Tom Daschle will serve on the commission that will select this year's White House Fellows.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Months after withdrawing his name from cabinet consideration, Tom Daschle has finally landed a position with the Obama administration.

The White House announced Wednesday the former Senate Majority Leader would serve on the commission that will select this year's White House Fellows, along with the president's sister Maya Soetoro-Ng and 26 others. The fellows chosen will be given the the chance to work in the federal government and take part in discussions with leaders in the public and private sectors.

"The men and women of this commission embody what makes the White House Fellows program so special," Obama said. "These leaders are diverse, non-partisan, and committed to mentoring our next generation of public servants. I'm confident that they will select a class of White House Fellows that demonstrate extraordinary leadership, strong character, and a deep commitment to serving their country."

Daschle was under consideration for Secretary of Health and Human Services, but withdrew his name amid controversy over his failure to pay certain taxes.

Over 1,000 young people applied for the fellowship program. The commission will convene this week to pick 11-19 winners out of 30 finalists. Former Secretary of State General Colin Powell and retired U.S. Army General Wesley Clark are past participants in the program.

Perfect. Let's have a tax cheat choosing White House Fellows.

Please, someone make sure to count the silverware before Tom Daschle leaves.

TRUTH   June 17th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

Dashle is smart , he knows and said bush/cheney are bad for this country, and he lost his job as minority leader for being correct. Obama should give him a job for telling the truth before this country found out the destruction from bush/cheney. The gop is gone GO DEMS

@Ann June 17th, 2009 2:02 pm ET

and who is Maya Soetoro-Ng ?

The President's half-sister!

Ivan   June 17th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

To those who dream of any political candidate being so pure his/her crap doesn't stink, wake up. No one who is human can be completely without 'sin'. This is not a bible thumping comment, by the way.
So far the only man worth his salt is President Obama, who seems to have nothing to hide and has not been 'caught' committing any crime. This in spite of the terrible sharks circling around seeking to destroy him and his reputation. I don't like politicians generally, but we need to give up the notion that selected candidates MUST be totally clean.
Ain't no such animal!

munchmom   June 17th, 2009 3:20 pm ET

Well this speaks well of the continued excellent staffing of positions that the Obama administration is doing. Can he not surround himself with anyone but criminals who don't pay their taxes or have contact with slugs like Blago???? Give us a break, and quit pretending that we ALL approve of this administration's behavior!

Carole   June 17th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Thank goodness. Congratulations Mr. Daschle.

All the tax comments.....you can have two people do your taxes and both will come out with a different end result. This is getting pathetic how the Rethugs are.

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   June 17th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Does anyone know Soetoro-Ng's background? Besides being the president's half sister, what is her educational and professional background. Is she a doctor or nurse? If she is going to serve on a committee that is dealing with the reform/modernization of health care in the country, she should have some background in understanding it.

Neilz   June 17th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Oh goodie. Nobody better to mentor the leaders of tomorrow than a corrupt tax dodger and a liar.
I wonder how much he had to pay to get that post. It had to be cash. He certainly can't deliver any votes.
More Change We Can Believe In.

beverly   June 17th, 2009 3:11 pm ET

As usual, President Obama continues to choose "intelligence and brilliance" when selecting persons to work for the Administration. I am of the oinion Maya Soetoro-Ng is an awesome choice for this position. She, like Prseident Obama, is ver inelligent and is a person who will do exactly what the job requires, with honesty and hard work!

Baccus   June 17th, 2009 3:05 pm ET

What are her qualifications? Is she the "best qualified" or the "Best connected" which seems to be the hallmark for anything "Obama".

Claudia in Houson   June 17th, 2009 2:58 pm ET

Glad to know Daschle is back, he has so much more to offer.

Obama breaks another promise   June 17th, 2009 2:58 pm ET

Obama Obama Obama He has broken yet another campaign pledge by hiring this tax fraus and tax cheat. Obama promised us higher standards, but he has in fact demonstrated and practiced standards lower than Watergate and Nixon -- What a liar

Longhorn#1   June 17th, 2009 2:55 pm ET

OH MY GOSH! Ted Dashle is a Moron and not worthy of choosing anyone. Please get rid of this man and Pelosi.

America First   June 17th, 2009 2:51 pm ET

Congress...........PLEASE impeach obama.

Dave   June 17th, 2009 2:51 pm ET

Yeah, we knew he'd sneak you in somewhere. Can't figure if BO is paying people back or is he being ordered to by his puppet masters.

Steve (the real one)   June 17th, 2009 2:48 pm ET

He's baaaaaaaaack! Did I just read the panel is non-partisan? Is that serious?? I doubt it!

