A new MoveOn.org ad campaign is targeting North Carolina Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan.

(CNN) - North Carolina Sen. Kay Hagan told reporters Friday a public health insurance option remains "on the table," as MoveOn.org announced an ad campaign targeting her over her reported lack of support for a public plan.

"Given recent comments showing that Senator Hagan is not supporting the public health insurance option, MoveOn.org will be making clear that our 115,000 members in North Carolina - many of whom volunteered for or donated to her campaign last year - believe the public option is the heart of true health care reform," the group said in a statement. "We'll run ads in North Carolina and D.C. asking that she advocate for the public option and support the President in truly solving the nation's health care crisis."

Earlier this week, Hagan told the Greensboro News & Record that a government plan could pose a major threat to private insurance companies.

The Democratic senator, who serves on the Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committee, has said she supports a "backstop option" for uninsured Americans that did not necessarily involve a government-run program - and her lack of support could prove a major obstacle for proponents of the idea, as Congress continues to weigh a plan to overhaul the nation's health care system.

On Friday, as MoveOn was announcing its campaign, Hagan told North Carolina reporters to "stay tuned" to the health care debate.

"We haven't taken a 'public option' off the table," she said, according to the Raleigh News & Observer - and those unhappy with her position "need to stay tuned."

"People are so centered on the word 'public,'" she said, according to the paper. "And it really depends on what's (involved) in that."

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California is also facing a targeted ad campaign from MoveOn over remarks that President Obama's health care agenda might not have enough congressional support to pass this year, and her skepticism over enacting a public option.

Democrat no mas, you hit it on the head! Just what Americans need to do work harder and make less to pay for the people that do not. Does any American citizen want to have their tax dollars spent on providing a new program for 8,000,000 illegal immigrants and their families? I keep wondering why Obama will not bring in tort law reform as part of the Bill? Just think, who are the trial lawyers going to litigate against if it is all provided for by the government?

a health economist   June 26th, 2009 7:48 pm ET

@ J.P. who said "The government has done such a good job with Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Amtrak, the postal system, Hurricane Katrina response, and the local DMV… gee, I just can't fathom why ANYONE wouldn't want to hand over their healthcare to the government."

The fact that medicare and medicaid are going bankrupt has more to do with the fact that the ratio of people paying into it versus those receiving money has been steadily decreasing for years than it has to do with the government managing it. It would be more appropriate to blame the Baby Boomers on that.

roscoe   June 26th, 2009 7:47 pm ET

Sherrol in Canada

You don't have a clue. I am from Canada and am now an American citizen. I left Canada twenty years ago. A disaster in the making. Do you realize that there are more people living in California than live in all of Canada.

candideinnc   June 26th, 2009 7:38 pm ET

Hagan owes it to her constituents to support a reform plan that will fix the execrable insurance industry in this country. I live in North Carolina, and because I have a pre-existing condition, I am a captive to Blue Cross, which has a monopoly on health insurance here. All of you that whine and cry about socialism have never been the victim of Robber Baron monopolies in the health care industry. You had better pray you never get sick and have to deal with their unfettered ability to raise your premiums and decrease your benefits year after year! We MUST have a viable public option now.

annie s   June 26th, 2009 7:28 pm ET

We MUST have a public option in order for there to be any real reform. I have already let my elected officials know that if they do not vote for one, they will never have my vote again. And I will work to help replace those legislators that vote against a public health option,. I don't want anyone representing me who would rather give in to the insurance lobbyists than to do what is right for the American people.

No Obama = No Hillary   June 26th, 2009 7:07 pm ET

All those 72% of Americans who favour a public option healthcare are communists and should be deported to either Russia or Cuba.

No Obama = No Hillary   June 26th, 2009 7:06 pm ET

Senators are our betters. They deserve nothing but the best. Us people, we don't need health insurance. We're just props for them. Understand. Public healthcare shouldn't be an option 'cos where will they get their campaign contributions. Things are just great as it is. Let's not change anything.

North Carolinian   June 26th, 2009 7:04 pm ET

I am sorry i really dont give a fig on what this woman says. I am from north carolina and I heard her speak multiple times. She is ridiculous and shes the 1 person i didnt want for my senator. I am a democrat and coundnt even vote for her becuase she is just horrible.

