The Rev. Jeremiah Wright is looking to calm this week's firestorm over remarks termed anti-Semitic by critics.

(CNN) – The Rev. Jeremiah Wright is looking to calm this week's firestorm over remarks termed anti-Semitic by critics, saying Thursday he meant to say "Zionists" instead of "them Jews" when referring to people in Washington who do not want President Obama speaking with him.

"Let me say, like Hillary, I misspoke. Let me just say 'Zionists,'" Wright told SIRIUS radio host Mark Thompson.

Earlier this week, the former Chicago pastor told Virginia newspaper The Daily Press he no longer speaks with Obama - a former congregant of his Trinity United Church - because "Them Jews aren't going to let him talk to me."

"I'm not talking about all Jews, all people of the Jewish faith, I'm talking about Zionists," Wright said Thursday, adding that his comments were in reference to "historical facts."

"I'm not talking about emotionally charged words or the fact that like Jimmy Carter's book, that because he used the word that Jews use, 'apartheid,' he gets labeled anti-Semitic."

"They can jump on that one phrase if they want to, but they can't undo history and the facts of Jewish historians and Jewish theologians who write about what's going on, who write about the enormous influence that AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) has on our government and on United States policy and the United Nations."

The White House declined to comment on Wright's original remarks this week.

Needless to say , I'm outraged by this man's anti-semitic comments. However what troubles even more, is that Re. Wright was President Obama's pastor for 20 years until pressure from Obama's surrogates forced him to distance himself from his Rev. during the primary. Questions about the president's spirtual background surfaced during his run for the presidency and I wouldn't be surprised if they start being heard again. His apparent wish washy commitment to Israel might be explained by his former pastor's repugnant remarks.

denverdoc   June 11th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

At least Obama and the Dems have the sense to divorce themselves from this guy. Wright is nothing more than a inner city reverse racist blowhard.

Had it been the Republicans, he would be the leader of the party a la Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Pat Robertson, Pastor Hagee and their loathesome ilk.

Tommy Ingram Jr.   June 11th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

Rev. Wright is wrong again. As a man of God and which I can only believe he is, I would ask that he respect the president and not allow reporters to make him look bad to the public. Rev. Wright is making himself to be used by the devil. Everything that he says is not right. It seems to me that Rev. Wright or should I say wrong is being a little childish. I wouldn't want to be a member of his church. Men don't control other men. You are a man the President is a man. You can't be the president but anyone can be a Pastor these days. Are you really a Pastor or a man with an attitude of jealousy toward the president Mr. Obama. You were not saying these things about President Bush, or Clinton. Please do your job at your church and leave the President alone. Grow up Rev. Wright we are sick of your crying. You are embarrassing yourself, Black people, and your ministry. Thank You Tommy Ingram

Tatianna   June 11th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

As long as Wrights preaching was to the choir, he was fine. But soon as the magnifying glass of the real world hits his racist/radical/anti-America and anti-Semitic hate rants, he became untentable. Obama is no different. This election, I predict, will stand as the most perfect example of political jujitsu ever enacted. An entire Nation choked on its own liberal-racisim petard and doesnt even have the courage to admit it. We have become a Nation of fools and Obama is our just dessert!

Jew that didn't vote for Obama   June 11th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

I'm actually really at a loss here. What does connect Obama and Wright and Rham Emmanuel? What kind of profit a man that spent 20 year listening to Wright now does take from that Jew? An I wonder what other Jews were thinking when voted for Obama?

m smith   June 11th, 2009 9:53 pm ET

The ol Rev should just shut up. He will be a thorn in our presidents side for a long time to come.

krejaton   June 11th, 2009 9:52 pm ET

The only thing more frightening than this man and his hate are those who partake and espouse it.

So how long was our president sitting in his pews?

AmFem   June 11th, 2009 9:46 pm ET

The good reverend is sounding like he's in the beginning stages of dementia. How could he not realize the backlash he will get from the stupid things he says?

