Former President Jimmy Carter arrives in the Ezbet Abed Rabbo district of Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip.

(CNN) - Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said Tuesday on a visit to Gaza that he had to "hold back tears" when he saw the destruction caused by the deadly campaign Israel waged against Gaza militants in January.

Carter was wrapping up a visit to the region during which he met representatives of all sides of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Among the sites he visited was the American school that was destroyed by the bombings Israel initiated in response to rocket attacks launched from Gaza into southern Israel.

"It is very distressing to me. I have to hold back tears when I see the deliberate destruction that has been raked against your people. I come to the American school which was educating your children, by my own country.

"I see it's been deliberately destroyed by bombs from F16s made in my country and delivered to the Israelis. I feel partially responsible for this - as (do) most all Americans and Israelis," Carter said at a news conference.

"The only way to avoid this tragedy happening again is to have genuine peace," he added, pointing out that many Palestinians are now fighting each other in the West Bank and Gaza because of their affiliations with Hamas or Fatah.

"It's very important that Palestinians agree with each other, to cooperate and stop attacking each other and to build a common approach to an election that I hope to witness and observe next January the 25th."

After the briefing, Carter headed to a graduation ceremony for students who completed a human rights curriculum provided by UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.

"The human rights curriculum is teaching children about their rights and also about their responsibilities," Carter said in his speech to graduates.

In his speech to graduates, Carter said bombings, tanks and a continuing economic siege have brought death, destruction, pain and suffering to Gaza. "Tragically, the international community largely ignores the cries for help, while the citizens of Gaza are treated more like animals than human beings."

"The responsibility for this terrible human rights crime lies in Jerusalem, Cairo, Washington, and throughout the international community," Carter said.

After meeting with Hamas leaders, Carter said, "The Hamas leaders want peace and they want to have reconciliation not only with their Fatah brothers but also eventually with the Israelis to live side by side.

I swear some of you people that blog here have no common sense or decency. This man is one of our previous Presidents, just like both Bush's, Clinton and Reagan, and he should be respected not insulted. He is no longer the active President so just leave him alone and grow up. He's done more with his life and for the good of the county then I'm sure you have.

Steve (the real one)   June 16th, 2009 3:15 pm ET

Exactly how many tears did he hold back for al the rockets Hamas sent screaming into Israel or doesn't that count? He taught Sunday School! He should know who that land belongs to! Sorry, I don't believe "most" Americans feel guilty. Yes Israel is plied American military hardware but where is all these Hamas rockets coming from and are their suppliers feeling guilty? Highly doubt it! Don't fire rockets and you won't get bombed! Pretty simple! I don't dislike the Palestinian people but their own leadership is destroying them! Neither Hamas or Fatah wants true peace with Israel!

Carter = worst president ever!! Why is he even there?

Carter---go back to your peanut farm......   June 16th, 2009 3:12 pm ET

Every time the Palestinians launch rockets into Israel, they are going to get more of the same.....

Debra Austin, Texas   June 16th, 2009 3:11 pm ET

Sorry folks, Israel never instigated bombing of Gaza. After Israel, pulled its settlers out of Gaza, to much pain for those Israelis, Hamas started shelling Israel. So if peanut breath is so sorry for the destruction, perhaps he could tell his good pals in Hamas, not to shell Israel, and they would not have their schools bombed. What a rocket scientist idea. And for those who blame Israel 'for not doing what they promised', go get some brains. When your country is attacked, it will respond. Don't expect Israel to take the rocket attacks without response. Pathetic arguments for you who are anti-Israel.

