The White House said Thursday the first lady had selected a new chief of staff.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - First lady Michelle Obama has brought in an old Chicago friend, Susan Sher, to replace chief of staff Jackie Norris.

The White House announced the switch late Thursday.

Norris was part of the team that led the Obama campaign to victory in the Iowa caucuses. She will now serve as a senior adviser to the Corporation for National and Community Service.

"I am grateful to President and Mrs. Obama for the opportunities and friendship they have given me over the last few years and I am looking forward to becoming an integral part of this Administration's efforts to advance the cause of national and community service," Norris said in a statement released by the White House.

In a statement, Mrs. Obama described Sher, who has been advising her on issues like health care, "as a trusted advisor, longtime mentor and friend dating back to my work at the City of Chicago and later the University of Chicago."

She also thanked Norris for building "a strong organization in the East Wing."

The first lady is slated to join President Barack Obama in Europe for the final leg of his latest overseas trip.

I have never seen so many hateful people criticise a presidendt and
his wife before. Little things that not even important, you criticise. i am
a democrat. When president Bush was in office i didn't like his policies, but i respect him and the first lady. I thouth she was a
wounderful lady. Why is it so hard for you to say Michell is a good, and

THE UNITED STATES NO LONGER BELONG TO THE WHITE RIGHT-WINGERS. DID YOU ALL NOT GET THE MEMO?

The FLOTUS is planning to join the POTUS in Europe for the last leg of his trip. The stupid haters think she should pay for the trip and other related expenses. Where were these haters when President Bush was making bi-monthly trips to Crawford, Texas on US1?

To Gop: You obviously are missing the point, as you continue to judge this ladies appearance as well as repeatedly use the phrase 'liberal left'.
To CNN: Please, if this is a human moderated post, I'm certain your resources are such that you can better vet the comments people are able to leave here.. How could 'Gop' and the rest of the commenters say things not at all relevant to this story? I read CNN everyday... its my homepage on my computer... but some of the comments I've read here today shows the very fabric of America...

Hiring buddies is not cool! Also, on another level, people better be asking why is Obama freezing cola for social security for the next two years? He's all for bailing out the companies that showed poor management and picking on the old and disabled on fixed incomes.

Bzzt, not a news flash   June 5th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

How is this news? The country elected HIM, not her....remember?

Almost as bad as Hillary and Bill and health care reform...at least Hillary was actually influencing national policy. Michelle can replace her "chief of staff" (meaning, the guy who makes sure the invitations to parties get mailed).

This is not news. Good grief, find something worthy of your web space, wouldcha?

Steve   June 5th, 2009 1:51 pm ET

Who pays for Michelle's staff? I am guessing the tax payers. Was Michelle voted into office? No, her husband was...why is SHE deciding CEO positions?? Nice how her bud gets a fat government job that probably pays 6 figures.

See folks, the party name changes...but thats it...still have the typical fat cats in washington scratching each others backs giving away high paying jobs. I wonder if Obama will put in life long friends as directors of GM?

We need to end 2 term presidents so they dont cater to rich folks for the next election.

Repulicans have such trouble coming up with valid, worthwhile complaints about teh Obamas. The Obamas are intelliegent, articulate and competent. Comparing Michelle with sarah Palin is ridiculous, Sarah Palin has no where near the level of education. On top of Sarah Palin's husband doesn't even have a college degree, which tells you how they value education in that family.

Republicans need to sit down and shut up as they look stupid everytime they open their mouth. Especially, Dick Cheney, Newt, and Rush.....PLEASE NOTE: NON OF WHICH ARE ELECTED OFFICIALS!!

Ella   June 5th, 2009 1:45 pm ET

For those who wonder why this is news, do you also wonder why we care about past photos of Marilyn Monroe, the fashion of Jackie Onassis, the pregnancies of Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Ritchie, Angelina Jolie or etc, the red carpet dresses of celebrities or the last china that was bought by Laura Bush in Janurary? If you consider the prior events news, then you should also consider this news. If you do not, then don't read it. That is the great thing about America. We have the freedom of speech( which allows an article like this to be written or not) and also the freedom of whether or not we want to read it.

djcollin47   June 5th, 2009 1:39 pm ET

This didn't start with Ms. Obama, but why does the First Lady have a staff, let alone, a chief of staff? This isn't a dem or repub question. This is not an elected or appointed official, they have no official responsibility or capacity.

Maybe CNN could do a follow-up on the story to find out just how much the First Lady's staff has cost throughout the last few administrations.

Janna, DC   June 5th, 2009 1:38 pm ET

Don't hate, celebrate.

I think it's great that the First Lady is joining her husband with the kids and Mrs. Robinson. Just like Bush, Laura and daughter Barbara went to the China Olympics. No one complained then, so why are you complaining now.? The president is working, and the kids are out of school, so Michelle can join him. So what?

I want my tax dollars to support the president and his family– and that's that. Unfortunately, my tax dollars are part of your tax dollars. Just like your tax dollars paid for GW Bush, along with my tax dollars.

Every Administration names their own people for the jobs at hand... this is NO mystery! Only the GOP could try to make a travesty of this time honored procedure. If they do it, it's fine. If Obama and the Dems do it, it is a travesty to the American People! Pffft... I am quite sure that most of the population expects this to happen. Think of something important to say NO about, GOP... or Republican Big Business Party! Your illogical arguments no longer hold water with most of us! You are the Past, and we want the Future to serve all of us... NOT just the extremely wealthy few!