Steve, Columbia SC June 11th, 2009 5:49 pm ET

As I said yesterday, this man is NO pastor of the Christian faith I know of. His remarks regarding Jews is not racist, it is hate speech.

Maybe Congress will enact hate legislation protecting Jews now, just like the sexual orientation protection legislation………….all this protection legislation makes me want to puke………our laws used to protect everyone just fine until the demoncrats got involved.
------------------------------
Well Steve, then you should feel more at ease living in Columbia, SC as the U.S. government hasn't passed any of this sexual orientation protection legislation that you speak of. Many people have fought and are still fighting for it with the federal government, but they actually haven't passed anything. They are leaving that topic up to the states.

Proud American   June 11th, 2009 9:36 pm ET

Why do major news networks continue to post comments made by Idiots, like Wright, Palin? Both are complete Moron's and would say and do anything to get some press..

Proud DHS radical   June 11th, 2009 9:33 pm ET

I love seeing the Obama apologists try to spin this one.

Alan   June 11th, 2009 9:29 pm ET

Oh. I see. It isn't "them Jews" that are keeping Obama from talking to Rev. Wright, it is "the Zionists."

And they are doing this, how?

Glenn   June 11th, 2009 9:29 pm ET

The only thing of truth out of his mouth is that Zioists control the Federal Reserve, and they carefully engineer financial cycles of boom and bust to cause foreclosures so the wealthy foreigners and bankers can take a few of the chips off the table each time. No offense, but you're just a Pawn to these people.

Jack Lowe   June 11th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

I hope Mr. Wright isn't really attempting to place himself in the same class as Jimmie Carter. Wright you're not only wrong – you're a mediocre hack, while Carter is a true Christian.

Do you get it? You can't tell a tree by the cloth it wears. You have to look at it's fruit. A good tree will have good fruit, and a bad tree...bad.

Carter didn't retire to the golf course, or sit on his can in some pulpit grousing about inequality. You could learn a lot from him. Second thought: probably not. You lack wisdom, humility, and dignity.

Tom L   June 11th, 2009 9:25 pm ET

It is so dishonest to compare Rush Limbaugh to Rev. Wright. It's just not even close to the same thing. Those on the left might hate Limbaugh and that is fine. But to compare him to Rev. Wright shows how partisan and biased you are. Limbaugh has absolutely nothing to do with Wright.

ib   June 11th, 2009 9:17 pm ET

Left wingers are so blind to what is going on that they actually think Obama is doing the right thing and going to save this world. How dumb can you get? People get your head out of Obama's butt long enough to really look at what he is doing to this country. I would be saying this no matter what party Obama was with when he was elected. People wake up while there is still time to save this country.

Neilz   June 11th, 2009 9:11 pm ET

Why is it the only religious leaders we see in the news are Wright and McKissic? Because all the other religious leaders are busy lobbying Congress to defeat the proposed Hate Crimes Bill that seeks to prevent this type of thing from happening again.
Kind of hard to speak against hate crime while trying to protect hate crime.
Oh! But that's just for the clergy!
Wright should take a look at who surrounds Obama It's not Jews. It's Catholics, that is, when they're not trying to protect hate crime.
Oh! But that's just for the clergy!
Right.

John from California   June 11th, 2009 8:57 pm ET

Reverent, Open mouth insert foot! Enough Said!

Hotdog   June 11th, 2009 8:55 pm ET

I think it is inappropriate a member of the clergy to talk like that. Rev. Wright likes to be in the lime light.

KTX   June 11th, 2009 8:53 pm ET

Well, now we know where Obama got the inspiration for his self-aggrandizing "address to the Muslim people." The mainstream media will not connect the dots on this. . .right after Obama travels around the Middle East throwing Israel under the bus, his pastor goes on this nonsensical tirade. No doubt Obama shares this disgust for the "Zionists."

