Palin: Defense cuts are 'a sign of weakness'

Palin is in the middle of a low-key trip to the East Coast.

(CNN) – In her strongest public remarks to date on the matter, Sarah Palin admonished the Obama adminstration on Saturday for proposing cuts to Alaska's missile defense network, a move she said would leave her state and the rest of the country vulnerable in the case of a future attack.

The administration cuts, which were announced by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates in April and would be enacted in the next fiscal year, would trim $1.2 billion from the Pentagon's missile defense programs. The expansion of a missile field in Fort Greely, Alaska would be halted under the proposed budget.

"Reducing Alaska's defense readiness in these perilous times is a show of weakness, it is not a sign of strength," Palin said during a celebration in upstate New York honoring native son William Seward, who negotiated the purchase of Alaska in 1867 as Secretary of State. Video of the speech was posted by the Web site "Conservatives4Palin."

Palin said Alaska's missile defense system is now more vital than ever, particularly in the wake of North Korea's recent nuclear and missile tests. She said a missile fired from North Korea could easily reach Alaska and other parts of the country.

"And yet, Washington thinks it's best now to actually cut defense spending in Alaska by hundreds of millions of dollars," she said. "Now that is an odd priority there."

Palin said she will "argue with every ounce of my being for Washington to pay attention."

"That is not always easy, but it is right," she said. "It is clear to many that some of our priorities as a nation are kind of reversed, and it is my imperative, and it should be all of our imperative, that we get our government priorities right, because if they are misdirected, obviously America is going turn into something that we don't recognize."

At another moment during her speech, the former vice presidential candidate got a cheer from the crowd by repeating a line of attack that was frequently used against Obama during last year's presidential campaign.

Palin explained that Alaskans believe in "the roots of our country, so deep, so strong."

"They're what we need to cling to," she said. "Clinging to, you know, that includes our clinging to our second amendment rights, and our faith in God. Many of us do cling to that strong faith in God."

Palin? Who is she again? Is she still in the news?

But seriously, do Republicans understand anything besides missiles. America already spends a huge amount on defense. Do they know how to answer anything without violence or a military strike?

How long will it take us to leave the Bush legacy of "shoot first and ask questions later" behind us?

It's not how much you spend, it's how you spend it. Just ask the New York Knicks. They always have one of the highest payrolls in the NBA but year after year they still suck.

It's quality not quantity Sarah. Cutting the defense budget doesn't make us weaker just the same as spending more doesn't make us stronger. For those slamming Obama and are using this as the sole basis for their argument, please see above again. Quit thinking in black and white only.

"A Sign Of Weakness"? OK, I am still surprised as to why anyone would care about what this woman has to say. Governor Palin, you and YOUR running mate John McCain lost the last election using these same types of unfortunate statements, maybe you should just fade away for awhile or learn that Africa is a CONTINENT and learn the countries that are involved in NAFTA. By the way, thats not reporting from a "biased" CNN, it was Fox News that reported this.

Sarah and her flock should just put on their Power Ranger outfits and stand on the Alaskan shoreline with some water pistols......that'll save the country tons in Defense spending. you betcha.

Who the hell cares what this useless, lying, brainless, bimbo has to say! She should shut her big mouth and concentrate on issues that SHE needs to take care of. Like........hmmmm, bashing Levi, shooting wolves from an airplane, taking her kids all over the country on taxpayers money, doing hilarious interviews.............I could go on forever.

comment on Axelrod's statement that the GOP critism of Sotomayor is simply a side show:

he says that Sotomayor was simply saying that each of us is made up of the sum total of our parts and experiences and wasn't any sign of racism.

Let us say we believe Axelrod .... then what Sotomayor said was that a Latina (especially if she grew up poor and made out well) ... has a much broader and deeper set of experiences than any white male could ever hope to have.

Sounds like she is pre-judging to me ... so she is prejudiced against white males in favor of latinas .....

Now I'm convinced Sarah Palin is a complete knucklehead. Obama's speech was ground breaking. For the first time since Jimmy Carter, I think we have the right person in office who can bring peace to the world. I doubt we will ever be the economic powerhouse we used to be (unless we manage to lift our dependancy on oil), but we'll at least have peace.

So first Obama is bad for spending, and now he's bad for budget cuts. You know, if Republicans didn't complain about EVERYTHING having to do with our new president, maybe we'd take them more seriously.

Sarah ( not smarter than a fifth grader ) Palin is only crying because the cuts are for spending in her home state. If the cuts were in Montana she would not care less. She has cried and cried about Government pork spending when in fact Alaska has been the worst offender of pork barrel politics. Sarah needs to stay home and tend to Wasilla (the Meth capitol of Alaska) and to her ever increasingly disfunctional familiy.

I think I'll believe generals and advisers to Obama who back his plan over hysterical speech from Palin, whose only interests are the loss of defense revenue to Alaska, and her run for President in 2012. Thank God she will never make it out of the Republican primaries, and I doubt the winner will be dumb enough to choose her as VP again.

There is no need to protect ourselves with might. Obama is going to talk to the rest of the world and they will not want to kill us any more! Sarah and anyone that thinks we need to spend money on this is stupid. We will give the world a hug and they will hug us back! Too easy...

To whom is this criticism pointed? Is it the Dept of Defense and Robert Gates? It was afterall the Dept of Defense from which this reduction was suggested. My guess is that Mr. Gates knows somewhat more about what is required and what is not. The Kook from Alaska hasn't been heard from in awhile so she must have wanted to see her name back in print outside of the Wasilla paper. That is, if one exists.

If Sarah Palin is the future of the Republican Party, then they are in deep trouble indeed. This is not about the defense of Alaska or any part of America – a topic she is largely clueless about as about just about anything else, as was aptly demontstrated during the Republican trainwreck campaign last fall. It's about a pet project for her home state that is now being canned.

Weakness means you have to be the biggest bully on the playground. Between United States, Russia and China, we can destroy this world in a weeks time. We can be strong and we can be diplomatic. I cannot understand the why, why we would have to spend $50,000 on a toilet seat, or $10,000 on a wrench. That was waste, this is what was meant by cutting waste out of the Military. I don't think he wanted to cut out what would protect our country.

As for Sarah Palin, worry about Alaska, since you are failing as Governor,

So what would be the "obvious"reason NK tested missles during other president's terms?

Not to sound insensitive, but if North Korea decides to attack the United States, it's not going to set its sights on Alaska. It's going to go for Los Angeles and anything on the west coast. Who cares about Alaska?
