(CNN) – A CIA spokesman is sharply downplaying Director Leon Panetta 's recent comments that appear to question whether former Vice President Dick Cheney is hoping for another terrorist attack against the United States.
"The Director does not believe the former Vice President wants an attack," CIA spokesman Paul Gimigliano said in a statement to CNN. "He did not say that. He was simply expressing his profound disagreement with the assertion that President Obama's security policies have made our country less safe. Nor did he question anyone's motives."
The statement comes days after the New Yorker published an interview with Panetta during which he said Cheney's recent criticism of Obama – including the decision to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba – show the ex-vice president "smells some blood in the water on the national security issue."
"It's almost, a little bit, gallows politics," said Panetta. "When you read behind it, it's almost as if he's wishing that this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point."
Cheney's office released a terse statement from the vice president Monday responding to the comments, saying "I hope my old friend Leon was misquoted."
"The important thing is whether or not the Obama Administration will continue the policies that have kept us safe for the last 8 years," Cheney said.
Vice President Joe Biden also appeared to distance himself from Panetta's comments Sunday, telling NBC "I don't question [Cheney's] motive."

I agree with Panetta – and so do most other people I know, both Republicans and Democrats. Panetta should not back-pedal on this one. The Democrats usually allow the Republicans bully them into back-tracking on the truth when they tell it. Cheney absolutely wants the US to be attacked. This makes more sense. The CIA is correct, no body wants another attack on the US, especially not Cheney and definitely not President Obama. DIck Cheney is saying some controversial things and even though I do not always agree with him, I do think we need to have a discussion about how safe we are and how the policies of the Obama administration affect our safety. I would rather debate the issues (memos, photos, gitmo) rather than have us attack each other. Bringing these discussion up to the public is the right thing to do and we should be happy Cheney is doing it. Why isn't anyone else talking about this?

1. Bush and Cheney didn't 'keep you safe" . September 11 was nine months into their term and they ignored warnings. Whether the planning happened during Clinton's term or not, the event happened well into the Bush Term.
2. You weren't safe before 9/11 and you aren't safe now. Safety is relative – you are still more likely to die on the commute home and you get in your car everyday. The UK has been attacked, Spain has been attacked and as much as you may think Bush/Cheney stopped everything, I think you can safely assume if the terrorists want to they will hit the US. All you can hope is that the attacks will remain relatively small.

Let's get real about politics. Of course Cheney is setting the stage to be able to point the finger and say, if an attack occurs, "You should not have changed our policies." With the obvious implication that any change in policy was the reason that the attack occurred. Cheney makes the assumption that his policies kept the country safe for eight years. Who knows? It is pure conjecture. And, some of the Cheney's policies created more danger for the US, and more likelihood of attack. Cheney really hasn't made any comments or suggestions, this year, that would actually help protect this nation. All he said was Obama is making this country more vulnerable to a terrorist attack and cited the release of the CIA memos that were ordered by a court to be released after the government lost a lawsuit. And Cheney defended the use of torture.
If these are ideas or beliefs that you value then you really ought to move to the Middle East. Anywhere over there really, because those governments don't follow court orders, and believe in torture, actually now that I think about it, that's EXACTLY like the government Cheney represents. Enjoy.

CNN's continued placement of a headline suggested former Vice President Dick Cheney is "rooting" for another terrorist attack is reprehensible (we're looking at 24 hours now CNN.com editors). The CNN news outlet (if we can even still call it that) can be counted on to have one piece of anti-conservative commentary or Ticker "news" prominently displayed daily along with a puff piece about Obama or his family daily. Rarely can any investigative news reporting (Twitter wars with the host of Punk'd) or truly thought provoking commentary be found here (Cafferty anyone?). Unfortunately, both Fox News and MSNBC are equally reprehensible... No wonder people are getting their news from the blogs these days.
We do not know what former VP Cheney is thinking, but we do know he is a psychopath. We know he likely was involved in criminal activities and that there is an investigation going on that he would like to block as much a possible. We know that at this same relative point in time when he and Bush first took office that the 9/11 attacks did not yet occur, and that the Bush administration was asleep at the helm when it did occur. . I don't think Cheney is so much wishing for another attack as just hoping to be right, even if the consequences could be deadly for some. If you look at what he's been saying over the past few weeks and months, his statements are mostly assumed, for instance, his allegations that the Obama administration's nation security policies, specifically the choice to close down Gitmo, is making this country less safe from terrorists. I think I'll side with the director of the CIA rather than a bitter old man from the Bush administration when it comes to deciding what is best for this country.
When he mentioned that he does not think anywhere in the U.S will take the Guantanamo detainees and that it would not be a good idea to house former detainees in America, especially that people that are actually convicted of terrorism, not just suspected terrorists, he was just a little wrong. If the unimprisoned populace of the U.S hate terrorists... well, why won't the people in prisons across the country also hate them? I think we all know what happens in prisons these days.
I'd like to see him get his day ion court with W over their war crimes and lying to the American people, killing thousands of our troops, killing hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, and spending us into a hole. I think they figured if they could break the country, entitlements and wants for solutions for healthcare and education would go away from necessity. 3.....Information can be obtained from terrorists without torture and inflicting pain. Medical science has drugs that can be safely administered to elicit truth. Why is it necessary to Torture?
4.....Very few of the Guantanamo Detainees were arrested from inside the US. They were captured from Iraq, Afghanistan or other places. Terrorist attacks in US happen from inside the US. We need a better homeland security rather than going after terrorist all over the world. We need to prevent infiltration. What did the Bush Administration do to prevent infiltration?