What a joke. Never thought I'd say this, but I'm actually beginning to miss Bush. . .

Harley   June 11th, 2009 8:51 pm ET

These ZIONISTS KILLED 34 and wounded 174 U.S.NAVY Sailor and 95 percent of Americans still don't know about the ATTACK.. REMEMBER the LIBERTY!!!!

Jake   June 11th, 2009 8:28 pm ET

To the idiot here who just suggested that you "do not hang out with someone for 20 plus years without sharing their views," I refer you to James Carville and his wife, or just about any pro-choice Catholic who's attended the same church for 20 years.

Obama never worked with Wright on any issue pertaining to foreign policy, let alone Israel, and Obama has an entirely different background, world view, and a clearly different record than Rev. Wright on these issues.

Rev. Wright needs to go back into his small minded world and keep
his thoughts to him self. He was quiet for some time, and the whole
World was thankful, now he is back spreading hate and harsh words
about people different than him slef, sound familiar Rev. Wright, two
wrongs don't make a Wright, Rev. or not.

How can people who voted for Obama not see that common beliefs between them IF Obama attended his church for 2 decades. Wright's hateful spew was filmed with the Obama's sitting in a pew listening to his garbage. How can anyone think they have no common agenda? Obama distanced hiself from this man to achieve their common goal. Any person who disagreed with his garbage would have left the congregation! Wright and Obama scare me.

Mike in NYC   June 11th, 2009 7:47 pm ET

Good times, good times!

I didn't care for his anti-White lines, but at least he's a straight shooter.

Time for everyone else to be honest, now!

Liberal Whites - admit you hate your own people, and that you would never think of living anywhere near the non-Whites you profess to champion.

GOP Whites - admit you love Israel more than your own people, and that being seen as "racists" scares you more than anything else.

Now, don't you feel better?

Dan, TX   June 11th, 2009 7:45 pm ET

This is the picture thast resembles of our President. He is a messiah and Rev. Wright and Barack are the birds of the same feather. Imagine we have such a classic president of our country. I wonder how he could reach the top with such radical association and now he behaves as if he is a saint, a messiah. Newsweek reporter called him GOD.

conservative/liberal   June 11th, 2009 7:44 pm ET

Not even everyone in Israel is a Zionist, and certainly not all Jewish people in the U.S. are Zionist. So Reverend Wrong is correct in one thing–distinguishing between "Jews" and "Zionists" but I don't think many understand the distinction.
I'd just as soon he crawled back under his rock, but we have free speech in this country.

Robert   June 11th, 2009 7:44 pm ET

Rev. Wright is absolutely correct...If you actually know anything about the powers in Washington (jews & AIPAC) you would agree with him as well. Jews have power that even amazes CIA!

Negativity is the order of the day with some in the media, especially when it relates to the President.......Mr. Wright should drop his title (Rev), and go on a 'jealousy/haters' tour' with Cheney, Gingrich, and Limbaugh......In addition, CNN needs to stop reporting this story.....It's in poor taste, considering what happened yesterday in DC.....

LacrosseMom   June 11th, 2009 7:16 pm ET

@ Steve (the real one).... Your angry comment to me speaks volumes. Seriously, like I told "Chris" Wright is not a politician, he is a nut case.

However, I should mention that Wright, Limbaugh, Hannity all have the Freedom of Speech, we can disagree with them, but they do have the Freedom to spew hate and lies....... or craziness.

Steve, Palin, Newt, etc., are politicians, its different. I do complain about CNN covering Palin, she is a big drama queen. We have more newsworthy stories to discuss. Peace be with you!

Yocheved K   June 11th, 2009 7:15 pm ET

Let's be perfectly clear, Jews and Zionist are one and the same: if an antisemitic person say he/she is anti Zionist it means the same thing as anti Jewish. A bigot can be white or black. Unfortunately, nothing ever changes, hate is hate.

