Sanford will accept stimulus funds on Monday

(CNN) – Reacting to the South Carolina Supreme Court's ruling that he must take $700 million in federal stimulus funds dedicated to education, Gov. Mark Sanford said Thursday he will abide by the court's decision and sign paperwork requesting the money on Monday.

But Sanford, a possible 2012 presidential candidate, also called the ruling "terribly flawed" and said the decision reinforced his long-held belief that South Carolina's political system places too much authority in the hands of the state legislature.

"We have a fundamentally flawed governmental structure that impedes and hurts progress in the state of South Carolina, and by extension impedes and hurts the quality of peoples' lives in South Carolina," he said at a press conference in Columbia.

Pointing to California as an example of "an absolute disaster case when it comes to fiscal stewardship," Sanford lamented that his state missed a chance to show other states "a different way than simply taking this money and spending it."

Still, he called the prolonged fight over the money an "incredibly important debate" over the balance of power and taxpayer rights.

I guess he's not happy with any role but plantation master.

This country was founded on the power of legislative bodies, not dictators.

Thus Governor is just crazy, out of touch with state's constituents. Hello, take the money and invest it in the well being of people. Republicans are just so extreme....

Republicans like a strong central government or even a strongman – as long as one of them is in charge. In South Carolina, the problem seems to be that Republicans hold too much power, not that the legislature does.

very nice, the state of South Carolina could always use a helping hand; now to the question of the day, concerning the use of speed cameras on our highways as a speed deterant; of course the great janet napolitanio of Arizona favors it, because, as she says, it will bring in $90 million in revenue, (it actually brought in 20 million ), and the Ins. Intitute of traffic safety said it's for the good of the people. BUT, why don't the same people who are supposedly looking out for our safety, make a helmet law universal for cycles, or require all automobiles and trucks have amber flashers at the rear of their vechicles, seems like a big brother idea going bad..but, maybe S. Carolina can get the cameras with there new money..

It's too bad Sanford can't keep all the students in the South Carolina educational system as dumb as he is! Thank God for having Stephen Colbert as a better role model than Mark Sanford!!!

700 Million for EDUCATION!!! Is there any better investment than investing in children??? In your future??? Investing in tomorrow's leaders???

This guy is sure taking care of your state and it's affairs, South Carolina... don't forget to give him the boot first chance you get!!

Your children and their futures will thank you...

What they don't point out in this article is that the $700 million is only a portion of the $3 billion of stimulus money that he otherwise accepted without question. That makes him more conservative than his other governors-running-for-president rivals who show their 'fiscal conservatism' by rejecting less than 5% of stimulus money. But Sanford also took part, accepted some $2 billion anyway, and he doesn't call THAT wasteful. Nor does he call his own state's already disastrous finances for the past years during his watch disastrous. Hypocrite!

California's highest marginal tax rate on the wealthiest individuals and corporations is a whopping 10.3%

The states fiscal problems could be solved by raising that just 2 percent to 13.3%.

Our governor is trying to say the voters rejected tax increases.

He is wrong. At least as far as I'm concerned.

I rejected regressive SALES TAX increases. That hits the poor and middle classes worst.

Are you trying to tell me that someone who makes 5 million/year can not afford to pay 2 % more in taxes?

Mr. Sanford, our state is in trouble because republicans like yourselves won't raise taxes. Instead, they want to cut funding to education. They want to make all state employees take unpaid vacation. They want to cut funding to the counties. etc. etc. etc.

PEOPLE SHOULD BE ANGRY. especially at obstructionist republicans like yourself.

Marc Sanford's dedeat by the Supreme Court of South Carolina underscores the primary tenet of the stimulus package. It's the duty of government to help its people in severe financial hardship. Nothing cna be more dire than the situation this country currently faces. Un fortunately politically for the GOP should this work at its optimum level then they as a political party would be frozen out. Historically, the last time that happened was during the Great Depression. The similarities and the political ramifications are just as acute now as they were 77 years ago.

    Mr. Sanford,

"We have a fundamentally flawed governmental structure that impedes and hurts progress in the state of South Carolina, and by extension impedes and hurts the quality of peoples' lives in South Carolina"...

Really? Is that because you only want the wealthy to be educated?
