Alvino, what rock have you been under? Democrats were bashing Bush as soon as he took office, even worse than the bashing that Obama is receiving. Democrats filibustered pretty much everything they could. Republicans aren't playing as low as you think they are. Compared to dems, they're playing a really high road.

gl, Pittsburgh   June 3rd, 2009 12:33 pm ET

Republicans are always taking someone remark out of content and leaving out the main part like they did with Mrs. Obama statement. It is what the GOP are good at enticing hate.

Treat her like Obama treated Roberts and Scalia   June 3rd, 2009 12:32 pm ET

So Barry, Gibbs and Sotamayor all say that she used a poor choice of words and all is forgiven by yoy Obama sheep, but Newt softens his stance and apologizes for his choice of words and ALL REPUBLICANS ARE RACIST?

Was Ted Kennedy a RACIST when on day one of Clarence Thomas being nominated he ran to the Senate floor and made up a bunch of lies about him?

was Joe Biden racist when he said that "Thomas is only on the Supeme court because he is black"?

Don't bother hypocrites, not only have I forgotten more than any of you you brainwashed sheep know, I sleep well knowing unlike you Obamabots, I can read and comprehend without spewing the Huffington post/Keith Olbermann talking points.

One and done barry, bahhhhhhhhhhhhh, bahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

How many white people in this country have EVER suffered from racism? If they did they would stop these repugnant remarks on Judge Sotomayor.

Ken in NC   June 3rd, 2009 12:32 pm ET

Newt G. did express his thoughts and that is what he should have done. It is the best way he can help the Democratic Party. If he did not feel that Judge Sotomayor was a racist then he would have not claimed that she was.

Newt spoke his mind and that was good because now people know his real feelings and the same applies to Bubba Bimbaugh. Newt should have know better but Limbaugh can be excused as he knows no better. I mean this is a man, Rush, that went to college for 2 semesters and one summer and according to his mother, "he flunked everything", even a modern ballroom dancing class.

Calista   June 3rd, 2009 12:30 pm ET

@ Liberal4Obama

As a black women, I have found MY republican party to be more accepting than the democratic party. I listen to Rush everyday and appreciate his focus on the individual regardless of race while the democrats will spend their time preaching about the plight of black america. I'm black and I am successful. I did that on my own without help from the government and I don't want the government to give away what I have earned to people who blame their lack of motivation on any race. That is why I am a Republican and did NOT vote for Mao Tse Obama.

Osama Bin Laden and the right wing nuts have so much in common. They want to see Obama fail.

Actually, liberal screeds against Republicans sound exactly like the press releases Osama puts out on Al Jazeera.

Dawn in Pa   June 3rd, 2009 12:30 pm ET

Newt Gingrich is no longer in Congress. He has nothing to do with the conformation of Judge Sotomayor. Let that up to the the Senate and then if and when they confirm her. I applaud President Obama on his choice.

Has anyone said something in their lives that they wish they can take back? Well that makes you human...

Lets see what happens within the next couple of months, and then she could be on the SCOTUS and be ready to start on the First Monday in October.

Teleprompter of the U.S.A.   June 3rd, 2009 12:29 pm ET

It's funny how those the likes of Gingrich, Limbaugh, and the GOP in general calling Sotomayor a racist! These are the same people who don't tolerate anyone who doesn't look and think like them.
-------------------------------–

Yes, I remember liberals' tolerance when Clarence Thomas was up for appointment.

HumbleServant   June 3rd, 2009 12:27 pm ET

Perhaps now the Repugnicans will make some attempt to keep their pet Newt on a shorter leash. Its wonderful to see the leadership of this party; Rush, Newt and Dick doing everything they can to demonstrate how viscious, narrow-minded and desperate they and their party of No really are. Let's see if they can drop below 20% in the next few years.

Mr. Gingrich (Not Congressman or Speaker, thankfully) obviously forgot the old but true adage, "It is better to keep silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt."

THE ONLY THING WE HAVE TO FEAR IS FEAR ITSELF.

Why is everyone so SCARED about this woman's credentials and her statement about being hispanics? WHITES have been doing and saying the same thing for DECADES!!!

