From

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (CNN) - How do you get away with skipping classes on your last day of school?

Make sure you get your hands on a presidential pardon.

President Barack Obama held a town hall meeting on Thursday in Green Bay, Wisconsin to discuss his health care agenda - but he also took a little time to write an all-important "get out of school" note.

A young girl named Kennedy attended the town hall with her father, who was called on to ask a question.

Her father, John Corpus, started his query saying he hoped his daughter wouldn't get into trouble for missing the last day of school.

"Do you need me to write a note?" Obama asked.

Clearly assuming that Obama was just kidding, Corpus continued with his question - only to be interrupted by the president.

"No, no, I'm serious. What's your daughter's name?" Obama said, as he started to write a note. "I'm going to write to Kennedy's teacher."

He then walked over to the girl and handed her the note: "To Kennedy’s Teacher, Please excuse Kennedy’s absence…she’s with me. Barack Obama"

No word yet on whether the president's get out of school free card did the trick.

Giving Class to Classy People of America!

RepubliKLANs Are Stupid As Stupid Does   June 11th, 2009 4:10 pm ET

The girl Kennedy already missed class okay; and the father was fine with it!

It was a nice gesture from the president to let the school know so she doesn't get in trouble!!!!

The only fitting comment to this is to ask who in God's green earth cares.

Azreal   June 11th, 2009 4:09 pm ET

Isn't he an ugly man Repubs? dont you just fear for your childrens safety everytime he's around? This Frankenstein, this monster! Oh wait a min...Like Frankenstein this POTUS was created by your party's own actions, just think, if there were no 8 horrible years of the Bush admin there would be no 4 years of Obama, so BLAME YOURSELVES!

She should have stayed in school, she's too young to understand any of this or the impact. That age through 25 they think everything is free and provided by someone else.

Sorry, to bust your bubble, but even a 3 year no the name of this President. I see why some many hate this President. So you are never to young to know who and what about the President of the USA. THIS PRESIDENTS POPORITY IS PRICELESS!

Your comments was pure sour grapes. PLEASE GET A LIVE.

Eric – you know what? Republicans like you were the dominant voice once and were and will always be respected. However, your party now is dominated by a completely different republicn type and I am sorry to say they are destroying your party. Where is the leadership and How did it get this way?

glen   June 11th, 2009 4:08 pm ET

What a nice memory for the child.

The President has class!

As for you whining wing nuts, see if Rush will write you a note to get you out of being a citizen.

Nice to have a down-to-earth President. The last day of school is one big party/clean up day, anyway : )

George   June 11th, 2009 4:07 pm ET

What the President did for this little girl was gracious and natural because he is the father of two young girls. So, he understood what the girl's father was saying. Mr. Kennedy deserves credit for mentioning his daughter had skipped class to see President Obama.

Who knows what the experience might do for this little girl in 20 years.

Let's smile! It is a young, happy looking child involved in this story. To those who are recommending that the note be kept as a souvenir, listen up: This is the age of technology, she can have it notarized, scanned and sent in PDF format via e-mail to the teacher If school is closed. After all, the story is most likely in her local newspaper, so there's proof. To the person who questions how valid this excuse will be if school is about closed, get this. School remains open to the teachers who will tally the attendance and incorporate it in the report card which has most likely NO YET BEEN COMPLETED. Satisfied?

SOL   June 11th, 2009 4:07 pm ET

Irate Republican   June 11th, 2009 4:06 pm ET

Geez!

Can we get this guy to focus on the US economy? Somebody tell him that he won – no need to keep campaigning!! I don't care about his date with his wife, his kids, or his time spent talking to schoolkids – we need a full-time President, not somebody spending our tax dollars jetting around to give stupid stump speeches. C'mon!

Justin Tran   June 11th, 2009 4:06 pm ET

This is the reason why I voted for Obama! As you all can see this president cares! and I DO love Obama! btw! I'm a registered republican and I don't like the republican views at all right now. ESPECIALLY Rush Limbo! Yeah LIMBO! Go suck a ROCK would you? get your fat-ass self some more of that Oxicottons or some illegal drugs oversea for yourself and go have a fight with Mike Steele for a good time. Ediot!

