(CNN) – Before President Obama had finished his speech in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday calling for "a new beginning" in relations between the United States and the Muslim world, the conversation had moved online.

"I believed every word he said and I am sure he is sincere, but we wants [sic] action not words," read the text of a message sent from Saudi Arabia to a page set up by the administration at America.gov. "We want to feel that America is friend to us [and] not against us. We want to be treated fairly by you."

Obama revolutionized the use of technology during his presidential campaign, and his administration has aggressively used the Web, including popular online-networking tools, to spread his message since he took office in January.

Political observers believe that his administration wants to use the power of the Web to create a more transparent style of governing that will help win public support.

CNN Radio: CNN's Octavia Nasr and John Lisk review the president's speech

"In the spirit of engagement, we invited the international audience to submit comments via text message," reads a page at America.gov, which began sending out text updates as soon as Obama's speech began about 6:10 a.m. ET Thursday.

The service was available only for people living outside the United States. The signup form was available in English, Arabic, Persian and Urdu, and several posts to the site Thursday morning were in languages other than English.

Obama's speech, at the Great Hall at Cairo University to an anticipated crowd of about 3,000, was an effort to improve the image of the United States among Muslims. That image has been tarnished in the eyes of many of the world's estimated 1 billion Muslims who have been critical of the U.S. role in the Middle East over the past few years.

"I'm a Muslim & I'm Proud of You & Every Man Like You Whatever His Religion," read a post from Egypt on a page for the speech on the social networking site Facebook.

More than 1,100 people had signed up at the page by Thursday morning, and more than 100, many from the United States, had posted comments.

"I am feeling a bit bi-polar Mr. President," read a post from Waterloo, Iowa. "Some things you have done make me so mad ... but this made me so proud!"

Administration officials estimate that there are 20 million Facebook users in the Arab countries and is setting up live chats on the site to get a
conversation going online.

The U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem has created a page "[a]s part of our continued efforts to develop and strengthen cooperation with our
Palestinian and international audience."

Action at that page was slower Thursday morning; a discussion thread on expectations for the speech had drawn only four comments, and a post asking for responses to the speech had gotten none.

Candy in West Virginia ... and just why doesn't America deserve this man? Not that I like him. Sounds like you need to move to another country .... since America doesn't deserve anything you described as brilliant and divine. Make up your mind. Are you a true believer in love and peace, or as it sounds a hyprocrite calling Republicans "thugs" and spouting "hate" and "war." Reminder, Candy 9-11 was caused by Islamic murderers who killed thousands of "innocent" decent Americans. Question, why did Obama hide his Muslim heritage during the election?

Amy   June 4th, 2009 3:04 pm ET

TCM, please go back to burying your head. You could use the view, the earth would benefit from the fertilization, and we would all do better without the incomprehensible negativity you so hysterically spew.

Obama and Neville Chamberlain are two peas in a pod. Muslims have shown that they are not willing partners in peace. They are little more than barbarians. Ever notice how Klingon and arabic sound so similar? Come to think of it, Libtalk and teletubbies kinda sound similar to????
------
Umm....ultimately, the United Federation of Planets made peace with the Klingons without going to full blown war...the UFP gained the Klingon respect and honor when the Enterprise C defended a Klingon outpost from Romulan invasion....so, yes there is another way to gain peace without war....and gaining your adversarie's respect and admiration is a good start! Comparing Obama to Chamberlain is like comparing apples to oranges...we're not talking about appeasement to Germany. Get a clue!

SteveD   June 4th, 2009 3:01 pm ET

Leslie:

Obama is the poser per you and you're the hater. All the talk about War being the vehicle to peace I must assume you we be volunteering for military duty.
Probably not. You're like the people you admire Cheney, Rove, Hannity, and Limbaugh that are all for miliary force, but never served and NEVER would. It's alright for others to do their bidding.
Give up the hate it is bad for your health.

Dale   June 4th, 2009 3:00 pm ET

Leslie,
If you are comparing Obama to Ghandi, that comes off as a compliment. Since you obviously intend to tear down BHO regardless of the facts, you should try a different approach.

Ghandi was a great historical hero... someday Obama may be too.

In the words of another wise person, Steven Colbert, "Reality has a well-know liberal bias." ;)

Melissa   June 4th, 2009 3:00 pm ET

Leslie, why do you hate absolutely everything? The world is tired of the attitude you keep spouting. Its time for us to grow up, not continue to behave in the childish way you are promoting.

For all of those who are knocking Leslie@, remember the strong cooperation that North Korea and Iran have shown the US, since Hussein started his apology tours. He in effect stated that Israel and Hamas are both the same, terrorist organizations..

Let's not forget all this ingenious talked that went on during the Carter Admin. Yeah that worked out well for us.

I'm just laughing my butt off because all the Jewish folks that voted for this guy are really getting shafted.

or if u r Jewish,
U ask for it u got it!! Bend over!!!

The speech would have been great if it were written from the standpoint of reality. Same Liberal Utopian philosphy as always. I too want peace and appreciate the gesture but it is nieve at best , dangerous at worst. I hope I am wrong ,but thousands of years of history say I am not. BTW, Bush did not create Muslim hatred for the U.S. Many of you on this board need to read some history , not just select the parts you like.

Ariana   June 4th, 2009 2:57 pm ET

LESLIE: When you're born a MUSLIM, you'll die a MUSLIM. Being a MUSLIM doesn't have to be a follower of Islam. READ and EDUCATE yourself.

