President Obama back on the fundraising circuit

A glimpse of one of Obama's fundraising appearances as president.
A glimpse of one of Obama's fundraising appearances as president.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – President Obama will deliver the keynote address at a joint fundraiser tonight for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and its House counterpart, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee - the fifth time in six months he's used his presidential star power to boost his party's fundraising fortunes.

Since taking office in January, Obama has headlined two party fundraisers in the nation's capital, one in Beverly Hills, California, and another in Indianapolis, Indiana. While in Indiana, he also served as the main attraction at a fundraiser for that state's Democratic representatives. Last month, he gave the keynote address at a fundraiser in Las Vegas for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

As CNN reported earlier this week, sources familiar with the event say the dinner will raise around $3 million, which falls far short of a recent GOP congressional fundraiser headlined by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Spokesmen for the National Republican Congressional Committee and National Republican Senatorial Committee said $14 million was raised at that event, held earlier this month in Washington.

Still, the two fundraisers are difficult to compare because Democrats refused donations from registered lobbyists and political action committees for this dinner. Obama does not accept contributions from political action committees and lobbyists.

While lobbyists and their big bucks won't be around tonight, they and their personal donations will be welcome tomorrow morning at a Democratic event at the same hotel that is not subject to Obama's lobbyist restrictions.

One of the Democratic sources said that attendees at this week's fundraiser are primarily new donors, while the other source noted that the ban on lobbyist and PAC donations was a temporary measure for this dinner, and that those traditional contributors will continue to give to congressional Democrats.

Still, the sizable money gap raises questions as to why a popular president and the congressional Democratic majority were not able to pull in more money at a major fundraiser.

A year and a half before the 2010 midterm elections, the congressional campaign committees are aggressively seeking to raise money. In the latest Federal Election Commission disclosures, the DSCC was carrying a debt of $4.6 million with a cash-on-hand balance of more than $2.6 million; the DCCC was $7 million in debt, and had $4 million in the bank; the NRSC had $2.6 million in the bank and no debt; and the NRCC was $5 million in debt and had about $3.7 million cash-on-hand.

While the President speaks in prime time, Vice President Biden will kick things off earlier in the day, addressing the DSCC/DCCC fundraiser this afternoon.

I don't know why the Democrats left Obama alone to defend his administration and the Democrat's actions. The Republicans are all over the media singing Obama's and Democrat's song of destruction and it's beining to resinate among people with short term memory deficit. This is insane. Even Bill Maher who should not allow people forget what Bush did to this country is now beining to make Obama look like he caused all American problems when he actually inherited the worst possible government any one would have envisioned. Or may be America voted for a black man for a change only to now realize that he's as much a human being as any white man. By that I mean he has no magic huan or vodoo to quickly get us out of the mess we're in. It will take same steps a white man would have to get there.

Why not take this fundraising money and fix the deficit you're adding onto, Mr. President? You can only blame Bush for so long before common followers finally recognize that the bar graph after 4 years of you presidency will be 4-times more in the red than what Bush left you (that is, if your followers choose to actually read facts).

This kind of merges into that Bush ticker, but Bush's 1st bailout has now made it OK for Obama to buy the U.S. taxpayers, because Obama will always say, "Bush did it first!" without taking responsibility for his own actions from 2009 – 2013.

Please, take this money and pay off the deficit! Republicans too!

Obama doesn'taccept donations from lobbyist and PACS that is so laughable. half of them work for the adminstration. CNN don't try and gloss over the fact that he was the one that went back on his word during the campaign and accepting money from everyone and anyone.

Obama, or any President, should spend his time more efficiently than
running around the country, at OUR expense, to fundraisers.

Obama gets off on doing fundraisers. That the only place he can get get his ego stroked.

Doesn't Obama have some real work to do??? I guess public speaking really is the only thing he knows how to do, since he certainly isn't running the country very well.

Manipulating the media; buy the Union votes; selling access to lobbyists; giving billions away on pork; doing trillions in deficit spending to buy votes -- Obama offers us change all right -- the best government money can buy.

Poor Bush, still reading someone elses speech

Andre, you must be stupid or something, seeing as how this article is about Obama making a speech and not Bush. And your "Boy" Obama is absolutely lost without a telaprompter, so he also has problems readin his own speeches.

