Sen. John Ensign Wednesday resigned his position in the Senate Republican leadership.
Sen. John Ensign Wednesday resigned his position in the Senate Republican leadership.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – A day after admitting to an extramarital affair, Nevada Sen. John Ensign has resigned his position in the Senate Republican leadership, a Senate GOP leadership source confirmed to CNN Wednesday.

Ensign was the head of the Republican Policy Committee, the fourth-ranking elected leadership position.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell released a statement saying “He’s accepted responsibility for his actions and apologized to his family and constituents. He offered, and I accepted, his resignation as chairman of the Policy Committee.”

Speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill Wednesday, Republican Sen. Jon Kyl, a good friend of Ensign, said the Nevadan still has a role to play in the party.

“He’s a very intelligent senator," Kyl said, adding, "John is a person of great faith. So I know this is a very, very difficult deal for he and his family."

Meanwhile Oklahoma Republican Tom Coburn, who shares a house with Ensign in Washington, said time will tell what his future role in the party will be.

"He’s a bright young man and lot of people make mistakes," Coburn said.

WOW, another Affair by a heterosexual politician!!!!!   June 17th, 2009 4:53 pm ET

hmmm, the Frank story coverage brings out every homophobic CNN reader to tap out a message....

well, here's one from a GAY FEMALE DEMOCRAT,
-paying taxes just like everyone else....
-raising a family like everyone else....
-going to church like everyone else...
-and to work every single day.

IT IS SICKENING how everyone is so hyped up over sexuality when heterosexuals make such obscene moves against their vows.

LET MY PEOPLE GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
we are all human.

James M. Holmes   June 17th, 2009 4:53 pm ET

This phony should resign from the Senate!

Let me be clear – I personally believe this whole "cheating" thing should be a personal issue between the parties involved… I don't think that politicians should resign per se over a personal issue…

But when you put yourself up on a "morals pedistal" and call for others like Bill Clinton and Larry Craig to resign when they did the exact same thing, but then you wont, then you are nothing but a HYPOCRITE!

Imagine that – a "holier than thou" hypocritical Republican? Ensign, you should take YOUR ADVICE and resign… From here on out, you have lost all credibilty and are making yourself and your party look even worse by setting a new standard of hypocracy!

Marty, FL   June 17th, 2009 4:52 pm ET

Samuel,

Extending compassionate benefits to those in need is ethical and moral–hate and hypocrisy are not.

mmg   June 17th, 2009 4:52 pm ET

Before all the slamming of the Republicans ...Let's not forget President Clinton and John Edwards.... Enough said!!!!

citizenjane   June 17th, 2009 4:48 pm ET

"John is a person of great faith. So I know this is a very, very difficult deal for he and his family." as quoted by John Kyl
-------------------------–

A person of great faith, is he? Doubtful at best. If anything, Ensign has shown himself to be a person of little restraint.

arc, Lugano CH   June 17th, 2009 4:47 pm ET

Infidelity is hardly a party issue.

While bloggers are calling each other names embroiled in a cyber-battle of one-upmanship, our elected officials of both parties are drinking beers together at McCormick and Schmick’s and talking, laughing it up and bragging about their respective extra marital affairs.

Old Republican and Democrat guys in nice suits eating oysters, drinking martinis with women half their age, while we bloggers are counting the days till our next paycheck like shmucks....

I feel rage!

Marty, FL   June 17th, 2009 4:43 pm ET

This unfortunately exasperates too much hypocrisy in the GOP and Sen. Ensign pushing their so-called "family/traditional values" onto to others for political purposes, while having their own indiscretions. What a sad fallacy.

pee wee   June 17th, 2009 4:39 pm ET

Oh, I see it all bery clearly now. The "more family values", and "oh, what Repuglican hypocrisy" crowds are out.

Are you lambasting him for the hypocrisy, the offense, or just because he has an R behind his name?

I suspect it is the latter of those three choices since most of the aforementioned groups fall deathly silent when those wanting to raise taxes at every turn fail to pay their current share.

Forget right and left, focus on right and wrong.