Actually NO, just because you're born Muslim doesn't mean you have to stay Muslim, you can convert to anything else you want. Therefore, being Muslim doesn't mean you die Muslim. And the last time I checked being a Muslim IS a follower of the religion of Islam. Just like a Christian is a follower of Christ. I SHOULD KNOW, I AM MUSLIM. Perhaps you should READ and EDUCATE yourself because you don't make any sense! It's really sad how ignorant and uninformed you sound.

JT   June 4th, 2009 2:56 pm ET

Reading over the comments, and as a former life-long conservative – The Republican party is obviously now condensed down to loons, racists, and religious nuts. It is amazing that most of their comments are loaded with jealousy as well. What an embarrassing way to sail at warp speed into oblivion.

obama support team   June 4th, 2009 2:55 pm ET

The GOP doesn't know what they are talking about. All they do is make America feel negative. Even if our president is trying to build America back in good standings with countries abroad, the GOP credibility is null and void with All Americans. They act as though America is unpatriotic. Ask Sean Hannity the whiner who is a socialist because he tries to act like Rush controls this country. He is a coward just like the rest of the GOP.

Candy u said "911 happened on the conservatives (republicans) watch. How did they keep us safe.? "

Just so u r aware 9/11 was planned and prep/dry run under Clinton's watch. The terrorists were here for 3yrs under Clinton and went undetected. With the Bush survelliance program (u know the one where Obama said he was going to discontinue and morons like u agree but now Obama pulled a 180 BECAUSE OBAMA KNOWS IT SAVED U.S. LIVES!!).

So let's lay the blame where it belongs. Remember 9/11 commission said they (Al Qaeda) were at war with us and were were not. Al Qaeda declared war againsts US in 1998. Clinton was the Prez and had numerous opportunity to take UBL out and did NOT!

So stop lying fool because we have not been attacked since and there were numerous threats and operation into play after 9/11 that BUSH THWARTED!!.

Get the facts straight Candy and learn to think for yourself! Put down the kool aid!

The GOP born-againers love war, they are about as far from true Christianity as you can get, in fact, they have one foot in hell and the other on a banana peel. Our President is a man of peace. God Bless him for all he has done to clean up the mess created by the right wing NUT CASES

sifto77   June 4th, 2009 2:53 pm ET

I cringe whenever I hear that he is to make a speech to the "world". Our enemies are clapping their hands in glee–thanking Allah for his weakness and neediness. He seems to spend every waking minute reading teleprompter speeches–probably does them in the mirror the night before.......

Ben   June 4th, 2009 2:53 pm ET

Jessica: "but, keep calling him Hussein, it makes you sound extremely intelligent and im pretty sure only you and your fellow white supremacist friends find it funny"

What's the problem with calling him Hussein? It IS his middle name, isn't it? Why do you Obamabots get so bent out of shape about it? You pepople can't handle any criticism of your hero, can you?

We all must share this earth together, we all have equal freedom to pollute our land, kill our neighboors, and abuse the weak. I chose not to do that, simply because war and hate are the easy path, because peace and love mean hard work and deeper understanding about ourselves and others, and that to me is more rewarding. Words are not just words, speeches are not just speeches. Actions are the end result and I would love to see this landmark speech followed up with some action. There is a fine line between doing the right thing and imposing our way of life on others. We wouldn't want anyone telling the good ol US what to do, why do we think we are better than the rest of the world. Jesus Christ did not think he was btter than the beggar and Confucious knew he could learn from the peasent. My point is we have to coexist and RESPECT each other and we have to find peaceful ways to do so even if it is harder than simply wiping someone out that stands in our way. Bravo Obama, bravo!

Moderate Democrat   June 4th, 2009 2:51 pm ET

Mr. President...your words are beyond an inspiration. I believe we just witnessed one of the speeches that will be taught to our children 200 years from now.

Thank you for making it impossible for the hate filled crap in this country to remain hidden. Thank you for inspiring even them to boil over with hatred to allow us to mark the trash and garbage that is behind all that is bad in this country. Your words inspire the best to move forward, and the worse to screech in terror as they witness their evil and vile hate filled souls emancipated by the good of mankind!

I'm becomming convinced that narrow minded people don't have a clue as to what is a healthy choice for a candidate. Perhaps an inside lesson on how the government is REALLY run will give some insight. You call Obama a socialist but we've been practicing this for decades under previous admins (does welfare ring a bell?). Then your saying that he is apologizing.... well if the slicksters from past administrations had not been so two faced and non-trustworthy we wouldn't look like a crack addict asking for money or favors... deal with it, the country was run into the hole under the old boys club and anyone outside of that has their hands full cleaning up the mess....

Ben   June 4th, 2009 2:50 pm ET

FAYE, NV – He's not attempting to be a rock star, he's being treated like one by the sheeple that voted for him. Get the difference?

Tarheel   June 4th, 2009 2:48 pm ET

Good speech writing by Obama's writers and nice delivery. When it's all said and done though, the problem is still that the Arabs will not recognize Israel's right to exist and there is no one to negotiate with on the Palestinian side. It is simply all or nothing. I will say that the Muslims should like the "We are Wrong and you are Right" approach.

My a– you are a Democrat. There's nowhere you would have learned the word "sheeple" except from hate-filled conservative talk radio or the posts of your compatriots like TCM here. Not to mention the content of your vitriolic posts.

