KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine (CNN) - Former President George H.W. Bush celebrated his 85th birthday Friday by doing what has become his tradition - making a parachute jump - and commenting on national affairs.

"This is great," the elder Bush said after landing near a church in Kennebunkport, Maine, the Bushes' summer home. "I'm glad to be alive and glad my family's all with me."

Bush made the tandem jump from 10,500 feet harnessed to a member of the U.S. Army parachute team. Jumping with him was Robin Meade, an anchor on CNN sister network HLN, also harnessed to a more experienced jumper.

Back on the ground, Bush was flanked by two of his sons - former president George W. Bush, who left office in January, and Jeb Bush, former governor of Florida.

The elder Bush said he intends to do another jump on his 90th birthday.

He made his first jump as a Navy pilot when his plane was shot down over the Pacific during World War II. He also made two jumps apiece on his 75th and 80th birthdays, and another in November 2007 at the reopening of his library at Texas A&M University.

Earlier in the day, Bush talked to Meade about U.S. Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, whose Senate confirmation hearings start July 13.

Bush, who nominated Sotomayor for a U.S. District Court judgeship for the Southern District of New York in 1992, said she should receive a "fair hearing" as she seeks a seat on the nation's highest court.

Sotomayor is expected to win approval as the first Hispanic Supreme Court justice and the third woman to serve as a Supreme Court justice. She currently is a judge for the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Asked his opinion, Bush said: "I have a feeling she will be confirmed." "I'm going to leave that to others to analyze, but she should be given a fair hearing," he said. "She should be accorded every courtesy that goes with her record as a judge and her aspirations to be a Supreme Court justice."

Sotomayor has been criticized by some conservatives for her remarks on diversity, and a comment made in 2001 and paraphrased on other occasions that she "would hope that a wise Latina woman, with the richness of her experiences, would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

Bush noted that someone had called Sotomayor a "racist." "Well, that's not right. I mean, it's not fair. It doesn't help the process to be out there name-calling. So let them decide whether they want to vote for her or not, and get on with it."

The former president was asked whether, as he becomes older, he is thinking more about his legacy.

"I think my view on legacy is let the historians figure out what I screwed up, and figure out what I got right.

"And I'm confident that, you know, we had a good administration and good people. And I think the same thing is true of our son. And you know, he had tough times and all, but he's doing it right. He's laying back there and he's not criticizing the president. And I'm very proud of him."

"I hope that we both have set examples for how you ought to conduct yourself when you've been president and then go out of office," Bush said. "Let the other guy do it, and support him when you can and be silent. Don't be out there criticizing all the time."

When the 41st president was asked about the nation's most pressing problems, he listed the economy, unemployment and health care.

"I think it will get better. I remain optimistic about our recovery and all of that," he said.

Bush acknowledged that his schedule is far less hectic these days, but he keeps busy with traveling - he plans trips to Germany and China this year - and humanitarian work with the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, which is part of the University of Texas.

He described his love of skydiving. "Just because you're old, that doesn't mean you can't do fun stuff. And you don't want to sit around drooling in the corner. And so it's a wonderful release.

"And you know, because I was president it sends a message all around. Go out and get something doing. Just 'cause … old guys can still have fun and still do stuff."

Happy Birthday Mr. President! I think it is rather pathetic all of the negativity surrounding our former President. Democrats - take note of the fact that neither Bush Sr. or Bush Jr. are out criticizing President Obama. Please don't respond with nonsense that their is nothing to criticize! The fact is whether you like or dislike Sr. or Jr., they have acted with nothing but decency and respect to President Obama. It is unfortunate that so many other politicians (elected or displaced) can't act with such decency.

lf   June 12th, 2009 8:01 pm ET

Sir, You have served your time in the Oval Office, and I am proud you can do what you did at 85 yrs. of age. You still have a lot 'on the ball' and I would not chance a parachute jump for myself at any age.

History will have a final word on every former President who has served.
I think you did a great job while many may not agree with me, so be it!!

I hope you can make you next jump when you are 90 yrs. of age!

Thanks also for your service in WW2!

Gary Horowitz   June 12th, 2009 7:59 pm ET

Happy Birthday Mr. President

And many more. You are a true American treasure. All the Best to you and your family. You look great – and so does Barbara. Seeing you behind the microphone, reminds me of the good old days when my Republican friends were in charge.

Grannie D   June 12th, 2009 7:52 pm ET

There is only ONE thing wrong with President Bush jumping from that plane. That is, that I wasn't along for the jump and I'll be 83 on my coming birthday. Wait for me next time,Sir.

Lori (the real one since some Republican has hijacked my name on this blog)   June 12th, 2009 7:52 pm ET

There's a Bush I could actually like.

Why so much hate? This article isn't about hate. Why does hate always get dragged in?

I am a liberal in my beliefs. But I greatly appreciate what George W. H. Bush, Sr. had to say.

He did the best he could and as a former president you should support your president.

Enjoy life. Do fun things, Get out there.

I'm just so sick of the negativity. There have been and always will be so many wrongs and so many disputes on each side.

Can't we ever find the common ground and respect eachother for our differences?