Samuel   June 17th, 2009 4:37 pm ET

This is not a big deal in today's world. The White House announces it will provide benefits for queer folks and this is news? Is it seems to be a requirement to be ethically, morally, and religously bankrupt in order to be a politician just look at our current president.

Jay for Jersey   June 17th, 2009 4:34 pm ET

I want a normal republican party made up of William F Buckley, Colin Powell and Ron Paul.

Do bad WFB is dead.

Steve J, Michigan   June 17th, 2009 4:33 pm ET

It wouldn't be such a big deal except for the fact that like most Repubs he's more then willing to preach his morality to the rest of us.... Are these guys just that arrogant of just stupid?

Steve-Michigan

Squigman   June 17th, 2009 4:33 pm ET

How did our nation become so judgmental. This man, a republican, made a mistake. He was very critical of Bill Clinton. Now is the time for all to see that it matters not what party they belong to, all politicians are nothing more than human, and need to be thought of as such. Not only are they subject to faults, they also make sure that they take care of their needs, before the American people are thought of. Wake up people. When was the last time you heard of your elected officals taking the same pay and benefit cuts that you have incurred? Not one time has this happened, and it never will. They've got it sowed, and they intend to keep it that way..

Bob   June 17th, 2009 4:29 pm ET

Carole said: "I hope this doesn't become political by the Dems"...LOL!!!Like the republicans didn't want Spitzer to resign, right?...Please go peddle your nonsense somewhere else........

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   June 17th, 2009 4:24 pm ET

You've got to love those good old Republican values.

Jim   June 17th, 2009 4:23 pm ET

Another Republican hypocrite who preaches family values then does the opposite. Rush is a convicted drug abuser, yet tries to tell Americans how to live their lives.

Rob   June 17th, 2009 4:22 pm ET

Of course if he was a Dem all you freaks on here bashing him and Republicans would be complaining about how this shouldn't be an issue. But once again, you libs play by different rules don't you.

Careful...your hypocracy is showing.

Carole   June 17th, 2009 2:55 pm ET

I am an Independent, and feel bad for the family. I hope this does not turn political by the Dems or Independent, aka Liberals and proud of it, groups.

It is like when a Black person commits a crime should all Blacks be embarassed? No.

ABDUR R AZAD   June 17th, 2009 2:52 pm ET

by his own declared standard, ensign is supposed to resign the senate seat. a man who betrayed his wife, violated spiritual promise can not be trusted. do you remembe- he called for president clinton's resignation?

GI Joe   June 17th, 2009 2:51 pm ET

Another religious right-wing nutjob hypocrit.

Good riddance. Maybe not elected again?????????

rick   June 17th, 2009 2:50 pm ET

he ought to be resigning the senate. he is a hypocrite. some traditional marriage supporter he is. gay couples who can't get married have been together longer than this jerk has been married and haven't cheated, but they aren't worthy of the rights he takes for granted.

btw, he wanted other republican cheaters to resign too.

Hypocrite   June 17th, 2009 2:50 pm ET

Ensign is the same guy who wanted Clinton to be impeached and the same guy who criticized and said he would never put himself or family in that position. He is a Christian Right guy who preaches one thing and does another.
I am tired of the politicians who throw stones and act mightier than God then caught with thier pants down.

jsilver2th   June 17th, 2009 2:48 pm ET

More of the same from the family values crowd-

Kentucky   June 17th, 2009 2:46 pm ET

Perhaps McConnell should explain the approximate 5 million to 25 million dollar gift from his wifes father who lives in Red China. McConnell would only disclose that the gift was between 5 amd 25 million dollars. Such disclosure. Mitch is a joke.

robertebob   June 17th, 2009 2:46 pm ET

Another savior of the Republican party bites the dust. He was a member of Promise Keepers and a champion of conservative family values. And now this. What a hypocrite.

Florida , for equal rights   June 17th, 2009 2:46 pm ET

i love it,,,,, a born again christian and a member of the Promisekeepers,,,,there you go again,,,trying to tell us all what to do and you cant even practice what you preach,,,,,,another 1 bites the dust LOL

LacrosseMom   June 17th, 2009 2:45 pm ET

I find it interesting that the far-right who would have crucified a Democrat has been so silent on the Ensign scandal.