Clark   June 26th, 2009 7:01 pm ET

1. the public option will offer everybody some healthcare .... just not enough and certainly not in an efficient and timely manner .... and only the healthcare that the civil servant employee in the new federal beaurocracy decides the patient can have ... and not what the patient's physician or the patient feel is best.

2. the public option will incrementally undermine all other insurance companies until it is the only option left ... which means eventually it won't be an option .... it will be the only source of healthcare you and I can get.

3. even Europe is moving away from the far left socialist policies ... and is wondering why the U.S. is so blind .....

Jane   June 26th, 2009 6:49 pm ET

Be careful the "machine" is taking over. If you don't support the "machine" you will pay the wrath. Now I know how the Soviets feel when big brother is watching and controlling all. It's a scary feeling to know that alot of people are being brainwashed by a cult leadership taking over America. Just wait till you get the tax bills for all of this and are keeping about 40% of every dollar you make after all the taxes. Then you will wonder what mack truck hit you.

Tate   June 26th, 2009 6:44 pm ET

Why dont all you losers move to canada and get free health care. We want have to support you and I cant short menthals on the market.

Moe NY   June 26th, 2009 6:37 pm ET

Moveon.org is right on this one! Health care for ALL AMERICANS...it is the right thing to do!

AndrewCPA   June 26th, 2009 6:35 pm ET

@Denna – Congress and rest of the Feds (Civs) do not have government health care. They have regular insurance that most others have... blue cross blue shield etc...

The only thing is they pay 1/3 of the cost and what they have covered is by far better then what the rest of us have.

I do not think we should be adding to our debt. As the CBO has pointed out no one is reporting on it is that if Congress does not address spending, the debt will grow to 600% of GDP by 2050.

Since our President has promised change, he should work to force a balanced budget like most states have and cut all the "pork" and pay that debt down.

We need to hold the 535 memebers of Congress accountable for this and the Pres.

Now post this CNN since you never post any of my comments.

Have a great weekend all.

Wil in Chicago asked "72% of the American Public Support a Public Option…what are the 28% of you scared of?"
___________________________

Well, speaking for one of the people in the 28%, the thing that worries me the most is that there have been NO details whatsoever of what this "public option" looks like. Well, that, and the fact that 72% of the population "wants" it, but has no idea what "it" is.

If ANYONE thinks it's going to look remotely like what congress gets, you're sadly mistaken and terribly misled.

Lori, Houston Texas   June 26th, 2009 6:34 pm ET

When Kay Hagen is willing to give up her taxpayer funded health insurance to find and buy her own, I'll consider her side of this argument.

In the meantime, I'd like her to explain why it's OK for a insurance company cubicle dweller to come between me and my doctor, but not a "government bureaucrat". I mean, what's the effin' difference? Refusal to cover doctor prescribed care is already a huge part of the problem with the Profits Before People thugs we're dealing with now.

Health care should NOT be a profitable business like retail sales.

annie against biased news   June 26th, 2009 6:23 pm ET

Employer-sponsored health insurance premiums have doubled in the last 9 years, a rate 3 times faster than cumulative wage increases.

And yet we hear the same old tired dog story from the Repubs.
"We cant have public healthcare! That would be CRAZY! That would be Socialism!" "Socialism is scary commie stuff!"

Pull your head out of the sand. Just because the fat cat Repub politicians want to keep big Medicine status quo so rich people can get richer does not mean you need to lock-step in line with them.

They do not care one lick about you. Havent you figured that out by now?

andy   June 26th, 2009 6:02 pm ET

why would it would hurt private insurance companies? because it's better and more people would choose it? um, isn't that a good thing?

So if public health care is okay for our senators and congressmen, why isn't it good enough for us?

David in West Virginia   June 26th, 2009 5:51 pm ET

If Senator Hagen was elected with the belief that she would support her constituents desires for health care and she fails to back the efforts, then she should be outed and let the voters have their say as to whether they want her to continue her office or not!

D. Tree   June 26th, 2009 5:49 pm ET

Its time for REAL health care reform, not more dabbling.

The vast majority of Americans support a public option – the question is will the politicians do their jobs and represent us?

Marcos   June 26th, 2009 5:49 pm ET

Bush got the government out of the way on banking, law enforcement, health care, and even tried with Blackwater to get it out of Military operations.

Yet somehow government spending went up in those areas. This suppossed "Free Market" was rigged from the beggining. If the "Free Market" is so great, how come all of these companies and more are needing billions from the government to stay afloat?

