Obama wants health care package for Father's Day

President Obama says he wants ‘a health care bill’ for Father’s Day.
President Obama says he wants ‘a health care bill’ for Father’s Day.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – It's unlikely President Obama will get his Father's Day present wish by Sunday – but that didn't stop him from asking.

The president hosted his yearly Fatherhood event Friday at the White House followed by a backyard barbecue on the South Lawn of the White House.

During the barbecue portion of Friday's events, Obama was asked what he wanted for Father's Day. His response? "A health care bill."

President Obama then greeted a group of high school students, donned a white chef's apron with the presidential seal and assisted celebrity Chef Bobby Flay in grilling the food that would be served.

At Friday's events, President Obama discussed the impact of running for office on his family and said that he may not have run had his two daughters not been so young.

"It was still a very difficult decision, frankly I don't think we would have made the same decision if our kids were a little older," he said. He said that he and his wife, first lady Michelle Obama, decided that because their children were still young they could still thrive during their father's absence.

High school student Larry Holmes asked President Obama what he enjoyed more: "Traveling from state to state, country to country, being the president, which one is funner: being a father or being a president?"

"Nothing is more fun than being father, now my kids aren't teenagers yet, so I don't know whether that will maintain itself," Obama told the young man.

"...Probably the most fun that I have had since I have been president was actually at a parent/teacher conference where the teachers were bragging on my children. I just sat there and I just basked in the glory."

Also in attendance were several athletes and celebrities including NBA stars Dwayne Wade and Etan Thomas, former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cower, professional skate boarder Tony Hawk, and Darryl McDaniels, the "DMC" of Run DMC.

President Obama has held events around Father's Day since his days as an Illinois state senator - delivering a message on fathers last year that drew criticism from Jesse Jackson.

Wow...It's amazing how lame the liberal media's reporting on Obama is. Give me a break! As to Barry's Fathers Day request for Socialized Medicine, the American People are finally waking up to his big government-big spending policies. My guess his falling popularity will continue to plummet as the Country realizes the financial mess he has created for our future.

I'm concerned that the Republican fear tactics are working and that true health care reform will be sidelined once again. If that happens, selfishness and greed wins and the American people lose – again.

I say down with the GOP! Nobody questioned the huge pile of money spent on the Iraq war under the Bush administration. Now, the corrupt GOP, in bed with the health insurance companies, wants to complain about the price of health reform. I say VOTE OUT THE GOP!

  6. Obama Worry about North Korea

Dear Mr President, Please forget about Father's Day; forget about calling the LA Lakers or the Penguins; forget about health care reform; forget about the UAW/ North Korea has announced its intentions to fire a missle on a course to Hawaii on the 4th of July. The missle may fall short, but that is not the point. Somebody aims a missle at the US and fires it and we need to ACT. Mr President, you need to confront North Korea on a preemptive basis. You need to tell them now that any missle that comes within 2000 miles of Hawaii (not 500) will be shot down. And you need to sternly warn No Korea not to provoke us. Next. you need to meet with Japan and ask them to start building up their military. That's right, ask then to change their Constitution and build up their military. This will accomplish two things: (1) it will scare the hell out of China and motivate them to put pressure on North Korea; (2) it will scare the hell out of North Korea. Lastly, you need to tell North Korea that any missle fired at any territory of the US (if it comes withn 2000 miles) will be deemed an attack on

C.mon Obama get with the program. You cannot fight Korean missles with campaign rhetoric, and North Korea and the world knows it

How dare he make light over something serious like Father's Day?

Shame on him. Health care and Father's Day are serious issues.

    I hear he's a Muslim too.

    ...gratuitous Fox News parody.

What an honest representation of facts. I simply do not understand why for the sake of politics so many are bent on not allowing this President to do what he knows how to do.

His remarks and humility are just like that of Bush. However, Obama inherited a mess which he is sorting through and yet all I hear from the other side is criticism with no alternative actions proposed.

And NO, I am NOT a democrat and never have been one. I am an Independent voter who loves her country and hopes for the best for the President WE elected to office.

Happy Fathers day Mr. President. More success to you in all you do!

All he wants is a bill and he doesn't care what it says. We don't need more legislation. We need less. Government involvement in an industry means more costs for the tax payer. Take a look at education and health care. Both heavily subsidized and legislated by the federal government. We are allowing our country to slip into tyranny. Electronic health records are you kidding me!?! What if those got into the wrong hands. What if one day the government up and decided no health coverage for its political enemies? This is absurd. The free market can offer a solution if it is allowed to work but it is not. The government regulates and then when those regulations don't work they regulate more. That is the definition of insanity.

Is that really something his children can give him or is he everyone in America's father. I think that comment would make his children feel that they couldn't give him a gift that matters. If we, as Americans, have to be on this health care plan if it passes, why shouldn't the President and all of Congress be put on it. As a person, they are not any better or maybe as good as the rest of the people in America.

Obama and dems egregious behavior is like a tree fell in a forest and only a few taxpayers were around to hear it. They have attacked the healthcare system relentlessly, theyve attacked the energy industry, automakers, banks, private businesses. They want more control its never enough. They want more money, more regulations. They need to invest, they need to raise taxes, they need to repress and they need to compel because the Statist dems cannot make the imperfect perfect, even though Obama says he can.

How about Rep. Conyer's HR676 single-payer package? Makes a lot more sense than the White House's repackaged neoliberal Hillary-care garbage!

Will Obama be the first one to sign up for his healthcare plan? Will he sign his wife and kids up for it? If his plan is so brilliant, so stellar and amazing why is it he will not let his family be protected by his plan?

Even Obama is smart enough not to put the health of his family in the hands of his own government.

    Why should you?

NO more heavy expenditure that WE the poor taxpayer can't pay. Get the illegals off and out of the health system and it would be in a much better position!!!!!!!!!!!! Set dollar limits on law suits – set dollar limits on procedures ie MRI, heart surgery, etc. Let government motors sink or swim and take that money to help people who truly can't afford health care. Take all the pork OUT of government spending (smurfie murphie private airport) use that to help those who truly can't afford health care. It is a sad state of affairs when you call a social security office and have the option of English or spanish. If you can't speak English, you don't have any business calling a social security office!

  24. No Hillary = No Obama

Camerfly Obama thinks magically. He thinks his wishes will become reality. He thinks all he has to do his close his eyes and click his heels 3 times. He "uses" Father's Day, playing on the emotion of the holiday to get what he wants. It's been said before and it will be said again, he's an opportunist.

Why rush it? Look at the scope and the potential cost of this plan. We rushed the bailout package through congress, only to spend 600 million– less than 1% of it.

There's nothing wrong with being deliberate, but for all things good, let's make sure this is done carefully and critically.