This story about adultery just goes to remind us all, that NO ONE is perfect, not even the holier-than–thou-far-right!

NeverScared   June 17th, 2009 2:42 pm ET

Is this the same Ensign who demanded Clinton's resignation because of a little hanky panky???

I shocked!

GOP..........GRAND OLD PHILANDERERS

TX Jim   June 17th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

Another 2012 GOP hopeful bites the dust. It wasnt like he had a chance of winning but its looking like the GOP will be trotting out some sacrificial retread lamb to get slaughtered (Gingrich), or some bold idiot governor stupid enough to challenge him.

At this point Obama's 2012 electoral victory is at 200 EV and rising. Unless Palin runs then it may be 300-400.

Republicans Are Like Beauty Queens That Got Last Place, they cry...and their moms complain about the judges.   June 17th, 2009 2:40 pm ET

FUNNY...he fight tooth and nail against Gay Marriage....because of MORAL VALUES!!!!!!!

Let's see....in the 10 Commandments-ya know, GOD'S TOP 10 LIST.....

Adultry right at the TOP!!!!

Homosexuality....hmmmmm....nope....not even mentioned, didn't even make the list. In fact, it's even less important than using GOD'S name in vein.......

Republicans you are pathetic....as usual.....

Steve in Kentucky   June 17th, 2009 2:37 pm ET

I'm sure Rush Limbaugh will say this is all Obama's fault ... somehow.

Ken   June 17th, 2009 2:37 pm ET

Why are the GOP using double standards, when it was President Clinton, they couldn't even wait to IMPEACH him! Now it seems that they, the GOP, are supporting Ensign!

Ensign should resign as Senator and go home to fix his marriage.Ensign DOES NOT deserve to continue to be a Senator!

I am The Great and Powerful Wizard of Rush   June 17th, 2009 2:37 pm ET

So Ensign, who condemned Bill Clinton, Sen Craig, continues the republic party's time-honored tradition of utter and complete hypocrisy.

bob   June 17th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

There's a huge cesspool from which to select a replacement.

RJ- GA.   June 17th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

Just another Republican getting caught ! I at least give him credit for owning up to making a mistake. I wish more in his party would fess up to only supporting Big business and not the American citizens who were miss led into thinking they would be working for them !!!

Mary   June 17th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

Wow! you must be kidding. Not the Republicans. This is what the Democrats do. I am so sadden, because we have morals and convictions when it comes to family and marriage vows. Why would he ever cheat. What about his family? I feel for his wife.

Peter   June 17th, 2009 2:32 pm ET

Will he please resign?

demwit   June 17th, 2009 2:26 pm ET

Why apologize? Everyones doing it so there must be a biological reason for it.., right??

shane   June 17th, 2009 2:25 pm ET

And if this Was a democrat senator the extremists from fox news and( rush fatbaugh)would be all over it

jrzshor   June 17th, 2009 2:24 pm ET

having a affair is deemed bad, but running the country into the ground is OK?

Royster   June 17th, 2009 2:24 pm ET

Funny how the words 'he accepted responsibility for his actions' elicits full forgiveness from the GOP....yet if a Democrat says the same words, no forgiveness from the GOP.
It is OK if Letterman makes a joke about THIS???

louiedog   June 17th, 2009 2:16 pm ET

Ok John...Time to pack up and move back to Las Vegas....You still might get your old job back at McDonald's, But you will have to work your way back up to head "flipper"....That spot is taken..

Rob   June 17th, 2009 2:14 pm ET

Now if he was a Dem he would've have actually been give the leadership of an additional post.

Sadly though Sen. Ensign did not follow the John Edwards playbook.

Glenn Doty   June 17th, 2009 2:13 pm ET

Will he resign as a senator?

The GOP is really big on the idea that a person should not be in government if they had an affair... so will Ensign continue to represent the people of Nevada?

(It wouldn't even matter for the vote count, since Nevada has a republican governor, and would appoint a republican replacement).