BabaLou   June 16th, 2009 3:08 pm ET

Carter was loser back in the day and still is. Why doesn't he talk about the killing of innocent people by Hamas and other militant Palestinians ? Why not discuss that they want to wipe Israel off the map and that they dseny the Holocost happened ? Neither side has right to kill innocent people, but let's get hte truth out of his mouth. If it wasn't for GW Bush Carter would have been our worst President ever.

liberals are lemmings   June 16th, 2009 3:02 pm ET

its pretty funny how everyone in the us just thought it was so terrible when israel went into gaza after thousands of rockets where launched from there into israel. Yet how many rockets do you think the us would allow to strike our soil before we reacted.

vegage   June 16th, 2009 3:01 pm ET

It is sad that the USA press is not paying attention to what is happening in Gaza. International press is being blocked to enter Gaza because the Israelis don't want the World to know how deplorable conditions Gazans are living due to the horrible things Israel are doing to this poor people. It is time to Israel to return the occupied lands in the 7 days war and make peace with Palestinians. Those lands do not belong to Israel and should be returned. And I think the American press needs to get involved and present to the American people the two sides of the coin, because the is not such thing that Israelis are the good guys and Palestinians are the bad guys.

I can hardly hold back the tears .....(of anger)..... every time Jimmy Carter opens his mouth. Please Mr. Carter do not speak for me in any way. I do not feel responsible for the bombing of the school ..... Those launching missiles and, as I recall, launching them from the school into Israel are responsible. I hope "time" will soon shut this man up.

Chris - Seattle   June 16th, 2009 2:55 pm ET

Israel's policies toward Palestine suck and anybody that thinks differently is prejudice, racist & bigoted. For example any Joe Blow can shot a rocket at them, regardless if you're an extremist from Hamas, Hezbollah or New Jersey and they're gonna bomb the crap out of Gaza. This planet and every inch of land on it belongs to God and we're placed here to be good stewards of it, which we(humans) suck at, I'm starting to think maybe we should let one of the many countries that want to wipe Israel of the face of this planet have at it!!!

Anon   June 16th, 2009 2:50 pm ET

After meeting with Hamas leaders, Carter said, "The Hamas leaders want peace and they want to have reconciliation not only with their Fatah brothers but also eventually with the Israelis to live side by side.

What Hamas did Carter meet with? The same Hamas that has repeatedly stated they will NEVER agree to Israel's right to exist? The same Hamas that has continually fired rockets into Israel?

I agree that there is plenty of blame to go around between Israel and the Palestinians. I do not personally believe that Israel is totally in the right, they've been pretty wrong as well. But come on to come out say something like that about Hamas, is Carter going senile?

Are there still questions about the similarities between former President Carter and President Obama?
I wonder if Hamas feels partially responsible?

"After meeting with Hamas leaders, Carter said, "The Hamas leaders want peace and they want to have reconciliation not only with their Fatah brothers but also eventually with the Israelis to live side by side."

Ummm, Mr. Carter, Hamas violently overtook the Gaza Strip and have been firing bombs into Israel every day. They also have in their charter that they won't recognize Israel. Any chance these might be just two of the thousands of reasons that the rest of the world sees Hamas for what it is...a bunch of terrorists and killers?

S Callahan   June 16th, 2009 2:12 pm ET

Oh boy..here it goes.
CNN can attest by my past blogs I have respect for former President Jimmy Carter.....but....this comment is instigative....I think for it to be fair the former Presdient needs to also take a trip to Israel and visit the victims of bombings there. This is why the world MUST find a peaceful solution. There is no good for acts of this kind for any side.

Just My Opinion in Texas   June 16th, 2009 2:07 pm ET

Former President Carter is a bitter old crank who hates Israel almost as much as the Palestinians do. His opinions, while he is perfectly entitled to them, are simply wrong.

Proof of what I say is that some months back (Within the past year.), several staffers at his library quite because of his frequent rants against Israel at the library and the staffers viewed said rants as unseemly.

As to the destruction in Gaza ... Israel would never have lifted a finger against it had Hamas not hidden behind the skirts of the women in Gaza to launch their missles against Israel.

If an enemy lauches weapons against a sovereign nation, said nation is FULLY entitled to defend itself. Period.

jimbo   June 16th, 2009 2:06 pm ET

It's a shame that Carter has become the frontman and clownface for HAMAS terrorists. During his administration, he presided over the debacle of the Iranian Revolutionary Regime holding hundreds of American hostages for a year, and then for a ludicrous botched attempt by a few faulty helicopters to "invade" Iran.