So PUH-LEEZE stop with the attacks. It's baseless. If you read or heard her entire comment, then YOU'D KNOW THAT!! DAH!!!

Whites need to GET OVER themselves, they always want to have their cake and eat it too, but when someone else beats them to the punch, GUESS WHAT? All of a sudden, they don't like it.

White America is always trying to change the rules of the GAME when minorities BEAT THEM at their own game or play by the same rules as WHITE have for DECADES!!!

Give me a freaking break!!!

Independent thinker   June 3rd, 2009 12:14 pm ET

Based on these postings, most of you dims and left-wing haters are too stupid to recognize your own hypocrisy. Leahy attacks her critics for "the most vicious attacks" – you have a short memory, Leahy, or you, like most 'hypocrats' conveniently forget what the liberal hate machine has repeatedly tried to do republican-nominated justices. What sickens me most about your double-standard is that you remind me of a spoiled and stupid person who has cheated for years but now you have the power you want everyone to play by your rules. If a white man had said the same thing, you would be calling for a public execution!

Ken in NC   June 3rd, 2009 12:13 pm ET

Judge Sotomayor says she made use of a poor choice of words. Well she is right. It was a poor choice of words. Newt spoke making use of a poor choice of words. Shoudn't he be allowed to apologize for his poor choice of words? The answer is NO. You see they say that Judge Sotomayor used a poor choice of words but she ment what she said. Well Newt did the same thing and he ,ent what he said too.
He can retract his words and it is ok and he can go on but she cannot retract her words and move on. WOW What a double standard.

Gracie   June 3rd, 2009 12:11 pm ET

Of course you are Sessions, what a bunch of clowns. Republicans are NOT fooling the American people with this HOGWASH. They have done nothing but OBSTRUCT this Sotomayor's nomination since day one. The theatrics is nothing but a SMOKE SCREEN, when behind the scenes these same Republicans are causing CHAOS and plotting on stonewalling President Obama's pick.

It really funny to watch Republicans attempt to "play nice" when their true fangs are clearly showing. LOL.

Race angle on abortion?
Liberal dog poop that is what you are Sir!

indiana voter   June 3rd, 2009 12:06 pm ET

I don't think that she herself is a racist, but she made a racist comment and that should disqualify her, if you go by the liberal democrats standards that they used against Sens. Trent Lott and George Allen. Both of these senators made jokes that were not meant to be racist and they were hammered by the liberal democrats and the media over it and it ruined their political careers. How is this situation any different? Unless liberal democrats feel they have a right to say racist things and get away with it. There is a HUGE double standard being set forth by the liberal democrat party! No one should be surprised though, as they used the race card many times in the last election to get into the White House, rather than run on experience.

rodlang   June 3rd, 2009 12:04 pm ET

I know liberals want to make a big deal out of all this but not a single GOP Senator...the people that will actually vote...has said anything derogatory of Ms. Sotomayor. They may not agree with her but the GOP Senators have been respectful and even complimentory. Sessions has complimented her. Doesn't mean he has to vote for her...remember that Obama voted against both Roberts and Alito.

donttreadonme   June 3rd, 2009 12:02 pm ET

Sotomayer may not be a racist but her comments certainly were. If she was a white male Repub making those same comments she would not have been appointed….end of story.

Since Hispanics are an important voting segment she will be appointed. Obama had to know this would create controversy.

gl, Pittsburgh   June 3rd, 2009 12:01 pm ET

President Obama have set many traps that the racist Repubicans just couldn't avoid. President Obama play chess better than any body I have every meet. President Obama got the Republicans walking on eggs shileds right about now and I am glad just maybe we can get some peace for a change.

Tim C   June 3rd, 2009 11:57 am ET

If CNN and the rest of main stream media would acknowledge that the whole quote was: "I would HOPE that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life," people would realize that this statement isn't racist at all. The convenient omission of "I would hope" is what has kept this sham going as long as it has.

sms29s   June 3rd, 2009 11:56 am ET

I can only hope that Newt runs for President. Then we can trot out his sister and his first two wives to vouch for his character, compassion, past statements and actions. And we can resurrect some of his old lamebrain ideas to haunt him–such as taking all children on welfare and warehousing them in orphanages. Yes, Newt, you should not have called her names.

