayed to Rush that this pick was going to be confirmed? And so to save face, he's turning?
And, does it really matter at this point since the Senate has enough people who want it to happen that it will in fact happen?
Having said that, has anyone apologized to Rush lately?

If anyone actually listened to him today. You have to laugh at this RIDICULOUS article. He never flip flopped. He even laughed off the idea of flip flopping when after his discussion about it, MSNBC ran the same story. He even laughed at MSNBC for not quoting him properly just like these pro-Obama writers at CNN. And yes he is an entertainer, even HE DOESN'T dispute that. But he means what he says and he won't back down from this ridiculous attempt to make it seem like he flipped.

I think the reason Republians are warming to her is because there's a growing recognition that she may end up a fairly moderate judge. She's catholic, she comes from a poor background and she's pulled herself up by the bootstraps. Sounds like a closet libertarian to me. and once she's on the court she'll be free to vote her conscience.

Ok. I want to know who got to both Rush and Newt. These two don't change their opinions that easily and that coordinated-ly.

Wonder what the carrot and/or stick was?

Rush needs to start thinking that what happened in Kansas can happen to him. You can't be as hateful and divisive as he is and not see any repercussions from it.

CATHOLIC.......I want you to know that there are more catholics that are Pro Choice, for womens rights, for birth control, for women priests, marriage for priests......so don't count on this woman being against abortions just because she is catholic.

It's either that, or he's in contact with the mother ship.

What a guy! He now says he may support her but he still thinks she's a reverse racist. He also generously added that she's a devout Catholic and a Puerto Rican and that "they" tend to be devout.

Every time this guy opens his big, fat, stupid, idiot mouth I hear a toilet flush.

So: it is acceptable for a Supreme Court Justice to be a racist, as long as she is pro-life? Really? Is there any limit to Republican single issue politics? If the Democratic Party suddenly became pro-life, would that mean that high taxes and deficits were acceptable?

Rush Limbaugh is an idiot, pure and simple. He's gotten such an ego on him that the right believes that he alone is the arbiter for what goes on in this country. Who died and made him God? Apparently somebody did or he'd have been off the air a long time ago and as forgotten as high-button shoes. I think he should read (assuming he CAN read) Judge Sotomayor's full speech. But then again...that might make him think and we all know that people like Limbaugh HATE the idea of thinking!!

Did he get Michael Steele's permission to change his mind? Or was he supposed to get Cheney's? Or was it Gingrich? Or, wait, I thought they were all supposed to get Limbaugh's permission to speak! Oh man, I'm confused about who is running the Republicant party.

The idea behind painting her as being against legal abortion is that the only way she would not be confirmed is if Democrats vote against her. It's a Hail-Mary pass on their part, but it's all they have.

Rush is too fat, uneducated and ill informed to be scary. He is being played for the "reverse intellect" that he is. He would be better served to stay behind the curtain in dittohead lala land. Whenever he rears his ugly head back into the national spotlight, he becomes a laughingstock or has to retract his assinine or offensive comments. He looks as if he's a few cheeseburgers and fries from keeling over. I'm sure there will be thousands of other rightwing nut radio hosts to take his place.

Limbaugh and Gingrich in the same day? Who got to them? GOP elected reps? Who told them to back off? I guess it wasn't working and the potential of losing the Latino vote forever scared the hell out of the GOP!