The result is the chaos and madness you see today in Iran. Good timing.

Carter was such a failure in foreign and domestic policy, he is a sad face, and makes me want to cry too.

Tommy   June 16th, 2009 2:05 pm ET

Well, I can see the talking heads on Fixed news and CNN now lambasting the former president for his views. Just like the ignorant statements they made over his book on Palestine last year.

I mean, just think about it. Whom do you believe knows more on this issue? Jimmy Carter – a former president who has visited the region and talked with its leaders for decades? or Hannity / O'Reilly / Blitzer / Dobbs / etc. The talking heads say the crap they have to say to stay employed. They have sponsors after all.

I believe that if the Israeli's believe they can do what they want in this process, then let them. But at the same time, we cut ties. How can we be so closely allied to an entity that causes so much suffering in the region? How can we be so closely allied when they act so duplicitously? C'mon people, THINK!

true daughter of the american revolution   June 16th, 2009 2:04 pm ET

another case of throwing money down the toilet. nothing will change as long as we continue to support this type of situation.
left to their own devices, with no money for weapons, i'll bet a lot of violence would stop and people would have to work together.
but as long as we continue to supply arms and weapons, they will continue to be used.

Reformed Republican   June 16th, 2009 2:04 pm ET

Sorry Jimma, I don't feel at all responsible and it's high-handed and sanctamonous of you to say such a thing on America's behalf.
The terrorists on the Gaza strip got what they deserved for sending rockets into Isreal and killing women and children. If you would have done the same thing to Iran that Isreal did to Hamas instead of letting the mullahs walk all over you when you were POTUS the middle east would be a much safer, stable place today.
Don't go preaching your fundamentalist evangelical whinings at me...

Jimmy Carter, the President who destroyed the American economy and humiliated out country with his foreign policy failures is now a bleeding heart for the terror enclave of Gaza which mercilessly bombed Israeli towns and finally got a well deserved punch in the face.

"I feel partially responsible for this — as (do) most all Americans and Israelis," Carter said at a news conference.

Speak for yourself. You don't speak for "most all" Americans and Israelis. Why don't you place the blame where it belongs – on Hamas. Our country would be better off if you and your kind would defect to some left-leaning, terrorist-loving country. I'm sure France would love to have you.

Jenn, Philadelphia   June 16th, 2009 1:54 pm ET

We can hope that President Carter's words will, in the end, inspire a frank and undistorted discussion of the "ethnic cleansing" that is at the heart of hardline Isareli policy and, if I might add, the anathema of Judaism or any group that professes love of humanity but views "the other" as less than human and therefore not worthy of consideration.
God help the Israelis who are in the thrall of fear and forgive their leaders. In the end, countries–like people–are held accountable for their deeds by the same and only God, whether it is Israel, Iran, Iraq, Cambodia, Chile, etc. etc.

Mr. Carter is a doddering fool if he think Hamas is interested in peace.
They, like the vast majority of the Arab world, are interested in the annihilation of Israel. I'm not defending Israel, but they do have the right to defend themselves. The persistent rocket attacks by Hamas required a response – Israel pleaded for the attacks to stop and they did not – if Canada was raining explosives down on Buffalo or Detroit,
would Mr. Carter criticize the U.S if we were to take action to stop it ?

Jimmy the Greek   June 16th, 2009 1:52 pm ET

Hey Jimmy (carter), why don't you just stay in Gaza and help build houses.

Here's a little CLUE for you... if Palestinians would STOP the rocket attacks, suicide bombers, and kidnapping of Israeli soldiers... the people in Gaza would have NOTHING to fear.

Carter is a terrorist tool!

neuroperson   June 16th, 2009 1:51 pm ET

Carter is a demented old racist and anti-semite.