For all you people out here who think Rev. Wright is a left wing nut, NO he is not. Rev Wright just speaks the true about this country which he has all the right too. That's the problem with this country and white America, when ever some one of color speak up about all the racist things that go on in this country, he's Anti-American or he's a racist, PLEASE. Yes racism is here and yes white people discriminate against people of color. Until we admit that we live in a racist country and stop trying to act as if it doesn't excess, we'll never have peace in this country. So speak your mind Rev. Why is this important? See for yourself:
"Barack Husein Obhama"

How many numbers in each name? Let's see... there's 6 in the first; 6 in the middle, and 6 in the last name.

I guess I'd change my name too if they spelled out those numbers.

I do not see any important in Rev. Wright talking point this time again, but i do see is a lamentation, by Dr. Wright that President Obama whom he nurtured had abandoned not just his/their church. Rev. Jeremial Wright want to link himself to the president but his acts last year had stained a relationsip they have built over the years.Commom people, Jeremiah is human too. But for the Jews, i think what he sees as the barrier between him and the president is what he call the ZIONIST, but he alsoput it in a better perpectives what he meant. Funny how this Rev Wright story is not part on any on-air discussion(s) on CNN or MSNBC of Hate Groups or Hate Speech. Amazing huh (?)

the rector   June 11th, 2009 7:03 pm ET

Everyone is racist. It's a simple fact that deep down people are hard wired to distrust and suspect those who are not like them. Anyone who denies this fact is lying to themselves. That said we can still coexist in a peaceful if not totaly honest way. The problem is most people are afraid of being seen as they truly are, helpless and scared. The only thing this guy did wrong was to back track and try to smooth over the issue. That made him look cowardly, I mean whats the point he is already a known racist and hate monger. So why pull punches now? And yes "them jews" are racist too, just like you and me. Live with it.

Bob Whitford   June 11th, 2009 7:01 pm ET

I happen to be Jewish, and I'm a Zionist and yet I generally support Rev Wright and his viewpoints. And no, except for the right wing Likudniks and their imperialistic ilk, I'd say Jeremiah Wright has nothing to worry about in speaking to the President.

Zionism does not equate automatically to the extreme right views of the Likud in Israel. I would hope the Rev Wright would come to that realization.

Michelle Bell from Alabama   June 11th, 2009 6:58 pm ET

It is possible that Obama wa not present when Rev Wright had his sermon that has been all over youtube and the media; hoever, a man like the Rev Wright, a hate monger, does not throw this time of venom out every once-in-awhile, it is what drives his sermons.

Convenient for a politician to have been absent every time over a 20 year span where this Rev spewed his hate...

Afterall, ignorance is bliss, right?

Thank you Rev. Wright for reminding us that anti-Semitism today has masked itself behind the complexities of the Mid-East conflict. An anti-Semite, such as Rev. Wright need only replace the word Jew with Zionist and all of the sudden his words are acceptable to society. Historically, anti-Semitism has taken many forms: socialist, facist, capitalist, tribal, religious, political, democratic, liberal, monorachist, tyrannical...Let us be clear: WE REJECT ANTI-SEMITISM IN ALL ITS FORMS (including the present anti-Zionist form)

the rector   June 11th, 2009 6:40 pm ET

Man I love this guy! He just doesn't know when to shut up, and that's great! And since pretty much every jew on the planet feels they have the right to be in isreal and treat the arabs like animals, they are very nearly all zionists. So in retrospect the good rev. is probably right, no pun intended.

Walter   June 11th, 2009 6:40 pm ET

People who aren't under the spell of our pathetic political parties can see that the media and general public is treating Obama exactly the same way they treated Bush when he was first elected. He's infallible, isn't challenged by the media, isn't checked by Congress, is adored by his blindly devoted minions, etc...