Call me crazy.

How did this article go from jumping out of an airplane to was he a good or bad president?????

DOC   June 12th, 2009 7:30 pm ET

With everything else thats going on in the world, one would hope CNN would have something of importance to report on instead of the sophomoric behavior of an ex-politician.

I hope that Mr. Bush celebrates many more years, makes many more jumps, and never takes time to read the moronic and cowardly statements posted here.

CNN should use an idiot-litmus test to evaluate the messages before they get posted. Disagreement with or dislike of a person or policy doesn't have to be nasty. And if 99% of those posters had the chance to say those things in person to the people that they slam from their keyboards, they wouldn't take the chance.

Mr. President, Happy 85th BirthdayI Great Jump!

Congratulations from an Independent 67 year-old Army veteran from Illinois!

To those who feel the need to criticize, get over it and move on. This is a birthday celebration in 2009.

Jay   June 12th, 2009 7:09 pm ET

As a nation, why can't we agree to disagree without calling names and getting "personal"? Being on a sideline, we can always pass judgements on both Bushes. I think given the environment, they did the right thing at the right time. I hope Obama does the same and we give him time before jump the gun and pass judgements.

Being from a third world county, some of you don't realize how great is this nation, its people, resources and most importantly "value" of liberty / freedom.. God Bless USA..

Blog gone bad here ... c'mon folks he wasn't my favorite prez either but with the exception of Nixon, most post-prez's admit their faults and work to repair damage. This one has. And he still has an admirable courage!

Junkman   June 12th, 2009 6:45 pm ET

Cngrats on your 85 b-day 41. I would like to say that as an honorable man you have served our country well along with all other presidents.
For all you others out there wishing the parachutes hadnt opened or are insinuating death or harm to the presidents of past should be prosecuted for making death threats. Remember that we all make mistakes and that some day no matter what you beleive in you will more than likely have to pay for them. I think as a nation we should step back and look at all the great things our previous fathers and presidents have done for us. If we cant look past this unrational thinking on both sides of the fence then we as a country will throw our selves into another civil war. We all have enough on our plates so lets try to enjoy some of these times while we still can.

Russ H   June 12th, 2009 6:45 pm ET

I am not going to say much since he is a veteran, but the republican side of the house sucks, oops, I forgot Pelosi on the other side.

I fear for this country. After the past 8 years, there is so much anger and hatred. I am a republican- and I voted for Obama and I'm glad I did. This country needs to heal. 9/11 left horrific scars on all of us- but we shouldn't turn on each other- we all love our country. Having different points of view is a good thing. If we don't like what's going on, then vote. Or, run for office yourself.

frank Simmons   June 12th, 2009 6:40 pm ET

reagan lover   June 12th, 2009 6:38 pm ET

Mr, Bush Sr. seemed like a lock for a second term until he raised taxes (read my lips...............) I voted for him instead of Clinton (actually Bush Sr. lost that election because of Ross Perot) My only question is "why are we taxpayers paying for Army personnel and equipment to celebrate an ex-president's birhtday? Is Mr. Bush palnning on reimbursing the Army? Actually, we shouldn't be paying for any president's birthday celebrations!

Cheryl, North Carolina, Democrat   June 12th, 2009 6:28 pm ET

I am a democrat. I am respectful. This is how I was raised. Both Bushs are out of office and as far as I am concerned, no matter what you think about them, they deserve our respect. Period. History can be debated till you turn blue in the face, but someone with good character and class can do so with honor and integrity. No mud slinging. It only shows you are intellectually inferior to use such small and hateful words. Now...Happy Birthday Mr. President. Congratulations on your jump. I hope to see you jump many more times!

Nick K.   June 12th, 2009 6:28 pm ET

41 is something 43 is not. He is a war hero. And he knew when to get out of a situation as in the first gulf war. Also the son went completely insane by choosing to fight a war on two fronts. One of which was completely unwarranted. Heck if had to choose a second front he should have fought in North Korea. But I don't think he had the cojones to do that because he knew the North Koreans with their ICBMs were for real while Iraq was not. He could freely enter Iraq and there was nothing that the Iraqis with their nonexistent WMDs could do about it. The North Koreans with their real weapons could vaporize Seoul, Tokyo and even Hawaii before they themselves went down.

J Smith   June 12th, 2009 6:25 pm ET

Congrats to President Bush. All politics aside, I think it says a lot that his first jump was from a Navy plane....but he continues to jump Army.

As a man, father, and active part of the military it saddens me about some of the comments i have read on here. I honorably served under G.W. Bush and am currently serving under Obama. With comments that i have read i am in aww... He is an american hero and protected every freedom you have today. Even the freedom to bash him and his family openly on the internet. I am saddened because i am protecting your freedom to sit at home with nothing better to do than show disrespect for our former presidents (by the way: Your tax dollars and mine pay their salaries for the rest of their lives and im glad they do). All you haters on here need to get a life and show some respets. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. PRESIDENT

Brian   June 12th, 2009 6:24 pm ET

Wow, I missed this the first time, but Liam actually thinks that this was MORE expensive than flying the President of the United States to New York. You couldn't buy 2 opera tickets for what this jump cost us. Everywhere the president goes he takes 2 Boeing 747s, plus support and cargo aircraft. The estimated cost of the Air Force One photo shoot was $300,000 just for 3 flight hours of just ONE of the two 747s (the F-16s cost a measly $30,000 for 1.8 flight hours). That means the cost of Obama's trip was at least $600,000 just for the two 747s.

