Axelrod: 'It's me,' Obama said of stone carving

(CNN)– President Barack Obama got a welcome surprise during a short sightseeing jaunt that capped off his recent visit to Egypt.

While touring the pyramids at Giza, Obama came across a hieroglyphic that bore a striking resemblance to the 44th president – especially Obama’s prominent ears which Obama himself has pointed out many times since arriving on the national political stage.

“’It’s me,’” White House senior adviser David Axelrod says Obama said when the presidential entourage came across the hieroglyphic.

“And I have to confess that the ears were a giveaway,” Axelrod said in an interview that aired Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union.

“It really did look like him. I was wondering whether someone chiseled that in there in honor of our visit. But apparently this was done some thousands of years ago.”

“We didn’t know what to make of it. But our guide said he thinks the president might be descended from King Tut,” Axelrod also told John King.

“We have no proof of that. We’re not claiming that. We think perhaps he says that to all the visiting dignitaries,” Axelrod quickly added perhaps trying to head off another partisan attack on Obama’s global celebrity status.

“But the ears were unmistakable, I must say.”

No teleprompter in the carving, so it can't be Uhbama.

    Those aren't ears.

Those are hands being raised in the air. Look closely. Why does everyone think it's a glyph with big ears?

Wow... I can read it here, see he is a Muslim, second 1000 years BC duh, Egyptians were the rulers of the Continent Of Africa.

How many people out there would love to tour the Pyramids, I know I would, to see the magnificent beauty of these wonders, Remember these pyramids are part of the seven wonders of the world. Standing for all these years, the obelisk, the statues of Ramsey the II, to Cleopatra, to Nefertari and King Tut the most famous of them all. Or even visiting the Cairo Museum where all the treasures of Ancient Eygpt.

While this is a cute story, couldn't we at least give more meaningful mention to the President's historic initiatives both in the Middle East and hear at home?

It's odd you would be willing to speculate so specifically as to Axelrod's intentions while failing to ever include mention of his obvious joking. It's not the best move you could have made here, and it comes across as a rather deliberate attempt to add an unrelated controversy, which is not great journalism.

It is thought that King Tut was murdered by an close official because his skull was bashed in and only a person of great importance could get near enough to harm him. America feels you Axelrod...

The country was economically weak and in turmoil during the reign of King Tut. He sought to restore diplomatic relations with other kingdoms but despite his efforts for improved relations battles were recorded in his mortuary temple at Thebes. His tomb contained body armour but there is speculation that he did not take part personally in any of these battles.

    Wow.., the similarities ARE striking!!

I like our President. He is trying so hard to get people to treat each other with respect and dignity. And he sets the example.

I sure wish we had more people like him in the world.

Well, I'm sure some people are going to insist he's being cocky.
But anyone secure enough to associate himself with an image with gigantic oversized ears is gotta be pretty humble. It's almost making fun of yourself.

Barack's got some pretty big ears! That's cool he can laugh about it.