Both sides of the political spectrum have turned their scumbag politicians into celebrities and demigods. It proves that even though the left and right are always at each other's throats, they are ultimately the same worthless pile. Adolf Hitler and his former ally, Jozef Stalin, were perfect examples of this phenomenon. Their governments supposedly stood on opposite ends of the spectrum yet their beliefs, policies, actions and results were remarkably similar. The right-wing sheep were spoon fed their gruel for the last 8 years so now its time for the left-wing zombies to get their fill of the sludge.

Wrights like crazy old uncle everyone has in their family. He says a bunch of crazy things and you kind of ignore him and tell to go out to the garage and fix something. And you never let him be present when company is there. You give him some movie money and send on his way.

Wright is just a crazy old guy.

So this is the guy that inspired and taught Obama huh. Wow you libs just overlook character everytime.

20 years Barack sat in this guys church, every other week he said and got tapes of sermon when he missed them. But no Barry never heard any of this. Right.

Don't forget Barry only distanced himself from Reverend Wright because he looked bad hanging out with him. Not that he does not believe the same as Wright anymore.

Based on his policies so far they tow the same line only every lib in America is an apologist for Barack when it gets called out.

What is a difference between them JEWS and them HEBREWS

More than you can imagine.

The land of Canaan, today’s Israel, wasn't promised to the JEWS as in inheritance, but to the HEBREWS

The Jews systematically wiped out the Hebrews over time and the Jews are the ones who write our history.

Illinoistom   June 11th, 2009 6:10 pm ET

He means the President is controlled by Zionists? I'm sure glad Dear Leader sat in his pews for 20 years. Real comforting.

Wright might not have worded it in the greatest of ways (he needs to remember its okay to hate Palestenians in this country, but not Jewish folk). I do agree that Obama has been a disappointment though. He's letting conservatives, who only want to take this country back to the stone age (socially at least), dictate his policies. Obama needs to show more of a backbone, even to the spineless Democrats in Congress who have already made it their life's work to cower to the bigots who want to ruin this country.

Billy Graham: Graham agreed with Nixon that Jews control the American media, calling it a "stranglehold" during a 1972 conversation with Nixon.

Ann Coulter: "Jews need to be perfected."

Rush Limbaugh: "Elie Wiesel gets up there and he does his thing but it's 65 years here or close to it…He’s up there and he’s ripping Germany for what it did 60 or 65 years ago, blah, blah, blah, blah."

Pat Buchanan: Referred to Capitol Hill as "Israeli-occupied territory."

More Buchanan: Challenged the historical record that thousands of Jews were gassed to death by diesel exhaust at Treblinka: "Diesel engines do not emit enough carbon monoxide to kill anybody."

Jerry Falwell: "I know a few of you here today don't like Jews.
And I know why. He can make more money accidentally

If any other candidate had attended a hate church we would not be splitting hairs over how often he attended!

News about Wright and Palin are only propagated through large news networks for ratings, which translates into money. They are not news worthy, but do excite the narrow minded.

What about the important news.. This is what we should be focused on. Quoting...

"Analysts highlight steps the new administration has already taken to ease tensions with Muslims. For example, they are proposing talks with Iran and Syria — rather than confrontation — which makes it harder for Hezbollah and other extremists to demonize the U.S."

What Obama is doing could save this world, and people are listening to Palin, Wright, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Glenn Beck. These people are going to lead to the destruction of America.

I suppose, Chris, that it is just like the far-right who claims to be Christian, just posts such vile comments on these and other blogs; and who listen to hate-mongers like Hannity and Limbaugh, Coulter and others..... and then go to church on Sunday as if they were wonderful people! Looking down on others who do not share their beliefs nor point of view.

You see, Chris, President Obama may not have been present when Wright was been hateful; there is a very good possibility that Obama did not attend church every single Sunday, which most of us, regulaer people don't do either.

Be careful, Chris, not to judge and condemn Obama simply because you do not like him.