And you know, it doesn't scare anyone to hear you use HUSSEIN instead of Obama's middle name. The 80% of the country who do not identify as Republicans really don't care what his name is, or whether he has Muslim ancestry or even is a Muslim himself (even though he's not). We are not afraid that he's going to turn into a radical, home-grown terrorist. (We already have plenty of those here, and they're all white supremacists like you or anti-abortion activists.)

No. hes very very good at making you and the rest of the party and supporters feel good. Why? because you sought a master and now you have one. You got rid of religion, common sense, principles, values and morals (especially) and you were left with nothing. You then declared that you needed a master to guide you through the resto fyur lives, to control every aspect of your lives because you had nothing else to beleive in. Please try to remembe rthat 58 million Americans did NOT vote for your master. I find it sad really that 100 plus years have been spent trying to get away from "slavery" and all that it entails just to turn around and vote for a man who will enslave you. Sad.

Frank,... Did you know that there were sects of Muslims that helped the Axis powers of WWII to take North Africa? Why do you suppose that that was? Stop trying to blame Bush for everything, it began way before he came along.

Check YOUR history. Did you know that it was the Catholic Church that looked the other way during WWII when the Jews were being murdered? You extreme and phony christians are just as pathetic as the extreme and hateful Muslims.

John M in NoHo CA   June 4th, 2009 2:43 pm ET

Words are very important to establish the new philosophy. That has to come first. Action: I'm not sure what it is we're expected to do to show it. We're not the ones who could stop walking into innocent crowds with bombs strapped on. We're getting out of Iraq soon, but can't just hop out overnight. So words, at least, help start the reversal of attitudes.

Now let's hear the blah blah, Teleprompter, blah blah, all talk, blah blah appease the terrorists, blah blah, he's a socialist, blah blah apology tour, blah blah Fox News crowd chip in.

President Obama is doing the right thing by reaching out to the Muslim world and others. To the wrold America think she is the BOSS of every other country...we are not! Now we have to scale back and look at things with open eyes. 911 was a horrible crime, but remember this was done when the Repulicants where in office..they didn't keep us safe then. Kentucky Muslim   June 4th, 2009 2:34 pm ET

There are Muslim extremists. There are extremists in every religion; have we already forgotten the murder of the Kansas doctor inside a church last Sunday? Extremism does not define any religion.

President Obama wisely recognized the good of Islam while remarking on the bad that Muslims sometimes do. He offered a balanced approach to the supposed conflict between Islam and the western world and suggested some very strong remedies.

I am an American-born Muslim convert who has never lived in a Muslim country, so there is no dichotomy for me between America and Islam. Both are part of my identity, and the identity of my children. I'm very glad that President Obama emphasized our commonalities rather than our differences.

Kind of sad.

This country was formed on liberal ideals, not conservative ones. The conservatives stayed in England. Remember that. Those who refuse to learn from the past are destined to repeat it.

Great response by the Israelis: "Obama's vision is completely out of touch with reality, and this illustrates how naive he is."

Great response by the Palestinians: "This is the same position articulated by Clinton and Bush. So why does this naive president expect a different result?"

Just another American   June 4th, 2009 2:30 pm ET

I downloaded Obama's speech from CNN and read it. I am truly proud to be an American. In my opinion Obama did say the right things. We should not support any action that is wrong even when it is performed by our best ally.. We all know why our country went through 911. It is because of our unilateral support of our beloved ally when the rest of the world deplored their action/s. We need to win back the world confidence so that we all can live in peace. Let's not forget we are a land of immigrants and we need world support to live in peace. I think Obama is trying his best to achieve that.

KirksNoseHair   June 4th, 2009 2:30 pm ET

Another example why we can all be proud to be Americans. President Obama is restoring America to a country we can all be proud of and the rest of the world can look up to with respect and hope. President Obama is truly a great man and we are all blessed by God to have him lead our great nation.

Erik S.   June 4th, 2009 2:27 pm ET

Oh my, here we go again with "America has been tarnished in the eyes of...." man, who cares? Let's all be adult about this. There are always going to be countries that don't like America because of who we are and the freedoms we enjoy, and that's just the way it is. Hey, Muslims have tarnished themselves to me and I don't see them actively trying to make up for the actions of a few losers.

Danny E. Gonzalez   June 4th, 2009 2:27 pm ET

This president is choosing to speak the truth, but also he is choosing to speak about the things we all hold in common, history is a beautiful thing and he uses it masterfully; understand that the way to give respect is to understand the good work people have done and acknowledge them. then be honest about the problems and your position so that people understand you... that is the beginning. both Hillary and Pres. Obama undersant this... she is the best pick for Sec. of State and Pres. Obama's approach is a very smart one. That however does not mean we are trhowing in the moral towel, but it does mean that we are engaging... this is as traditional as America itself... this is historical and it is progressive. let's see where it goes before we cast the first stone.

Perhaps you watched Obama’s speech this morning. He reiterated his position that Iran has the right to develop nuclear energy as long as they prove it is for peaceful purposes. (Just like North Korea promised?) Iran is sitting on enough oil reserves to satisfy their energy needs for hundreds of years. What purpose is their development of nuclear energy? The only reason is to develop the bomb. Iran has supplied Hamas with arms and suicide vests and has stated that their goal is to wipe Israel off the map. This naive president will allow those crazies to develop nuclear weapons! Every president including Clinton has opposed this! Israel will be hit and the war will be on. It is just a matter of time before they hand off a bomb that will destroy New York, Washington, or perhaps Houston. This 47 year old lawyer/community organizer who has never been in a position of leadership is leading us towards disaster. Truly a sad day for our country and the world.