MCW   June 12th, 2009 6:23 pm ET

GHWB is a private citizen so he paid for his jump himself. The only thing taxpayers cover is his Secret Service protection, but all ex-presidents get that benefit.

BTW, I'm from Houston, too, and I enjoy seeing George and Bar at the ballpark as well...sat in the Diamond boxes once (on someone else's nickel) when George was there and it was pretty cool.

And to everyone using this story to air their political comments and rantings, please limit them to the story at hand – a human interest story about an 85 year old ex-president jumping out of a plane on his birthday.

princess   June 12th, 2009 6:20 pm ET

For those who haven't done it, sky diving is very easy. Especially a tandem jump. Beginners are all restricted to tandem jumps, you don't just get thrown out of a plane your first time. That said, lets not punish Bush Sr. too much for what I think we can all agree his Moronic son did. Sr was no Gem, but compared to the Failings of Jr. he's looking a bit better these days.

Julie in LA   June 12th, 2009 6:04 pm ET

I agree that comments like those from 'Jon in CA' have no place on a board like this. I thought I'd find open-minded, educated, thinking citizens of the world on a CNN board. 'Jon in CA' needs to find other grounds to promote his violent hate, or better yet, just shut up.

G   June 12th, 2009 5:59 pm ET

for those that are wondering about the funding for this jump...it came from the UNFUNDED budget of the army...this is money that our troops have gathered by perfoming outstanding maintenance on our equipment preventing them from breaking down, thus the money that would be spent to fix it went to an UNFUNDED category...this money is spent on buying extra equipment, upgrading equipment, and helping people out if they need something...and yes it does still have to be approved by individuals before it is spent...and that jump also kept some pilots qualified to fly their aircraft as well as to keep the parachuter qualified to jump...so it wasnt just for Bush to enjoy a much deserved birthday gift, it was also helping our troops out by keeping them ready to go at a moments notice...there is a bigger picture than just the one of him jumping...

Congrats to Bush for a successful jump...best wishes and God Speed!

For those that think it is ridiculous that the money was spent for this celebration...it goes both ways you know...Obama spent money to get his new dog trained and actually has a dog sitter...but you dont hear any complaints about that money? hmmm...

God Bless America...if you dont like it here...then LEAVE!!

Give H.W. Bush some credit! It's W. Bush that is the dummy one - didn't listen to his dad's advice on Iraq, draft dodged the Vietnam war, barely graduated from Yale & HBS; catered to the right-wing, gun/religion clingers, etc.

Conservatives, expect trash talks by libs. You get what you dished out the last 8 years!

Libs, Aim your anger well! Otherwise, you have as much credibility as W. Bush, Palin, or Pelosi!

Shouldn't we all be working together, focusing our anger, and helping the Pakistanis purge the Talibans/Al Quaeda from the Swat Valley? Let's not lose our focus (Talibans & our economy)!

George W. Bush mislead the Americans on WMDs of Iraq. Intelligence reports were manufactured to mislead America into Iraq war. GWB admitted this in his farewell address. None of the 9/11 terrorists were from Iraq. In fact these terrorists were from Countries that are friends of America. 4200 US Troop have died and 46000 US Troops have been injured. GHW Bush Sr. was not a good president. GW Bush Jr. was a terrible president. Just wait 2 years and you will see that Obama is going to be far worse than either Bush.
Frankly, Obama has done the opposite of just about everything he promised in his campaigns to get elected. Talk about teflon president – why isn't Obama being hammered for bending over backwards and forwards to kiss up to Islam? Personally, I think a president should follow the principles of separation of church and state. Regardless of what you think of Islam, a president should not be endorsing nor condemning any religion including Christianity. Religion should be protected from AND excluded from any governing power.

BobR   June 12th, 2009 5:50 pm ET

Happy Birthday, Mr. President!! What character and dignity. A war hero, a President and Barbara Bush's husband, couldn't be any better.

Shayla   June 12th, 2009 5:48 pm ET

I'm beyond over all the hate and negativity brought by both sides. Let it go.

Happy birthday, Mr. President. I think that it's pretty impressive to skydive at 85, or any age for that matter. Liberal or conservative, everyone needs to grow up.

Liam Danhof   June 12th, 2009 5:48 pm ET

So how much did this little deal cost us? I see that no one is comparing it to Mr. Obama going to NY to take in a show. Double standard as usual. I am sure the trip to NY was a lot cheaper then taking a military aircraft for a joy ride. If Obama did this he would have hell to pay from the republicians (small "r). Again, double standard.

genevieve   June 12th, 2009 5:48 pm ET

hum hum s'cuse me but

as far as ruining America I think the current "Messiah" hum!!!!president is doing a great job on his own without anybody's help.