Fair is Fair   June 3rd, 2009 11:56 am ET

The judge herself said she "used a poor choice of words". OK, fine. If she chose her words poorly, and people are willing to turn the other cheek, why won't they turn the other cheek when Gingrich chose poor wording?

sms29s   June 3rd, 2009 11:55 am ET

Can't wait to hear Rush's rabid slobbering response to THIS situation.
Can't WAIT to hear Gingrich try to justify HIS slip of etiquette while trying to continue to slam Ms. Sotomayor for hers, and I REALLY CAN'T WAIT for her to take her place on the Supreme Court!

Liberal4Obama   June 3rd, 2009 11:54 am ET

The republican party is full of people who are intellectually dishonest. Too bad for republicans women and minorities already found out they are not welcome in their party.

The republican tent is so small not even republican moderates fit in it anymore... Powell, Specter (who actually became a democrat)

gl, Pittsburgh   June 3rd, 2009 11:52 am ET

It is too late becasue the demanaged have already taking effect. This man is a blantant racist becasue it take one to no one. He have made several racist statements one too many times.

Calista   June 3rd, 2009 11:51 am ET

She made a racist comment. I don't believe it she meant it to be racist but she does believe her comment to be patially true. People do make those mistakes, just not maliciously. The same thing happens when people assume I like fried chicken. Newt was correct in calling her out for it and backed off after she explained that she would have worded it differently. And, Mike on June 3rd, 2009 11:30 am ET, are you aware the GOP supported Clarence Thomas when the democrats did not?
You are doing the same thing when you single out "the GOP" and assume Newt and Rush don't like people who are different from them.
The GOP supports those who are qualified to do a job and I don't believe that people who are not qualified should be hired because they are not white.

VON BISMARK,Vienna.   June 3rd, 2009 11:50 am ET

Newt was serious when he made the remark. As unforgiving as his GOP peers are he should not also be forgiven. They are after the head of Nancy Pelosi in trying to cover their war crimes.

Lynn   June 3rd, 2009 11:47 am ET

When will CNN apologize for their nonstop coverage of this isolated quote, treating Gingrich's hateful comments as fact and truth and their complicity in the unjustified character assassination of this qualified judge ?

Steve   June 3rd, 2009 11:46 am ET

I found Sessions comments to be illuminating. I agree with him that some judges on the SJC...Thomas, Alito, Kennedy being three....seem to feel empowered to bring their personal beliefs and political biasis into the interpretation of the laws, statutes, and Constitution. RIght on Sessions! It's about time the conservapubs admitted to this.

jerry   June 3rd, 2009 11:45 am ET

there has got to be something wrong with a news organisation that prints anything gingrich a disgraced senator who not only disgraced the senate but the people of this country, this is why our country is the way it is today.

Kevin B   June 3rd, 2009 11:43 am ET

Mr Obama and team continue to run circles around the GOP which is fumbling and snarling like a wounded animal.

Thanks Mr Gingrich, Cheney and Limbaugh for doing what no democrat could ever dream of doing and that is to destroy the GOP credability for years to come.

Ken   June 3rd, 2009 11:42 am ET

I hope Sessions and Gingrich got permisssion from Limbaugh to backpedal like this. Otherwise the issue will just get muddled again with more kowtowing to their preening rightwing lord, as the far right contiunues to consolodate its hold on a wasting [R] party.

I personally enjoy all this kowtowing and consolodation. Once the [R] party is densly consolodated with only the far-est of the right, and the most moronic and delusional of the few-believers, then it should be wrapped with brightly colored paper, festooned with a bow, tied to a rock and thrown into a very deep lake.

Char   June 3rd, 2009 11:42 am ET

If you ask me, the whole GOP feels the same way Newt does about Sotomayor, but are too coward to say it out loud! They do not think the rest of us are smart enough to figure that out.

Melissa   June 3rd, 2009 11:41 am ET

Personally, I don't believe Gingrich for a second. The only reason he's apologizing is because people are up in arms over what he said. Its to save his own hide. He should never have opened his fat mouth in the first place.

Kevin B   June 3rd, 2009 11:41 am ET

It is sad that republican party has to rely on political hacks like Gingrich and Limbaugh to push thier agenda, while the world passes the GOP by.