Jackie Wells   June 11th, 2009 4:05 pm ET

Good news ia also news worthy. Thank you CNN for finally sharing a positive story about our President. I was about to give up on you due to the negativity you insist on being newsworthy. Our past president messed up the country and was an embarrassment everytime he spoke. We have a president that cares and can speak.

Simon   June 11th, 2009 4:05 pm ET

The only purpose Republicans have these days is to try to hope Obama fails so that their guy won't look so bad.

What a pathetic bunch of haters and losers.

And why didn't they complain while Bush was running up 4 trillion dollars in debt during supposed good times but they do when Obama does it once to try to head of a new great depression? What a bunch of hypocrites.

Jim, Beverly Hills CA.   June 11th, 2009 4:04 pm ET

I read in the paper today that the Presiden't old "Pastor", Jeremiah Wright, had tried to call the president, but that "Them Jews" would not let the call go through.

Perhaps if the President had not spoken in Egypt and made such anti Israeli remarks there, that gunman would not have been motivated to shoot up the Holocaut Museum.

carol   June 11th, 2009 4:04 pm ET

Oh, priceless!! I get teary-eyed whenever the President goes out of his way to get involved with mainstream America!! I believe that was one of the reasons we all voted for him and the "Change" he brings to this country.

As for as the 10-year old, she has a keepsake for life!

Cher   June 11th, 2009 4:04 pm ET

Shane and others who are appalled that the girl's father would have her miss the last day of school (when you get your report card, clean out your desk, and stack up books), did you complain when Sarah Palin kept her kids out of school from September to November to campaign? I recall her younger daughter complaining when she got back about how far behind she was now with her schoolwork. Get real, or at least consistent!

Ambrose Smith, Borrego Springs, California   June 11th, 2009 4:04 pm ET

I will not apologize for actually LIKING my President.

Comprende Republicans?

Truth Be Told   June 11th, 2009 4:03 pm ET

going with her father to see and hear the president speak is an education by itself, whether it's bill clinton or george bush or president obama. i really don't know which part of that the hatemongers do not understand.

i pulled my younger son from one week of class to be with my wife and his older sibling to see oxford university where his older sibling went to school in. he saw, he felt and experienced what's so special about the university. that was an education for him, and for us. my younger son wrote his term paper about the different colleges in the university. he graduated valedictorian from his class. he is now a medical student.

lori   June 11th, 2009 4:03 pm ET

Please Universal Healthcare all the way. I don't care about waiting an hour or 2 to see a doctor. I do that already anyway.

I had a hernia removed at an outpatient facility that stated they were in my insurance plan and I doubled checked with my insurance. Bill came out to $22,650 and my insurance company only paid $19,350. I was stuck with paying $2,325 because they said the facility was not in my network.

Didn't matter that I checked with them and the facility did too, they didn't want to pay it. The facility was kind enought to forgive the $2,325 and said I owed them nothing. If it weren't for the kindness of the director of the facility, I would've been stuck with that bill and would've wiped out all my savings.

Sniffit   June 11th, 2009 4:03 pm ET

@ southerncousin, who asked "When will the press get off its love affair with this fraud and start treating America fair. "

You think it's fair that the rest of America has to listen to the MSM print and talk about blatantly inaccurate comments like "this is socialism" and "she's a racist" as though they deseve equal footing with sane, educated, rational and reasonable commentary? Get a clue! The media is MORE THAN FAIR to the GOP at this point: It's HELPING the GOP. The GOP has dug itself into an enormous hole and day after day digs itself deeper by saying some of the most insipid, baseless, virulent, spiteful and societally damaging nonsense, but what does the MSM do with it? PRINTS IT ALL OVER THE PALCE AND TALKS ABOUT IT AS THOUGH IT'S LEGIT. Don't crap where you eat bro...you should be thanking the MSM every day that they choose not to ignore the GOP's idiocy because it helps them make money to drum up controversy.