Dear liberals, short term memory is affecting them too, how sad!!!! the whole "f...." mortgage crisis being caused mostly on policies enacted under democrats administrations. But hey who can remember that far back.

The Real Slim Shady   June 12th, 2009 5:43 pm ET

He's a brave man. I am not jumping out of a plane at any age.

Hoping for an intelligent female GOP candidate   June 12th, 2009 5:42 pm ET

Way to go, former President Bush. I hope the jump was as much fine as it looks. I sincerely expect to see you jumping in celebration of your 90th year.

MHouse   June 12th, 2009 5:42 pm ET

George H.W. Bush is truely one of the great american presidents too bad his son had to drag down the family name when he made it to office.

I'm not even American & I salute George senior.

jana   June 12th, 2009 5:41 pm ET

C'mon guys. I voted Dem last election, but the former president did something neat. I hope other seniors out there are as adventureous. Why is all this bi-partisan hate over something like this? Can't we all just park the politics every once in a while? Happy Birthday President Bush from a 29 year old democrat woman in Iowa. You go with your bad self!!! Anytime you are in IA, I would love to buy you and your wife a beer.

Heidi   June 12th, 2009 5:40 pm ET

Good for GHW Bush. Congrats on hitting 85. May we all feel well enough to jump out of an airplane on our 85th. (You won't catch me up there but I would love to be healthy enough to do it...)

Patriot   June 12th, 2009 5:40 pm ET

I never voted for Bush Sr, but I'll have to give him credit. He's got a lot of guts to do what he's doing at the ripe old age of 85. I wish him luck!

Jo   June 12th, 2009 5:39 pm ET

Regardless of which party George Sr. belongs to, I think it is totally awesome that an 85-year-old man is skydiving. I may not agree with him politically, but I have to say that this is a pretty kick-butt way to celebrate a birthday! YOU GO GEORGE!

Hawleywood   June 12th, 2009 5:39 pm ET

He is a war veteran and fought for our country. Everyone seems to forget the past. I wish him the best. All the negative comments come from the low end that need help from the government.

Trish   June 12th, 2009 5:39 pm ET

I don't know about the Bush family, but I love those Army guys!

brad   June 12th, 2009 5:39 pm ET

Happy 85'th birthday! Thank you for helping to prove that life is not over once you retire! I have absolutely no comment about bush the president, or bush the war hero... however, Bush the skydiver, is an inspiration.

It is really saddening that some people have left such hateful comments on this forum. George Bush Sr, accomplished something with this skydive that the majority of you would not have the nerve to even attempt.

Skydiving helps people to appreciate the beauty and preciousness of life.

"When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return."

AJ   June 12th, 2009 5:38 pm ET

Maybe next time he can have Palin's daughter on the way down...

Wow some of you really are stupid   June 12th, 2009 5:37 pm ET

what kind of 3rd grade comments are being posted?

way to go Mr. Bush, you are an inspiration

Jake James   June 12th, 2009 5:37 pm ET

I hope this jump wasn't on the taxpayer's bill.
Depite my dislike for W, I'm glad that Bush Sr. landed safe.
He wasn't the worst president of all time, but he fathered a couple of dim wits.

tdawg69   June 12th, 2009 5:37 pm ET

If you are going to criticize someone's spelling, you should spell correctly yourself.

Brian E   June 12th, 2009 5:36 pm ET

he wanted to see what the economy felt like

Ron, Sanford Maine   June 12th, 2009 5:36 pm ET

I live in Sanford near Kennebunkport and saw the Army prop plane and the Army Knights skydiving team pull out in SUVs and assumingly head to the Bush compound just a few miles away.

This Army team travels the country to put on shows as a recruiting tool. I am sure this was on their itinerary for some time and was perhaps in their budget as well.

Yes, we pay for this but how many 85 year olds are in this kind of shape? I am not a Republican but I say hooray Mr. President. Hope you celebrate many more.

Eric   June 12th, 2009 5:35 pm ET

Ben, don't you conservatives need the government to protect you from all the evil Muslims hiding around every corner, trying to take away your liberty?

MAkers   June 12th, 2009 5:35 pm ET

For all of you who continue to ask, "who is paying for all of this?" When you serve as President of the United States, even if you liked or disliked them, they are protected for life by the secret service.

Didn't 'we' just pay $350,000 to have a photo shoot in NYC to re-inact 9/11 under Obama's watch?

I hope when I am 85 I will still be health enough to have the opportunity to sky-dive......

SYSPROG   June 12th, 2009 5:34 pm ET

WOW! Such nastiness from BOTH sides! Good for 41! 85 years old and jumps out of a plane to celebrate. Push away from your keyboards folks and think about 'could I ever do that?' Honest to Pete, is there NOTHING good in this world???

Lily in Texas   June 12th, 2009 5:34 pm ET

I served for 6 years went to Iraq and Afghanistan and couldn't be any prouder to have served under the Bush Administration, I'm glad I don't have to serve under a horrible administration that knows nothing about the military and wasn't even brave enough to serve himself!