Johny   June 5th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

I only have two points to make:

To all the people complaining to CNN moderators about the negative comments towards Mrs. Obama, funny how I never hear this complaint when an article about Mrs. Palin is posted. I just read one a moment ago and someone commented about taking her in the woods and murdering her. You people are being hypocrites.

To the ones that continue to throw out the "racism" accusations, I have yet to read one post that someone hates the Obamas because of their skin color. It is possible to not agree with their policies and not be racist too.

Rene   June 5th, 2009 1:33 pm ET

I can't believe these right wing nuts still believe "Acorn" is an issue or was even an issue...you republicans are complete morons! your lies have caught up to you and that's what it is, you don't like it! It's the same thing when that whole Bush/Gore nightmare occurred, you were all there to bully ANYONE who questioned your election process and stole the election! go away! you're only 21% of the population (and thank god for that!)...can't wait til you're in the single digits!

Wanda   June 5th, 2009 1:31 pm ET

I could care less about who she hires or fires in the White House. I'm concerned about the other things that go there.
Are my children going to be able to afford a family and a home of their own, are they going to be killed by some terrorist because of the lack of concern about the security in our nation. When will decisions be made there that will protect us instead of our "leader" running around kissing up to our enemies.
These are things that concern me. Not who got hired or fired that make decisions that don't effect me or my family. HELLO..is there anyone there that cares??????

barry in las vegas   June 5th, 2009 1:15 pm ET

I don't care for the Obama's politics, but they have the right to have the people they are most confortable with working for them.

I don't think that the former Chief of Staff had any real hopes of being retained in this position.

Michelle is entitled to this change and any others she wants to make in her staff.

Darth Vadik, CA   June 5th, 2009 1:15 pm ET

Joe Publicini,

I really don't care whether you feel better or not, but the country does, and so do I. I do not want an idiot in the whitehouse, and after 8 years of Bush I feel a heck of a LOT better with Obama.

As far as getting a perfect candidate, IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

Whould you people really want McCain and the insane lady from Alaska instead of Obama?

I despise Republicans for their idiotic political beliefs, but I also despise those Democrats who "will never be happy" with whomever is in office. Obama's not perfec, but he is better than what we've had in the whitehouse since Carter (yes Carter, probably the most descent man whitehouse has ever had, yes, even Abe)

Obamaisinthewhitehouseohyes   June 5th, 2009 1:14 pm ET

Hmmm...possible the two events might be related. DUH!! Word to the wise, CNN, news about Michelle and Bo belongs on ET, not the Political Ticker. Oh well, keep it up. But unless it is the later, and so far there is nothing to suggest that there is anything nefarious going on...we should simply not care. Job changes happen all the time in the real world. It is simply the infatuation CNN et al have with fellow liberals, socialists and others with a desire to destroy a once-great country!

why do the conservative right feel the profound need to slam any and everything that doesn't coincide with their narrow viewpoint? and to do so with such vehemence and vitriol.

in my everyday experience, that kind of action/reaction is soley because they don't have any kind of realistic arguement for their stance.

and here ... here they are picking on someone's wife, kids, and even the dog, for crying out loud.

how can anyone take them seriously.

SHIRLEY SDL   June 5th, 2009 12:56 pm ET

Out of curiosity, and in an attempt to understand some of the negativity expressed here, I looked up Jackie Norris. I learned that her new job is a real promotion to the leader of CORPORATION FOR NATIONAL AND COMMUNITY SERVICE (CNCS), whose programs include Americorps, Learn and Serve America, Senior Corps, etc, and will in 2010 have a $1.1 billion annual budget. This means jobs people, even if you don't need one, and encouraging others to serve this country, which I think is a good thing. So I say congratulations to Ms. Norris and Ms. Sher, afterall, why shouldn't the First Lady hire someone she already knows, and the President use someone who is already proven? Let's all try very hard to be more grown up, because since 1/20/09, reasonable and rational decisions are the new order of the day.

Nancy   June 5th, 2009 12:56 pm ET

I'm an independent, and have voted for both Republican and Democrat in the past. Obama didn't get my vote.

Even though I don't agree with Obama and many of his policies and decisions, he's the sitting president and he gets to do what he wants to to. It's too early to cast the verdict on his performance. Until the next election comes, give the man a chance.

With that said, what's so big deal about the Michelle changing her Chief of Staff?? People got hired or fired or repositioned all the times. Everyone needs to chill out.

Since when do we have royalty in this county. We fought a war to get out from under the control of a monarchy. You're comment that Laura Bush is a mere "commoner" is ridiculous. If you want a monarchy I suggest you move to England.

LacrosseMom   June 5th, 2009 12:55 pm ET

@ FRED......... First, thank you for your service! And thank you for your thoughtful comment! I agree with you. In my case, I voted for Bush in 2000, and was deeply disappointed in his policies. I may have disagreed with Bush every step of the way, but as you said, he was MY president. Not once did I suggest a "revolution" or to secede from the Union as many on the "right" have.

God bless you, Fred!