Anonymous   June 11th, 2009 4:03 pm ET

Does anyone else think that is is funny that he knew her name before he even asked. Maybe it was just the way it was written but ,by saying "No, no, I'm serious. What's your daughter's name?" Obama said, as he started to write a note. "I'm going to write to Kennedy's teacher." makes it sound like it was staged

Rocko in AZ   June 11th, 2009 4:03 pm ET

I find it absolutely disgusting that our illegally-elected "President" would send the message that it's okay for children to skip school. I hope you Obamaniacs are willing to buy the note on Ebay because that's the only income she's going to have after the economy is ruined even more when we become socialist and this Kennedy (what a name *hurl*) tries to get a job at a McDonald's after spending the next several years thinking it's okay to skip school. My hard-earned tax dollars are going to have to pay for her eventual 6 children because everyone knows the poor people have more children and get handouts thanks to Obama. He basically just ruined her life and it makes me sick none of you LOONS don't see it.

John, Rochester MN   June 11th, 2009 4:02 pm ET

Wow, hatred and vitriol from the right, even on a fun little thing like this. Shocking.
And this truancy crap is ridiculous. The last day of school is meaningless. That father should be commended for giving his daughter an opportunity to see the president in person. How many of you got that chance as a kid?

Points   June 11th, 2009 4:01 pm ET

Just wanted to show some points...

1) Not every thing "news worthy" needs to be depressing, that is one reason why our country is as bad as it is right now. Good uplifting, human kindness stories are good for Morale.

2) The President may be good at Photo-ops, but I highly doubt he planned this out, what is wrong with something like this? Photographers are hired to capture the moment to preserve it for history. Not every thing has to be turned into something negative.

3) ... I will leave my third argument for another day, I'm too tired right now :( .... MODERATE 3rd PARTY LONELINESS FOR THE WIN!!!!

Susan   June 11th, 2009 4:01 pm ET

Is this really important enough to have this much hostility about? So what if the president gave a note to a little girl. It doesn't have global ramifications. And I'm not just taking to the conservatives here. The liberals are just as bad.

Jim, Beverly Hills CA.   June 11th, 2009 4:01 pm ET

I heard on the Letterman Show that the daughter of the Alaska governor was knocked up by a New York baseball player!

Does this mean that she won't be marrying the young man in Alaska?

Has anyone got any info. on this?

Anonymous   June 11th, 2009 4:01 pm ET

Refreshing to have a President who takes the time to go out and LISTEN to the citizens of our nation. His skills and experience as a community organizer are invaluable iin his role as POTUS. Go out, ask for feedback, listen to feedback and then help the group move forward. What is so difficult about that concept?

gl, From Pittsburgh   June 11th, 2009 4:01 pm ET

I would love for my son to get a note from the President coming to see him. This is a life time experience for any kid. You haters need to stop your maddess. Did you get the message yet, you hate filled anger agains this President is making this nuts kill.

Lisa   June 11th, 2009 4:00 pm ET

For crying out loud...it's a feel good story. Not everything is political. Get a grip, desperate Repubs.

By the way, for those who trotted out the Obama's "date" to NYC....not sure how that matters here....but...

1) I can go to NYC for a play. You can go to NYC for a play. Why can't the President? He's not allowed to drive there like us even if he wanted to. I for one am glad the man wants to get out into the world around him.
2) Look up how often Mr. Bush took the whole dog and pony show out to Crawford, Texas–how about some dollar values for his travels? One website says he traveled there 77 times and spent nearly 500 days of his presidency there.........HUM-M-M-M-M.

Eric   June 11th, 2009 3:59 pm ET

Oh, give it a rest. Sheesh. I'm a conservative Republican, but it's idiots who bash something like this that give conservatives and Republicans a bad name.

The guy was clever. Good. He's my president; I want him to be clever. I may not agree with many of his policies, and I'd rather someone with different policies be in office, but that doesn't mean I have to hate him or criticize what he does.

Fellow conservatives: we're not going to win any hearts or minds by being petty and sniping at everything. Lighten up!