Obama should stand on a street in Hebron or Jericho wearing a yarmulke. he will learn really fast how "peaceful" Palestinians are.

CNN = Moveon.org   June 4th, 2009 2:21 pm ET

The following is a quote from Iran's reaction of Obama's speech:

"Even if they give sweet and beautiful talks to the Muslim nation … that will not create a change," said Khamenei, Iran's most powerful figure with the final say on all matters of state. "Nothing will change with speeches and slogans."

Too bad that the Iranians aren't as stupid as the people here in this country who were swayed by his beautiful talks, speeches, and slogans. It is sad to say, but it looks like the Iranians have a better understanding of who Obama is better than the people who voted for him. Obama, the apologizer-in-chief, is making America look weak, and now is threatening to damage our relationship with Israel by allowing Hamas a seat at the table. The day our nation abandons Israel is the day America begins its huge descent as a country, if Obama hasn't already started that with his economic policies.

Nathan   June 4th, 2009 2:19 pm ET

That was a gutsy speech and soaring oratory. He sounded as much like President of the World as much as President of the U.S. I suspect after his 8 years as President then he will be elected as the new President of the United Nations. Will he be able to resolve the Israel/Palestine conflict? It is hard to say because the parties are so recalcitrant. To hear him approach it with so much confidence and without the bias of most U.S. politicians was refreshing. Here's to Hope.

Wow, a lot of bagging on Leslie for stating a fact of World History, one that apparantly escaped many of you while you were taking "sensitivity" and "vicitmology" courses in college.

Peace is not defined as "the absence of formally-declared war."

Five-thousand-years of recorded human history have shown that peace can never be "negotiated" through "diplomacy." Peace must be begged for by the loser.

Japan comes to mind.

You can talk about "hope and change" all you'd like, but you cannot deny history. The only thing that has ever stopped aggressors and marauders is a brutal display of force, for it is the only thing marauders comprehend or respect. Doubt me? Ask Gaddafi.

To the greater pan-Islamic world, diplomacy and negotiations are viewed as weakness, much like a dog showing his belly.

Neel   June 4th, 2009 2:16 pm ET

As I read these comments, I see a recurring theme in some of them that points to "the problem that is Islam". May I say, as an agnostic, that I respectfully disagree. All of the worlds religions, at some point, have caused a war. None of them are perfect, and none of them are always right. In the case of the middle east, their religion hasn't caused this modern day war. Outside of a few radical groups that have practiced Wahhabism and other forms of Islam, the religion as a whole preaches peace. The reason for this modern day war can be traced back to OUR interference with the Saudi government and their subsequent funding (at our behest) of the Afghan-Russian conflict. Do you realize that the conservative heroes of our day- Reagan, Bush 1, Cheney- indirectly funded al-Qaida?? Interesting turn of events.

People let's be serious. We needed a leader that people will listen too. We have been blessed with a brilliant Leader even if you don't like what's he's saying. At least he's willing to say the things that everybody knows to be true.
To call 60 million people crazy is sort of dumb especially when the alternative is screamin' "drill baby drill"!
How can anyone be upset with a Leader that states we want peace for Muslim and Christians, but he will defend the United States of America.
Some folks got a lot of growing up too do.

Tell me, how many years USA has been in Iraq and what did yours country get out of it apart from over 4,000 Americans men and women die and 100,000 innocent lives has been lost. and please don't tell me that Iraq is at peace because if they are then you won't hear suicide bombing on daily basis. USA is failing in Iraq and will never win especially now Cheney admitted that Iraq has nothing to do with 9/11 but GW and Cheney invaded that country anyway.

If I remember correctly, USA did try to achieved peace in Vietnam and what did USA got out of it?

Oh....and Obama is a joke. Didn't know were a Muslim nation. Remember that before you go to sleep tonight.

We have to learn to live together as one people I don't like Israel however they do have a right to exist. some of us need to change their way of thinking. You know who you are.

SCARED OF SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAN YOURSELF, THAT IS WHY THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS SUFFERING! LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES! i have to live with them too and i'm not republican

Leslie you must have lost your job under Bushes watch. Are you mad because your job was shipped overseas. Go cry on Bush and Cheney's shoulders. One thing about you Republicans, you like to tout that you are Christians going by what the bible says, but all I see is hatred from you people. I would not want to be in your shoes when judgment day comes. Get a life, better yet find your soul.

Kenneth Villa   June 4th, 2009 2:05 pm ET

Wonderful, inspiring speech. Its great to finally have an intelligent president who can inspire. One person can't do it alone though. I am tired of uneducated, senseless comments by Newt, Rove, and Limbaugh. I for one, want a strong Republican party to provide solutions because it helps make our democracy better. However, all they have been doing is offering bitterness and opinions that barely have any factual basing. I hope the Republican Party, and some of its followers, can change and think about solutions instead of name calling. It's either that, or they can go back to 2nd grade where it belongs.

Muckinello   June 4th, 2009 2:05 pm ET

Good job Mr. President and thanks for the Leslies of this world. You need someone to be so dead wrong to make sure we keep on the right path of democracy and diplomacy. War never accomplished anything and is antithetical to peace.