Jefe   June 17th, 2009 2:13 pm ET

Any elected person caught in an extramarital affair should step down from their office entirely. If you can't be trusted to not cheat on your spouse, you certainly can't be trusted with our tax dollars or lives. Even though the extreme lack of family values is primarily a Republican problem, we've seen it on both sides. We need to sweep these amoral scumbags as far out of D.C. as possible.

sarah   June 17th, 2009 2:12 pm ET

I'm sure that he was either a deacon in his church, founder of a spin-off of Focus on the Family, or a fierce defender of "traditional marriage" or something similar – they always are. This is how they deflect criticism and attempt to elevate themselves in the eyes of God and the public, but HYPOCRISY shines brighter than a New Years ball at Times Square and I am glad to see this Charlatan outed.

Yossi Gestetner   June 17th, 2009 2:09 pm ET

In defense of the Senator from Nevada, let me say this:

according to reports, he was separated from his wife at the time of the affair. Is it Kosher from a religious standpoint? Certainly not. However, Senators are not our Church elders, and Ensign's act is therefore a far-cry of other REAL extramarital scandals we had in politics through the years, (mainly on the Democrat side).

From an entertaining standpoint, am taking the side of Ross Geller vs the Rachel Green in the reality show FRIENDS: they were on a break, and case closed. or as Ross would say: I WAS ON A BREAK!!!

Rich in Seattle   June 17th, 2009 2:08 pm ET

He needs to resign period. Where are the Republicans coming out against this guy? Don't they value marriage? Or are they keeping silent because they put party first over their own values?

The longer he stays in office, the more hypricritical the Republicans are.

Kyle, INDIANA   June 17th, 2009 2:07 pm ET

This Senator is a mouth piece for GOP lying and cheating. He has denounced Clinton and gay marriage while pretending he had the moral authority to do so. The conservative movement is dead.

Tony   June 17th, 2009 2:05 pm ET

I think this is an honorable move. Of course you will not find a Dem in leadership that would have taken this route. He did wromng. Admited it. Reconciled and now believes he should resign his post.

CHARACTER.

The Dems have none.

Judi Baller   June 17th, 2009 2:04 pm ET

Well well, another Republican hypocrite. Will wonders never cease.

RepubliKLANs Are Stupid As Stupid Does   June 17th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

This dimwit GOP Ensign senator need to take it a step further and resign from the senate!!!!! – his values of cheating on his wife and destroying the family lives of his campaign staff clearly does NOT represents the moral & family values the GOP supposedly "stands" for!

David   June 17th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

Karma is a Wonderful thing. Republicans have been rapidly self-destructing for the past two years. The hate they spread seems to manifest in their own personal lives.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the GOP recently turning the five pointed stars from the American flag, upside down on their logo.

It good to forgive, just as Christ forgive all mankind by dying on the cross for our sins   June 17th, 2009 1:59 pm ET

It is certian that what we do in secret (the dark) will come to light. This light is God. God knows all and sees all. We can not hide from his wrath..we are his creation. God knows us, just as we know our own children. We just haven't excepted that truth.

God also forgives those who earnestly seek him and truly confess from the heart concerning their sin. If God forgives, then we must do the same.

nom deplume, esq.   June 17th, 2009 1:59 pm ET

Too bad he wasn't a democrat; then it would be a job qualification.

FredinVa   June 17th, 2009 1:58 pm ET

So CNN spends the ink to talk about Ensign's affair but I haven't seen anything about the firing of Walpin, the IG who was investigating fraud against the agency that Michelle Obama's chief of staff is overseeing. A politician who has an affair should be of little concern to Dems as they have adopted this as appropriate behavior. But news of potential abuse of power was only news when Bush fired 11 AGs who worked at his discretion while the removal of an IG is supposed to go through Congress and the IG to be given 30 days notice. Go figure.

David S. Robins   June 17th, 2009 1:58 pm ET

Ensign is just another dishonest Republican scumbag like Gingrich, Livingston and Mark Foley. He should resign from the Senate now.

Jerk   June 17th, 2009 1:50 pm ET

LOL

Another self righteous republican scandalized, who would have thunk it??

Scott   June 17th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

Every one makes mistakes. Now let's hope the American public is more forgiving; and shows more grace and mercy than Republicans usually do, eh John...

GINA, OHIO   June 17th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

what a great set of values you have gop!!! i cant find one thing that i can idenify with the gop!! i think they that their party is becoming obsolete! time to roll with the changes! and you cant teach these old dogs a new trick!