KT   June 11th, 2009 3:56 pm ET

Wow, no one complained when Sarah Pathetic was keeping her children out of school and dragging a special needs newborn all around the country. Hypocrites!

This is a joke, the Republicans are learning that what goes around comes around. When the Supreme Court elected W in 2000, the Republicans told everyone to get over it. When W was increasing spending, the Republicans didn't care because they were fattening their pockets (Haliburton, Enron, etc.....). But now that they money is going to fund the less fortunate (i.e. the ones the Republicans have been stepping on for most of the last 30 years), its a problem, give me a break...The people have spoken and they are tired of the good ole boy network and the way the GOP has damaged America's image domestically and abroad. The Democrats have been charged with changing things and if they do no better, then they'll find themselves just as irrelevant as the GOP is now

If you ever went to school, you would know you did practically nothing on your last day of school, Most of you reading this have never seen a sitting US president up close but I hope that if you get the same opportunity this little girl's dad had to share that experience with his loving daughter, you would do the same. It is a great life experience.

MMorrisson   June 11th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

This is really stupid. I can't believe that everyone is getting all worked up about this! If it was planned, then well done. A very good publicity stunt. If it wasn't, all the better. It shows that are President has a sense of humor and is very clever. As far as I'm concerned, CNN should be praised for reporting on something light-hearted now and again, and I gaurantee that this girl will have that note framed on her wall with this picture when she is 80. That is a good memory!

All you people that can't complain enough it seems, GET A LIFE and GET OVER IT!

southerncousin   June 11th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

That is wonderful, David Letterman is making perverted remarks about Palins daughters and the lefties are defending him. When will the press get off its love affair with this fraud and start treating America fair. Is it any wonder that 43% of the respondents to the CNN story on Letterman actually blamed Palin and her daughters?

Peter   June 11th, 2009 3:54 pm ET

That is so humane Mr President! down to earth man of the people for the people May the God of Abraham, Isaack and Jacob bless you!!

Robert in L.A.   June 11th, 2009 3:54 pm ET

Wow, I can see why the GOP fears this President. He is smart, charismatic and has a way with the common people.

clr   June 11th, 2009 3:54 pm ET

I could care less about the note – nice gimmick for Obama. I doubt the school cared in the first place if the girl missed the last day, as long as she was not a habitual skipper. The only concern is that it sets up precendence for parents to ask to get their kids off for anything else outside of the defined excused absences listed in the guidelines – but that is a miniscule nit of a concern.

I do, however, find it completely amusing on this board that the Democrats are screaming about how hateful the Republicans are on any comment the Republicans make that is negative (or even not glowing) on Obama. When these same Democrats spent 8 years denegrating Bush and saying far more hateful things about him – to the point of almost being treasonous in some places. Heck – some of the Dems still can't let it go with Bush.

All of ya'll need to grow up.

Bill in California   June 11th, 2009 3:54 pm ET

WHAT A LEADER, WHAT A MAN, WHAT A PRESIDENT...with one hand he tenderly pats a young girl on the head while simultaneously sticking her with a bill she will be paying on all of her adult life. What irony in a made for movie photo-op!

Tim   June 11th, 2009 3:54 pm ET

We all know there are plenty of "Obama-haters" out there, along with those who regularly overreact to any political stance they disagree with. There has been alot of talk lately about how the President has become a celebrity but isn't proactively doing his job, how he spends too much time on photo ops and not enough time on fixing issues. That's your opinion, and by all means support what you think...

But realistically, for a president to be an effective leader of a large country and a global voice, he has to develop credibility, compassion, and even a certain "celebrity" popularity. Especially in today's world where media has become the gatekeepers to information, cultivating your positive image is an important step for the President in order to garner and weild the sort of power citizens expect him too.

The fact that such a small scale news article as this has generated so much heated debate from people on both sides of the issue is proof that Obama is doing something right. You're never going to have devotion without dislike, but even those of you who are taking shots at Obama are doing it because he has invariably grabbed your attention. Keep that in mind.