President Obama is a GREAT man. All those out here who has nothing but negative things about him are nothing more than hateful people and bigots, PERIOD. My case in point is, those some people out here that are bad mouthing Obama, must had been a sleep over the last 8yrs. You heard nothing from these folks when Bush and Chaney were running this country into the ground, two wars, mortgage melt down, banking system collapse, health care run a muck, a major U.S. city downing for 5 days, while Bush and his criminals set by and did nothing, U.S. hated all over the world, Department of Justice run a muck, Gas prices at an all time high, 5.3 million people have lost their jobs b/c of the Republicans policies and so on and so on. But let them tell it, Obama is going to ruin the country, PLEASE. The real reason why they hate Obama is b/c he's a person of color running the country, PPPPERIOD.

Please you go and read because you are the most ignorant person on the face of the earth.

I just read excerpts of this famous "speech" on your website, CNN, and my stomach did a flip-flop when he quoted the Quran and Talmud in the same breath as he did the HOLY BIBLE! Again, he played into the hands of the crowd he was speaking to. I, for one, am sick to death of him going around the world trying to be all things to all people and claiming that he is doing it in the best interest of the people of America. He acts like he speaks for all of us. Well, this is one American he doesn't speak for–I don't go around apologizing for being American or Christian. He needs to quit speaking for me!

(CNN, I will bet you don't post this one–you don't like my comments most of the time.)

Iran is not transparent nor is other muslim countries and talk is hot air. Muslims have proved time and time again don't trust. Muslims show progress in not treating women fair??? Obama and his progress is to cave in to the muslims and to dictators. His show of invites to the white house of people of lite skin hue shows what he stands for. Then give to those who don't want to learn and pass tests, big paying jobs because of the hue of their skin. The Obamas have taken race praoblems back to many years. Mr k\King might be rolling over in his grave. The world is laughing at this.

Really???
I read plenty and I don't see how this is true. Muslims ARE followers of Islam, it IS a religion, not a race. Maybe you meant Arab, not Muslim. Otherwise, am I a Christian just because one of my parents is, even if I don't believe in God? What if tyour parents are different religions, what then??

Jimmy the Greek   June 4th, 2009 1:55 pm ET

One man writes,

"We want to feel that America is friend to us [and] not against us. We want to be treated fairly by you."

SERIOUSLY – this is the problem.

What does "treating muslims fairly" mean?

WE give BILLIONS in foreign aid every year to muslim nations – is that not fair?
WE removed one of the most oppressive and brutal dictators (Saddam) – is that not fair?
WE have an open society where muslims live in peace – is that not fair?
WE defend muslim people in many battes/War (Balkins, etc) – is that not fair?

The REALITY is – "Fair" to many muslims means for America to:
1) stop supporting Israel
2) stop fighting back when we are attacked
3) condemn any organization or country who might cartoon Mohammed
4) adopt Sharia law

Sorry – it ain't gonna happen! When the muslim nations own up to the concept of national responsibility and living in peace regardless of religious differences.... THEN we can move forward.

@AmFem
I admit that, at one time, I had respect for the Republican party (though I never voted for them). But, they have been taken over by "wing-nut" religous zealots. Your party is fumbling themselves out of existance. Good riddance. Hopefully another party will become a viable contender for leading our nation. Until then, I'm a proud liberal Democrat, with a brilliant leader.

Sounds like Islam, follow your brilliant leader then, and embrace the Republicans. They aren't a party of hate, only the extreme ones hate. You should apologize for the wrongs that the Democrats have done to the Republican party instead of lump them all together as one.

Does the logic sound the same now?

If you reject it out of hand, re-evaluate Obama's speech.

Our country’s foreign policy was ran by AIPAC for too long (GOP has no opinion on foreign relations unless it is approved by AIPAC)…let’s see if Obama can change that…at least he is trying. Moderate Jews know this is in the best interest of the Jewish people as well. Obama please stay firm on the right-wing haters in US, Israel and Muslim world equally. Extremists from all sides hate Obama…just watch who is criticizing Obama’s speech: right-wingers in US, Al-Quaida and right-wingers in Israel. Obama must be doing something good.

Dave in Arlington   June 4th, 2009 1:51 pm ET

This is pretty ridiculous. People on this board yell another group is full of hate while in the same sentence they spit hatefully rhetoric right back!

There are people who love Obama for the sake of loving him and there are people who hate Obama because of small viewing windiow. We talk about muslim radicals when the entire crusades were 1/2 based on Christian beliefs and many extremist groups in America base there belifs in Christianity but instead of realeasing the hate on other they do on other americans (i.e.KKK).

Because a small faction of people are radicals we should pull back our hand from the whole? We're smarter than that America. We don't have to act like the cool group in high school. I think we can be a grown up country now.

Hayden   June 4th, 2009 1:51 pm ET

Whenever someone expresses a different view than Obama they are called hatemongers or closed minded conservatives. I am so tired of the white against black, rich against poor, liberals against conservatives, Christains against Muslims argument. I am African American by the way and I agree this country needs change but not the type of change being offered now.

This country is bankrupted and industries are failing left and right and we are concerned how the world views us. The world hates us, they always have. They don't hate us because of our actions or words, they hate us because of our core beliefs in freedom, justice and the American way of life. Nothing we can do will change that view, unless we stop being Americans.

bin Laden is a nervous wreck. He is terrified that the President will win over the hearts of the people he has terrorized. If he wouldn't have issued the statements now, he would have at least looked like he was in a position of power, but he has shown himself to be scared silly.

