Racist e-mail aimed at Obama raises hackles in Tennessee

(CNN) - The chairman of Tennessee's Democratic Party wants a Republican legislative aide fired for sending out a "reprehensible" e-mail depicting President Obama as two cartoonish white eyes peering from a black background.

Obama's image is in the last square of a collage containing portraits of the previous 43 U.S. presidents. Copies of the e-mail were posted on the Internet Monday.

Sherri Goforth, an administrative assistant to state Sen. Diane Black, R-Gallatin, has admitted she sent the e-mail May 28 with the title "Historical Keepsake Photo." She said, without elaborating, that she mistakenly sent it "to the wrong list of people."

According to the Tennessean, a Nashville newspaper, a note on the e-mail said it was paid for by the Tennessee Republican Party, but GOP officials denied that they produced it. Black chairs the Senate Republican Caucus.

I bet Obama doesn't come out whining and snivelling like Palin did on the whole Letterman thing. He's got more important things to focus on.....unlike Palin.

The Republican Party knows how to pick them. What list of people is it acceptable to send this behind close doors type of racism to??? Can someone answer that question.

This kind of behavior is what will put America backward when we're trying to move forward at least I thought we were after the past election. This is insulting to our President, our country and on the American people who are trying to put racist behind them. This person should be fired immediately no ifs, buts, or ands for that matter.

I can't believe that there is a 'right' list to send this e-mail to. That's a shame.

Tennessee is in strong competition with Alabama on exactly which state can wallow the longest in America's racist past.

    My money is on Tennessee.

the more things CHANGE, the more they remain the same. THis kind of racist vitriol doesn't surprise me in the least. She should be fired and all she has to say is that she sent it to the wrong email list? What gall. Fire her yesterday!

And the Repubs thought David Letterman's joke was in bad taste.

(Dale now braces for the onslaught of being called a "liberal" despite the fact that I am a moderate.)

What these people have forgotten is that it is ok to have differing opinions. I lived in Utah for a while and learned one huge lesson.....that even people who are nothing like me, politically or theologically can still be my friends....as long as we avoid those two topics. Human beings all share in the same loves basically and these bigoted rightwing, religious right people have forgotten that America is founded on the freedom to be different. They are so bent on hate and anger that they cannot see those things that bind us together as Americans...so bent on hate and bigotry that they cannot accept a man who wants only to make this country proud and sound again. Hate blinds a person.

"Is this indicative of what Senate Republicans think about our commander in chief?" YES! they just don't come out and say it. that is 1 reason they go against EVERYTHING President Obama is trying to do. they have to suggestions or solutions, they rubber stamped EVERTHING bush wanted. It is so sad. that people hate just because the color of ones skin. But is is slowly creeping out. How can this country ever come together with these hateful people?

Fire her. Why can they get away with all this, when Letterman has his feet to the fire because of a joke? And, who are the "right" people to send such trash to?

Of course people will run with this and say, "ALLrepublicans are racist." or "ALL whites are racists." Which in an of itself is a racist statement. Let me add, I find the email wrong. Very Wrong.

But I'm also sure that people who did not find the statement by Letterman toward a minor not involved in government offensive, WILL find this offensive.
