Racist e-mail aimed at Obama raises hackles in Tennessee

(CNN) - The chairman of Tennessee's Democratic Party wants a Republican legislative aide fired for sending out a "reprehensible" e-mail depicting President Obama as two cartoonish white eyes peering from a black background.

Obama's image is in the last square of a collage containing portraits of the previous 43 U.S. presidents. Copies of the e-mail were posted on the Internet Monday.

Sherri Goforth, an administrative assistant to state Sen. Diane Black, R-Gallatin, has admitted she sent the e-mail May 28 with the title "Historical Keepsake Photo." She said, without elaborating, that she mistakenly sent it "to the wrong list of people."

According to the Tennessean, a Nashville newspaper, a note on the e-mail said it was paid for by the Tennessee Republican Party, but GOP officials denied that they produced it. Black chairs the Senate Republican Caucus.

Are we surprised anymore? I'm sure President Obama knew this would be coming or has been going on since he became a serious contender for the Presidency. I'm glad it doesn't cost him any sleep at night. It doesn't change the fact that he IS the PRESIDENT of the U.S. and is well loved by a majority of the population here. Nothing these folk do can change that. If they don't like it, maybe they should go visit North Korea or Iran for a year or two. Geez....

This is very sad and disappointing. This woman is obviously a biggot who should not be allowed to work in the government in any capacity. You can rest assured if this was targeted at any Republican, the GOP would be screaming for blood.

How racist can you get? I live in Tennessee and it is an embarassment to our state to have people like that in it. I assure you that there is just a small minority of people who feel that way, I don't know any personally, but there are racists everywhere and it seems they all belong to the republican party.

They hide behind their "morals" and Christian values, when they are neither. I am a liberal, Democrat, Christian and I live as Jesus would want us too. Love one another. Not make racist jokes because you are angry we have a Black President. He is the best President in my lifetime other than Clinton. Bush II was the worst in history, he and Cheney shredded the constitution and denied rights that are guaranteed by the founders of our country. Then Cheney has the audacity to defend his actions. Bush and Cheney should be tried for war crimes.

And while you're at it CNN, why you did NOT report what the Pentagon has stated North Korea missiles is a THREAT to USA?

This racist email is NOT important. NOKOR missiles is IMPORTANT – that is a THREAT to our national security.

I guess you folks in CNN is waiting for your marching order from Hussein. He's still pandering what he gonna say, what kind of BS he gonna tell the American people.

Oh, but it sure isn't as bad as Obama making fun of Special Olympic athletes. That is for sure. Poor athletes poor everything they got into the games and our president dismisses them as jokes..

What a shame liberals are. If you want this giurl fired, I think Obama should be fired. Well, he should just step down as you can see he loosing everything his campaign "promised".

Ignorance runs rampant in the Republican party. Only reprimanded when she should have been fired. Guess they are too busy protesting David Letterman's remark which was NOT made by a politician representing the people of this country.

We are in the 21st Century people Racism is totally wrong....

You were offended about Sarah Palin and her family, rightly so, and I do not like her at all, but yet I sided with her, and I will read on these blogs and say we need to be thicked skin... You know Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me... Some people take offense of racial slurs and thinking it is totally funny, I don't...

So she sent it to the wrong list of people. I wonder who on her e-mail list are the right people who should have received racist e-mails. I am so tired of our polititians on both sides. The far left and the far right need to be put in their place by the majority of us towards the middle.

Until this type of right-wing hate is exposed for exactly what it is, nothing will change. Heads need to start rolling. So called free speech such as this and the gorilla comment from another southern right wing person should be the subject of large amounts of news coverage condeming these kinds of jokes. We get more gruff and subsequent outrage over the dumb Palin comment from Letterman than we do for this type of racist 50's style hate agenda against the president and first lady. What is wrong with the media?