America is one of the largest Muslim Nations? What? Is he still smoking crack? I thought he gave that up in his youth. America is not a theocracy, our Constitution forbids state recognition of any religion, and also forbids any institutional preference of one religion over another. Our Muslim population per capita does not even touch most of the European, Eastern Eurpoean, or Russian nations. Who cares if we have a bunch of Muslims living in the U.S. We are allowed to practice any religion we want, unlike Muslim nations in the Middle East. And what is with the mustache Barry? We all know you are not Muslim, you made that perfectly clear in the campaign, you can shave, its all right. The world knows you are Christian.

So, he isnt a legitamate professional, doesnt pay his taxes and isnt a Christian.
Gee...any other day, the GOP would call him a liberal and heap ridicule on him and cast him out of the party. Not to mention the 'Independants' he was to represent went with Obama 65% to 35%

So TCM, would you like to retract your lame argumant?

Miguel   June 4th, 2009 1:41 pm ET

It's nice to have a President who speaks eloquently and with candor. I think his speech was well-balanced. He denounced Islamic fundementalism, but applauded Islamic contributions to the world. He spoke of forging coalitions, yet standing up for American values. He held fast with support of Israel, but didn't let them off the hook for their own failures to keep the peace. I don't believe the President was apologetic at all, contrary to what Mitt Romney believes. There are always going to be people who hate America, despite who is President. However, President Obama's speech will likely help begin to mend fences with Muslim nations and cultures. Bravo, Mr. President!

There was a time before i was born where an atomic bomb was dropped from a U.S. plane on thousands of innocent people to end WW2. Where Japanese were hauled off into camps on the west coast. The Nation reacted like maybe most would, AGAINST ITS PRINCIPLES. But I can walk the streets of Japan and make great freinds and we can cheer thier great intellects and athletes within our borders as well. To be able to look forward and look inward is very difficult but not impossible. This is why education is so important. Those that have posted here who still fear or speak ignorantly would keep us in the past because they fear that all the rhetoric they spewed is now worthless. But it is only the strong of mind and heart that can admit mistakes and move ahead with new conviction.

TCM   June 4th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

CANDY – think conservatism, not republican...not entirely the same thing. 911 happened on Bush's watch...however, being in the military for 20+ yrs , I know for a FACT that Clinton had the opportunity multiple times to squash Bin Laden and cronies...however, he was too busy with Monica. The speech was totally written by some cronie. Like I said, take away the teleprompter....and there's nothing but an empty suit...heck, they could use a clothes hanger to hold the suit.

Liberals are historically dellusional by nature, refusing to dig in and retrieve facts; perhaps a fear of the truth. However, by the end of this year, we're looking at double digit unemployment and worse than that, Obama's inflating the size of government. Government, in case you don't know, produces NOTHING...and therefore are a liability on the taxpayer to pay their salaries....so, we're losing jobs, but creating jobs that will cost MORE to fund...see the cycle, Candy? Obama's all about Obama...not about you.

julie   June 4th, 2009 1:31 pm ET

It was a brilliant speech. There was a lot of supportive facts, personal heart, and a real push to take a complicated issue and find a thread we can all connect to. I think he achieved it. He did with me. As an American with a successful Arab family tree that has been in America over 85 years I thank him for putting his own personal heart into this divisive issue. I hope he continues to reach out.

slp   June 4th, 2009 1:31 pm ET

Do any of you liberals ever get past the hero worship of President Obama to really listen to what he is saying. He is ashamed of this country. We have nothing to apologize to muslims for. This country has done more to help muslim nations than any other country on earth. No one has waged a war on muslims. It is radical Islam that we are fighting against. And yes, Leslie is correct. Sometimes war is necessary to obtain peace. When the olive branch has been extended and the other side has trampled all over it, then there is no other choice. Your president is turning his back on Israel. Let me clue you into something. God will continue to bless our nation as long as we support Israel. Once we withdraw our support, it is lights out. The Israelis are God's chosen people. We have no right to tell them that they can't defend themselves against Iran. Iran wants to wipe them off the map. This president is a disaster. He is digging us into a hole financially and is on his way to getting us all killed.
I bet you five dollars that CNN won't post this. If they do, however, at least Leslie will have some company. Oh, and by the way, Hannity rocks! I watch him every night. But he doesn't shape my views. These were my views long before I knew Hannity existed. We just share the same ones.

In spite of what everyone is saying that how rhetorical Obama is in this speech in Cairo what everyone has quickly forgotten in particularly this week as we have recognized an iconic President Reagan is that he too was rhetorical when he spoke in Berlin and said to then President Gorbachev , “Tear down this wall.” Everyone just knew those words were the worst thing that could be said but in ’89 the walls fell. So tell me are words hot air like flatulence or are they like seeds.

President Obama is doing his best in the worst of times. He did not choose these events to be the era that he would prefer to be a president during rather these are the times he finds himself in and he is doing his best. I applaud him for his efforts. In the last 60 years we have had several previous leaders who have been great orators, JFK and Johnson. The latter less than the former, who spoke of lofty ideas and contributed to making them happened. I believe the present administration is no less.

While we extol the virtues of diplomacy, let us not forget that not all wars are fought over misunderstandings or minor differences in philosophies of life. Some people just want what you have and aren't shy about simply taking it by force.