And stop putting my fallen comrades names in yall's mouth they died honorably fighting for their country! No matter what anybody says!!

marinevet   June 12th, 2009 5:34 pm ET

can you liberals possibly be any more pathetic???? attacking a man as he celebrates his b-day. all you do is trash and take. you obamamaniacs criticize the bush's for wasting tax dollars???? that, in itself, is AMAZING!!!! idiocracy is truly taking shape.

John, Rochester MN   June 12th, 2009 5:34 pm ET

@dontreadonme:
Yes, the Dems approved the war, based on the false/invented intelligence given to them by Bush/Cheney. Wake up.

By the way, people, I think Jon in CA was being facetious in order to show how ridiculous David's comment was. Hence the "have a great weekend" at the end there. I could be wrong, but that's how it looks to me.

iisJoMamma   June 12th, 2009 5:34 pm ET

Ban Jon in CA. Get him outta here. Here's another response to Jon's vicious side: Wow,
some comments on here are simply aghasting. Jon in CA said something that is simply unworthy of repetition.
What a way to put hatred back in our lives "Jon in CA." People like you need to be educated and taught some real life lessons. Sitting behind internet walls and saying things like that is shameful and disgusting.

Brian Paul   June 12th, 2009 5:33 pm ET

After reading some of the comments in regards to president bush senior, I'm embarrassed to be a liberal. George Bush Senior is a very honorable man and deserves better.

Anonymous   June 12th, 2009 5:31 pm ET

I'm embarrassed to see some of these comments on this site. No matter what you think of a former President, they deserve our respect, not hateful comments.

all you people that that say the president is terrible, the republicans suck, the democrats suck too, bla bla bla bla... People why don't you step back and look at where you live? Rosalinda   June 12th, 2009 5:27 pm ET

Since so many right-wingers questioned the cost of Obama's NY date night, what did Sr. Bush's jump cost the taxpayers?

Rachel   June 12th, 2009 5:27 pm ET

Amen, Ann!

hannah   June 12th, 2009 5:26 pm ET

Big whoop. The entire Bush family is nuts. And why are we still having to read about them? We kicked them out, last I heard!

Chad   June 12th, 2009 5:26 pm ET

Excellent grammar and speeling Randy! You sure make your arguments seem very official.

Woflangel   June 12th, 2009 5:26 pm ET

Oh, the liberals, if they only knew what they were talking about. Try looking up the word "ignorant" in the dictionary!!

Hope you had a wonderful birthday and looking forward to reading about your next jump on your 90th.

Joe in CA   June 12th, 2009 5:25 pm ET

Hey Joe Jackson, 133. I'm with you. I wonder if he would have jumped if he had to PAY for this photo op.

GOPbslapper   June 12th, 2009 5:24 pm ET

Though an honest evaluation of Bush Sr. would grade him as a mediocre President. It makes the short comings of his son George, all the more Glaring. Many families have at least one kid that is a Dud, I'm sure Bush Sr. wishes he would have pulled out the night George Jr was conceived.

Ray in NC   June 12th, 2009 5:23 pm ET

For those of you giving him grief about jumping in tandem, just don't forget that his first jump was a solo jump from a burning plane in the middle of WWII.

All of you haters need to get a life. At least the Bushes haven't soldout the American economy like your hero Obama. Lets see if you are still in love with him in a few years.

Rene   June 12th, 2009 5:23 pm ET

Your comments sound like your too stupid to read, it's pretty obvious really.

Ben   June 12th, 2009 5:21 pm ET

Can the far left please stop crying about the Bush family. I realized at a young age that Liberals love to whine and cry about everything.

– I dont make enough money
– My boss is too tough on me
– Can we unionize?

Sound familier Libs? Maybe one day you will wake up and realize that most Republicans don't care who the President is. We like to accomplish things on our own. We don't count on government for anything. Maybe now that your savior is in office the libs can get even more handouts.

Robyn   June 12th, 2009 5:21 pm ET

Good for him! There is so much jealousy and ignorance and hate in this country. It is sad people have to be that way.

JayG   June 12th, 2009 5:21 pm ET

Randy: You have got to be kidding me. Bush family is worst than Hitler and Sadaam??? Bush didnt send people to gas chambers and persecute people based on their race.

we should all be so lucky at 85! congrats!

Brijesh Kukreja   June 12th, 2009 5:20 pm ET

What a shame to destroy the country and having fun. This is for both the Bushes who have been bad for this country.

Damon   June 12th, 2009 5:20 pm ET

Way to go! Livin' life to the fullest. An inspiration to the younger folk.

Thanks for your service... even though I disagree with him and his son.

Brijesh Kukreja   June 12th, 2009 5:19 pm ET

Both of the bushes have no shame. Both have ruined the country and made it poor. People are suffering job losses with homes being forclosed and here Bushes are enjoying the jump.

What a shame!! They certainly dont deserve this. They should be helping out people and doing community service for what they have done to this country.

Jon   June 12th, 2009 5:18 pm ET

As far as Republican, Bushes or Palins are concerned. They all are living off of dreams set out by our tax dollars. They made US into a prison state and created wars and hatred among Americans and among people of the world.

Sarah Palin can't even take a little joke off of Letterman and is using his comments for her own flight attendant imagery and public sympathy.

