Palin: Defense cuts are 'a sign of weakness'

Palin is in the middle of a low-key trip to the East Coast.

(CNN) – In her strongest public remarks to date on the matter, Sarah Palin admonished the Obama adminstration on Saturday for proposing cuts to Alaska's missile defense network, a move she said would leave her state and the rest of the country vulnerable in the case of a future attack.

The administration cuts, which were announced by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates in April and would be enacted in the next fiscal year, would trim $1.2 billion from the Pentagon's missile defense programs. The expansion of a missile field in Fort Greely, Alaska would be halted under the proposed budget.

"Reducing Alaska's defense readiness in these perilous times is a show of weakness, it is not a sign of strength," Palin said during a celebration in upstate New York honoring native son William Seward, who negotiated the purchase of Alaska in 1867 as Secretary of State. Video of the speech was posted by the Web site "Conservatives4Palin."

Palin said Alaska's missile defense system is now more vital than ever, particularly in the wake of North Korea's recent nuclear and missile tests. She said a missile fired from North Korea could easily reach Alaska and other parts of the country.

"And yet, Washington thinks it's best now to actually cut defense spending in Alaska by hundreds of millions of dollars," she said. "Now that is an odd priority there."

Palin said she will "argue with every ounce of my being for Washington to pay attention."

"That is not always easy, but it is right," she said. "It is clear to many that some of our priorities as a nation are kind of reversed, and it is my imperative, and it should be all of our imperative, that we get our government priorities right, because if they are misdirected, obviously America is going turn into something that we don't recognize."

At another moment during her speech, the former vice presidential candidate got a cheer from the crowd by repeating a line of attack that was frequently used against Obama during last year's presidential campaign.

Palin explained that Alaskans believe in "the roots of our country, so deep, so strong."

"They're what we need to cling to," she said. "Clinging to, you know, that includes our clinging to our second amendment rights, and our faith in God. Many of us do cling to that strong faith in God."

Hey TangledThorns and TxBob: What's your suggestion for North Korea? Blow them up with Lasers like Newt said ??

Yep – lets all have nuclear weapons so we can obliterate the entire human race..

Go back to the 1950's guys...

Perhaps that spiked hair nit-wit dictator Kim Jung is playing for attention or is that way too much to comprehend ??

Lastly – what can we do?? Seriously – what are our options AFTER 1 million starving North Korean soilders trounce the living hell out of South Korea.

Palin has no idea how to run a beer party at a Brewery let alone get tangled in foriegn policy..

"Now that is an odd priority there. "

Palin's priorty is to keep people's attention on her. Alaska has had an acting Attornery General for how long? Palin can't even run a small state.

In 2012, Palin wants access to the nuke trigger. Now, that is one heck of an ODD priority.

Is it just me, or did we just get through eight years of having a "tough guy" president, and not have it work so well?

I'd take smart over tough any day.

Oh here comes the christo-fascists in defense of their diva. This one got a taste for the national spotlight and doesn't want to see it go. She might when she fails again in 2012. She has no clue about national or global level politics. Still, the lemmings think she is purty.

Palin would bash her own mother if she thought it would keep her in the mix. She had her chance and showed the world what an idiot she is.

Sorry, but Palin is deserving of all the ridicule she gets. TxBob, if you really think Palin is smarter than Obama, you need to get over your political wound licking and face reality.

Although reading /hearing anything Palin says burns my eyes and ears, respectively, I'm happy she is still stirring the pot. No matter what Obama does he'll always win that comparison, so keep talking Sarah... its clearly a sign of 'dumbness'.

It still amazes me how this country voted for such a man. He goes over seas and admits he is muslim, talks muslim and quotes the quran as being holy. In addition, spends thousands of our dollars to go on a date night with his wife. God help this nation. God gave us a Savior, I am looking for a President!!

Palin is about as smart as the average Pacific walrus. Her criticizing anyone about anything is a joke. If intelligence were water, she would still be dehydrated. What a moron, and what is worse, is that Alaskans actually voted her into office!

I would love nothing in 2008 more than seeing Gov Palin in the same stage debating President Obama on the same stage. This is someone who should be in class learning all the policy stuffs rather than trying to remain relevant. The bar has been raised, Gov palin.

Oh well, I am glad that she has decided to "screew all the political correctness"

I just don't think Alaska is a big target for terrorists/enemies. It's too sparsely populated. They want the biggest bang for their buck. They'll hit NYC again if anything. Maybe LA or Chicago. Alaska is safe, why spend money on it? Makes no sense. Obama is right. Palin as usual is retarded.

Why is Palin still speaking out on the national stage? She's already proved her incompetence time and time again - I guess she also wants to defend against the Russians.

I never get tired of hearing how this person speaks. It is truly fascinating to see how she connects words and phrases. It doesn't matter that it is all nonsense, it is truly special. Please keep reporting more of her speeches. It is the most unique and entertaining new form of English since the advent of Rap. Or, Bush.
I'm equally fascinated by those that agree with her.

Sarah Palin obviously didn't pay attention in English class. As far as intelligence goes, I'll take a law degree.

Palin needs to be "news" to have a prayer in 2012 so _ANYTHING_ is simple campaign rhetoric. Her comprehension of world of affairs remains woefully uninformed.

Come on Sarah. According to you we can see the Russians coming from your front porch. After all that has been exposed about the Palin's Jerry Springer lifestyle, when do we finally get to stop hearing about her? Her opinion doesn't matter. She is a political joke.

Didn't Knuckle-Head say that the deficit, not while W was in office, was a threat to national defense? If so, cutting spending would be congruent to that complaint, correct? No wait, I think that she would rather cut the education budget since she did not get one for herself or her children.

Why is any media outlet giving her airtime?

If North Korea manages to build a functional nuclear ICBM or whatever the fear is, I can guarantee that they're not going to waste it on Alaska. Settle down, Sarah - maybe you can round up a volunteer corps to fly around in helicopters and shoot down incoming missiles.

The good thing about President Obama is that he will just ignore Sarah Palin's idiotic remarks. He doesn't waste his time dealing with white trailer trash like her.

I think we should all take notice–for surely Gov. Palin is far, far, far more qualified to direct national security than someone like Secretary Gates and the Pentagon staff. God knows she has a wealth of experience in this arena and after all, she knows how to shoot moose-which bodes well for Alaska's security against North Korea and Russia–let alone an attack from Canada!