Steve, Columbia SC   June 11th, 2009 5:49 pm ET

As I said yesterday, this man is NO pastor of the Christian faith I know of. His remarks regarding Jews is not racist, it is hate speech.

Maybe Congress will enact hate legislation protecting Jews now, just like the sexual orientation protection legislation.............all this protection legislation makes me want to puke.........our laws used to protect everyone just fine until the demoncrats got involved.

"To avoid being mistaken for a sellout, I chose my friends carefully. The more politically active black students. The foreign students. The Chicanos. THE MARXIST PROFESSORS AND STRUCTURAL FEMINISTS."

How wonderfully untrue. I don't see any Dems/libs here doing anything but acknowledging that what he said is compeltely asinine, harmful and dangerous...and overwhelmingly condemning him for it. If you'd really like to make the comparison stick, then I'd suggest that next time Rush opens his fat, irrational, mendacious yapper, all the GOPers should come to the Commentary sections here and condemn him for what he said...you know, rather than repeating him verbatim. THEN you could make the comparison, because both would be condemning loudmouthed idiots in their party. As of now, however, the GOP fully embraces and internalizes Rush's bombastic drivel.

President Obama sat under the Rev. Wright for 20 years probably for the same reasons many whites sit under their preachers who spew hate and intolerance about other people and groups. Its moreso the pot calling the kettle black. I'm white and I cant tell you how many times I heard pastors preach against inter racial marraige and inter mingling....on top of other issue and groups ( includes Muslims, Jews, etc). This sort of stuff exists in alot of churches, and they continue to hold sizeable congregations. I will say however, I do not agree with any intolerance being preached over the pulpit, and on the same token, I dont agree nor practice what alot of what over the pulpit in those regards. Do I believe that President Obama believes everything that Wright preaches? I do not think so. This however, should force us all to look and ask are we guilty of the same thing we are acusing Wright of....as well as take a look at our associations. I stayed in my church because I had convictions that superceded what was being taught at times. Perhaps this was the case with President Obama whenever he attended.

Joanna   June 11th, 2009 5:25 pm ET

The man is utterly tactless. He could have said "handlers" and everyone would have understood perfectly and most would also have recognized his bitterness at having lost any influence he might have once had.

Its hard to believe anyone ever took this man seriously. I'm guessing he didn't used to be so looney, and that he performs his regular duties as a Reverend in a more conventional fashion. But more interesting is the support he gets from many of the folks posting comments here. I guess we should all be happy that a Jew-hating black and Jew-hating whites have found their common ground. But whatever happened to Love thy neighbor as thyself?

Lori from MO   June 11th, 2009 5:24 pm ET

i am a liberal. i voted for Obama & would vote for him again. That said, stop giving Rev Wright coverage! He is obviously feeble & insane & is just trying to incite people. Shame on him but shame on you for giving him a national platform. He is a racist & just because he's black doesn't mean he's any less of a racist than a white man.

For those of you slamming Obama for going to this guy's church, look in the mirror. Almost all of the boomer gen & prior was raised w/ separation a mainstay. You have people in your family that have racist viewpoints & you love them anyway & ignore the bad parts. Unless of course they go public with their ridiculous views, then no matter how much you love them, you must disown them. Exactly what Obama did.

Ann Coulter says that "Jews just need to be perfected" and she is invited to speak at conservative meetings all of the time. Why is the Rev. The only shocker here is that Rev. Wright tried to backpedal on his remarks. He's a racist and a social pyromaniac.

Of course, if the situation was reversed – if a prominent Jewish rabbi/cantor made a similar remark about "them black people" not only would the press be jumping down his/her throat, but also every Jewish organization in the US would issue an apology and move to defrock the person.

I feel sorry for the children in his congregation who are being raised with these hateful messages.