Gop   June 5th, 2009 12:54 pm ET

The problem with you liberal Democrats is you like to dish it out but cannot take the same.

I don’t care how much you might be in love with Obama and his wife that does not give you a pass on the things you all said about Bush and his wife for 8 years.

I like to point out when Bush had the economy running well all we got from you liberal left was how bad it was and how no matter how many people had jobs it was just not good enough.

Now with your great love Obama you spin it as hey it’s bad but it could be worst. Are only 300,000 people lost their job last month it could have been half a million “wow Obama is doing a great job”

I could care less whom Michelle the horse teeth girl hires. It does speak of cronyism and I do recall that is what was said of Bush every time he hired someone. Again it’s fine if you liberals do it but not any one else.

Gop   June 5th, 2009 12:53 pm ET

So you say the staff at the White House serves at the pleasure and privilege of the President? Well yes that is true just like the fact we had judges that served in this same manner.

But I should point out the liberal democrats went after Bush when he fired some of them did they not?

And to this day they still bring this up though Bush did nothing wrong. When Clinton became president he fired every judge and no one said a word about it.

Again liberal left can dish it out but cannot take it back.

I think neither Carter nor Reagan are to blame for those. I believe they were a result of a de-industrialization process that began in the late 60's. Some areas of the country adapted to an information economy, some did not. If you grew up in Buffalo, NY around this time, you know exactly what I'm talking about. The current recession is nothing compared to the misery in that particular time and place. Sorry to be a downer, but I still think about it to this day. Have a nice day!

I don't understand what the big deal is, All First Ladies have a Chief of Staff. The Obama administrtion did not invent this practice. The way that GW and his administration left this country the Republicans should be the last to criticize anyone else or the new administration. If they had better ideas, we wouldn't be in this situation now. Get the message: You lost the election, the American spoke!

I'm a retired Marine and I know how to fight, but there's a lot of difference in the ammo when you compare the media to an M14. The media doesn't shoot straight. A rifle does. I cannot believe some of the comments people have made on here. CNN provides this as an outlet to share opinions and thoughts on a particular story... personal attacks on this womans appearance, weight and the how she dresses have nothing to do with her Chief of Staff pick. Additionally, we must be reminded that staff at the White House serve at the pleasure and privilege of the President and the First Lady. I believe and Mrs. Obama has shown herself to be a competent and accomplished individual; Given the agendas she has chosen to champion, her Chief of Staff will have the privilege of helping her choose those that are most qualified whether through experience or expertise. Of course everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I also believe we can be objective and agree to disagree.

The President made a speech that the wjole world is talking about; Elie Wiesel made one as great at Buchenwald that hopefully Israelis were listening to, and CNN is worried about some changes in Michelle Obama's staff leaving out key information and posters worried about what color her new secretary is. Absolutely pathetic in a democracy that depends on access to information!!

America will fail not because of policies but due to hate, ignorance and rigid ideology.

So many liberals promised to move to Canada if John Kerry lost the election and didn't do it. I doubt any of you could manage to promise to stay out of a conservative country if we did create one. First, Wal-Mart would move there as well as many of the companies with labor unions and, instantly, liberal country would lose millions of jobs. Then the people in your country would have no work and want so badly to move to the consevative country that they would stop demanding $17 and hour to sack groceries (the average wage in CA before Wal-Mart) and move there just to have a job because, without those companies and jobs, the liberal country would not collect enough taxes to support all the unemployed; unless you continue to borrow from China.

They tried to suggest this in Texas but most liberals freaked out because, deep down in their Obama and Michelle worshipping minds, they know liberalism FAILS.

Anita McBride – Laura Bush's Chief of Staff
Andi Ball – Laura Bush's First Chief of Staff who left just after the 2004 election to move back home to Texas, she had been Laura's Executive Assistant while they lived in Texas.

Was that a "shakeup" Was that cronyism? Or is that because they are Democrats? Women? From Chicago or Black?

Michelle Obama is not the first "First Lady" to have a Chief of Staff, - First Lady's have Chief's of Staff who manage their activites, help with the social activities and other stuff we require a first lady to do.

Why is it that people read cronyism? Every single resident of the White House brings people they have worked with and trust into their world, wouldn't you?

Every First Lady travels with her husband and serves as a representative of the United States.

I am so shocked that people are so uniformed and more importantly, believe the garbage and nonsense that is spewed forth in spam emails and by shock jockies.

Take responsiblity to learn and educate yourselves in the truth. If you did you would see that politicians from all parties do not have as much hatred and distrust of each other as you do.

It's funny reading these posts every day. Libs are accusing repubs of being incredibly angry, yet libs have been angry since election day 2000. Now that they got their way, they aren't angry, but repubs are.

Both parties are hypocrits, both have too much hate, and both need to realize that their leaders don't care about them as much as the power we bestow on them through elections. Obama, Clinton, Bush, Reagan, they all care the same about the people, which is enough to get themselves re-elected. And if you truly don't believe that, then you should go work in Washington for a summer. It is the easiest lesson to learn.

First things first, if you are offered a better job, would you take it, as for the Unemployment, President Obama made it clear, it could get worse before it gets better and the gas, well it does takes fuel to fly a plane.

If you know anyone who lived through the Great Depression, please talk to them, we had never learned as a Country. It took about ten years until people went back to work, then WW2 happened.