Azzaro   June 11th, 2009 3:54 pm ET

If obama does not stop the abuses of, and by the healthcare system by local and state governments, with the totally useless programs set up to manipulate for the political aspect for more funding, there will be no healthcare system left. Unfortunately, the vetrans returning home and the 65 and over crowd are already experiencing the effects of the abuses and it is a ttotal sad state of affairs to not be able to take care of those who have served this country and the country is turning its back on them....

Children understand adult issues better than we assume they do. Whether the girl understood where she was or what was going on, or if she just wanted to see the President, she has something to cherish for a life time. The President only made her day even better.

I can see Canada from my house!   June 11th, 2009 3:52 pm ET

I live in a solidly Republican town. My neighbor, a card-carrying GOPer, has been yanking her kids out of school regularly for travel hockey and soccer. Her policy of "....letting the kids work it out for themselves", as she liked to put it, has borne fruit in the form of her eldest child flunking out of college before his first semester was completed, and her other children being repeatedly on acedmic probation. Putting sports ahead of learning has had this result.: now explain to me how a man taking his child to see the POTUS is some how indicative of bad parenting? This is a huge opportunity for a young person, a potentially life-changing one, and people here see fit to ridicule it? I would not care if it were George W. Bush, Bill Clinton or Barack Obama: don't minimize the moment. She did not go to a spa day, she went to see the POTUS.

By the way, this is newsworthy. With all the bad things in the world, its nice to see our leader in a human light.

Dave in Houston   June 11th, 2009 3:52 pm ET

The coolest president ever!

Ben   June 11th, 2009 3:51 pm ET

Congrats CNN, you actually printed a positive uplifting story. What a lucky little girl!
Oh look here come the Republicans with their pitchforks, ready to be angry with ANYTHING the President does. What a surprise!

Dino   June 11th, 2009 3:50 pm ET

The GOP has already placed the young girl on the terror watch list and deemed the USA as being less safe while she is free to roam the streets.

ATX   June 11th, 2009 3:50 pm ET

Oh no, he pardoned a girl missing the last day of school. Now she won't be able to turn in her homework tomor...no wait.

Susan   June 11th, 2009 3:50 pm ET

Remember this is coming from a proud "right-winger" that can't stand the president, so take this with a grain of salt. What he did was simply a nice gesture. As a teacher, if a child had to chose between my class and seeing the president, I would insist they see the president. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity for her. That said, I don't really see why this was newsworthy.

Librenda   June 11th, 2009 3:50 pm ET

I think it was a great opportunity for this student to see the President in action.
She better hang onto that note and that photo though. It'll be worth alot of $$ to some collector someday!

karuna   June 11th, 2009 3:50 pm ET

Sure, Palin's kids were attending all kinds of events, sled-dog racing etc, and anything else that would place her in the limelight. Wonder why Bristol got into the u-know what? OK, so it was all right for the rightists to drag their kids all over kingdom-come, and an offence for one girl to go see the prez?? No wonder the Palins are fodder for Letterman. So get over it!!

Oh Boy!!!???   June 11th, 2009 3:50 pm ET

TCM – You crack me up!

You rant on partial stories relating to issues you want to believe to be true.

Our Doctors will leave the country. Only a doctor in AMERICA can make the amount they make.

Where other countries have doctors to heal and cure, our doctors get into the business to get rich.

Besides, this is about a cute moment. Not your Turner Classic Movie agenda.

Bea   June 11th, 2009 3:50 pm ET

When Palin had her whole family on the campain – none of the Republicans made a coment not even when they spend all the money for Sarah and the kids – OUR PRESIDENT

Dave   June 11th, 2009 3:50 pm ET

Wow... some of the Republicans are even finding fault with Obama for showing kindness to a child! They better slow down a bit if they want to maintain any sembalance of credibility, because Obama's got at least three and a half years to go, and probably will get a second term.

Wait a minute... Republicans, credibility? Forget it, they blew that when they gave Bush a second term.

Jerry American   June 11th, 2009 3:49 pm ET

The moral of the story is that this young girl has been saddled in debt by this president. Now the real meat of the story is do we really want the same people (dems and repubs) who are mismanaging medicare and social security in charge of all health care? Would guess probably not

It's really like Napoleon-syndrome for those 50 people...