Zion   June 17th, 2009 1:48 pm ET

Man, don't resign over this. So many men on capital hill have placed their pens in the wrong ink well until I don't even blink anymore. (Many just haven't been caught yet). Keep your position.

Esco   June 17th, 2009 1:47 pm ET

Another one bites it?! So many corrupt senators, it really makes you wonder how many more will pop out with bad news...

Ritas   June 17th, 2009 1:45 pm ET

Hope FOX and Limbaugh are jumping all over him, oh, did I miss something and they aren't covering this one!!!!

Fair is Fair   June 17th, 2009 1:43 pm ET

And resign is exactly what he should have done.

Now... maybe Senator Kennedy, D-MA, will come to his senses and resign as well. MA has been disproportionately represented in the senate for over a year now.

And Minnesota... why don't you get your act together and seat someone?

makesUwonder   June 17th, 2009 1:39 pm ET

Oh, the state owned liberal media just couldn't wait to get this story going regarding Sen. Ensign.

However, when Edwards was having a baby with another woman while his wife was fighting a life threatening cancer the only place the Edwards story could be found was buried somewhere in the middle of the paper at the bottom. And, if you blinked you missed the Edwards story.

Joanna   June 17th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

I could really care less about a member of the GOP, but who cares what one does in there personal life? It is NONE of my business!

Ensign Resigns GOP Leadership Post • CrazyDrumGuy   June 17th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

[...] you deserve all the extra attention that's paid to your personal life. John Ensign is learning this lesson the hard way: A day after admitting to an extramarital affair, Nevada Sen. John Ensign has resigned [...]

Irma in North Carolina   June 17th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

Well Mitch there is another good prospect along with Newt to run for president. They must be friends of Mccain and Edwards. Nice picks for president there.

Cal   June 17th, 2009 1:34 pm ET

No wonder the GOP is in such a mess!

No MORALS in that group or anywhere in Washington!

bozo obama   June 17th, 2009 1:33 pm ET

He deserves to resign for acting like a typical liberal.

Post always rejected by CNN   June 17th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

The governor of New York admitted responsibility, his wife forgave him, but the continual republican led outcry led to his resignation.

This creep says he won't resign..Even tho they both committed adultry it seems to me the republicans who whine and moan about the democrats must not be all that moral when it comes to supporting their familys and constitchants.

Melissa   June 17th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

Just more proof that the vaunted "Republican moral superiority" is a total lie.

Frank   June 17th, 2009 1:31 pm ET

What is a big mistake are those who consider all forms of perversion as acceptable – as someone in his 50's, I've seen advances made, for example, in the ending of racial segregation, and to end that policy was the correct thing to do, but not in this case, since the former was a matter of not denying someone equal rights based on the color of their skin.

In the latter, it would be condoning a lifestyle that has nothing to do with something as innocent as the race the person was born into, but is based on an immoral lifestyle – there needs to be a line drawn where no man should pass...

Grant from Denver, CO   June 17th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

Well I'll be darned. A Republican that did the right thing after he got caught. Not perfect, but at least it's a step in the right direction for the morally corrupt religious right.

Bob   June 17th, 2009 1:23 pm ET

Another one bites the dust. What happened to those "Values" The GOP constantly talks about ?

Claudia in Houson   June 17th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

McCain, Gingrich, Vitter and all the rest should go with him.

Gemma   June 17th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

Good for him. If it was anyone else he would be demanding they resign.

Dawn in Pa   June 17th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

Shame on you!!!!!

Another Republican with family values.

J.P.   June 17th, 2009 1:16 pm ET

Snore. If it's only infidelity, then he's fine, good-to-go... and should keep his seat.

Bill Clinton not only had an infidelity issue, but a position-of-authority issue with a subordinate... and then, to add insult to injury, PERJURED himself on top of it!

AND he still kept his seat as... wait for it... President.

I think Ensign is fine on this one.

southerncousin   June 17th, 2009 1:15 pm ET

Blame it on FOX news for telling the truth, every other scummy liberal does.

Sharon Kitchen   June 17th, 2009 1:15 pm ET