So why would Cheney expect the current administration to have greater respect for his warnings than he did for his predecessors'?

Cheney does want U.S. to be attacked again. His administration was in charge during the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history, yet he claims the steps his government took "made us safer". They prefer to blame Clinton for Sept. 11, and take credit for the fact there hasn't been an attack since 9/11. But if an attack happened tomarrow it would be Obama's fault, according to Cheney (keep in mind, Cheney has been out of office 5 months, Sept. 11th happened 9 months after Bush took office). Long story short, if we stay safe, Cheney will take credit. If there's an attack, he'll absolve himself of responsibility and say "I told you so".

Demographic wise, the GOP is shrinking, the wise thing to do would be to refocus on how badly they went astray and fix their own issues before coming out and trying to control policy now, they simply aren't trusted by the majority of American people anymore.

This is perhaps one of the stupidest statements ever...and here is why:
Saying that Cheney wants a terrorist attack, is like saying that a scientist who wants to see green house gas emission changes wants global warming to happen....no, he doesn't want that and that is exactly the point, he doesn't want it so much that he is willing to speak out if he believes we are doing something wrong. What prize do you get for saying global warming is real when the whole planet freezes? The exact same reward Cheney would get if he continues to call into question the Obama administration's actions and a terrorist attack happens...absolutely nothing.

Panetta may not question his motives, but I certainly do. I question his motives, his methods, his integrity and at times, even his sanity.
The only thing good about him is the word FORMER whenever anyone refers to him now. Good Riddance.
Former VP Cheney is getting too much attention in the media and too much time in the public discourse. All he has done is repeat what he has been saying for the past 8 years. And the Adminsitration's actions, and blatent misrepresentations, trying to justify the 2nd Iraq War, seriously damage the former VP's credibility. The sooner we hear less reporting on the Cheney "broken record", the better.
Yes... it is true. I must admit that I differ with the administration on both their economic and national security policies. Nor do I believe that the prior Vice President was a war criminal or wants the country to be attacked just to prove his point. I also think that only a simpleton would be more concerned with domestic terrorism than islamist terrorism. There is far greater probability of the Obama Administration and a democratic majority spending us into oblivion and lowering our childrens standard of living than domestic terrorism materializing and magically surpassing Al Quaeda as a threat.
All of these admissions ofcourse must surely mean that I secretly would like the country to be attacked just to make my point.

Oh please !!! Cheney, Limbaugh and the rest of the right wing and a lot of Republicans want President Obama to fail period. Yes it seem horrible to think Cheney would want this to happen but listen to the comments Cheney has made and the way he says what he says. Listen to right wing radio and listen to what they say. Unfortunately when you say the things a lot of us has heard Cheney say , when you hear the things that Hannity, Limbaugh, Beck, Gibson and the rest say what other conclusion can you come up with? It is very rare to hear any Republican/conservative or right winger say anything positive about President Obama.

Cheney and his cronies have made millions (Halliburton – mismanagement and profiteering during a time of war) from marketing the threat of terrorism and fear of terrorist attacks to the American people.
So, why would it be so farfetched to think that he would want something to happen just so he could go on a media blitz justifying his positions. I pray that nothing will happen and that America will be safe from the hate fanatics, both domestic terrorists and international terrorists.
People or media that portray Vice President Cheney as hoping for an attack are downright idiotic!!! Like him or not, and I do, he has dedicated most of his adult life to the safety of this country and the people within it. . So, you cannot call Cheney an enemy combatant becausehe has not raised a gun and fired against americans. Of course, he has fought the enemy unlike the presidential community organizer. This attitude of Obama to merandize and no enemy combatant label just shows how ignorant he is to national security. He has a CIA chief with no experience and the great Obama was not privy as a senator to material of threat to national; security. We already see how much North Korea and Iran respect him...NOT. Do I feel safe...no! Isn't it better to have evil who knows evil. Some day Obama will learn what Cheney already knows about pre and post 9/11 along with the rest of the citizens.
