Laura Bush: I understand why Cheney's speaking out

Former first lady Laura Bush said she knew why Cheney is speaking out -- and why her husband isn't.

Former first lady Laura Bush said she knew why Cheney is speaking out - and why her husband isn't.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Former first lady Laura Bush said Monday she knows why former Vice President Dick Cheney feels the need to attack President Obama's policies, and publicly defend his own administration's legacy.

But she explained why her husband, former President George Bush, has not given any public interviews or commented critically on the new administration since leaving office in January.

"I think that's [Cheney's] right as a citizen of the U.S., and I think he also feels obligated, and so I understand why he wants to speak out," Laura Bush said in an interview on ABC's Good Morning America broadcast Monday. "On the other hand, George feels like as a former president that he owes President Obama his silence on issues, and that there's no reason to second guess any decisions that he makes."

President Bush has given few public addresses, and no one-on-one interviews, since Obama's inauguration.

Bush sounded a positive note over at least one of Obama's decisions: his pick of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to serve on the Supreme Court, calling her "a very interesting and good nominee."

"As a woman, I'm proud that there might be another woman on the court," she said. "So we'll see what happens, but I wish her well."

The former first lady said that she and her husband have discussed the civil war over the Republican Party's future, but downplayed the intra-party conflict.

"It's like creative tension within a party for people to talk about... how they want to be represented," she said.

It will be interesting to see if Hussein follows the same way when he is no longer a blight on the leadership of this country. Knowing liberals, I doubt it, no grace, no dignity.

I saw this interview this morning, and even though I'm on the other side of the political spectrum, the lady has a lot of class. I loved her comment on the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor.

Thank you Laura Bush for being the classy lady that you are–and your husband for loving his country first. Dick C has every right to defend his legacy–it is the liberals that started the destruction game–and will probably live to regret it(Pelosi lies, etc)

She understands 'why' he wants to speak out but doesn't comment on 'whether' he should – that's the issue. I understand why he wants to speak out – he wants to save his rotten reputation. But he shouldn't speak out because he had his time and now it's someone else's time.

Cheney needs to be quiet and let the administration that the American people have voted in to go to work.

I know you married for money Laura, but your choice of a husband has destroyed any respect that I have for you. So shut up idiot!

I think Bush is just letting Cheney do the dirty work for him.
What Cheney is trying to do is cover up and justify all the lies, mistakes, illegal activities of the past. He is worried about their
being held accountable for their actions.
I do hope they are held accountable some way, but do not want
to see our country drug through more mud because of their
decisions. It is a time for healing within our fragile interior.

class is class. if the other republicans had 1/2 her class maybe they would be a party to deal with instead of always being on a party of negative agendas or self serving agendas. Like Bush senior's wife, these ladies would have both won over the people-now let tricky dick and rush limpballs play with colter so that we keep obama as president in 4 years.

Wow, Bush approves of Sotomayor. What a great satisfaction to know that Judge Sotomayor has the approval of Dictator Bush.

Every time I see a picture of Laura Bush, it reminds me of that movie "The Stepford Wives".

At least Mr and Mrs Bush still have class. There will come a day when we will all miss the good ole Bush days. Unfortunately, I think it is coming sooner then we think!!

Oh, Laura, go put some cookies in the oven and read a book while they are baking. You don't have any idea what you are talking about.

How ironic that the one Republican with any real class was a Democrat until she married into the regime. In Laura-ese, this is pretty much a slap across Cheney's face.

Laura: We don't care what you think about what Cheney thinks. Another non-news item.

Boy...Laura....married to a loser and now you come out in support of another loser. Rarely has an ex VP taken on himself to be part of such avocal attack after leaving office. Cheny just needs to take his draft dodging rear-end back to what hole he crawled out of.

I also understand why Cheney spoke out..Laura....he stills thinks that he is relevant......now he is just thw chump we always knew he was.

Laura, had my fellow Americans second guessed a lot of things like 1) Researching the claims of Saddam Hussein's alleged 'Weapons of Mass Destruction and the reasons why we were going to war, 2) Bush's economic policies, and 3) Voting for him twice, perhaps we wouldn't be in the mess we're in right now.

George Bush is a former president but Dick Cheney is just a citizen? hmmm.
George, Laura, and Dick: If torture "works", where does it stop? if waterboarding is okay because it "works", is shooting a suspect in the knee? How about shooting his wife in the knee? How about shooting his child in the knee? And who makes that call-Dick Cheney?
Rule of law is rule of law... there are no "exceptions", that's why it is the rule of law. Dictators find exceptions. Hitler found plenty. Why did an entire administration of the United States not understand that?

Laura you have said nothing that the people don't all ready know.
Cheney has direaha at the mouth. Go right a book or something, stay out of the media. Hope your husband is treating you better than he did the American people.

oh, so she can talk. the reason her husband doesn't weigh in on issues is he doesn't have anybody telling him what do say anymore.

Former First Lady Laura Bush is the Presidents wife, of course she is going to defend her husband. As for Cheney, he has been flip flopping on a lot of things. Bush's popularity is going up because he is respecting Obama and he is being a man about it, not some sort of puppet...
