CIA Director Leon Panetta says it's almost as if former vice president Dick Cheney is wishing for another terror attack on the U.S. in order to make his point. Panetta tells The New Yorker that Cheney "smells some blood in the water" on the issue of national security.

He suggests Cheney's actions are like "gallows politics" and also calls it "dangerous politics."

Dick Cheney — whom we barely saw or heard from for eight years — has been a very vocal critic of President Obama these past few months… especially when it comes to national security. He has said that the new president is making the U.S. less safe by rolling back Bush era policies.

Cheney has criticized President Obama for ordering the closing of the Guantanamo Bay prison and for stopping the use of enhanced interrogation techniques. In a speech last month, Cheney called some of Obama's decisions "unwise in the extreme."

Mr. Panetta did not say that the former VP is wishing for another terrorist attack. He said it's "almost" as if former vice president Dick Cheney is wishing for another terrorist attack on the US.

Am I to ASSUME that Mr. Panetta has the ability to read minds, or is this a gift only to tunnel minded democrats.

Thank God I'm an Independent!!

Will-South Dakota   June 15th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

FEAR MONGERING like he has for the last 8 years is all Cheney is doing.......does he belong to a right wing white supremist group?

Hillary Clintoon   June 15th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

Why didn't Panetta just call Cheney a racist the way they do to anyone who dares to criticize Barack Hussein Obama (rymes with osama)

David S.   June 15th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

Once upon a time the Bush administration suggested that to criticise the progress of war in Iraq would encourage the terrorists. Now we are hearing similar rhetoric from Panetta. I'm glad that Biden declined support that rhetoric.

Dawn in Pa   June 15th, 2009 3:36 pm ET

Hey CNN where is the ticker on what is happening in Iran, I have been watching RicK Sanchez and he shown some gruesome photos..

Travis-Atlanta   June 15th, 2009 3:36 pm ET

I feel like the whole republican party is wishing for one, Y i dont know!

Marry   June 15th, 2009 3:35 pm ET

Dick Cheney is one of those people who never cared for anyone except himself. Just as 9/11 played into his perverse vision of the world according to big business and profits, he must be put to shame by such a distinguished person like president Obama. A person that is hard working, smart, and capable, with his heart on the right spot and as one can already see, starting to be very successful for the American people. Being such a criminal, Cheney is surely dreaming every minute and hoping something bad will happen to the world.

former republican   June 15th, 2009 3:34 pm ET

Typical. But I called him out on this months ago! He would like nothing better than to be able to say "I told you so!" Well let me tell you something Mr. Cheney, its people like you with your lies, fear tactics, and misdirection of this country is why your losing voters in your party. I stated a long time ago that its almost as if he is taunting the terrorists by bad mouthing the current administration. I have a question for you...Whose was on watch during the 9/11 attack anyway??? Yeah, thats right you and Bush were, and you all decided to ignore the warnings!!! NOT President Obama...so quit blaming him!

Dave   June 15th, 2009 3:34 pm ET

We are certainly less safe with having had Cheney as VP.

NAVY JACK   June 15th, 2009 3:34 pm ET

there goes Panetta down the Nancy Pelosi Lane

dominican mama 4 Obama   June 15th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

I would like to commend Mr. Panetta for saying what everyone else is thinking. I do not think that Mr. Panetta was out of line at all. On the contrary, for a man that was too busy lining his pockets with gold to speak during his vp terms, Mr. Cheney has now located his tongue. And he has been using it at every turn to state that we're not safe with the current admininstration. He says it over, and over. Why not buy a billboard and invite all terrorists, domestic and international alike to come and takae their best shot? If only to prove that you were right all along? Why not support our president, or even advise him if you think you know better? You're inviting trouble Cheney. You need to shut the hell up.

Roger   June 15th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

I agree with Panetta. Look what Bush & Cheney done to our nation in the 8 years they were in charge....they destroyed our economy, employment, housing, banks, lending institutions, got us into 2 wars, the entire world seems to hate us.....

TALK,TALK vs ACTION, ACTION   June 15th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

We will see Obamas' talk and talk without actions and results...vs Bush'

action and action with mostly wrong results....So will Obamas' forever

talk and talk bring on the wrong results ? We will see..!!!!!