What a nice/funny gesture though by Obama..now, can we get back to how the country is going bankrupt, CNN?

This is so wonderful That young person will remember. Obama is for all people dont you get it? I am for all people. I pray for them everyday. Yes, gotta love him.

I can hear his voice now. See what is going on is that many of you cant get in reality that there is a man in office who cares. Who is real. down to earth.

Like he said that other week: What would you actually like me to give up (responding to folk saying he is doing too much, too much on his plate).

Yes he is kool. We love you Obama.

For all you negative people out here, GET A LIFE. You conservatives show your hate for this country every time you open month. A once in a life time thing for a child and you bigots still have something negative to say about it. It just comes to show you conservatives HATE anything that has happiness to it, PERIOD. You people HATE to see people happy, you hate to see people helping one another, you hate to hear about people saying good things about one another, just anything that's good you conservatives HATE. If it doesn't have DEATH, DESTRUCTION, GREED, taking over someone else land or denying people their rights, you conservatives HATE it. In my opinion you people are nothing more than the evil man himself (((( THE DEVIL ))))m PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you want to criticize the President, at least do it on issues of substance.

Take your hate somewhere else please.

Brandon   June 11th, 2009 3:43 pm ET

This is funny. Not all news has to be about death and distruction. Sometimes it can be something small and humorous. It's worth a blurb and nothing more. People that are having a problem with it, get a life.

Robert Jury   June 11th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

I'm a Repub and I think is great that the little girl was with her father on the last day of school getting to me the Pres. How soon we forget about the car load of kids in the news last week, who skipped school roll over and killed 4 or 5.

RUForReal   June 11th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

My husband and I are both educators, and we have taken our son (also 10) out of school to travel to Washington, DC and abroad because we considered those trips to be educational opportunities. We would take him out of school in a minute for a chance to see the president - let alone get a signed note from him!

The knee-jerk negativity from conservatives is boring. Next!

M Clayton   June 11th, 2009 3:41 pm ET

This is not news as far as I'm concerned. Sarah Palin appears to be desperate to stay in the public eye. Her views and comments do not represent the majority of Americans. I have no interest in her opinions and will celebrate the moment when we can go a month and not hear her name. She is irrelevant.

Does anyone on here even know what the President is doing? Do you realize how much debt we are going to be in soon? What happens when nations such as China, Russia, etc stop buying our debt? We are racking up billions of dollars more in debt every single day and our first thought is to include socialized healthcare? Makes perfectly good sense to me (sarcastic). I am neither republican nor democrat, completely independent but you give this one year and I can promise that you will be wishing there was someone else in office. There can not be democrats or republicans leading this nation, it needs to be bipartisan to complete the checks and balances that are needed. We have an ignorant nation that thinks money can be generated out of thin air (much like the USSR back in the 1980s) and handed out to banks and companies that dug themselves into their own debt. Be a responsible citizen, read the Constitution, read the Bill of Rights, and think to yourself if we as a country are upholding any of the policies we held as the nation we started out as.

I get sick of his own expensive spending; I get sick of his ADMIN. wasteful spendings.

He and the MSM thinks we are fools, ah? I got so many letters and emails from the DNC and the key figures of the democrate party asking me for annual donation. I told them I got sick of the one-sided MSM and got sick of his arrogance and his wasteful and uncontrolled spending.

When I was about 15 years old, my parents took me and my brother to a speech that President Kennedy gave at Madison Square Garden in NYC. I didn't understand a lot of what he was saying in the speech, but the memory of sitting in that huge audience listening to the President of the United States is something that has stayed with me my whole life. I am now 63 going on 64.

I applaud that father for taking his daughter to see and listen to the President. And good for the President for light-heartedly writing her a note for school.

Lighten up right-wingers. Members of the Party of No are just digging themselves a deeper whole by opposing EVERYTHING our President does.

