Sanford's stimulus battle comes to likely end

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford had resisted taking the federal stimulus money.
South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford had resisted taking the federal stimulus money.

(CNN) – South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's prolonged campaign to reject $700 million in federal stimulus funds - an effort that earned him praise from some national conservatives but also angered many in his own state - appears to have come to an end.

The South Carolina Supreme Court has ruled that the governor must accept the federal cash designated for education funding.

Sanford, who might run for president in 2012, had resisted taking the money even when the Republican-controlled state legislature passed a budget that included the funds.

The court on Thursday stated that "under South Carolina law, the General Assembly has the sole authority to direct the appropriation of funds and, therefore, is the entity which decides whether the State desires to receive the funds."

Students and education officials in the state filed lawsuits last month demanding that the governor take the money, and Sanford tried to have the lawsuits merged and heard in federal court. On Monday, however, a federal judge rejected that attempt, and said that the South Carolina Supreme Court must decide what to do.

Sanford has scheduled a press conference on the decision this afternoon. He said earlier this week that he will not appeal the South Carolina Supreme Court's decision.

Thank God For The Court! Unemployment here 2nd only to Michigan...education always in the toilet...highways/transportation system in ruins... Sanford played all the right cards to advance his own aspirations in the GOP. He gets to be all self-righteous and seem to have a backbone for his audition for the GOP's presidential nomination...well played for sure. Shame when school children have to sue the governor of their state to get their schools repaired or keep them open while he claims to be "protecting the future of our children and grandchilren"...what about their present? Their future won't matter if they don't make it there.

This governor has gone rogue, and he has put his personal interest above the South Carolina constituents. The regionalized deep south republican party are going to ruin their states if the people don't wake up.

Just to educate you. They have TONS of open space, and have for YEARS. They just refuse to do anything with it. But when you ask them to turn in THOSE leases for OTHER leases, they again flinch and say "no".

Ultimately it comes down to a few select oil dirt bags trying to lock up ALL potential oil producing zones before doing anything with what they already have. The republicans are all for this, they believe in total monopolies in control of our land. But the rest of us want to see something from what they got, before they get more. Or if you aren't able to use what you got already, then trade it IN and NO catches about it, it's gone forever once they turn it in.

In a nutshell, Use it Or Lose It, before asking for more.

Who would ever want this guy running our country when he refuses to help people in his own state? He is a selfish person and I don't see how he ever bacame Governor of any state. We all saw the condition of that school by the railroad track. What kind of person would stand by and watch children try to learn in such a terrible place. It wasn't fit for anything and should have been bulldozed years ago. How can this guy sleep at night? Apparently, he has no conscience. I say kick him to the curb!!

So as an American you're entitled to ruin your state's economy persuing this myth called 'global warming' or 'climate change' or 'AlGore's money maker'? You and your fellow liberals think it is the right of all Americans to sit on our butts and let the government take care of everything for us. Then when (as they have in California) they realize that they've created all these wasteful programs and can't afford to function, you libs go crying about how you are not being taken care of. How about this, "arithmetic" (and all you other libs): Get up off your butt, get a real job, stop looking to the government for EVERYTHING, realize that you, and you ALONE, should be the main driving force in what you do with you life, not some over-inflated egos sitting in Washington DC.

...But then that would require to actually do something besides sitting around all day doing nothing.

Wow! Sanford doesn't want to take the money?

Well, obviously that's because there are no unemployed people or foreclosures or poor people or need for community programs in South Carolina.

What are we waiting for? Let's all move there!
Yes, this wise man should definitely run for president. President of what is the question.

Sanford for President! Yea right! He probably will win the South. This is a guy who should not be anyone's Govenor. Sad, for those who speak on fiscal responsibility attempt to withhold from the poor and less fortunate of our society. Amazing! Now you really see why Republicans are the laughing stock of the country.

Once again another Republican official who puts ideology over governing. Too bad the "government is evil" crowd can't stop being stupid long enough to connect the proverbial dots that it was their election of people who turned a deliberate blind eye to regulatory oversight of the financial industry that led to the collapse of our capitalist system that has forced the hand of the federal government to step in and help us after the RepubliKlan morons allowed their Wall Street – Corporate welfare hogs to soak up our 401K, pension plans and savings. NONE of the stimulus would be necessary – anywhere – if that ignorant bunch of racists thugs known as Republican elected officials that have controlled Congress from1994 until they were kicked to the curb in 2006, as aided and abetted by the Whitehouse cabal elected in 2000, had done their jobs in the first place had GOVERNED.

But, sad to say – idiots are still distracted and deluded with the bright shiney object of fear, ignorance and racism.

"Hey CNN Moderator, your liberal ass sucks! What's funniest is that you let all the liberals post their immature and thoughtless comments making them look incredibly stupid. Gee, how many times have I seen "Go away Sarah", while all of the intelligent comments are filtered out most likley because you don't agree with anything anti-Obama."

Go to the FOX NEWS blog. There you can have unlimited race baiting, hatemongering and spill all your ReThuglican ideas. The same ReThuglican ideas which screwed up our country to an economic meltdown. The Dems inherited 15 trillion of debt, thanks to the ReThuglican agenda of small government !!, fiscal irresponsibility, de-regulation of wall street and outsourcing of our jobs.

Wow. Just wow. We all saw this coming. He knew he'd lose, like many of you have already said, and claim moral high ground.

I have a question, seriously, for the Republicans on this board. Do you elect people to office to represent their principles and interests, or yours?

The time has come for right wing confederate ideologues (and racists) like Sanford...

    ...to be rendered politically inert...

...Sanford supports the flying of the flag of our enemy "the Confederacy" in SC...

...Sanford can NEVER be POTUS, unless this country is once again torn asunder...

...The conservatives in this country are seeking to undermine our President, our unity, and our youth...

...the old "dead ones" who long for the days of privilege and white might...

...support the old guard southern traitors like: Sanford, Shelby, Sessions, Graham, McConnel et. al...

...Let's send them all packing, and decimate the treasonous GOP...

In all fairness, you point out some valid points, just slightly hard to see them through the blinders you have on when you start accusing 'liberals' of the wasteful spending.

Case in point, the republicans finally tabled a budget proposal. I say great, let's look at it and truly trim the 'wasteful' spending. The only problem is they specifically said 'let's cap it at inflation allowance'...followed by "but not for the defense, in fact, let's leave defense alone".

When you have halliburton blowing up our bases over seas with their incompetence, and killing our soldiers with their 'cheap fixes' and charging us billions to do it. When you start seeing $800 hammers and $200 hammers. When you see 'no bid' radars to catch illegal aliens at the border actually reporting 'RAIN DROPS' as people crossing the border. Well then I suggest those republicans need to pull their heads out from the dark cave it's in and take a very solid look at how horrid that defense spending is as well. By all means, give me a good military, but don't over charge me for it!

Apply the EXACT same rules to ALL areas of the budget. Until you do that, you are a partisan flake with an agendo to fill the pockets of YOUR people while denying any form of representation to the other 95% of the tax payers.