Laverne   June 15th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

Leon Panetta is absolutely RIGHT! Any intelligent person can pretty much sum up Dick Cheney. Yes, in this country we have freedom of speech, however, one should be responsible with their words. If Dick Cheney was so concerned about the safety of the American people, why not ask for a meeting with the powers involved and not spew your hatred in an unhelpful way. The American people does not set the national security policies, that is the job of the president and his national security team, that is how I pretty much sum up his foolishness. Dick Cheney need to accept he longer is VP and have absolutely no power left and if George Bush has not turned all power over to Dick Cheney maybe he would know his place right now!

Hal   June 15th, 2009 3:29 pm ET

Cheney has proven again and again that he lacks any morals.

Sending 4000 US troops to die in Iraq for a pack of lies.
Torturing POW's
Kidnapping people and sending them to be tortured in other countries
As a boardmember of Halliburton he hid money in the Caymens, sent guns to Iran and oversaw a company that later poisoned, electrocuted and stole millions of dollars from our troops overseas.

This man is quite possibly the most despicable person ever to lead this nation.

P. Y.   June 15th, 2009 3:29 pm ET

Of course that is what he wants. What surprises anyone ? Why are some people so naive to believe that no one would wish such a thing on our country. Sure they would. Just look at some of the idiot comments on this blog.

He has a right to speak. After all this is America.
The danger comes when a bunch of people believe him because of their religion or their politics or their limited education.

In my opinion, Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, O'Reilly, Ann Coulter, etc. are all terrorists because they want our country to fail just because a black president is in office. That is the real problem and that is something we should all be dealing with.

terry matejka   June 15th, 2009 3:29 pm ET

Dick Cheney says we are less safe and that he hopes we "will continue the policies that have kept us safe for the last eight years" September 11th 2001 was less than eight years ago and I am glad we are taking a different direction and staying within the bounds of the constitution. It seems that Dick Cheney would like to "cut and run" from the responsibility of 9/11.

Dan   June 15th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

No need to wait for an attack, we are now talking with terrorist rewarding them for their bad behavior, so what is the point of them attacking, they won! We are only against Bush supporters, Israel and other loyal friends... so the terrorists won! (Will CNN show this response?)

Ms. Dana   June 15th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

Dick Cheney should have helped keep the country safe. They are the reason why we are so hated!! We always had terror threats, no matter who was the President. The problem was that our allies was being turned away and ignored and we started collecting more enemies!!

New Yorker   June 15th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

Desiree Jordan – Cheney is not yet arrested for war crimes because he didn't commit any. Stop listening to the jerks who can't tell the difference between a terrorist and a patriot.

paul – You must know by now that liberals live by a double standard. Cross over and join the people who know what the reality is. The liberals will destroy this country if they can.

Chipster   June 15th, 2009 3:24 pm ET

Dick Cheney is frightened by his own shadow. He'll always see 6 more weeks of winter – nuclear winter. I've never seen anyone so paranoid in my life and his favorite pastime is trying to make everyone else as afraid as he is. Cheney certainly hasn't made our nation more secure. He's the poster boy for Al Qaeda. Cherry picking and fabricating intelligence to support his obsession with Saddam Hussein has cost the lives of thousands of our soldiers and destroyed the lives of tens of thousands. He managed to defeat truth, justice, and the Constitution for too long. It will take decades for our nation to recover.

Tom in CA   June 15th, 2009 3:24 pm ET

Old man Potter is praying for it to happen!

rice, bryan   June 15th, 2009 3:20 pm ET

to utter such words, and wishing this upon this country should be held in high treason. this was the party platform for eight years. why would anyone want to see this happen to prove a point. to wish this upon the citizens of this country is crazy.

republicans hate america   June 15th, 2009 3:20 pm ET

its no surprise the rush limbaugh party hate this country they want it to fail so dim wits like them can run the dim wits that believe them. As to criticizing government run programs I suppose we should just get rid of our military too seeing that must be so dysfunctional being run by the government its a matter of time before chevez comes strolling in. you right wingers have no clue...none

ANNY   June 15th, 2009 3:20 pm ET

I think it's the other way around I think it is Cheney that is making American less safe...not just when he was in the VP office but even now....he had his 8 years in office it is time for him to back off and let this new administration run this country. Cheney like Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, Newt, Palin and all the other Republicans in Washington would love to see President Obama fail so they could say I TOLD YOU SO it is they that are putting this country in danger and we the people of this country are not blind to their tactics anymore, that is why they lost this election and why they will continue to lose.......they are not only going to bring on the terrorists around the world but the ones right here in this country (the White Sepremeists) the GOP becomes more scary with each passing day

Hal   June 15th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Cheney is a man of little or no personal character!!