People this all happened because of deregulation of the Banking system, bad loans and the high Credit Card interest. How many people got a pre-approved Credit Card application and the interest was what 23%

As for First lady Michelle Obama, she is beautiful and well liked around the world. Her clothing is what she likes, you wear clothing you like, sheesh get a freaking life. If she wears an outfit from an unknown designer and she says the name, well he or she will be a very rich person.

You use these platforms for smear campaigns and sowing seeds of hatred and fear. It really shows through your words what your characters are about. The nastiness and hatemongering that goes on in these comment/chat rooms is horrendous. This is not "Freedom of speech." You have turned it into "Freedom to spew out hatred of anything unlike you." This is racism in its purest form. Spewing venom in cyberspace and incite the ignorant to action. We are entitled to our opinions of course but to use those opinions to spew venomous words towards others in the name of free speech is a copout. Instead of focusing on subjects or topics, this platform is being used to launch personal attacks. If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him. This is not what the Founding Fathers of the Declaration of Independence had in mind with the First Amendment

Even the job economy is looking better, believe me, I know. And its just eating you (Percy Weaslys) from the inside that Obama can do it, and 8 years of Republican rule did not do squat except treat this country like its own personal punching bag.

I know you feel it, but I'll give you advice (which you wont heed anyway, but I'm a Democrat, I actually try to help people when I can):

"Don't be a Percy Weasly"

Pat in IL   June 5th, 2009 12:24 pm ET

What's the beef? One took another job, and another was brought in to replace her. Big deal. As far as being from Chicago.....so what? Everybody is from some place, and since Michelle is from Chicago, there are more people there that she knows well. Remember all the cronies from Texas that GW brought in. Some were just friends and not qualified for the jobs. At least this woman is qualified.

deb   June 5th, 2009 12:24 pm ET

Wow! The hate, stupidity and just plain ignorance on these boards regarding the Obamas is appalling (and scary).

Dave   June 5th, 2009 12:23 pm ET

why does she have a staff? Does she pay their saleries out of her own pocket?

Ajaye   June 5th, 2009 12:22 pm ET

You know you critics are pathetic. You DON'T know why there was a change and yet you want to assume the worst.

Let me make this very clear. Barack Obama IS the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!! Michelle Obama IS the FIRST LADY!!!! with all the same rights and priviledges as their Predecessors!!

The big problem here is that "THE RACISTS" can't handle it. That is the real problem here and therefore you come up with DESTRUCTIVE REMARKS!!!!
GET OVER YOURSELVES!!!!! THEY ARE OUR LEADERS, WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT!!!!!!!!

ButterflyLady   June 5th, 2009 12:22 pm ET

I am not a Democrat or liberal (more moderate) and initially did not like Michelle Obama. But I do think she has handled herself very well since becoming First lady. I really do not care who she has to run her office, I am more concerned about her husband's policies, which I believe will soon ruin our economy causing hyper inflation and ridiculous tax increases. The rich will not be harmed (they have lots of money to bare the burden). The poor will be able to get some governmental help, but the middle class will be DOOMED to servitude to the government! I hope I am wrong but i have no faith in politicians anymore. I have heard this same song and dance before from the Carter administration, which was an utter failure. Guess when you don't learn from history you are bound to repeat it!

Grin and Bare It   June 5th, 2009 12:22 pm ET

Okay, Who is kidding Whom? There are alot of people in the US that must have their heads buried in the sand. If you can't see where this nation is headed, then I really feel sorry for you all. Actually, no I don't. When this nation falls apart, you will all be singing a different tune! For me and my family, we have lowered our expectations during an Obama administration. That way the fall will at least seem to hurt less. Good Luck America. We all need it.

Free from Rethuglican rule   June 5th, 2009 12:21 pm ET

Look out here is another Rethuglican that will be throwing his name in the hat shortly. Hopefully the good thought producing people of Ohio will show this idiot the door next election. No,no,no, wah, wah, wah!!! (Rethuglican opening comments at press conferences.)

All First Ladies have a Chief Of Staff. This person is responsible for keeping the schedule for and activities for the First Lady. So someone please tell me why now it is a problem for Michelle Obama to have a Chief Of Staff.

It's haters. Plain and simple,,,,,, haters. It's OK for all other First Ladies to have one but not the first Black First Lady. Never herd a word about this and other stuff like this until there was a color change at the top.

Especially to Steph and the other haters: One would thought that racism was almost dead, but you guys sure let it known it is alive and well, "cool aid people" and "more Chicago trash"-what a way to describe the President and First Lady-all because they are African Americans. I think you guys would love to have us back as slaves in the fields, but be advised THOSE DAYS ARE GONE AND WILL NEVER RETURN. Hate them as much as you can, they will remain President and First Lady for the next eight years–(yes!!! he will be re-elected)-so if you don't like it –just eat crow . You just cannot stop destiny. Long live the President and First Lady and I send blessings to Steph and the other haters.

I'm curious about the ways in which CNN moderates these blogs. I believe in freedom of speech, but when I hear some Americans calling their First Lady ugly, a monkeyface, and that maggots could feed off of her – it frankly scares me.

I am a Canadian who admires and loves America, but in light of some of the things I read on these blogs, I'm afraid you have tough days ahead of you.