Shirley, seriously?? As far as I am concerned more parents should take their kids out of school to go listen to the president and other members of our government speak more often...that is half the problem with our country...everyone wants to have an opinion but they don't get involved by going to town hall meetings, volunteering etc. If you don't think empowering children to be involved from an early age can make a huge difference in the direction of our country you are sadly mistaken. And what do you really think she was missing on the last day of school? A pizza party? My children missed their last day of school to attend an Obama rally and it sparked a fire in them to be a part of the campaign. At 9 and 12 they know more about their government and the issues that our country is facing than most grown adults!!! You think they are teaching that in schools?

Because postings are closed on the Holocaust Museum murder...

All you liberals, with foam flecks flying in your comments, did you know that the kook who shot the guard hated the GOP, believed in 9/11 conspiracies and hated Jews? He is way, way more like Rev. Wright than Rush or Hannity or any of the other conservatives you guys are bashing.

The problem with discourse in this country today is that people who do not know what they are talking about keep talking...and people who aren't smart enough to question EVERY accusation made in the blogosphere believe EVERYthing they read that they WISH was true.

To James who wrote:

Are you sick of something the media covers about what President Obama did, or the fact that President Obama listens to the people and tries to be accomodating to all?

In my opinion Susan said it best when she wrote:
"wow..

Matt G   June 11th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

BK   June 11th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

Barack Obama knows how to stoke a crowd, or a country, into seeing him as likable. Even the naysayers have to admit he's better at it than most anyone in the Republican party, even if a few of them are finally showing promise.

A   June 11th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

I find this pretty cool personally. He took a moment to brighten the day of a child. That is a good thing. It shows that even our leaders are human.

To those screaming about her missing school being awful. How much will a 10 year old miss on the last day of school? Most 4th grades (which is what I would be willing to guess she was in) classes screw around on the last day. Water balloon fights and goofing off. She probably learned far more going to that meeting than she would have learned at school talking about her summer plans to her friends.

To those screaming that the issues were "too adult" for her, how do you know? My 10 year old son has a better understanding of politics than many adults I know. 10 year olds are more intelligent than most people give them credit for.

Perhaps this young lady WANTED to go. It's not every day that most kids gets to see the president in person.

Tiaunia   June 11th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

Most kids on the last day of school are released within a few hours, if that, lighten up already.

Cry if he excused her for missing a state exam just to listen to him speak.

A Mom of 4   June 11th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

I think it's great. If any President was going to be in my town, you bet I would take my kids ouf of school to see him/her. It's a lesson in goverment. It's important that kids take notice so when they are old enough, they continue to pay attention and can make informed decisions when it comes time to vote.

I think it's great that President Obama wrote the note. I think it is a cute gesture to a little girl who came to see him and learn more about what is going on in the world.

Expat American   June 11th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

I must say, that was a pretty genuine moment between the President and the girl.

To the Rhoades Scholar exclaiming 'Hitler Youth'......Who urinated in your cheerios this morning? Is this the reason for the sour taste in your mouth? It sounds like your issue is with that person and not the President of the United States.

May God bless you as you try to fill your heart with love....bisous!

Anna   June 11th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

The girl should have still been in school, but I thought Obama's handling of her absence was handled in good taste. Here's hoping she has a future as an honest politician!

He is not good at governing but he is very skillful and cunning in playing the game of politics. Too bad not many people see through him.

I am a long time DEM and I am a moderate liberal supporting pro-choice policiies. But he is definitely not my choice. I believe the MSM and the pro-Obama media pushed him there.

I don't think he is a uniter, he is a devider, a very cunning divider.

Chris   June 11th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

Just more proof that he's an Islamofascist: a clever plot to lower education standards one truant child at a time.

Harley   June 11th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

TCM   June 11th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

awww...how cute! Now, on to Obama screwing the country over with this health care agenda.....the government can't run a thing without fouling it up...what makes America think this total greenhorn can fix it? Sure health care costs are high, but start screwing the the system in a hurried, reckless, obama-like manner, and you'll send the best doctors running to other countries....so, hopefully the system can changed minimally, and without any obama socialism injected.