I didnt even know Palestinians went to school, I thought they were too busy throwing rocks at Israeli tanks! Maybe the "school" wouldnt have been bombed if it were really a Hamas Terror Camp that was funded by the UN.

Heres how to achieve peace in the Mideast.
1) Hamas stop bombing Israel.
2) Israel stops having to defend itself.
3) Wow that was incredibly easy.

Peggy - TX   June 16th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

Former President Carter is a good man and here espouses sound reasoning in the face of tragedy caused by Israel’s irresponsible handling of the money and bombs we negligently continue to give them. I do not believe the hard-liners that control Israel ever wanted peace and the US, in the interest of our national security, needs to immediately stop, 100% stop, all support of either side in this conflict. We have out own problems and can not afford to send $ that way. Let the local countries with greater national interest in the results, sort it out.

"Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called children of God."
(Matthew 5:8 NAB)

Attack first, ask questions later...and this is the result. Those bombings scared the country and its people forever... Now its time to feel remorse for what happened? Genuine peace is the way to go, but i believe under God, we will find endless peace if everyone would just seek Him ^_^

God Bless

As someone who used to admire Carter for his measured and objective approach to issues in the Middle East, I am appalled by his ignorance when stating that "Hamas leaders want peace..." etc. While I agree that Israel is far from blameless, to actually think that Hamas, who has reiterated their desire to see Israel wiped off the face of the world map numerous times, desires to "live side by side" with Israel, is pure fabrication and propaganda. The fact that Carter, an elder statesman and past President, is promoting this kind of drivel, is shameful and disgusting.

Well well Jimmy, if the Palestinians like what you're saying, how come they wanted to assassinate you?

Fair is Fair   June 16th, 2009 1:38 pm ET

Carter, you're a dork.

Since Israel became a nation in 1948, she has had to defend herself from attack countless times.

NEVER ONCE did she start the hostilities. But she finished them EVERY time. Successfully. Which is a lot more than you can say about your wonderful hostage rescue missions.

And now you want to take Hamas off the list of terrorist organizations? Here's a dollar, Jimmy – go buy a clue. Israel is our only ally in this volatile part of the world.

Why don't you just go away quietly?

NEWS
1. U.N. Names Bill Clinton Envoy to Haiti.
2. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter on a visit to Gaza.

When will we see George W. Bush visiting other Countries?
If so, All Media Journalists there will be invited bare feet, without Shoes. :P

J.P.   June 16th, 2009 1:37 pm ET

Why is this dangerous, old, terrorist-appeaser still in public?

Jimmy, buddy, isn't it time you went away to a nice home and pooped yourself?

Gazans and "Palestinians" will be treated like humans when they stop firebombing pizza parlors for the crime of "not being muslim."

Vegas   June 16th, 2009 1:37 pm ET

To be fair, he now needs to visit the areas on the Israeli side and witness the devastation caused by Hamas.

Someone should put this man in a nursing home and tell him to with all due respect, shut up and leave foreign affairs to others who may be a bit wiser than him! His failed presidency and his stupid foreign policy decisions put an end to peace and stability in the middleeast and everyone knows that he hails Hitler for what he was trying to do with the Jews! This man is a embarrasement to the United States and should be told to stay away!!

munchmom   June 16th, 2009 1:36 pm ET

Well, I guess apologizing is in the Dems blood! Good grief–leave Israel alone!! They are God's chosen people, and no matter what we all decide to do over there, in the end God will prevail and set up His Kingdom there, just as the Bible tells us. And Jimmy Carter should know that, considering he is a Christian and has been active in church his whole life.

franklin   June 16th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

Carter is an anti-Semite who has become an embarrassment to the US. He was one of the worst Presidents inn American history, a total failure, and is only interested in re-writing his pathetic legacy. He need to go home to Georgia and mind his peanut fields.

Peter   June 16th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

Jimmy Carter is a joke. How can you give any credence to cries for peace from a political entity that refuses to accept the state of Israel's right to existence?

Peter   June 16th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

Even if you didn't like him as a president....You must agree what took place in Gaza is horrible..