How does criticizing Zionism translate into being a racist or being anti-semite? Hasn't anyone noticed that anyone who says ANYTHING negative about Israel or Zionism automatically gets LABELED a bigot or a nut job? Does someone who say something negative about Chinese domestic or foreign policy automatically get labeled a bigot or racist? Of course not. So why are people so quick to label those who criticize Zionism? Indeed, there are plenty of Jews who are critical of Zionism. Does AIPAC even control our ability to think and speak for ourselves?

Tanya Jones   June 11th, 2009 5:11 pm ET

Why did it take 20 years for Obama, who sat in Rev. Wright's church,
to wake up one day and walk away? It was because out of necessity in order for Obama to win the election. There are many fine & decent black churches in Illinois that he could have attended in order to stay "connected" to the black community. Obama's excuses for attending this church does not wash. Where was his judgement as well as his wife Michelle's judgement when she referred to caucasions as "whiteys," a negative racial prior to the election? I suppose our now "first lady" lawyer learned a lot while attending Wright's church. Get Real Folks! I did not care for McCain either but these people are NOT the solution to the problems facing the U.S.

Not even the Jews who have suffered for their beliefs as much as, if not more than, any people in human history. Zealots are zealots. But until we learn to seperate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak, the US will not be successful in brokering any kind of substantial peace in the middle east.

The Rev. J. Wright needs not to speak another word, not retract his rhetortic... Go back to Chicago... Pray to a Heathen god.... Pray for someone to bless you with some smarts, because after you said what you said, someone tried to destroy a part of History that the extreme right-wing lunatics who claims that it never happened...

CNN want to put this crazy pastor in the sportlight so one RIGHT WING NUT CASE will exercise his supposed 2nd amendment right by going postal on him – we have had too many nut cases already this last couple weeks!!!!

....CNN, dont follow the footsteps of Bill O'reilly, Sean Hannity & Rush Limbaugh who are calling the RIGHT WING NUTS TO ARMS and chanting GD* OBAMA and let the USA fail!!!!!

B.W. Harris   June 11th, 2009 5:04 pm ET

Wright's comment leaves me completely mind boggled. What could he even mean by it? Perhaps he is making a reference to Obama's position in having to being an ultimate ambassador to Israel? Perhaps Wright knows that his extreme takes on thing can not dictate Obama's decisions while in office.

Obama is a versatile and compassionate person, which he how he differs in from Wright. Keep in mind that Obama has grown up in diversity when it comes to culture and that Wright is undoubtedly not the only influence on Obama. The President at the end of the day is his own man and not a robot of some preacher. If he wasn't fit for the job of President and was just another part of the choir that Wright preaches to then he would still be sitting there in Chicago chanting "amen'! Followers don't get elected, leaders do.

Anti-semantics really confuse me. I have not met more than a handful of Jewish people where I live (TN), and every one I have met was a nice as can be. Whether it be a comment from Rev. Wright or an assault from Von Brunn the hate is completely beyond my understanding.

The problem with those that like to say "see the dems have idiots too" don't seem to realize the difference between Wright and Limbaugh/Newt

Wright has no power within democratic political circles. Limbaugh, obviously does, as countless republicans change their views/backpedal after being called out by Limbaugh. Newt, of course, served for the republican party

That being said, Limbaugh and Wright should no longer be in the "ticker." Obviously CNN just wants to stir things up, get more hits. People like these idiots don't deserve the recognition CNN gives them. It is no wonder that news agencies are dying, they don't report news anymore. They all are turning into entertainment rags. I'm about done with CNN.

Allen   June 11th, 2009 5:00 pm ET

It still amazes me that even after years, you can find out you really don't know someone. How many of us have know someone for years only to find out something about them that you would have never thought could be true...especially when it comes to racism. This story is especially sad as it comes after the attack at the Holocaust Museum…it goes to show that that racism still exists, even in places you would never think it could be.

Jean 2   June 11th, 2009 5:00 pm ET

Some one always manage to find the "Bottom Dwellers" to quote and that quote drives the news coverage of the day.
The real pity is that we are limited by this kind of journalism that only adds fuel to the simmering hate that exist just beneath the surface of our somewhat peaceful society.
The question is, "How much will we as citizens of America have to pay before those with the microphones ( reporters, consultants and pundits) take the responsibility of their professions?