Conservatives are known to hate, hate and more hate. Conservatives have no value of human life or respect. Unless its their own families. Look at Cheney, he is a neo-con but defends his lesbian daughter. What a mockery and hipocricy by the right wing freaks!

American   June 12th, 2009 5:16 pm ET

Liberals hate George H. W. Bush because he is a man of integrity who served his country with honor in WWII. Happy Birthday, Mr. President!

JayG   June 12th, 2009 5:15 pm ET

Tanya, how dare you talk about Bush wasting tax dollars when we have a Obama's stimulus bill paying for honey bee insurance!

John, Rochester MN   June 12th, 2009 5:15 pm ET

He was in as much freefall as his son put the economy into.

Frank R. Shaw   June 12th, 2009 5:14 pm ET

I'm 71 and I hope I live long enough to see George H. W. Bush jump out of an airplane on his 90th birthday, and his 95th and 100th. God bless him and his family. I voted for him twice and would do it again if he would run. NOW, for all you "potty mouths" out there, on both sides, I have a bar of soap for each of you! Shame on you! Neither of you could carry his jock strap!

What have we come to as a nation and people when we can not disagee with each other and not be so hateful? I wish the Bushes, The Clintons and the Obamo"s nothing but the best. Too bad so many people have become so bitter and angry when we are blessed with the greatest nation on earth and agree or disagree politaclly all of these people have given much to serve our nation. They all deserve our respect and gratitude.

Randy   June 12th, 2009 5:13 pm ET

George HW and George W Bush are responsible for:
1. Initiation wars against Iraq, a timid Country, and deaths of thousands of innocent men, women and children.
2. Why didn’t the Bushes dare to attack Russia and China, who supply weapons to Al Quida?
3. Bushes are greedy for Oil.
4. Death of 4300 US Troops in the unjustified war of Iraq.
5. Bush family is Worst than Hitler and Saddam.

GB   June 12th, 2009 5:11 pm ET

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "...holy sheet...what a ride!"

Yeah! Die trying, not watching...

Mike   June 12th, 2009 5:11 pm ET

George was the youngest fighter/bomber pilot at the time he graduated from flight training. He cam from priviledge and could have dodged his duty....he did not. He was shot down while attacking a radio and radar installation on Chichi Jima. His crew mates perished. He parachuted into the ocean and was nearly captured. Rescued by a submarine, USS Finback. He went on to complete more combat missions before the war's end.........Captain of Yale baseball team. Millionaire businessman. Congressman. Director of the CIA. Vice President. President. Devoted husband and father who gave much to his country.

Negative comments demonstrate ignorance.

Dorothy   June 12th, 2009 5:10 pm ET

Showing the senior Bush once or twice in one day is more than enough – do you have to repeat it all day or show it on all your CNN channels? It gets pretty sickening, and boring as the Bush family is NOT that interesting nor that popular that we want to hear about them ALL day! It looks as though you (CNN) have an obsession with them, though!

We also had more than enough of GW Bush and his corruption for eight yrs. to want to hear that much about his father!

GOPbslapper   June 12th, 2009 5:10 pm ET

You have to wonder if just for a moment, Bush 41 thought about landing on top of Bush 43 and yelling "Mission Acomplished"!

Joe Jackson   June 12th, 2009 5:10 pm ET

For his 90th he should jump without a parachute and with W on his back....

Pat   June 12th, 2009 5:09 pm ET

Hey Chicago Jim, you could actually work hard and not wait to have the gov't give you an "economic parachute". However, it's prbably easier for you to be lazy and piss & moan about it

Cali J   June 12th, 2009 5:08 pm ET

How will this country ever come together with all the stupid hatred generated on this, and the Palin board? Obama won, so how come the Libs are so full of hate and name calling and such? It appears that soon, this divided country will only be able to settle it's differences the same way it did in the 1800's. Brother against brother, neighbor against neighbor.
Let's put some facts out here: Both repub and dem leaders voted for the Iraq war. The dems just changed their minds when the political wind blew the other direction. They had the choice because their man wasn't in the white house.
The war still continues and Afghanistan is being escalated, so Obama also feels the need to be engaged in those areas even after his campaign promises.
Bush spent too much money, but Obama has spent more money.
Point being, politicians win when we are divided and hating each other over ideology or partisian politics. We better pull our heads out and see what's really going on. Stop the hate.

knm   June 12th, 2009 5:05 pm ET

didi – Have you ever heard of proof reading your own work? That is pathetic. And yes, I am interested in a 85 year old man that has the energy and health to jump out of an airplane. It is refreshing to hear some good and fun that is going on in the world. I for one get tired of hearing all the gloom and doom.

Marc in Virginia   June 12th, 2009 5:04 pm ET

A lot of internet tough guys on here who wouldn't have the balls to jump out of a plane but they talk plenty of smack online. President Bush, thanks for your service to this country. Here's to your jump in 5 years.