Be united. Fake it if you have to!

Donnie in Minneapolis   June 5th, 2009 12:18 pm ET

To all you haters of the Obamas, I really feel sorry for you. You can't get pass the fact that they are our leaders now. Stop being stupid and malicious and start caring about our country and the work that needs to be done to get it back on track.

President Obama has his work cut out for him and I think he is doing a hell of a job so far. He is surrounding himself with people of intergity and intelligence to help him get the job done. As they say, "Can't we all get alone." We are more alike than we are different.

Remember the world is watching us and so far you are acting like kindergardens who can't have their way. I am glad that you complainers are not the leaders of this country. We would be in pitiful shape.

People!!!!!!!! Focus here, get behind Obama and make this country look splendor for all to see. He pushes for all of us to be more educated, who doesn't want that???? and lets not forget there is a missing plane and love ones, so leave Michelle alone and lets pray for the lost victims

I know you don't have nothing in life because you are complaining all of the time. These people that have all these complaints need to get a life. As some have stated they are just plain jealous and racist. The Obamas have earned their right to be where they are. At least they are more educated and professional than you are. You are just angry because he knows how to campaign the political game as well as you do. Bush had picked all of his daddy's old fart friends and look where they took us. But it is okay. I am sooooo sick and tired of people talking about our President and First Lady. I just wonder how many of you served your country and how many of you actually voted. No President can do worse that George W. Bush everytime he opened his mouth incert foot. Everyone wants to blame this President for everything that has happen to this country, but least yea forget that there was a president before him. Give me a break, I served this country for 20 yrs and he has not done any worse than any other president. Maybe some of you need to go and grab a history book and you will find that every First Lady had a Chief of Staff and I am so proud of Michelle O'bama at least she hasn't just been riding her husband's coat tail like some other First Ladies. Is it an organized tactic to blame the last eight years of financial, social, and political degradation on Obama-who's been in office only a little over 100 days-or do the wing nuts really believe that high unemployment and economic turmoil are his fault? Just think about how bad things would be if the "stay the course" Republicans were still in office. Unemployment would be 20% instead of 9. I'm glad they're a minority saying "no" instead of a majority saying "stay the course". And how did a staff change in the First Ladies' office lead to such vitriol from the right wing talking heads anyway? It's a staff change. Certainly not the first, won't be the last. Happens everywhere all the time. The level of anger and hate and indignation coming from the right is stunning. I worry that the shooting of George Tiller is only the beginning of a violent uprising of Republican extremism.

magella   June 5th, 2009 12:11 pm ET

I love how anyone that comes from Chicago to serve in the administration is a "crony" or corrupt. Chicago's a big city, people–not everyone has ties to the political machine or organized crime or whatever it is you retards are insinuating. Michelle Obama has spent her WHOLE LIFE living in Chicago–it stands to reason she would choose someone she knew from her past to serve as her chief of staff.

If you want to talk about cronyism, let's talk about how Dick Cheney ended up getting the nod for VP from Bush, along with everyone else from his "good old boys'" network.

Give it a rest already!

"Chicago cronyism" – really? That is what you haters call this? We can plainly see ANY move by the Obamas will be torn apart by the conservative dog pack, but this is almost funny. Bush surrounds himself with unqualified yes men, Cheney passes billion dollar favors to his company, the Bush administration breaks fair labor laws trying to politicize the judiciary, and you doofuses complain about the First Lady bringing on someone she is comfortable with to be her right hand assistant? Not only is your grasp of the facts as tenuous as it typically is for a conservative. your sense of perspective is also similarly whacked.

Mark in Miami   June 5th, 2009 12:08 pm ET

PJinDC   June 5th, 2009 12:06 pm ET

I'll say this about Michelle Obama: though I'm not a supporter of the President's politically I think his First Lady is an truly impressive woman. She defines what the modern mother/professional is... she is incredibly bright, sophisticated, educated, informed, aware, concerned, and appears genuine and sincere. She is able to do what few men could, which is to be a successful part of the working world while also being a dedicated mom who is present for her children. Those of us who have wives just like her can respect and admire her class and grace even if we don't agree with her huband's politicics.

And to the mental midget who said she's the ugliest First Lady: c'mon. Give me a break. The woman is elegant, classy, and seems imminently approachable. She always looks lovely and we should all be as proud and impressed at the quality of the First Lady as we were with Mrs. Bush. Beauty can be found in many forms and Michelle Obama is very much a beautiful lady.

Lynda/Minnesota   June 5th, 2009 12:06 pm ET

There is a reason why I and many others do not watch FOX News or listen to talk radio. Lately all that has come from the right on these blogs are FOX News and talk radio parrots.

For the past month you parrots have done nothing but criticize, including the FLOTUS, the First Daughters, and the dog. Just how many of you are really as shallow as your comments make you out to be is anyones guess. But, whether your constant barrage of nonsence makes you more of a Christian IS debatable.

So many of you have repeated lie after lie after lie. You do it knowingly and without conscience. How Christian is that, I wonder?

No need to comment. This is my last blog on CNN.