Mr Obama and team continue to run circles around the GOP which is fumbling and snarling like a wounded animal.

Thanks Mr Cheney and Bush and Rove for doing what no democrat could ever dream of doing and that is to destroy the GOP for years to come.

katiec   June 3rd, 2009 11:39 am ET

Sessions is just playing the political game. He, along with his fellow republicans, have made such ridiculous, distorted comments in the past one cannot put much importance in anything that they have to say. Their party first, anything to win mentallity far overrides recognition or respect, their lack of concern for the future of our
country, wanting our country to fail is as unAmerican as a politician can get.
Actions speak much louder than words.

Nelson Colorado Springs Co.   June 3rd, 2009 11:38 am ET

This is amazing, Judge Sonia Sotomayor has been a judge for many years one line from 2001speech, Gingrich and conservative host Rush Limbaugh called Sotomayor's racially divisive remarks. Now when Judge Sotomayor "said the statement was a bad choice word" move on, Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh said Judge Sotomayor is a racist judge then Gingrich change his mine saying he shouldn't have said The word 'racist' should not have been applied to Judge Sotomayor as a person. WHAT UP WITH THIS. A POOR CHOICE OF WORD?????? FOOT IN MOUTH. F. I. M.

Cromwell   June 3rd, 2009 11:38 am ET

Don't expect Sessions to rebuke Rush Limbaugh for calling Judge Sotomayer a racist? He wouldn't dare challenge the Boss.

Watching Sessions squirm and dodge, in an interview Sunday, when he was asked if he disagreed with Limbaugh, was comical.

Jeff   June 3rd, 2009 11:37 am ET

Sessions and McConnell are racists and so are most Repukes.

rdw   June 3rd, 2009 11:35 am ET

Let me see if I understand this correctly. Newt tweets, creates political firestorm, with who? politicians!! what happened to the people? are not their reps in government outraged over these comments as well. I as a citizen am worried about these comments as well as other things and decisions made by this women and my reps in Washington are not. Politicians did not vote to put you there I did and if you want to stay there I suggest you start acting like it as well. And I am about sick and tired of Gibbs flat out lies and threats to our elected officials and the American people, Quote "I think it is probably important for anybody involved in this debate to be exceedingly careful with the way in which they've decided to describe different aspects of this impending confirmation," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs". Why? will the politicians be branded terrorist in the eyes of the Government? Even Sen. Sessions agrees "about the serious issues that the nations faces and the court faces." but not what they said that some find alarming speech by a pending judge on the Supreme Court. Give me a break, do all politicians back down when their constitutes rag them.?

mike   June 3rd, 2009 11:34 am ET

Come on people lets be honest, the reason republicans are dead set against abortion is because 85percent of the women who gets abortions are white women, there was 1.2million abortions performed last year, out of that 1million of those abortions was white women, since roe vs wade was overturned white women have had 32million abortions, minorities only 5million.white people are 62percent of the population in america,if roe vs wade wasnt overturned white people would have been 70percent of the population today, thats a hudge difference,in the republicans knows it,so i wish the mainstream media along with the republican party would be honest in just tell the truth, that the only reason they care about this abortion issue is because the white population is shrinking at an unbelievable rate, now if minorities was having 85percent of the abortions, the media or the republicans wouldnot care about abortion,in fact the republicans would be pro-abortion just think about it people.

Mike   June 3rd, 2009 11:30 am ET

Obama Supporting Liberal Wussy

D. Tree   June 3rd, 2009 11:16 am ET

Throughout all of this its becoming clear that President Obama has made a choice that people on both sides of the aisle can agree to. Well done, Mr. President!

Carl from MI   June 3rd, 2009 11:15 am ET

Yes... now tell Newt and Rush and the rest of the GOP loudmouths to shut up so you can do your job without having to listen to all the stupid comments from the GOP peanut gallery!!

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   June 3rd, 2009 11:12 am ET

Sen. Sessions realizes that Newt's comments will be attached to every republican on the Judiciary Committee. If Newt feels that way, they all must feel that way. I'm sure Sen. Sessions shares Mr. Gingrich's point of view, but he can't say so out publicy because of his position on the Judicial Committee.