V   June 12th, 2009 5:02 pm ET

I'm not a big Bush fan, but I still got love for him. Daps to him and a Happy Birthday! And to be honest, although I loathed the Iraq War, I now am glad beyond belief that his son started it. I believe that thru the tragedy, we will end up with an inevitably better world. Let democracy reign, baby! And I agree, the nasty comments are just unnecessary. It is the man's birthday! Come on now!

Jennifer Wills   June 12th, 2009 5:02 pm ET

I didn't vote for him or his son and I am a lifelong Dem but i think this is great!

james johnson   June 12th, 2009 5:02 pm ET

I miss the days when Republicans are in office. Since Stepin Fetchit was made president, we now have 5 states allowing sexual deviants to marry, a racist hispanic nominated for Supreme Court, pis-ant countries like North Korea and Cuba openly defying us, and the Joker is Speaker of the house.

God bless all of the Bush's.

Steve   June 12th, 2009 5:02 pm ET

I too am 41-year old Democrat and think that this jump and vigor at his age has nothing to do with politics.

Take your partisan hats off and wish this guy a well-deserved Happy Birthday.

We all should be so lucky and healthy to be able to do that.

(Oh, and I did vote for him since in 1988 he was clearly the better choice for President!)

Joe in CA   June 12th, 2009 5:01 pm ET

What a waste of taxpayer's money to have this OLD man jump out of a plane with the Army's Knights. Kinda gives you flash backs of "Mission Accomplished" when we flew another dumb ass BUSH for free for no apparent reason. Too bad the parachutes worked for all three.

Washington State   June 12th, 2009 5:01 pm ET

hearing what people are saying right or left... it is totally pathetic...

You have the right to express your opinions, but when you cut speak about cutting someone's wife head off, think of Daniel Pearl...

People yell about being in a Socialist Country, but you ignore that we were actually close to a Police State after 911....

While I was little when H.W. was the Pres, I have gone back and looked at what he did. And, while I'm more liberal than conservative, I have to admit he was a decent pres. His successor brought on some improvements that were before unseen...Then came the "Air National Guard" W. Eight years, an (at first) illegal war, a massive recession, and "terrorists everywhere" later...Look at the mess that we have created for ourselves. I personally voted for Obama, because it seemed to me that McCain would be the next G.W. Bush, but in the grand scheme of things, only time will tell, and we will have to roll with the punches as they come.

As for G.H.W. Bush, it's good to see that at 85 he's still able to do what he does, and work with a former enemy in Clinton in good stuff for this country. Good luck in what you do, man. Hopefully you can help band this divided nation together.

New Englander   June 12th, 2009 4:56 pm ET

I love the wacky moonbats that watch/visit CNN. There is another party, remember.

We will all be saying how Obama screwed up our country with his ridiculous spending and fuzzy bear foreign politics with Iran/Taliban/Bin Laden.

I cannot wait for the day.

Great to see him in such good shape at the age of 85. This guy had one of the most remarkable resumes in the history of Washington DC

GOPbslapper   June 12th, 2009 4:54 pm ET

Though I wasn't a huge fan of the elder Bush , (remember the Wimp moniker attached to him). I'm glad to see him enjoying his golden years jumping out of a plane. As opposed to his son Georgie who a lot of us would like to see pushed out of a plane.......sans parachute.

truegangsteroflove   June 12th, 2009 4:54 pm ET

He gets two points for this. It doesn't undo the harm his family has done to this planet over the decades. His father, Prescott Bush, was involved in what some have called Nazi collaboration. Others might call it aggressive investing. Bush himself was involved in the Iran-Contra scandal, which conveniently was whitewashed. The first invasion of Iraq was a setup, needlessly prosecuted. Then there is his son. Still, he jumped out of a plane at age 85. Two points, no more.

JP   June 12th, 2009 4:54 pm ET

He served our country...I'll give him that...but how about showing up for President Obama's inaugration without a shirt and tie. Very disrespectful. He was wearing a yellow turtle neck. And don't give me excuses about it being cold and him being older. If he can jump out of a plane, he can wear a shirt and tie in winter weather. Hell, there were people there in ties who are older than him.

The mind is like a parachute, it's of no use unless it's open. A concept lost of the the Bushes and their own party. I am a life-long Democrat, but I have a great deal of admiration for President Bush-41. He served our country well in World War II and as President he presided over the successful first Gulf War in which Saddam Hussein was ousted from Kuwait. Instead of criticizing him, I would think people would be wishing him a happy 85th birthday. I think he is an inspriation to elder Americans and I am grateful for the charitable work that he and President Clinton have done together since they left office.

It amazes me how many truly stupid and mean people embarrass themselves on this forum.

I read comments here on Sara Palin, Al Qaeda, War crimes, etc. This is about senior Bush celebrating his 85th birthday.

I bet most of you were pishing in dippers when he was President. He is not George W Bush! He is a veteran, the youngest pilot in WWII and has a lifetime of service to this country and works well with Bill Clinton on humanitarian issues. Instead of wishing he dies, set aside your nastiness and congratulate an 85 year old man who served his country.

You are a disgusting despicable person to make such a statement. It is sick to know that people like you wish for women "to be raped and their heads sawed off"?????? Just despicable. Shame on you and pity for any women in your life.