You know this is the kind of crap I don't like. I did not vote for her and why does she need a "Cheif of Anything". I just love the way Politics just basically assumes they have a right to do what they want. Why can't First Ladies be just that and not try to change policies for their own causes. I think this can back fire on a President and a fine example of this is Jimmy Carter the Peanut Farmer. Who when in office let Roslyn have a major input on the decision making process and look what happened, when his re-election occurred every one turned on him and he was gone. First ladies should just look nice, be sweet, support their husbands and shut up!!!!

To those of you who are complaining about the First Lady joining the President on his trip, stop complaining for the sake of complaining. Every First Lady has done this before her, including Laura Bush, Barbara Bush, Pat Nixon, Betty Ford and every other REPUBLICAN First Lady ever.

It is clear that Reblicans are criticizing the Obamas just for criticism sake. You do not have any valid arguments about them so you choose to be petty, vindictive and malicious.

Grown up !

It is George Bush's fault we are in this mess, not President Obama.

President Obama is trying to do his best to deal with the disasterS Bush left for not only President Obama, but for the entire country.

Republicans should stop behaving like spolied brats and start working with the President to resolve the issues that need resolving.

Being vindictive, divisive, alarmist, whiners, alarmists, racists and flat out liars will not get the Republicans anywhere, except on a path to self destruction.

Felicia Armstrong   June 5th, 2009 12:03 pm ET

And this is news>>>>> You Obama haters seem to hang on to every word the press reports on the Obamas. You Obama haters need to get a life. Jealousy will eat you alive while you wait for 4 years to pass. Remember, the Republicans are the reason for Obama being in Office. If Rush Limbough and the rest had pick a better candidate maybe Obama would have had some competition in winning. But, this is just proof.........America is tired of the Good ole' boy Republican way and Change is over due. I got news for all of you Obama haters, if the Republicans don't clean up their act and drastically change their image, Mr. President Obama will be serving another term. So I'll enjoy all of you haters agonize in misery for the next 8 years. Ha Ha

Lynn   June 5th, 2009 12:03 pm ET

What CNN fails to state is that Ms Norris just received her Masters Degree in the community service area and will be an enthusiatic qualified addition to Both the President's and the First Lady's policies in that area. Again a silly blog to create nonexistant controversy and hear pathetic rants from the haters. Last time I looked at a map, Chicago was still part of America.

As Ms is just 34 and the mother of small children , I would view this as a fantastic opportunity to follow her passion and have a schedule condusive to being a mother. Myself I would perfer her new job!!

Janice in Mississippi   June 5th, 2009 12:03 pm ET

Every First Lady and every Vice President's Lady (I hate the term "second" lady) have had staff.

Why is there a problem with the two leaders of this administration wives having a staff? Or, is the problem only with the First Lady having a staff?

Ms. Norris applied for and got the job where she will "lead"; she is capable of doing just that.

Mrs. Obama chose Ms. Sher, someone she and her family have know for years, to replace Ms. Norris. This goes on every day in government and private administrations.

Saying negative things about Mrs. Obama in order to make you feel better is not going to change the fact that Mrs. Obama is the First Lady.

All First Families fly in the 247 that becomes Air Force One when the President is on board. Two of them have always flown at the same time; as one always serves as a diversion. This is NOT NEW. What is the dam big deal because the Obamas use Air Force One? Come on; you can say why it really bothers you. Stop hiding behind hash words and say why you have a "problem" with this First Family. I and the rest of the world already know why.

I and many other Americans and others around the world love the Obamas; God loves the Obamas; prayers of protection and love shall sustain them; prayers will identify those who wish to cause them harm.

TJ in Tally   June 5th, 2009 12:03 pm ET

If by cronyism you mean that someone brings in people they trust to advise them, then yeah, that is what it is. Happens in every government agency at all levesl when there is an administration change. When you have a huge job you want people around you that you trust and respect. Can anyone honestly say they wouldn't do the same?

It is not unusual for changes in staff to take place. Why is this a big deal? And why assume that it was initiated by Michelle Obama? Maybe Norris was offered a position that she saw as a better place for her. I've done the same thing in the past – loved the people I worked with but hated the job so I found another one that suited my skills and fit my goals better. We don't have the info and, frankly, what difference does it make?

And for all you making comments about why the first lady is anouncing a new chief of staff – you do realize that this is HER chief of staff, not the White House chief of staff, right?

Polla   June 5th, 2009 12:02 pm ET

The President Obama is not the first President to take is wife on a date nor would he be the last. If anything he is still showing America how to be a husband and a family man. Because of security reason he will have to take a plane instead of a bragad of cars from DC to NY. No one complained when Bush vacationed at the Ranch, nor when he redecorated the ranch off tax payers money. Get a life you hateful repubs! Now because Michelle has appointed a person she knows well and know will serve well. Favors, i think not, or maybe you want to question Bush pick of Cheny when Cheny got an extra pay check off higher gas prices in this country! I will be glad when President Obama cleans up all this repub mess and then what will you have to whine about. TOO MANY JOBS? TOO MUCH MONEY?

BobC   June 5th, 2009 12:02 pm ET

Has anybody forgotten that Michelle Obama has no officially sanctioned duties? If she fired her entire staff and took up basket weaving it would have no impact on the workings of the government. Is the media so desperate to find turmoil at the White House that they have resorted to the next best thing – a change in the first lady's staff?