  11. Lori says polls will go up & down but Dems have nothing to worry about in 2010! Economic news is slowly getting better!

It's funny how you Republicans are saying President Obama is always fundraising and isn't doing his job but if that were true why are you Republicans constantly complaining about his policies? If he isn't doing anything then he wouldn't have policies for you to hate. So that makes NO sense! Also, if you think President Obama is a failure than why does he have higher approval ratings than your W Bush (and others) had at this exact time in his administration?

There isn't much point in squabbling with Fair is Fair or any of the other lame on the right. None of them are ever going to accept that their party created the mess that our current president is trying to correct.

Why do you think they are all such eager beavers in stirring up emotions?

This guy is a joke! Is he charming? Is he likeable? Is he a good talker... some may think so. However polls have shown that a majority are concerned where he is leading our country. Bush cured me of being a Republican... However conservatism is what this country needs, and this guy isn't bringing it. People, wake up and stop acting like a bunch of school kids. Don't be lead down the crooked path because he woos you! Stand up and stop this administration from leading us down a road we can't turn back from.

People are upset with Obama because they are not getting their way...i.e. gay rights. Speaking of gay right, people you must understand it was not Obama's decision to 'equate incest with gay marrige'. The Justice Department did, and if that is to be reversed it will take a long time before you see change. Know the facts before you jump to conclusions.

Everyday people jump on the President saying his decisions are affecting the 'American way' or 'Runing our country' or 'The President is a Liar'...do you even understand what he is going through right now? Its been 5 months since he has been in office, he cannot reverese the damages made in America in a day people. You need to be patient and see what he will do. Its bad enough he has the GOPs running after him day and night, talking behind his back and slowing down everything he is trying to do. Imagine yourself, if you work, and you are a boss that always has employees on your shoulder trying to see what you are doing, how you are doing it, and telling you that as a boss you have failed and will continue to fail with what you are trying to achieve...when all you want to do is maintain a stable enviroment for everyone. How would you feel?

I think the people that critisize others never look at themselves or put themselves in that perons shoes to fully understand the given situation. So stop complaining and do something if you really want change...just like Obama requested. You get up and do something about it, help our America! Don't just sit back and blame/rely on one man...

By the way @ TCMs comments, there is and never will be equality as long as this world keeps heading the direction it is. We have wars, hate, suffering, tortures...the fighting will not stop until the end of days. Critisize all you want, you won't get anywhere. So whats the solution? How about praying for the people you love the most?

Libs are all about hate and the master of hate, Barak Obama is perfect to rile them up in their quest to destroy this nation and punish people who have morals, values, decency, respect, integrity and fully support their own families while giving much of what they have to support evil taker libs.

It is good Vs evil and their is no doubt that when all the cards are put on the table, Democrats today are the worst this nation has ever seen, just refer to their supportive comments for an old pervert making sexual remarks about a 14 year old girl, and their attacks of the girl and her family.

Jealousy is the root of hatred. The Republicans are so jealous of Obama that they would rather commit political suicide than give the man some credits for the inredible job he's done to stabilize the economy they helped George Bush wreck.

You need to quell that anger. It’s not healthy. Make a list of what/who makes you happy in your life. You may find that list to be quite long! Once you have written your list, I suggest laying off the fatty foods and the alcohol over-consumption; and instead adopting an organic diet with plenty of greens combined with a rigorous yoga routine.

He has policies, Lori, but no real plans or details on how to implement them. That's his problem. Anyone can say free Health Care to all to get an applause. Have you read an actual analysis about this report though? $1.6 trillion to pay for a net gain of 16 million insured people, while some lose their insurance and 20 million people still do not receive anything? Is that worth $1.6 trillion to you? And Obama's response: Just get it done, Congress...

    What a joke.

Yes president Obama needs to stop being blamed for everything that
bush did while he was in office. He is even being blamed for a recession that we have been in since Lord knows how long, maybe the last 4 years. Bush came in with no debt and left with trillions of dollars of debt and you guys have somehow found a way to blame Pres. Obama for that.

Its just Plain Old bigotry and I for one am just sick of it.