I can see Canada from my house!   June 11th, 2009 4:59 pm ET

The thread with all of these political sideshow people, like Wright, Ayers, Limbaugh, Hannity, etc, is that they are all, in the words of Dr. House, morons.

Lets find something a little more uplifting than watching yet another depraved person with a microphone or a gun cheapen our society.

He is a racist and an antisemite and an embarrassment to President Obama and to the country.

But freedom of speech allows him to spew his hate.

How could President Obama have stayed in that church for so long. It calls into question his character, courage and attitude.

Please, journalists, look at your stopwatch and notice that "Mr." Writes 15 minutes have long since expired.

fishy fish   June 11th, 2009 4:54 pm ET

Obama socialist dictator? Well, Mr. Wright is still talking, rather than being waterboarded at guantanamo.

Sam I Am   June 11th, 2009 4:53 pm ET

I don't think "them Jews" are preventing Wright from talking to Obama. I can see it now. The White House operator rings the Oval Office. Obama asks who is calling. She tells him, "it's Reverend Wright". Obama says, "Tell him I'm not here." Wright should get a clue. Not only does Obama not want to talk to him or hear from him, neither does any other rational and reasonable citizen.

Certainly there is freedom of speech in this country, but freedom of speech is not absolute. If you are spewing hatred and racism, if you are advocating death and destruction of other people, no matter what side of the political spectrum you are on, your "freedom of speech" marginalizes you and in extreme cases, can land you in jail. Mr. Wright, like Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, and Coulter have shown us how the right to free speech can be abused. Let us hope in the near future rational and decent people will pull the plug on these people.

Interesting reply. So let me understand this, if CNN reports a negative story on a republican (Palin or Bush for example) its OK and you jump in and attack. If CNN reports a negative story about a democrat, you want them to just blow through it and report on crucial issues instead? There are no crucial issues when the report is on Palin? You are a HYPOCRAT!

Sniffit   June 11th, 2009 4:52 pm ET

See? It's not just GOPers who don't know when to shut the hell up and stop digging their hole. Of course, they're responding to Wright digging his hole deeper by digging their own hole deeper with comments trying to put Wright's words in Obama's mouth...but hey, I consider the Commentary sections of the Ticker to be a fantastic repository for irony. I just wish more people realized it.

Fred the Moderate   June 11th, 2009 4:52 pm ET

Wright, the gift that keeps on giving. He reminds me of Cheney – they both can't figure it out that we don't want to see them, hear them or read about them anymore. They are irrelevant, washed-up, has- beens. We have moved on in this country. We don't want to know they have ever existed.

Some one please tell them – there is no room in a big tent for small minded people!

Yep..I'm still wondering. I sat in church from childhood to adulthood, over 20 years, and I still don't believe a word of any of it. Just because you GOPers and right-wing fundies take everything a dude in a robe tells you at face value while you're sitting in a pew, doesn't mean the rest of the planet does.

This man is just not any racist, he is a pastor that baptized Obamas kids, wed Obama and his wife, been his mentor and spiritual leader for 20+ yrs. Obama called him "uncle" he calls Obama his "son"
I think Rev. Wright knows Obama better than any blogger in here.
If Obama saw that it would hurt his political goals he will distance himself from anybody. You saw it on the speech about racism, he threw his white grand-mother under the bus, the hand that has fed him and raised him to what he is today.
Politicians do what they have to do to stay where they are, that said Obama is politician......

Oh Lord Reverend Wright, find a corner some where and sit your rear end in a corner. You meant what you said. You cannot un-ring the bell. For the love of Jesus go happily in the sun and enjoy your retirement. America does not need any further division as it is, and all you are doing is feeding the far right hate machine.