Thank you Mr. President. If we could only educate our own population about the world, we'd be so much stronger in national security and national economics.

If I've learned anything from these blogs it is that a large fraction of the American population is extremely ignorant. They are good people, intelligent people, with good instincts, but so undereducated that they can't put a logical argument together to defend their own thoughts. We must have better education for our children than we've had for ourselves.

For those GOP Obama haters, get over it! The President wrote this speech and delivered it with sincerity and brilliance! The President said that speeches cannot change decades of mistrust and hostility, only action can. A speech like this in Cairo is a small step in the right direction. This speech elevated the stature of the United States of America in the eyes and minds of not only the Muslim world but of the whole world. The President received 33 ovations during this speech to an educated Muslim audience in Cairo. It was watched by citizens of every Muslim country around the world and generally very well received! No US President has ever been as well received around the world including the Arab world as Barack Obama...and this is a good, positive thing for the US! Salaam a likem!

There's truh to what you've said. Philippines is a country in the pacific duking it out with Muslims in the southern part of their country for years. They've been offering peace to the Muslims; the Muslims demand ceasefire, as soon as the Philippine government agreed to the ceasefire, Muslims start their attack against christians (beheading priests, adults and children). The Muslim culture regardless of their geographical location are warring people, if they don't have a fight with foreigners they'd be fighting on their own.

Wow. I suspect all the individuals calling Islam an Evil or Bad religion have never actually read the Koran. I’m a Christian. However, I have had a few courses in religious studies. Do you realize that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are all very similar in that they are all Abrahamic religions rooted in the Old Testament? Islam actually views Jesus as a prophet and regards Jews and Christians as “people of the book.” Read a little people.

why do people have to be so ignorant here? I read the speech in its' entirety... it was smart, well thought out and delivered with confidence as only BO can do! nowhere in here did i see an apology or begging for forgiveness as some right wing talking heads have argued. what i saw was a leader looking to pour the foundations of mutually beneficial relationships for years to come with nations that have strained relationships with us at the present time... he tied our cultures together in a way i have never seen before. although most of what he said was common sense to me, it is rarely spoken aloud. my heart is filled with hope for the first time in my life! i hope we can someday look back on this and say "this is when human beings came together as ONE PEOPLE". Obama calls for peace between the U.S. and the Muslim world? Excuse me, but being a Muslim signifies what religion you practice. It has nothing to do with politics. That is why the Middle East has been in chaos for thousands of years. They can't separate government from religion like our forefathers did. Our country was started to escape the tyranny of the Church of England and its domination over people. Remember the crusades, the American Revolution, the Constitution?
The Middle East, no matter what speeches are given will never be at peace until they can separate their beliefs from politics.

This guy is a glimmer man, all smoke ,mirrors and BS.These people have been killing each other in the name of religion for thousands of years, now they kill us in the name of jihad, what makes you think anything he says will make one speck of difference. Also, listening to some of the women posting here, swooning over him with praise is sickening.

Great speech and an excellent vision statement, now to follow-up with policies and actions that support that vision statement. Committment to dialogue, tolerance, diversity and a system of democratic decision making founded in the rule of law is critical to a life of human dignity and opportunity

I would welcome Jimmy Carter back in office and he holds the title worse president ever. but at least I felt like he loved america I'm not sure about Obama.

What was wrong with the speech? he had one of his better if not best speech to date it had substance, and truth, something we as Americans need to hear. I believe America is the greatest country on earth but other countries fail to see us in that light anymore because of our actions over the past 10 years. Yes I said 10 years both democrats and republicans, and independents. We need to wake up and be the country we believe we are and not a hollow shell of what we once were

Some of these old geezers are too stuck in their '50s mentality, or too greedy to move forward with you.

I admit that, at one time, I had respect for the Republican party (though I never voted for them). But, they have been taken over by "wing-nut" religous zealots. Your party is fumbling themselves out of existance. Good riddance. Hopefully another party will become a viable contender for leading our nation. I believe that Obama has been a blessing to America. It is amazing to see the president go out and try unconventional means in settling conflict. Flexing our muscles with weapons and Dick Cheney's "protection of america" have failed for the past eight years and it's time for that to change. Its great for a compassionate administration to try and bridge the differences between ourselves and our enemies. I wonder how long it will take for Limbaugh and Cheney to respond in saying how much "weaker" we are as a result of this noble trip to the Muslim world.

It was interesting to hear CNN speakers, two hour, ago, saying that the relationship of the US with the Arab world was oil-driven.
That is not accurate.
Since the early twentieth century technological and other assistance to the Arab world had been moving to the Middle East directions. I wiah I could post a video to show how much the West has done to transform prople who lived without any modern comfort to what they are today, at the realm of comfort, let's not mention medical and health assistance. The place was nothing.
Even when you talk oil, which has enriched those countries, you may wish to refer to the fact that the West with all its technology allowed this area to flourish and to make it what it is right now.
I am surprised CNN no more checks facts from fiction.

cj   June 4th, 2009 12:53 pm ET

Frank, I don,t know how old you are but the Muslim world has hated the west since the begining of our meager existance. Did you know that there were sects of Muslims that helped the Axis powers of WWII to take North Africa? Why do you suppose that that was? Stop trying to blame Bush for everything, it began way before he came along.