He sold guns to the Iranians, he hid his assets from KBR and Haliburtion in the Caymen Islands, his company did such shoddy work in Iraq that dozens of soldiers have died. He ran administration that ignored the warnings regarding 9/11.

This guy prays every night jst like Rush that this country gets attacked so they can spout their fear-mongering, torture excusing rhetoric.

Go back to shooting caged birds you creep!!

Not Christian/Not Patriotic/Not Civilized/Not right!!

New Yorker   June 15th, 2009 3:18 pm ET

Dick Cheney, regardless of what the liberals want to imagine, has helped to keep this country safe. I' am glad that he has the wisdom and maturity to speak out about Obama's folly. I applaud him for taking the time to express his vies and continue to work for the good of the U.S. If Obama continues with his plans we will be in worse shape than ever before.

David   June 15th, 2009 3:17 pm ET

This man seriously needs to be put on the Terrorism watch list, if he's not already there. Wishing harm to come to America with no concern whatsoever for the American people, with his previous access to classified security information, makes him a very, very dangerous man.

Fair is Fair   June 15th, 2009 3:15 pm ET

I think any American accusing another American of wishing such a thing is totally disgusting.

Panetta – do yourself and us a favor. If you really feel this way, keep it to yourself instead of making it a partisan talking point.

MJR53   June 15th, 2009 3:15 pm ET

I apply a new litmus test to all reporting such as this. Where it says a Republican's name, I insert the name of a prominent Democrat. Where it is a Democrat's, I insert a Republican's name. I then mentally harken back to the time of the Bush administration and think if the talking heads would have been in an uproar. They're not in an uproar today, ergo it is slanted journalism

bozo obama   June 15th, 2009 3:15 pm ET

Closing Gitmo...Obamas promise 'join al-queda and see the world with a special vacation in Bermuda' with taxpayers money.

Natasha   June 15th, 2009 3:15 pm ET

Shame on you CNN
So below the belt, unprofessional and un-thoughtful comments from Panetta and you repeat them with satisfaction.
The scary part – it shows how unready and not smart Panetta is.

meg   June 15th, 2009 3:13 pm ET

should cheney b in jail for torture how much $$ has he made from iraq and he did not keep usa safe for 8 years, sept 11 happened under his administration. Stopping 9/11 would have given him credibility. War criminals should be in gitmo.

RealityKing   June 15th, 2009 3:13 pm ET

More tabloid news from CNN.

How about something important for a change. Like what current government healthcare actually provides and what it would look like under Obamacare??

The Associated Press has learned that fewer than half of Veterans Affairs clinics given a surprise inspection last month followed proper standards for colonoscopies and other minimally invasive procedures — even after the agency learned that mistakes may have exposed thousands of veterans to HIV and other diseases.

Dawn in Pa   June 15th, 2009 3:12 pm ET

He said what everyone else may be thinking... saying on every news shows, except MSNBC who would listen.... and yes I believe it.

DAVID   June 15th, 2009 3:09 pm ET

Couldn't he just create/mastermind another 911?

paul   June 15th, 2009 3:09 pm ET

During his tenure in the Bush administration anyone who spoke out against them was labeled UNpatriotic. And we all screamed it was our RIGHT to voice our opinion. NOW, he is out of office and he is SPEAKING out against what he feels is the wrong direction. BUT now we are saying he is being unpatriotic.

PLEASE people, let him speak. Let me speak. Let us all speak. Freedom is one thing we, as Americans, have that MOST people do not! I do not see his words as a CALL TO ARMS for an attack. I see them as his RIGHT TO SPEAK HIS MIND.

I am a democrat.

demwit   June 15th, 2009 3:09 pm ET

Take note people, Obama's team thinks free speech invites terror attacks.

Desiree Jordan   June 15th, 2009 3:06 pm ET

Why is Cheney not arrested yet for War Crimes?