Shari, NY   June 11th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

If someone plays hookey to hang out in the mall, party or get into trouble that's one matter. This girl's father took her out of school to get a first hand lesson in Civics/Social Studies. I think that's OK. Who knows? The man might have asked for her to be excused before pulling her out. The President just saved him the trouble of putting pen to paper. This is not much of an issue.

The Unshrub   June 11th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

Shirley In California Now On The Fence Re Obama, you said:

"The father is the one who should be reprimanded. Why would he take his young daughter out of school to listen to adult issues? Obama is not her father he is her president. Any pardons should be left to the parents or did he now feel he had enough authority?"

You have to be kidding? Maybe it was too complicated for you at that age, but many kids now-a-day are a little more sophisticated. Or maybe you just wanted to find fault with something about Obama since you didn’t vote for him. I do know one thing. Obama has made a Democrat for life with that girl and that is what bothers most republicans.

Delia   June 11th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

nice general interest story. Come on people so what if it doesn't seem like news. People like to feel connected to what the president is doing and it is good to know he is out there still talking to the people and taking an interest.

Connie   June 11th, 2009 3:21 pm ET

Poor Harley, I'm sorry you can't just enjoy the fact that we have a classy, intelligent and smart Prez who just saw a chance to make the day special for the little girl. And I wouldn't confuse admiration for worship.

Cruzan Obama Mama   June 11th, 2009 3:21 pm ET

How can you people bash this? How could you possibly find it in you to say something mean-spirited about this? Is the requirement to be a Repub now to be arrogant, snarky, bitter, & selfish. That is all the party stands for now in my eyes. GROW UP!!!!

It is the last day of school. We all know that the teachers are just as excited as the students for the school year to be over. Heck my daughter's school has made her last day of school a 1/2 day, with early dismissal. This student had the chance to meet the POTUS or go to the last day of school where she would probably have nothing to do. Some of you are saying photo-op or truancy....for goodness sake are you serious? Her parents thought she would be better served to see the President, how could that be wrong? If McCain won (THANK THE GOOD LORD HE DIDN'T) would you be saying the same thing? You bitter Repubs are ridiculous!!!!

MJJofSara   June 11th, 2009 3:21 pm ET

This episode was so totally delightful. thanks POTUS.
you are a true person.
Now, hopefully, you have a plan to get around the board re:
the future of this country.
People will get out into the streets soon re: Health Care Public option. can't wait. just wish I were young and could still do that.

Awww, c'mon! Some of you are just haters looking for an excuse to diss Obama.

Parents take their kids out of school for stuff sometimes, and it is their right to do so. I would take my kid out of school for a chance to see the President close up. Now this girl is going to have a great story to tell for the rest of her life, which is exactly why her father brought her along (though he probably didn't know how good of a story it would be!)

As for Obama writing the note – OMG, people, are you seriously saying he thinks he's god because of this? If you're the President and you know you have the power to take two seconds to do something funny like this, blow a few people's minds, and make a kid's day, why wouldn't you?

Kudos to the Dad for bringing it up in such a non-chalant way, and a HUGE FIST BUMP to Obama for showing his personality, sense of humor, and humility in such a sweet way to this little girl.

Thank you Mr President for taking time to teach a young girl that she is important!!! One missed day of school will never have the impact that you taking time for her one on one will do.

To all of you complaining about "oh no missing a day of school", you should learn by example and realize that not all of life lessons are taught in the classroom.

Danny E. Gonzalez   June 11th, 2009 3:12 pm ET

Very Cute; this is nice because it shows that this president wants to identify with everyone in the country. the fact is that the father probably thought it would be very exciting for his girl to see the president. it is also the last day of school so I don't see the harm, besides the extraordinary value the note posesses. if President Bush had done the same (which I believe he did) I would feel the same way... this is a good positive story...

That's like putting COngress on a diet and saying they cannot eat bread for dinner, and then the White House going off and eats cake, ice cream, candy, pizza, and everything else fattening.

She should have stayed in school, she's too young to understand any of this or the impact. That age through 25 they think everything is free and provided by someone else.