ANd to all of you right-wing cretins who are parroting the Republican talking points about 'Government run health-care', why don't you think for yourselves for a change and ask yourselves if the privately owned insurance companies have ever looked out for the interests of the people they are meant to be serving rather than their own profits!

You obviously have a computer. Please Google the percentage of 72% of Americans wanting a public option to compete with private insurers for better care, including 50% of Republicans.

Fla.   June 26th, 2009 5:27 pm ET

I may not always agree with MoveOn, but they are correct here, considering most Americans (72%) want a public option as part of healthcare reform.

Finally, at least one Senator with sense enough to find their way to work and back home. I only hope that there's enough more that can see this for the boondoggle that it really is, and vote against it. Cost will go through the roof and the deficits will finish bankrupting the nation.

Don't be a whiner! If you think CNN is such a lousy new source, why do you log on? Fixed News has a website, too.

Austin   June 26th, 2009 5:01 pm ET

I'm glad they're not only targeting Republicans. Moderate Democrats need to get the message, too. The public option is something that needs to AT LEAST by discussed as a serious option rather than brushing it under the matt because it's politically dangerous. I'm especially happy about this after her lame justification for allowing concealed weapons in national parks. I'm starting to think Hagan is a Democrat in name only.

PeteSLA   June 26th, 2009 5:01 pm ET

Darn tootin'! I won't be happy until my health care is as good as our public schools, public housing or the DMV. Only the government can provide a certain level of service. It's gonna be great!

Shonie   June 26th, 2009 4:58 pm ET

Where is this 72% number coming from? Theres an important fact in statistics that is ignored by most pollsters. It is extremely important to have an even polling demographic. When 72% of those polled support obama, this does not actually represent a clear picture..Obama did not win 72% of the vote...last I checked it was 53%....hmmmm...

Brian in AZ   June 26th, 2009 4:52 pm ET

"Public option" is a misnomer. It's like entering a demolition derby with an M1 Abrams tank: it's not an "option" to win against the tank.

government run insurance is not an option because (1) all Americans end up paying for it through higher taxes (they get NO option concerning this...taxes are, by the way, LAW) and (2) because lawmakers, pushed onward with a desire to win future elections will continue to pump money into this think until it outperforms the private insurance providers who are unable to run up trillionsof dollars in debt or force payment on 300 million citizens like the fed can. Liberty ends when people learn they can vote themselves funds from the rest of the population.

72% agree with a public option because 72% of the people polled were not aware it's a fallacy.

Beth   June 26th, 2009 4:51 pm ET

Bill Sampson   June 26th, 2009 4:39 pm ET

A public option is essential to ensure every American access to quality and affordable health care. Politicians who oppose the will of over 70% of the American people should suffer the consequences. There is no legitimate reason for opposition, unless they are really on the side of health insurance companies that don't want the competition.

Health insurance companies are a scourge on society. They, of course, no more deliver health care than your auto insurer builds cars. They create enormous bureaucracies whose only purpose is to figure out how do deny coverage or to deny claim payments. Then they spend billions on marketing, on political bribery (excuse me, I mean campaign contributions) and huge bonuses paid to executives who are compensated for successfully figuring out how to charge the highest premiums possible and then deny coverage to anyone who may get sick and deny claims of those whom they do insure. Again, they have nothing to do with the actual delivery of any kind of health care. Their existence takes billions of dollars of health care money away from actual health care delivery. They represent nothing more than a tragic waste of resources and this country can no longer afford them.

Jack in Des Moines   June 26th, 2009 4:38 pm ET

Our senator needs to be reminded that she is the employee of the people. When she stated we have not taken the public option of the table my question is 'who is the we', the insurance companies?

Denna   June 26th, 2009 4:25 pm ET

What's up with these politicians not wanting to try the public option in some way or form? Are they all in the tank to the private insurance companies? For people who insist that they don't want anyone rationing their health care, your health care is already rationed by the insurance companies. They are not in business to help you; they are in business to make a profit. They hire people whose only job is to find ways to deny claims. I have seen these people on television after they grown a conscience. I can not see how government insurance would be worse. After all, Senator Hagan and the rest of our elected officials seem to be doing okay with taxpayer paid health care. If it was that bad they would buy their own.

Chris D.   June 26th, 2009 4:22 pm ET

That's right check these Senators......America wants a public option as a choice!!