Shame on CNN for allowing such comments to make it on the board, what is the point of screening if hateful disgusting speech like that makes it on this forum. This is what is wrong with America; you do not understand the difference between free speech which accompanies responsibility and hate speech which is always allowed under the guise of free speech. Jon in CA is a hateful sexist less of a human (probably a James Von Brunn sympathizer) but shame on you CNN for giving him a platform.

And about this piece of "news" who give a crap. This is not news; he is a private citizen let him live in privacy and let us read about real news.

JayG   June 12th, 2009 4:14 pm ET

I do acknowledge that Alqaeda might not have been there before we went into Iraq, but there was after. what difference does it make if they were there before or after??? We were still fighting them?? What would be your choice of action?? Sit back and do nothing until another attack? ERIN, while we were fighting iraqi insurgents, we were also fighting Al Qaeda as much as you dont want to acknowledge that. At Least Bush has balls to stand up to terrorists, If Obama were president at the time, I think I recall him saying it was a no win situation and our troops could not win. If Obama were President when Iraq was going bad he said he would have pulled all troops out immediatly. Quite a decision maker he's gona be, we would have left Iraq to the terrorists and in utter chaos, thanks to the troop surge, you cant even find a story about it in the papers anymore.

Can you acknowledge that your fellow Dems approved the war in Iraq, and that Sadam was sponsoring terrorist that were blowing themselves up in Israel. That they attempted an assignation of president Bush. That there were terrorist cells “before” we got there. That Sadam did break the UN requirements. That he did kill millions of civilians including gassing the Kurds.
Finally that Iraq and the world is a safer place with that guy gone!

I never liked Daddy Bush that much when he was president, but after seeing his son, he's not looking as bad, and in his work with Clinton, he's been a good ex-president. I'm glad he had a happy birthday and is still able to sky-dive.

JayG, jeez, man, you are stupid. The terrorists killing our troops in Iraq weren't there until AFTER we invaded. Saddam saw Islamic terrorists as a threat to his power structure, so he kept them out. When we invaded, we opened the borders and now Iraq had plenty of terrorists, having free run of the place. You can thank your boy Bush for that one.

Clinton waged war in Bosnia but was to afraid the rail up the lib anti-war powderpuff wing to go after Osama before he nailed us.

Even Obama up the ante in Afganistan and has yet to pull out of Iraq.

War sucks but it is not partisian.

For one thing. I don't think it was a great joke but you know that is what comedians do, they make jokes whether disgusting or not. Some of us do not like them and some think they are hilarious but that is what they are out there to do and it is their job. Dave has been doing this for years and I do not hink it is going to stop now. Give me a break. She needs to grow up and put her big girl panties on. She knew what daughter he was referring to and she tried to put it off like he was a pervert and that is not right. either. If she can't take the heat she needs to leave the kitchen. She is the one that puts her family out their in public view and things are going to happen when your under age child gets pregnant and then turns 18 and puts herself out there for the world to see. She is plastered all over the cover of people.Yeah she is setting a good example, making herself rich over being a teen mom. Good example she is, please. Mrs. Palin just need to stop and let the small stuff go b/c she is going to have a rough road ahead if she takes every joke or comment to heart.

Why cant people acknowledge that??? Terrorists were killing our troops there, not Bush. Al qaeda was there killing troops, not Bush. Who the hell do you liberals think we were fighting there? While it may have been the wrong reason to goto war there, the terrorists met us in Iraq and were present there. So all you Bush hating liberals are ignorant when you say he killed 4000 troops. Al Qaeda killed 4000 troops, not Bush.

While I did not often agree with H.W. Bush's politics and decisions I did and still do have respect for him. This is in stark contrast to his son, President G.W.. H.W. is a veteran who bravely served our fine country in World War II. G.W. was in my view a draft dodger during the Vietnam War. And during the 2000 election campaign when G.W. questioned Kerry's service and the Swiftboat jerks did too, Kerry should have bluntly stated you can question my military action and accomplishments, but at least I WAS THERE PAL !!! Then he should have knocked G.W. on his ass. With this his election victory would have been assured.

@John

Um ... the taxpayers DID pay for that. Ex-Presidents get Secret Service protection for life (paid by the taxpayers), and Bush Sr. used the Army Parachute Team to assist his descent (paid by the taxpayers).

In fact, your whole complaint about the Obama's "date" night won't wash ... literally everything ANY President or ex-President does is paid for by the taxpayers in some way ... at the very least because they will always have taxpayer-supported protection 24/7. When an ex-Presdient flies ... we pay for that and for the flights of the protection team.

Get over your petty BS. Presidents cost the taxpayer money from the time they are elected to the time they die. That's the fact.

Do you think Dubya is back to the old habits, or did he ever quit?

gngpp   June 12th, 2009 3:09 pm ET

Did the American taxpayer's pay for this jump....Hasn't the Bush family spent enough of taxpayer's money on Bush family adventures??

Now that's one brave prez. who also is tryin' to infuse a lot of sense into numskulls like RL, and NG, who are drummin' the beats of ultraconservative ideologies that are quite idiotic. Mind you, they are not just their views, but obnoxious scare tactics