To Grin and Bear It: um hm, if I may, that should read "who is kidding whom"...

conniesz   June 5th, 2009 11:56 am ET

Every modern first lady has had a chief of staff. This position should be someone who is close to the first lady – a qualified friend is the very best person for this job. Someone who can tell you when you're wrong because the relationship is strong enough to handle criticism. It needs to be someone the first lady can trust completely. One of the requirements for any chief of staff job is an existing relationship. If you don't understand that, you don't understand the position at all.

Michelle is showing the world that intelligence, community, and family can be combined with grace and beauty. She is as much an ambassador for our way of life as she is the president's wife. This is all to the good. I think that's part of the reason so many on the right try to smear her – she represents what they are constantly saying is their ideal – only she's a liberal Democrat. They just can't stand that the shining example of an American family right now is the Obamas. There is no Republican family that can be held up as a better (or even close) example – it must be painful to watch.

I just love how the Obama critics can find something to criticize in every step the Obamas make. First you complained about the President taking his wife out on a date (he doesn't get one night off while the last President actually spent more days of his presidency on his ranch in TX than he did in DC??). Now there are complaints about the money being spent on an overseas trip? Hasn't every President gone overseas on tax payer money? Funny, the BILLIONS we wasted on an unnecessary war never seemed to bother any of you.

Biased   June 5th, 2009 11:54 am ET

No one is ever going to stop the fact that most of Chicago will end up in the White House at one point, but one thing really has me wondering and no one has ever answered it. It is one of those unimportant little tidbits people throw off as info that just seems to stick......
If the First Lady is so down to earth and so concerned over the poor etc and had been leading such a lifestyle before her desire to enter the White House, as all her adoring fans portray her, then why has she had a makeup artist working for her for over "6 years" which she brought to the White House as well? Why also was it stated that they brought their personal chef to the White House? Who in leading a more simple life as the Obamas portray themselves, has their own personal chef to bring with them to the White House?

MLK, go crawl back under your rock. President Obama won't tell us his "real" name – give me a break! Please explain to me how our President managed to keep this "secret" all these years ...

Do you honestly think that over the 21 months that Barack Obama campaigned, after hundreds of interviews, dozens of debates (not to mention all the background checking that was required by the State of Illinois and the U.S. Federal governments before he was sworn in as a State and the U.S. Senator, respectively), that his "real name" was not found out after being so intensely scrutinized, not only by the public, but by the press and countless pundits?

MLK, he's the real deal and our President. He's intelligent, hardworking, understands what it means to serve the people of the United States and yes, he's even a U.S. citizen (it doesn't matter your parents' country of citizenship; if you are born on U.S. soil – and Hawaii has been a state since Friday, August 21, 1959 and Barack Obama was born August 4, 1961 – you are a U.S. citizen),

To everyone like MLK out there – be a patriot, stop whining about your guy not winning, and start lending a hand to help out your country!

Andrew, Buffalo NY   June 5th, 2009 11:53 am ET

shelly   June 5th, 2009 11:52 am ET

I'm aumused at some of these comments.

She is serving as chief of staff to Michelle Obama...not the presidents chief of staff.

This is the same position that was held by Anita McBride to Laura Bush....this is not some new position created by the Obamas people. Quit freaking out.

Laverne   June 5th, 2009 11:52 am ET

You can always tell when President Obama is on the right track because the repubs continue to spew their hate and unnessary comments. They hate to admit that President Obama doing what President Bush could not do in 8 years!. Bill Bennett said yesterday on CNN that Bush said the exact same things, but everybody chooses to act as if he did not. Well, to bill and others, it fell on death ears, because of his arrogance and his cocky approach and lack of respect for anyone outside of his bubble. It is all about the approach that President Obama is taking, he treats people like human beings and not like they are not even worthy to be in his presence. I am so proud of his as a leader of the free world and proud to call him president. Hating him won't get him out of office, so why not take all that negative energy and do something useful and constructive with it, but unfortunately, most of your repubs are so full of hate that you don't know any other way to be.

James -

The difference between Michelle Obama and Sarah Palin starts and ends with their intellectual capabilities. Michelle Obama is a successful lawyer who is incredibly talented and saavy when it comes to the political system. Sarah Palin has incredible difficulty understanding basic concepts of governance, and frequently puts her foot in her mouth, when she isn't spouting bile about anyone left of fundamentalist Christians. Is there hypocracy in reporting in a favorable light someone who is upbeat and professional like Michelle Obama, and reporting the frequent gaffes by a right-wing nincompoop? None whatsoever. You reap what you sow.

Roger   June 5th, 2009 11:48 am ET

I see the idiotic tongue-wagging Republican bigots are out pretending they actually know what they are talking about in the name of partisanship.

Since when is the First Lady not entitled to have on her staff some one she can work well with? Who knows what problems she may have had with Norris and who cares?

Scott   June 5th, 2009 11:48 am ET

I love all the conservatives here whining. It makes the last 8 years almost bearable. We have the best president in the White House and they don't even know it. Maybe they'll wake up one day but I doubt it.

And by the way, this is a government agency committed to organizing volunteeers for community work.

Hey hate bloggers, that Chicago crony name calling is dead. this is 2009, not grade school. Like all first ladies, Michelle is entitled to appoint anyone she sees fit. So stop your complaining and whining like Hannity, Rush, and the GOP. so STOP with the nonsense and support America and our president.