Craig in NC   June 26th, 2009 4:16 pm ET

I didn't vote for her but I agree with her on this one. The public option will be cheaper because all they have to do is print money and move some TARP funds around to pay the bill. Of course, that might work for 7 to 10 years before it collapses but by then there won't be a good market for private health insurance any more.

public option will kill health care as we know it.

It's been tried and tested in many wealthy nations and FAILED. Those same nations are trying to get the private sector involved again before the country goes bankrupt over it.

WHY

Follow the money ! Jon Kyl took 1.6 million from health care in 2008 and Insurance, Mitch McConnell took 1.7 in 2008 on and on.

If Senators don't want government health care for Americans they should give up their government health PAID by Americans

Why is it ok for Republicans to get the best health care but not the average American ?

Like the people who have commented on this story would have supported women, Kay Hagan or the public option for health care anyway - gimme a break! Just what we need - more Limbaugh lites!

Kay Hagan is simply being reminded by Move On and the concerned progressives who voted for her that 72% of Americans want a public option available for health care. The last thing that this country needs right now is senators without the spine to stand up to the monied special interests like the pharmaceutical industry, the big hospital conglomerates and the health insurance companies - all of whom are fighting to keep their profit machine churning out big bucks.

We the People would like to have the same Healthcare Coverage you are provided, and we are willing to pay the same cost per person that you pay. Also, We the People would like to see a list of all Healthcare Provider and Pharmaceutical Company donations to your campaigns or PAC's. Trust me, an affordable Healthcare Plan can be created and offered to folks who are without coverage. If Blue Cross / Blue Shield is a Non-Profit Company, why does the company need to advertise and donate money to the members of the House and Senate?

Sherrol in Canada   June 26th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

Good for MoveOn.........this is how you get to politicians, hit then where it hurts, in their pockets/pocket books.

We in Ontario, Canada have, universal healthcare and are glad for and relish it. Yes, we are taxed heavily on certain things, you know, sin taxes – cigarettes & alcohol. Oh, by the way, our provincal (state) government controls our liquor and gaming industries also. Liquor can only be bought at liquor stores which have the moniker Liquor Control Board of Ontario, or as we lovingly call them, LCBO, or beer at The Beer Store (literally that's what they're called).

Don't be alarmed or scoff at this. It's the norm here and these taxes and other monies are one way our Gov pays for our universal healthcare plus other Gov services.

For some form of government option for healthcare to be implemented in the US, the people will have to contribute in some way and that's probably taxes – sin taxes – why not? Bankruptcy or pay more for booze or smokes? In my opinion, no contest.

Don't know if you have any State run casinos, but that might be taken into consideration as well. Think of the revenue that can be earned and used to supplement healthcare and other gov. services.

I disagree with MoveOn.org on this tactic. I would like to see all options from both parties debated and, hopefully, the best possible solution to the health care nightmare resolved. I do not favor those who only want one form or another without an open and honest examination. Health Care in this country is a travisty and we need a national policy much as we need a national policy for energy.

The healthcare plan is an abortion. Pun intended.

One more time, folks, the real reason behind a public option, ie. government health insurance, is not really about free heathcare for the masses or even improved healthcare for those that now have insurance. We have two programs that are in place now that are funded by taxes, but are broke. They are Social Ssecurity and Medicare. The taxes that have been collected are spent. We now need a new program, with more taxes, to pay for those programs. Any Ponzi scheme needs new money from somewhere. This Ponzi will take taxes collected for a new healthcare program, which are collected from young, healthy customers, to pay for today's SS and Medicare. The fiscal wreck and decline in decent medical care coming down the road are not our current politician's worry. They need to figure out how to pay medicare and social security (which has already been spent )to the baby boomers.

Good for Hagan to do what is right. And hopefully she won't succumb to blackmail. There are a lot more of her constituents that do not want to be forced down a path of having our health care problem worsen with government involvement.

We may need to fix it but this solution is not the right solution.

Why? Hoax calls, that is why you don't mention names..

They would not have believed it.

judesuper   June 26th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

Dems, you need to get on board the public option. You can be voted out just as easily as the repubs were.

Pete East   June 26th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

MoveOn org has spoken.

And remember this: if your not part of the solution, you’re the problem.

Matt   June 26th, 2009 3:12 pm ET

Do not let a foreigner control and direct American Politics. Ban George Soros and MoveOn.org. They do not speak for us the speak to us.