Do you know history? This country is because we took the land from others. Louisiana Purchase and Alaska excepted. Hawaii was a soverign island nation. American business and Christian leaders overthrew their government . There was profit to be made and oh yeah, they were savages. Don't get me started on "ethnic cleansing". Just ask the native Americans. History is written by the victors.

Candy West Virginia   June 4th, 2009 12:50 pm ET

TCM – 911 happened on the conservatives (republicans) watch. How did they keep us safe.? Yes, the speech was brilliant, but i understand how after listening to hannity, lush limpaugh, cheyney day in and day out you wouldn't know true brilliance if it sat on you. And btw thanks for proving my point about those who hate and how UNenlightened they are, after reading your posts everyone will see that for themselves. Melissa   June 4th, 2009 12:48 pm ET

I'm shocked the Republicans haven't been having a fit. Usually all Obama has to do is open his mouth and the Republicans start screaming before a sound even comes out. Especially Rove, Limbaugh, and Gingrich.

I thought it was a very very good speech. It was very positive and hopeful. Exactly what we all need right now.

Obama is very very good about making people feel positive.

sandy   June 4th, 2009 12:46 pm ET

CORRECTION:

Hussein Obama is ALL talk ZERO on substance. IF speech brings peace, Mahatman Gandhi would would be the first man in the world to claim it, even Mahatma Gandhi was not able to bring peace to his beloved India when it was divided into two countries (other half is now Pakistan).

Those who seek peace must be prepared to go to war. No peace was achieved in the history of mankind without war.

Hussein Obama is talk! talk! talk! He can't even bring peace in the southside of Chicago when he was representing them as Senator.

Don't kid a kidder Hussein, you're a faded glory.

It is rather pathetic, last year when you call Hussein Obama a MUSLIM, everyone will call you racist, now it is acceptable. How stupid can these 60 million people who voted for the poser?

The only way the Muslim world will believe they're being treated "fairly" by the west is if they can gain total domination over the west. They must be clasping their hands and chortling with glee at the dangerously naive new US leader.

sandy   June 4th, 2009 12:43 pm ET

I think the speech left out on the fact that Muslims agressed the Western world in New York twice (1980s and 1991), Spain and London. Why do we have to amend things when they are also agressors and should reach out for us.

Val New York city   June 4th, 2009 12:43 pm ET

TCM   June 4th, 2009 12:43 pm ET

CANDY from WEST VIRGINIA - Brilliant? Are you that easily duped by a 10 cent soap box sermon? What do you think would've happened if the teleprompter was turned off? Do you think he could've, for a moment, spoke with any intelligence? Are you really this fooled?

Conservatives have kept this country safe. As for hatred, (like the type you're spewing) remember Joe the Plumber? And how the hateful obama administration immediately set out to discredit an average citizen? Remember all the tabloid ferver about Palin? The hatred's on your side, you inbred...oops, was I being hateful?

PS – Candy, by the way, the MAJORITY of the country is center-right, not wingnut left. Obama won by corruption, and it's buried deep, but still salvageable.

Frank from Peterborough   June 4th, 2009 12:41 pm ET

Don't get too excited yet as we have to remember this is the first American, in 8 years, to speak live to people abroad with an intellectual ability above what one expects to find in a 10 year old.

In any event it is a start on improving America's world wide image so hopefully better days are on the horizon.

CC   June 4th, 2009 12:40 pm ET

This is all great stuff but, Islam needs to take care of their religion. THIS IS A MUSLIM PROBLEM, MUSLIMS NEED TO FIX. Also we all need to understand that a fundamental fact of Islam is that if you cannot convert to the Muslim faith then you must be terminated. This is the problem with this whole religion, you have extremists out there who wholly believe this and are beheading Christians because of their faith. I am fine with this right now President Obama but, I really don't give a rat's butt what Islam thinks of me or my country. I hope this out reached hand works because if it does not we will even increase the distance already between our countries. Also I want to point out its not just America who has the bad taste in their mouths about Muslims, look around people its the whole world!!!!!

katiec   June 4th, 2009 12:39 pm ET

From what I have heard and read President Obama's speech was very well accepted by the majority of people. They realized he was sincere in what he was saying.
So far the republicans have been quiet. That is unusual as they are usually tearing everything apart even before it happens. Maybe, just maybe they realize his trip to the Middle East is a good thing.
Naw, even if this was true they would never admit it.

From the remarks I've heard on different news channels, it sounds to me like Israel is going to pout - maybe their attitude needs to change.

Everyone wants to know "what's next"? I think it's up to US – the people – to make things happen. Our president is one man with good ideas, but WE have to be willing to do something instead of sitting back demanding more more more more.

America .gov......is spewing all this "obama approval..." Yet, it's just another propaganda website, posted up by obama cronies with the sole intent to make Obama look good. It's merely another vehicle used by the lib democratic party of D'oh to keep the sheeple happy and content as Obama drives the bus off the cliff.

TRUE PRACTICING muslims, are, by definition of the Koran, radical in nature relative th Christians. They despise are very existence. non-practicing, or dilluted muslims who seldom practice their faith are the ones claiming it's a religion of peace...

Again, this website making these claims are about as trustworthy as the CNN research polls where they simply poll 1010 liberals , out of a country of millions of conservatives, with obama questions and post the splendid, but biased results on the web. Misinformation such as this should be a crime. It totally misleads the shallowminded sheeples, and that's the core of his support base.