Elliebee   June 17th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

Wonderful, this program is really great program.

Kudos to President Obama.

RJN   June 17th, 2009 2:35 pm ET

So Tom will be on tour explaining how to get away with not paying your taxes, and then be rewarded on top of it all with a cabinet post.
Some role model he is!!!!

Great Job Obama you can pick them. This has nothing to do with paying for favors does it??????

John in Binghamton   June 17th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

Oh great!!! Wait, I don't care.

skyhawkdriver   June 17th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

Daschle non partisan??..right...neither is frank..kennedy..pelosi..kerry..ginrich..cheney..there is no such thing in this country

Hugo   June 17th, 2009 2:30 pm ET

Just when you thought this guy would crawl back under his rock here he comes again. A bribe is a bribe is a bribe is a political payoff! How about a position for him in the federal prison for tax evasion?

Rush Von Brunn   June 17th, 2009 2:25 pm ET

Now if we could just get Rush to pay his taxes on all the money hes hiding in offshore accts,we could fix the deficet in a week.Hes such a great American isnt he?

GOPer   June 17th, 2009 2:24 pm ET

Good move Obama. Further employing tax evaders and the privleged is one small step that will lead to the demise of the dems. Thank You

GaVoter   June 17th, 2009 2:24 pm ET

Apparently Obama is more like Bush than we thought.., massive cronyism isn't what I voted for.

louiedog   June 17th, 2009 2:12 pm ET

Will this crook ever leave Washington??? He was given his walking papers years ago and is still hanging around with his hand out...

phoenix86   June 17th, 2009 2:11 pm ET

More "change" that Obamabots "hoped" for.

The joke continues. 2010, then 2012 cannot come fast enough.

skyhawkdriver   June 17th, 2009 2:04 pm ET

Does this mean daschle finally paid his taxes??..it 's too bad the president has chosen not to bring in new people to help shape the future of our country..it is nothing but same old same old..where is the promised change mr president??

cedgar   June 17th, 2009 2:03 pm ET

Daschle is just like Pre. Carter. Go home your time is over.
This is what is wrong with our government! When they are done
they do not LEAVE, they just keep showing up like a bad penny!
We need new people not the same old people in Washington!
I m so sick of the good o boy system!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Daschle go home you are last years news.

Ann   June 17th, 2009 2:02 pm ET

and who is Maya Soetoro-Ng ?

The messiah is a fraud   June 17th, 2009 2:00 pm ET

His sister and this fraud that already got shot down once, must have been a nationwide search?

How about a story on his not being transparent about the white house guest list or the CBO saying that he is wrong (as usual) with his estimates on the health care programs cost?

This fraud in chief is the most "typical" Chicago style politician ever and you sheep bleat in unison how bahhhh, bahhhhh transparent and great he is, just like, well sheep.

Fed Up   June 17th, 2009 1:57 pm ET

Has he paid his taxes yet??

Reality Check   June 17th, 2009 1:56 pm ET

Nothing like good ole nepotism....

What ever happened to the aunt living in the US illegally....?

JK Ashburn, VA   June 17th, 2009 1:55 pm ET

Tom will be quite a role model. He'll be checking the tax status of all the applicants.

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   June 17th, 2009 1:53 pm ET

I would've rather had him Secretary of HHS.

Texas Teacher   June 17th, 2009 1:52 pm ET

I'm in Texas... a firm Republican state! And, everyone I talk to everywhere agrees with me completely! We want the agenda Obama is trying to bring about... in fact, we want him to go farther and quicker! We are THAT sick of the Republican Mess!

Texas Teacher   June 17th, 2009 1:52 pm ET

Just as long as these fellows are supporting the agenda of our President, which is our agenda, things will go along just fine!

Woe be it to anyone who forgets what brought us out in droves to vote for and support Barack Obama!

Val in MA   June 17th, 2009 1:51 pm ET

The tax cheat still landed a position at the White House... Unbelievable! Only in Obama administration. Somehow he has to pay off the favors, right?

makesUwonder   June 17th, 2009 1:43 pm ET

Well well well, the crook gives the other crook a job. How nice!

Cassandra Washington   June 17th, 2009 1:41 pm ET

I think Obama is becomeing a FRAUD. Daschle was nominated to a position where he had taken hundreds of thousands of dollars from those who would benefit from his appointment, and yet, Obama continued to support him.

demwit   June 17th, 2009 1:40 pm ET

"These leaders are diverse, non-partisan, and committed to mentoring our next generation of public servants."

Once again, Obama's teleprompter makes him really, really silly...