And stop complaining about the travels of the Obama family, your clowns didn't complain when the bushes went out of the country and besides, do you really think the President and the First Lady gives a rat's butt what you think? I think not LOL

Congratulations to the First Lady in her choice and to the President on his wonderful Cairo speech which I have now read twice. They are truly a first couple who make us proud. Also, WOOHOO!, more good news, economists expected 504,000 lost jobs , but there were 345,000 in May. I just love positive news!
-----------------------------–

Really? I mean, REALLY??? Youn think 345,000 jobs lost it good news??? What happed to all the jobs that were supposed to be created? I mean the permanant ones. Not the photo-op ones like the 25 policement in Ohio who have mostly been let go after a photo and a month or two of work.....

345,000 jobs lost is good news???? Sigh....

To all the complainers - please compare the offices/staff of the previous President to this one - the same positions, the same travel arrangements. You're reacting as if no other President has travelled or had a wife, or had "cronies" or friends. Do remember what the previous President accomplished (I use the term loosely). And get over it. If this one doesn't work out - try voting the bush back in.

gloria   June 5th, 2009 11:39 am ET

For 'the General', don't say anything unless you know what you're talking about. CNCS is a government-run organization that consolidated several federal volunteer programs, including Americorps, SeniorCorps, and Learn and Serve America. There's a reason ACORN was not included in the consolidation; ever locale is independently run and too 'grassroots' to be maintained (or held accountable) at a federal level.

Osama Bin Laden-please tell me if it was also rediculous that Mrs. Laura Bush, as well as many previous First Ladies have had a chief of staff, or is it just this first lady that you do not believe needs one? I do not recall any complaints that previous first ladies having a chief of staff.

Mark   June 5th, 2009 11:35 am ET

It was a country, once not so far ago, where the First Lady was worst then the Dictator. Her name was Elena Ceausescu. As you Americans, are not able to read or write more then 3 lines in your life time you could not have been informed about the disastrous First Lady Ceausescu. When I see Michelle and her actions I remember about the other First Lady. A First Lady that wanted only power. Nothing more, nothing less. This is what Michelle wants, power. The Obamas will just get more and more power until Americans will understand that the greatest mistake America could do is to vote that couple. But at that moment the damage would be so wide, so spread and so irreversible that America will be known for its first Dictators, not for its values.

Michael   June 5th, 2009 11:34 am ET

TCM, your comments show your narrow vision.

The deficit is so big because in the last 8 years we added 5 TRILLION to it! And those deficits bought us the worst recession since the 30's because we wasted it on Iraq and giving it away to the wealthy.

Stop being so blind.

geecee   June 5th, 2009 11:31 am ET

So what? Is there something nefarious behind the change? Some scandal? You make the headlines look like a sinister plot is afoot, when all it was is that Norris was leaving to take another job, and Michelle appointed a qualified, old friend to take her place as Chief of Staff. Big deal, but you have to make it news so the haters can post their dispicable comments, right? Sorry, once again, to disappoint you "fail" advocates. The Obamas are both doing a fine job as President and First Lady, and they will continue to do so. Blimpbag should be tried for treason. I hope the Secret Service arrests him, the guy is inciting insurrection at a minimum! Aren't there laws against insurrection? Hateful speech and riling people up to overthrow their government should not be a First Amendment Right. And I see Palin is still up to her old hateful remarks, like that did her a lot of good during the election. What a dolt.

lkb   June 5th, 2009 11:30 am ET

For all the dems that say the repubs will whine even about this....right you are. I have to wonder where this white house is taking us with all the "favors" they have to pay back. To me, this leads to corruption in an already dem controlled government. I think this is what our forefathers fought against.

Just think, she could give that job to someone that really needs it instead of a multi millionaire.

Eric Ethridge   June 5th, 2009 11:27 am ET

This is one of those hirings, that while the candidate might be vetted and worthwhile, the selection seems to be based more on prior relationships then a quantitiative process that garners the best person for the job. It is one of those sad factors of political life – the people we choose to lead our nation get to choose their own 'personal advisors' who help guide them in areas and have a great opportunity to assert their own, possibly misguided, influence. This is a pattern that has been replayed throughout history. The King of Assyria in 7th Century B.C. was supposedly guided by their God; however it is shown that both the royal family and the kings personal eunuch had enormous influence in his descision making.

Darlene   June 5th, 2009 11:27 am ET

From The Business Insider, June 4, 2009:

Ben Bernanke's language yesterday on the future of the economy and the risks of our ballooning debt was startlingly frank coming from a Fed Chairman.

Specifically, Bernanke warned that the recovery is likely to be weak and that Obama and Congress need to get spending under control or the interest payments will start to destroy us.

He agreed that the size of the deficit is contributing to rising interest rates (very startling point, especially in light of Treasury's happy chirps that rates are rising because the economy is recovering.) He also cast doubt on the effectiveness of the stimulus programs.

Most importantly, Bernanke also raised concern about our impending debt-to-GDP ratio of 70%, which is well below the Obama administration's (probably optimistic) forecast of 100% for the next decade.

THIS IS CHANGE ALL RIGHT!!!!
